Simpleone is canti as well. Earlier info before it was released suggested it
was going to be long reach calipers, but it ended up being built with canti
brakes.

2016-09-29 Thread JohnS
I'm partial to canti-brakes since I bought my first Stumpjumper back in '82
(I had two more in the '90's), so I'm glad to have a QB. It's a blast to
ride! I've started a job near BWI airport and I'm planning to ride the BWI
and B&A trails with it next week. May have to up the chain ring or size
down the cog since it's not nearly as hilly here as it is back home in PA.

Neither is made anymore. At my advanced years and barring a sudden impact, I

2013-05-31 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I had both (the SimpleOne has since decamped to D.C., as my son's commuter).
If I rode them back to back, the QB felt a tad quicker/lighter on its feet, the
SO a bit more laid-back and comfy. SO had 38mm Marathons, QB Jack Brown
Greens, which probably accounted for most of the difference. SO was built up
with heavier parts, too. But really, much more similar than different.

Both are wonderful bikes - the QB is STILL my favorite of all my bikes
(including my Homer, Atlantis, Rohloff Bomba, and Proto-App Mystery Bike).
It's the ultimate "jump on and go."

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam vs. Simpleone: What's the difference?

2013-05-31 Thread Matt Beebe
Congratulations on picking up such a neat bike. I'll add to the quotes
StatrixBob provided, with the description below which is from the Riv site,
and a post here on the ROB by Grant about the differences below that.
The HTA on the QB is 72.5 if you go by the geometry chart, and I think the
tubing may have been slightly lighter.

"Rear Spacing: 120mm. A good width for a single-speed.

Tubing: Butted CrMo steel. The butts are 0.9, the bellies, 0.6, the seat
stays are 0.9, so are the chainstays, and the fork is 1.1 x 0.8. If those
numbers mean nothing to you, rest assured that they mean something to
me/Grant, and they are good.

Top tube upslope: 2-degrees.

Other geologicametrical features: Like all of our bikes, the SimpleOne has
a relatively shallow seat tube angle (72-deg in most sizes), and moderate
head tube (also 72-deg). The BB drop is 73 when the wheel is centered in
the rear dropout. This is a hair higher than our normal frames, but
accounts for the possibility of a fixed gear and the higher clearance
requires. And yet, it is still low-to-medium by industry standards."

>From a post here by Grant:

"On the plus side: The clearance is more than on the QB. The chainstays
are longer. it has a kickstand plate. The fork crown is swirly-girly.
The rear dropouts are the same (our own) model as the Q's and the
angle is the same, so it should be doublable with the pads still one
the rim. But we're selling it as a ONE speed frame, and what you do
with it is up to you. We have QB cranks, though. The fork rake is
delightful. It's not a crafty artisanal frame in the megabuck showy
sense, but some details could certainly shame some frames that cost
thrice as much. I'm looking forward to mine. "

Thanks, Jason. That's the best side-by-side comparison I've seen of
the Quickbeam vs the SimpleOne. For my part, the tangible differences
are a wash. I prefer the the SO's color and clearance, and my green

like muddier colors better.

Oh man. All this talk of "no-brainers" - You guys have my credit card
finger starting to itch!

Does anyone know if a long reach caliper brake will work in front? I know
the frame is designed for cantis but I kind of like the simplicity of a
sidepull on a single-speed. I can always use the canti studs to mount a
rack, so they're not just sittin' there.

Also, what's the max width tire that will fit on the "budget" SO wheels - a
Mavic Open Sport rim I think?

Thanks,

Pete (SingleSixtySidepullSam)

2012-01-04 Thread Eric Norris
So far, so good with the S3X. I have this hub on two different bikes, and both
are working fine. The only issue so far is that the hubs don't like to shift
under a load. If you're already grinding up a hill, it's too late to shift
(unless you can somehow soft pedal for a moment). Other than that, all is well.
They are definitely a conversation starter.

Phil Wood freewheel hubs can be ordered with 120mm end caps for 5 speed use.
You can then buy new end caps to make the hub 130mm, a handy hub
for bob bikes.

Now is someone could put Suntour freewheels back into production we'd
be in business.

Eric how do you like the S3X ?
I'm looking for a hub gear that will stay in gear.

You could use an old 120mm 5-speed, which can still be found.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam vs SimpleOne

2012-01-03 Thread jandrews_nyc
my boss has a 58 Quickbeam. I have a 58 Simpleone. I've ridden both
and feel that I can sort of compare them. I've also worked on his and
built mine up so I've seen a lot up close.
I think Charlie is right in that the Simpleone has very slightly
thicker tubingbut that doesn't really translate to a "tangible
difference" when riding for me. I'm 150lbs. I THINK my Simpleone
has a slightly more raked fork than the Quickbeam, but I'm not sure.
The Simpleone has fancier lugs than his Orange Quickbeam. They both
seem to have the same geometry to the naked eye. What is tangible for
me are the front fork rack eyelets and the four top-rack eyelets in
the back which not all Quickbeams have. Also tangible for me means
having a kickstand plate which the QB doesn't. Also, someone at Riv
will have to confirm, but it seems from looking at the bikes that tire
clearance is just a bit more on the Simpleone, but I haven't
measured. I have been so happy I purchased the Simpleone. It's set
up as a speedy drop-bar single speed and I love it that way, though
I'm sure I'll turn it into something else at some point, i.e. trail
bike, grocery bike, upright, gearedsince it's so versatile.

For $800 it's a no-brainer.

IIRC, the rear spacing is 120mm. I suppose one could spring it to 126 to
fit an old 5 or 6 speed, but I'm not sure that still qualifies as "easily".

2012-01-03 Thread charlie
I think the tubing is a tad thicker which for me is good. (.9x.6x.9 as
opposed to .8x.5x.8) I love mine, it rides really nice and the paint
is understated and woodsy lookingperfect for a bicycle. Only $800
for the frame is a swingin deal. This frame can easily be used with a
hub geared wheel or even a deraileur set up with some compromises if
you wanted to do that.
