Has any one ever rode the Amish Country Century? It's in Delaware, so I
would think that it would be relatively flat to rolling. Is that true? I
might be interested in riding it if it is on my QB.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Is it crazy to do a century with Boscos?

2016-04-10 Thread Mike in WA
I found that my Quickbeam had insufficient reach and had to convert to a
threadless stem. The bars also wouldn't go high enough, so I used this Soma
threaded
to threadless adapter

to get what I wanted. If you got that and whichever of the 100's of
threadless stems available you'd be rocking on the Jones bars. I love the
Jones bars for the position variability. The aero tuck/rest position is so
supportive (can get my elbows on the 710's) and the climbing and standard
positions are great as well.

2016-04-05 Thread masmojo
I don't think it's so much that you can't, maybe just that you might not want
to. I love my Boscos, but a bar that allows a more aero position might be
easier/faster over that distance. It might not seem like a lot, but if you've
been riding for 5 hours the prospect of shaving 10 or 15 minutes starts to seem
pretty appealing.

2015-06-10 Thread Ryan Christbaum
Alan, I'm a firm believer that if you can tackle 75% of your target ride
leading up to it, you'll be able to do the whole thing when it counts. A
good plan is probably to ensure your bike setup is adequate for you for at
least 75 mile rides of similar terrain, and then don't make any last-minute
changes before the event. Then you'll have one answer.
And be careful in the crowds. It's amazing what stupid things people do
while riding in events.

Hi guys -

I didn't want to let this post fade without letting y'all know how much I
enjoyed your responses - especially the cajoling, encouragement, and
stories 'bout smoking'. While I'm still inhaling, I''m also now riding the
bike to work - about a seven mile commute each way from Silver Spring into
DC - which is significantly diminishing my ciggy intake!

I am also thoroughly enthused by the cries of "ride on" regarding the
boscos, and enjoyed the references to chocolate milk, molten metal, and
plain common sense.

You guys are cool...

I used that adapter with Jones bars for my proto-Bombadil. Mostly a good
experience, but I found I had to tighten it very hard to prevent slippage.
Also, I found it ugly, and I'm not typically sensitive to aesthetic issues.
I was using a downhill mtb stem I had in my parts bin, so that was probably
part of the problem. I've switched to bullmoose on the Bomba and put the
Jones on a different bike. Both are excellent bars.

For a 100 km ride, Bosco the Handlebar for steering, and Bosco the Chocolate

help pass the time in a most pleasant way.

[RBW] Re: Is it crazy to do a century with Boscos?

2015-06-08 Thread Marc Irwin
Absolutely sane. I just did a metric century yesterday on my Hillborne
with Boso Bars. It's my go to bike for any charity ride or ride beyond 25
miles. The Bosco's provide a much greater range of body positions to fight
or take advantage of wind and terrain while preventing fatigue. I have
them on my Hunq also and have done over a hundred miles several days while
fully loaded. I've also never experienced any numbness in my hands with
them.

the intention was humorous rather than defensive, though not prevalent,
it's not uncommon today to see Italian and French riders smoking at rest

Actually, I had something very much like that happen to a set of drop
bars on my 3-speed commuter. I'd just arrived at work, and was
dismounting when the bars drooped. Turned out, the left hand side had
cracked through just by where the stem clamped it. One can only imagine
how that would have gone had it happened while I was just riding along
(JRA).

And last sunday, 7.5 miles into a 75 mile ride, I'd stopped at a red
light and was just starting up when CLINK and there I was standing over
the bike in the road. My left hand crank arm was lying in the road, the
bottom bracket spindle having broken off where the left crank arm
attached. Again, just think about how that would have gone had I been
JRA -- no need to imagine, because it happened on a different bike Dec
2013, about 2 miles after having left the rest stop. Spindle broke,
right hand crank arm flew off, bike veered off the road, I came off and
did a tumbling roll on the gravel and ended up in someone's front yard
face down a couple of inches from a big pile of dog poop.

Seriously though, there is only one way to find out. Some things that
work for for 70 miles feel wrong at 80 miles and you have to figure
out how to make it work. There ain't no way to know till you get to
the distance you will be going. Grin.

On the other hand, if it really doesn't work odds are you're going to
know it long before 70 or 80 miles. I've never managed to get farther
on flat or city bars than about 40 miles before my hands are totally numb.

[RBW] Re: Is it crazy to do a century with Boscos?

2015-06-07 Thread Ron Mc
Alan, that quill stem has such short vertical extension, you might do
better with a quill/threadless adapter
https://www.benscycle.com/p-2573-nitto-mtc-04-long-quill-stem-to-threadless-adapter-286222mm.aspx?gclid=Cj0KEQjw18-rBRDogrTg4Lusuu0BEiQACs8YQsWtTNDc5_xPQ39OYUZGDUlMl9ZL3y-0j-zQ1--wXYUaAh1a8P8HAQ#nitto-mtc-04-long-quill-stem-to-threadless-adapter-286222mm

drew, may not be the bars specifically, but the way you have them adjusted.
My moustache bars are on a heavy bike and the farthest I've ridden it is
40 mi (with a 2500' climb), but I'm not limited by any kind of discomfort
showing up.
On my new upright bars, I've been making tweaks to address numbness that
shows up and with good success (numbness = pinched circulation)

[RBW] Re: Is it crazy to do a century with Boscos?

2015-06-07 Thread drew
i've never done an official century ride, but i have done about 90 miles in
a day a few times. i also have never used bosco bars, but i do use
albatross bars. for me and my limited experience, i have found that most
potential problems show themselves somewhere in the 35-50mile range.
mustache bars start hurting my back/wrists and cause dead hands at about
35miles, but i love them for those first 35. i can get much further, more
comfortably, on alba's, and even though i feel slightly less zippy, they
stay on the touring bike, because not hurting>hurting. i would think that
if you're going 50 miles in complete comfort, why mess with itbut
again, thats just me.
