[RBW] Re: Good New/Bad News on my repaired Atlantis

2018-01-10 Thread Philip Williamson
Just thinking of the squat Testors bottles makes me happy. Drug stores used
to carry a wide array of colors in the 70s, and I'd look at all the colors
before buying a Charleston Chew for my walk home from school. Back when
kids walked home from school. I may get an Atlantis color bottle as a
talisman, even though I don't have the bike. The 2004 Quickbeam green is an
exact match for Plasti-kote "shamrock green" though.

John, I’ll be most interested in hearing how the Paul Touring Cantis work for
you. I myself have thought of getting the Paul Neo Retros, Touring, or Linear
Pull Motolites in the past. I would definitely consider them on a new build.
Please post your observations when you set them.

2018-01-08 Thread John G.
Jock: good info! Thanks for sharing! This needs to enter Official Atlantis
Lore.

John: I've put two separate brake pads on my CX-70s, the stock ones and
Kool-Stops. Both squealed a ton. I even had them adjusted at a shop once or
twice, and that never seemed to work. I've had a decent number of cantis
over the years: Dia-Comp 960s, cheapy Tektros, IRD Cafams. The CX-70s are
far and away the squealiest I've ever owned. Plus, as Patrick sagely
states, you need at the very least 6 hands to adjust them. Double plus, I
have to deflate my Compass 44mms every time I take the wheel off. Now, I
must also admit that I could probably win a Nationwide competition on Worst
Canti Adjuster.

I may see if I can use them to convert my Voyageur to 700c from 27 inches,
but if that doesn't work, I'll send them off to anyone who wants 'em for
say 25 bucks.

Lum, the Moon Unit can be adjusted with two hands easily (vs. the six hands
required with the rest). The vertical cable goes into a dimple at the bolt, the
body is treaded for the bolt, so no separate nut, and the bolt is allen, and no
second micro bolt that leaves you scratching your head wondering what you’re
supposed to do with it.

Congrats, John! When I talked with Mark Nobilette he mentioned that checking
the alignment may cause paint to flake off, both because of where he had to
clamp it and if he needed to shift anything, preparing me for the likely need
of a full repaint. A few thoughts:

— I shifted to Paul canti’s and love them. Well worth it. Don’t forget the moon

Paul designed the simple, humble hanger the way I groused it should be as I

For the meantime, if that means not much time, you can put on some wax. Or
clear nail polish, but you'll want to steel wool that down a bit before
final touch up if it's glossy. Even if you match the color, the other issue
is depth--put some primer and or a few coats of the touch up so that it
comes out level. The other issue with factory touch up, as opposed to
mixing your own or getting the auto paint custom mixed is that uv rays will
likely have changed the color enough to notice the newer paint in contrast.
I don't usually touch up my bikes, but have done lots of other metal and
wood touch up. And I am about to embark on bike touch up myself. Good luck!
