I think with slicks you would get way less pebbles thrown up into fenders. From my experience. I only hear pebbles about one time per year with slicks and about 1.5 cm fender clearance all around -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I have 559s on my Sam with cream SKS 45 fenders and 38mm Little Big Bens. I put salmon pads on the 559s and they work sufficiently. Things are a bit close in front. I hear pebbles scraping inside the front fender occasionally. I have SKS 50 fenders on my Cheviot and never hear that noise. Re: [RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.
My guesses: 1. It was Grant who convinced Tektro to make the R559 calipers in the first place, so I think he feels motivated to stick to his guns about the value of these brakes and continue to spec them on his bikes. 2. Production costs. The fork crowns and seatstay bridges already have brake mounts, whereas adding cantilever mounts adds four more brazing operations (at least). Fairly critical ones at that, where a strong braze and good placement/alignment are essential to the function of the bike. All that being said, the latest batch of Sams had cantilever posts (and I was tempted by them!). They're going on pause until 2020, we'll see if they come back with posts or not then. Re: [RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.
I swapped my R559s for Paul Racers because the R559s intruded upon fender space. Centerpulls do not. I thought the Pauls had better lever feel, because they are stiffer than the R559s. Braking performance was only slightly better than R559s, though (both brakes on Kool-Stop pads). > On Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 5:35 PM UTC-4, Brett Callahan wrote: >> >> Friends, >> >> I'm considering the purchase of a lightly used Sam Hillborne--the caliper >> brake version. [RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.
I'll add to the conversation and say that I have too have a caliper Sam. I love this bike! Given the choice if I had to do it all over again I would prefer a canti version just because of the added tire clearance. Mine came with the R559's which are decent brakes but I ended up swapping them out with the Paul Racer's just like others have said. When adjusted properly the Paul's are fantastic brakes! If you add the Paul's the one recommendation I'll make is to get the Paul Moon Units. The Moon Unit is such a nicely designed brake accessory that makes your life easier when it comes to adjusting your brakes. You mentioned you wanted to use the bike with fenders. The Racer's easily clear the fenders where as the Tektro brakes make just enough contact to mess with your fender alignment. Loved my R559’s with salmon pads on my blue Sam. I ran 42’s with fenders on it. No problem. I see no reason to pay all that money for Pauls. I had Pauls on a Bleriot once and switched to the R559’s and was much happier. Cleaner look and braked better. No more judder. Easy setup. No fuss. Less hardware. Braked just as well. I have the Tektro/Silver (Riv branded and shinier version) 559s on 3 bikes and they work fine for me. I use either Kool-Stop or Aztec pads which grip better than the stock items. Max, I tried converting a 1985 Trek 400 to 650b using the Tektro 559 brakes. I filed down the slots on the front to get them to work (barely). In retrospect I should have tried the DiaCompe 750 long reach center pulls which have 78mm of reach. Those brakes get mixed reviews but they sure have the required reach! I have a Sam with the Tektro brakes and they are not great brakes but adequate and only after a pad change. They look good, nice sculpted lines and the finish of the brake is well done. Super easy to set up which is a bonus. The price is more than affordable so they have that going for them. I had the stock Tektros on my Sam. Found them lacking. I'd been using Cantis for years, and this was my first forray into sidepulls in years. I think the long arms resulted in too much flex. They were easy to adjust, however. Easily the easiest brakes I've used to set up and maintain. But in wet Oregon, not so great for me. I use Paul Racer on a different bike, and they are heads and shoulders better for stopping. I don't care for their looks, but they work great. Worth the money to me. I have bikes with each on them right now. The racers are superior in stopping power, the perceived hand fatigue on long descents, less flexy so there’s a perception of more direct power transfer... get some compressionless brake housing as well. With both I clear 650bx42 and with Paul’s have cleared 650bx1.95 vee rubber xcx as well. -J -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.
Brett, I forgot to mention I have a canti-Sam, & I am happy it's a Canti-sam. The racers are fun and cool looking, but the Paul neo retro (wide cantilevers) are what I prefer. They feel more solid and the power is better than the Racers IMO. best, Adam On Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 2:36:35 PM UTC-7, Brett Callahan wrote: > > Friends, > > I'm considering the purchase of a lightly used Sam Hillborne--the caliper > brake version. [RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.
I'm afraid I'm not much help with tires. My Racers are currently covering 30mm rubber with acres of clearance remaining, and I think 35 is the most I've ever used with them. That's skinny stuff for those brakes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Joe, that begs a question! How fat were you able to go under the Paul's? I find the Paul's to have an industrial chic that is great, but the reason I keep buying their brakes is that they work great. My experience with Tektros has been more mixed, but they're a great value. I'll start with the Tektros and give them a few months. Thanks! [RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.
Brett, I had a caliper-braked Homer that came with the R559 caliper brakes that I eventually swapped for the Paul Racers. The R559's were great brakes, but flexy due to the long arms - I think some people would consider this beneficial added modulation, and some would consider it annoying. You could always use compressionless housing to reduce this sensation if you wanted to. I bought the Pauls for aesthetic/MUSA reasons, and they are a bit less squishy, though not a squish-free brake (they now live on my Cheviot). The Paul's certainly look good and brake well - no arguing there. I'd say deciding between these two brakes, you certainly are limited, but they're both good options. One small thing to note: centerpulls and cantilevers have exposed cable running from the housing stop to the straddle hanger, and if you use a bag like the Swift Fabio's Chest or Zeitgeist, the bag will sit on the cable and potentially compress the brake. I have experienced this using the Paul centerpulls and canti's, and have since moved to using racks with tombstones to support the bags and hold them off the brake cable. you CAN use one of those housing stops that lives at the fork crown (and I've heard they reduce chatter somewhat) but in my opinion they look kinda bad. This problem does not exist with Vbrakes and Sidepulls since the housing runs all the way to the brake.
