It's not a bike ride if you don't get lost. And found. And break
something.

 Ride Report -

I fastidiously checked the weather forecasts every day up to
Wednesday. Rain was predicted. Looked as though a few brief showers
would hit early Thursday morning around and the taper off to nothing
about 9am. Since I was looking forward to riding the custom, I waited
to leave until the rain died out. Got on the 10:37 train in Richmond,
hung up the bike and relaxed for an hour.

Got off in Davis, and just started riding without getting sufficiently
oriented. My plan was to head to Winters and possibly climb to
Monticello dam or climb Cantlowe and return via Pleasants Valley. As
it turned out, I headed south under Interstate 80 (thinking I was
heading west under 113). Eventually, I realized I was not getting any
closer to the hills in the west and realized I had gone south. Made a
couple of turns and headed north through Dixon. Had the pleasure of
pedaling through a stiff headwind. Eventually arrived at Russell Blvd
 and headed west.

The stiff headwind provided excellent appreciation of the crosswind I
encountered when I headed west. I arrived in Winters around 2pm -
after a good two hour ride. Found Steady Eddy's quickly, and settled
in to lunch. Got up after lunch and picked up the bike. Riding away,
the front tire seems a little low. Turns out it's flat. Very strange
since I ride only Scwalbe Maarathon Supremes these days. I become
convinced someone is playing a practical joke on me and has let the
air out of my tire. Pump it up once to see if it goes flat again.
Seems pretty soft. Perhaps I didn't really pump it up hard the first
time. Pump it up hard this time. Goes completely flat. Must not be a
prank. I change the tube and put the front wheel back on. Get back on
the bike - now the right pedal feels really squirrely. Get off the
bike and look it over. The pedal body is much further outboard that it
usually is. It comes off. Turns out the spindle is busted.

Put the pedal body in the bag and start riding back to Davis. Hard to
keep the right foot on the well-greased spindle. Get back to Davis in
well under an hour - but my left knee is starting to hurt - probably
from overcompensating for the right leg that can't seem to stay on the
spindle. Walk around Davis till the Amtrak 4:55 arrives and return to
 the East Bay.

[RBW] Re: Soliciting Suggestions for Day Trip In and/or Around Davis California

2011-12-17 Thread Corwin
Sorry if my post sounded rather down. Down was not my intent. I may
have written the post too soon after the ride. I thoroughly enjoyed
the ride - despite the flat and the trashed pedal. I was happy to be
[mostly] prepared for the mechanical problems. And Steady Eddy's is
truly fantastic. I plan to repeat the ride and get beyond Winters next
time.

I was rather surprised to find my front tire had flatted. Finding the
busted pedal spindle immediately after that compounded things. And my
left knee felt better after about a day and twenty or thirty
ibuprofen.

On behalf of Davis cyclists, I'd like to point out that this is not a typical
experience! Many of us make the trip without flatting, and without parts
falling off our bikes ;-)

Seriously--glad you made it back in one piece, and I hope you enjoyed the parts
of the ride that didn't involve flats and mechanicals.

[RBW] Re: Soliciting Suggestions for Day Trip In and/or Around Davis California

2011-12-06 Thread Bill M.
The loop from Davis over Cantelowe Rd. and back was my favorite ride
back when I lived there (1976 - 1991). I prefer the ride going
westbound over Cantelow road, both because the climb is more
entertaining (it stair-steps up, rather than doing the bulk of the
climbing in one steepish shot), and because the slightly downhill run
northbound on Pleasant Valley Rd. makes for a nice few miles at
speed. It's about 60 miles round trip. There are shops and
restaurants in Winters you can hit outbound and/or returning, and
water and restrooms available at Lake Solano Park at about the 40 mile
mark.

If you need some really stupid climbing, you can head south on
Pleasant Valley and go up Mix Canyon. It's a dead-end road with
pitches up to something like 18%. Ouch!

Sacramento, which is not as scenic but offers many more choices for food and
drink. There's a lot of nothing south of town, although you'll eventually hit
Clarksburg and Locke (interesting history) if you go far enough.

 • In Winters, stop at Steady Eddy's coffee house. You can't miss it--look for
all the bikes outside. It's a very popular stopping point.

 • Davis to Winters and back is about 30-35 miles. If you want to go farther,
consider continuing on Hwy 128 to either Monticello Dam (10 miles from
Winters) or Moscowite Corners (20 miles). There are small stores at both
places. Both of these also add climbing--going to Moscowite involves climbing
Cardiac Grade, which climbs about 750 feet in about 1.5 miles.

 • Another option is to ride from Winters along Pleasants Valley Rd and return
 via Cantelowe Rd, another local climb. The Pleasants Valley side is steeper;
the other side is longer. Nice views of the Sacramento Valley from the top.

I've done all of these on a fixed-gear Quickbeam. They're doable but not easy.

Let me know when you're in town. I may ride with you.
