2018-10-19 Thread RichS
Received a compliment yesterday on my just rebuilt sage green SamH. Stopped
at a local bakery and a customer walking out kept staring at the bike (not
at me) and finally said "what a beautiful bike". She continued to stare and
shook her head in disbelief. She then said it looked custom. I thanked her
and told it was a labor of love. Sure made my day.

May you all get compliments on your Rivs this weekend!

I don't own a Riv but my wife and I had ventured over to a local Cajun
restaurant for lunch and seeing there was a bike shop next door, I had to
stroll over after eating. It was a slow day so the owner and I started
chatting and somehow Rivendell came up and he said "One of my customers has

2018-10-18 Thread Linda G
I just got my first compliment on my Roadini after less than 10 rides on
it. I saw a young man looking my way from an adjoining bike path. He rode
over and caught up with me to say "Nice bike". I've had the same type of
experience while riding my other two steel bikes. In one case I was riding
down a curved ramp from a bike bridge and a college-aged guy and girl were
sitting on a low wall at the bottom. He was staring intently at me as I
came down and I wasn't sure why. As I passed he had a wide-eyed look and
said "I really like your bike". That was my 650b low trail bike. In all
cases the complimenters have been men 30 to 40-some years younger than I
am. It's great to see them appreciate nice steel bikes (and maybe someone
old enough to be their grandmother out riding).

2018-10-18 Thread Rod Holland
On a ride with my new-to-me orange Ram, I encountered two episodes of this,
on a 20-mile ride on Minuteman Commuter Bikeway:

May I photograph your bicycle? (this really happened...)

Interestingly, they photographer wasn't keying off "Riv" per se, but
thought it was a beautiful steel bike (and who could argue with that?)...

The second episode was on the return leg of the same ride, when a gentleman
overtook me and matched speed for about 1/4 mile, asking me about the bike
in great detail, and praising it to the stars. It's a little like walking a
really cute dog... I guess good design will do that for you.

Also, being one who lives in a very car-centric part of the U.S., bicycle
compliments here are rare as "hen's teeth". Instagram has been, for me, a
nice source of encouragement in, not only my Rivs, but other bikes I own
and, upon which, I have put my personal touches.

2018-10-03 Thread Garth

Around here in this little corner of O-Hi-O there are few cyclists. I once
saw another cyclist about a month I go, thought I do see banana peels on
the side of the road more often, maybe once every 2-3 weeks. I guess
tossing the peel into the grass must just be too laborious for the poor
soul hah ! The "bike store" in town is Wally World(that's Wal-Mart
for the unimaginable). Always stocked with fresh bikes ready to roll off
the shiny "showroom floor" kinda literally !

I did meet one cyclists a few years back, a lawyerly fella who knew what
a Rivendell Bombadill sorta was at least, but apparently it was unworthy
compared to the plas-tique space ship he was riding Va va varm
and away he went into the statosphere faster than light . onto the
wings of angels I suppose ..or so the promise goes . ahahahahahaa !

Someone did compliment the ol' warhorse once though "Hey ... you
ride that old thing everywhere " . Yes I do ... I certainly do !

It's car-centric here, and it's rare I get a compliment that isn't "nice beach

Many years ago, I did a MS ride on Martha’s Vinyard on my then new All’rounder.

The entire field of riders were on mid to upper level aluminum or carbon Treks,
Specializeds, etc. (This was ‘04 or so right in the middle of the Lance
hysteria years.) As we were pulling in to one of the rest areas I overhear one
of the event mechanics say to another “Oh, a Rivendell. At least someone’s
bringing a little class.”

That put a smile on my face for the rest of the ride.

says his "Howdies" and I say "Talk to me". First thing he does is haul his
bike into camp, walk over to mine and says "Damn, that's a beautiful bike."
"Rivendell," I respond. "I think I've heard of those."

I guess you could call that a semi-chuff.

Ummm... I'd be careful about handing out "chuffs"! ;-)

I ride in Berkeley and all of the East Bay... it's not uncommon to get chuffed
several times each day. And as well, to hand out chuffs to fellow Riv riders I
see. We are part of a not-so-secret not-so-subterranean society, that
recognizes and embraces, through use, ownership, and promotion, the reverence
of good things that work simply, and that simply work.

he cycled past this morning. I felt pretty chuffed, in a private sort of way,
that a stranger recognized the bike and called it out. Did I need the
"validation?" Well, maybe. Whatever. I must say that it was nice to hear. When
was your first such experience?

"Chuffed?" I must have slipped even more generations behind on slang than
I thought.

2018-10-01 Thread Bob B
My favorite time was when I was riding my Hunq home from work in Brooklyn
and a guy pulled up next to me at a stop light riding a custom Johnny
Coast, the first Coast I had seen in the wild!

My favorite time I saw another Riv while I wasn't riding one was when I was
driving out of Zion National Park enjoying the spectacular scenery, when
all of the sudden there's a guy riding down the road with a Sam Hillborne
touring rig. I could tell what it was instantly as soon as I saw the seat
stays from the rear. Had to yell "NICE BIKE MAN!!"

sightings are rare here in baltimore, too--my first recognition was a bit
less formal, but definitely smile-inducing: i, atop my 67cm homer,
approached a cross-country-ready atlantis and gave two friendly rings of my
brass bell. he struck his dinger, and we two strangers made melodious bell
music.

2018-10-01 Thread Pondero
It is encouraging to hear a call like that. There is a difference between
folks who see the bike as simply "nice", and those who seem to understand,
appreciate, and value the same things we do. I think it is more than
validation. I think it is "connection".

Hey, nice Riv, LeRoy!
