2024-05-05 Thread Joe Bernard
Doug,

My understanding (which may be wrong, my memory for stuff I read a while
ago seems to have left me as I recently approached my 62nd birthday) is the
CHG will also be lugged and probably not cheap. It will be longer-stayed
than the Roadini. It's coming September! I know at least one friend of ours
who will be thrilled with this news.

2024-05-05 Thread Johnny Alien
I think the Gallop is going to be fully lugged correct? The geometry is
probably pretty close through the iterations but visually its very
different than how it started. Its been quite some time since they offered
a fully lugged road frame I standard production. I prefer the swoop and
canti posts BUT it looks really nice and I still appreciate the angled top
tube. They say its designed for sweptback but can handle drops. I think
they should just lean in hard one way or the other. I have mine set up with
sweptback because I feel like thats where it was supposed to go. But also
interesting is that means there is no road focused drop by bike in the
standard lineup. At least not designed to be so. I think that the Gallop
and Roadini could co-exist with the Roadini being more affordable and 100%
road focused with drops. I don't think thats what is happening though, I
think the Roadini is goin away for now.

[RBW] Re: Lugged Roadini and Charlie H Gallup

2024-05-05 Thread Mathias Steiner
>> frame schedule and the upcoming *Lugged *Roadini.

The Rivendell product schedule is like a fever dream.

So many variations on one theme -- or maybe two themes. Go-fast yet
comfortable, which are the most interesting bikes to me (Roadini, Gallop,
AHH, maybe Sam), plus the long step-through bikes, which I'd have to try
one to see what I'm missing. They started showing up, what, a decade ago,
and I lose track how many iterations have been built.

I'm not against step-through, it just doesn't solve any problems for me.
The recent 'string test' video showing how flexy Clem & Co get under load
was a real eye opener. I would have predicted a small fraction of the
movement shown. And in typical Riv fashion, they point out it's
"unscientific" testing -- looked pretty good to me -- and then show exactly
what they found. You have to respect that kind of integrity. I'm pushing
200 lbs. ready to ride and I don't want my bike to flex that much. Diamond
frames for me, and chain stays 46 cm and shorter.

Given the choice, I'll take lugged over TIG'd also, but I wouldn't spend
much time worrying about it. Aesthetics are good, but I ride to ride.
That's a lot of effort to make Roadini version 2. I'm really surprised by
that. It's not like welded frames are weaker.

Sometimes the Riv model carousel is reminiscent of the car industry in the
60s, with models updating every year. Judging by the purchasing habits of
this group, it's a sound strategy ;)

I continue to be intrigued and baffled by Rivendell. I'm a regular parts
customer and their products have made my riding more pleasant. But some of
their orthodoxy doesn't do it for me. Like riding without padded shorts, to
which I returned early this year, and which worked great for long, cool
rides... until I hit a muggy day and spent forty miles sandpapering the
backs of my legs with soggy cotton. Not fun, two weeks to heal, and
nobody's fault but mine. So much learning.

I'll stop this rant and go ride my bike.

cheers -mathias

I'm curious about the whole lugged Roadini thing now. The Susie I
understand because its a cost/time of manufacture thing but in the case of
the Roadini it basically is just upping the cost. Unless the feeling is
that a lugged model will just sell better regardless of a higher price.

[RBW] Re: Lugged Roadini and Charlie H Gallup

2024-05-05 Thread Valerie Yates
I just finished tweaking the set up on my 2022 Gallop demo - purple with
swoop tube, non-canti version. It rides like a dream. Super silky and
nimble. One mistake I had made was to install a heavy duty pannier rack on
it. It made the bike feel very noodley. I was tempted to sell it. I think
that's why this reviewer

complained about its flex. He shows it with the same rack I initially had
on it.

When I switched to a top rack, since it was only being used for my tail
light and lock, everything came together. Now, I love it for unloaded
riding on rough and hilly local roads. I have a huge smile whenever I am
riding it. So just chiming in with a note of caution in setting it up for
its intended purpose. It is not meant as a loaded touring bike and, even
without a load, a rack that is too stiff will impact its performance.
Can't wait to see the set-ups on the production models.

[RBW] Re: Lugged Roadini and Charlie H Gallup

2024-08-17 Thread Tom
I called Riv today to ask several questions, one of which was the status on
the lugged Roadini. It seems that originally the launch was scheduled for
this Fall. However, they’re applying the Roaduno delay to the lugged
Roadini, meaning it’s likely it wont be available until early 2025. Several
other bikes are ahead of it, including Appaloosa, Gallup.

[RBW] Re: Lugged Roadini and Charlie H Gallup

2024-08-17 Thread Jay
I would be interested in a lugged Roadini If I could easily strip my
complete build, sell the frames for like 85% of what I paid (in Feb) and
then rebuild with a few modifications from my original build. Mostly
though, I would select a 54cm over a 57cm. I'm running my C17 as far
forward on the rails as possible on a straight seat post. It's fine, and I
still love the bike, but I could have went down a size (I was between
sizes). My Roadini has good welds to my eye, more about the size and maybe
the new colour scheme (that mermaid Atlantis colour...hmm, that would be a
done deal if they offered that colour).

2024-05-05 Thread Jason Fuller
Good info Valerie! As the reviewer you are noting, yep, I can totally see
what you mean and I agree that what I was using it for wasn't quite right
for what it was as a bike. My Hillborne is actually the perfect bike for
what I was trying to do.

I'd bet the production version of the CHG will be less wiggly too, just
visually going by the diameter of the top tube. I am sure it's still got
nice springy flex, though. Seems like it's basically a longer wheelbase
Homer, which seems absolutely perfect for a certain someone who appears to
already know this bike is perfect for their club ride needs.

Re: [RBW] Re: Lugged Roadini and Charlie H Gallup

2024-05-05 Thread Paul M
I purchased a Sergio green Roadini from the last run of framesets. The tig
welding on this frame had some very poor welding beads. Definitely not what
I would expect on a $1300 frame. Maybe it was just this frame, but I feel
that it certainly could have been on the other Roadini's. That could
explain the move to a lugged Roadini frame. I sold it and bought a mustard
Homer (lugged :).

Totally agree with you, Paul. I know I'm being picky, but the welds on my
Roadini look pretty sloppy. Best believe it's going up for sale just so
long as (1) the Lugged Leo has the same snappy ride quality and (2) it
comes in blue. Not sure what compelled me to sell my Soma SanMarcos ten
years ago, but this would be a great replacement. Keeping my fingers
crossed.

Wouldn't it be great if it had the Red/White color scheme like the early
Roadeos?? /wishful thinking

maybe they're offering a lugged Roadini to reduce the demand for lugged

When I switched to a top rack, since it was only being used for my tail

I'd bet the production version of the CHG will be less wiggly too, just
visually going by the diameter of the top tube. I am sure it's still got
nice springy flex, though. Seems like it's basically a longer wheelbase
Homer, which seems absolutely perfect for a certain someone who appears to

Jason - - Hi! I am glad you agree. I was really surprised what an
improvment it was to remove that rack from it. I thought your review was
excellent overall. Very detailed and informative. I also agree re Hilborne.
That is better choice for carrying a load without impacting its
performance. I have not ridden a Homer.
