I did the editing and the book layout, so there's that.

I highly recommend the William Gibson novel "the Peripheral," which is also

One of my all-time favoites is "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"
by Robert Pirsig (read 4 times). Also recently really enjoyed "Super, Sad,
True Love Story" by Gary Shteyngart. A funny and horrifying vision of the
future. Seems extreme but, given the political and technological trends
going on... not as far fetched as you would hope. His writing was
outstanding. As much as I want to like Dave Eggers, "SSTLS" was way better
than "The Circle" (IMO).

Not short, not free (that I know of), but definitely Riv: "Remembrance of

can't get to the finish line in a hurry, it's endlessly lovely, and there's
no way to tackle it except in a leisurely, winding way.

A novel I read recently about race in US (and Africa) by an African
woman--great different POV:
Americanah
Novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
The Ibis Trilogy by Amitav Ghosh which I had been waiting for the third one
to be published and it came from the library the day I was leaving for a
two week vacation this summer--a perfect event. It takes place mainly in the
lead up to the Opium Wars between England (and it's proxy India) and China.
The first one which has an amazing sea journey which focuses on the
language of the sailors (lascars) which in itself is worth the time spent
reading it. The plot of characters and the historical fiction and
descriptions of India and Canton are icing on the cake. The first book is
called Sea of Poppies.
(I like to read about different cultures.)
As for me, right now I'm looking at a lot of photo books. Saul Leiter,
Richard Kalvar, Alex Webb.
So little time...

If you like Steampunk novels, I just read a couple that were a lot of fun:

The Invisible Library by Genevive Cogman
Free-Wrench by Joseph Lallo

The Invisible Library is about a woman who travels to alternate universes
to collect variations of the same book. Quite an interesting concept!
Free-wrench is kind of a post-apocalyptic world, and a woman who has
adventures on airships. Apparently some nuclear disaster has covered the
world in poisonous purple fog, and everybody lives on mountain tops where
the air is clear. The only way to get anywhere is by blimp.

Both books are available for Kindle.

I'm reading "Confederacy of Dunces" for the second time and really am enjoying
it quite a bit. It's not short, but it is fun.

Well, a brilliant and erudite classic combining mystery and romance is Gaudy
Night, by Dorothy Sayers. The only mystery I can think of where the crime is
not a murder (thought there are some attempts). Lord Peter Wimsey at his most
human, but the better character is the heroine, Harriet Vane.

Or a mystery in an entirely different style: The Big Sleep, by Raymond
Chandler. Hard-boiled, but often very funny.

I would re-read both of these books in a heartbeat.
I like the "Elvis Cole" novels by Robert Crais for a modernized LA crime
thriller. Not quite as light a touch as Chandler, but a similar chivalric
approach to the characters.

Three cheers for LPW! Although, personally, I prefer /Murder Must
Advertise /and /The Nine Tailors./

Or a mystery in an entirely different style: /The Big Sleep/, by
Raymond Chandler. Hard-boiled, but often very funny.

A little something to go with that...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKmq9BivBL4 (actually, not /The Big
Sleep/ but rather /Farewell My Lovely/)

And then, there's historical mystery. Today, both LPW and R. Austin
Freeman's Dr. Thorndyke qualify, because enough time has passed that the
time periods they (at the time, contemporaneously) portray have become
historical. And if Rome's your thing, there are several terrific
series. Lindsey Davis' Marcus Didius Falco novels (starting with
/Silver Pigs/) and now continuing with Flavia Albia; John Roberts
Maddox's SPQR series; and of course Steven Saylor's Gordianius the
Finder. (Several others, too, but those are the major league.) But no
matter what your historical period, chances are you'll find someone
writing historical mysteries about it.

And speaking about historical novels, I can't stop without mentioning
Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series. I saw him in person once, at
the Library of Congress. He'd come to give a reading. In the audience
were several honest to god captains of real life tall ships, at least
one of whom had come across the entire country to come see him.

C. S. Lewis's "space trilogy" is worth reading, serially or separately. The
last, *That Hideous Strength,* has elements of deep black humor in addition
to its other literary merits.

(Eg, N. I. C. E. -- National Institute for Controlled Experiments;
administration helped by the new-tech Pragmatometer.)

Or (because I'm Canadian) Margaret Atwood's trilogy...*Oryx and Crake*
(you'll never look at chicken fingers the same way), *After the Flood* and *Mad
Addam. *

Quite a chilling vision of the future because it's entirely plausible.

Also , as Steve P. noted, try the Patrick O Brien novels - exquisite
writing, great characters, and beautiful sailing ships. And a good
accompaniment is *A Sea of Words . * This is a very detailed glossary of
all the nautical terminology, plus footnotes regarding late 18-19th century
history, culture,...etc.

Riv content...my pet name for my Rivendell road is The Nutmeg of
Consolation ...something to do with the Harvest Gold frame and brown saddle
and all.
