That's great news! I've been thinking of making an offer, but I'm glad you were able to buy it. You need it more that I do. You know, I would be a wreck if somebody stole my QB. Such an awesome bike. I understand your front rack mounting point preference, it makes it possible to carry a heavier load than you can with a canti mounted rack. Let me know if you're interested in the Azuki. It's a nice frame and it's a shame to have it hanging from the garage rafters. An ABUS Bordo 6000 75cm folding lock will fit in a SaddleSack XS/Keven's bag. 75cm is kinda short for a lock in general, but I find it more useful than a normal-sized U-lock. [RBW] Re: Stolen SimpleOne and a question
I've posted this a couple of times in lock threads... my solution was to pitlock the wheels and seat and use a compact U-lock for securing the frame to something stationary. The U I chose was an Abus Granit Futura. It's small and light. I really like this setup. I park in public places everyday. If your bike is a Riv and worth 3 or 4 thousand dollars, as most Rivs are, spending $180 is rounding error. Once the wheels and seat are pit-locked your bike has little resale value. The Abus is very compact. It's much easier to manage, storage wise, than cable. I bought from: http://www.urbanbiketech.com/default.asp You can secure racks, stems, brakes, etc... with inexpensive security allen bolts: http://www.bicyclebolts.com/ On Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 8:11:13 AM UTC-5, Surlyprof wrote: > > I'm so sorry to hear about the theft. I'm so sorry to hear about the theft. It's horrible that we can't just park a bike and relax without feeling the need to haul around a u-lock and wheel cable. I hope someone reports the bike and it is returned to you. I also wish I had suggestions for a single speed replacement but I have little experience in that area. I know Handsome bases a lot of their line on Grant's Bridgestone designs. Their "Fredward" was a fun bike to test ride and it has cantis like your SimpleOne (http://www.handsomecycles.com/products/fredward-green-beret-frameset?variant=1272300353). Grant had a suggestion in either Just Ride or the Reader to hook your helmet around the frame and wheel. The idea is to at least tangle up the wheel long enough to foil a grab and go theft if you are nearby. I tend to do this if I'm only going a few feet away to grab something. Still not often comfortable with that option in the bike-theft crazy bay area so I've been looking for a compact, u-lock alternative that would fit in a Sackville Saddlesack x-small. Does anyone know of a good alternative? I was thinking of either a small kryptonite cable with a padlock (Kwikset makes one you can match to your housekey) but I can't find a short one. I also found this: http://www.amazon.com/RockBros-Theft-Chain-Folding-Hamburg/dp/B00MN52JR2/ref=sr_1_74?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1433076070&sr=1-74 Has anyone had any experience with this lock? My concern is that, with that many joints, it may be easily defeatable. Hope you are reunited with your SimpleOne. Re: [RBW] Re: Stolen SimpleOne and a question
+1 I have them on both Hillbornes. For me the weight is weight well spent. In low/moderate-risk suburbia I park in lots of places where this is more than what's really called-for but is probably as convenient as locking gets. And in conjunction with a more robust lock it's just that much more dissuasive. My attitude towards security went from "find the best" to "be reasonable" when I had to "steal" my own bike once, due to a lost key. I got first-hand exposure to something that was merely abstract until then: Stealing almost any bike under almost any circumstance is *trivial* to any one who *intends* to do it. Took me 45 seconds, first time trying (honest! :)). Security is about making it really inconvenient, not about making it physically difficult. When I walk away from my bike, I don't imagine it's existentially protected from theft. In my environs, my bikes' double-top-tubes, lugs, wet paint, and super-high handlebars may provide more "protection" than choosing a high-end lock over a low-end lock. [RBW] Re: Stolen SimpleOne and a question
Hello donavanm, Having your bike stolen sucks, hopefully you can get a new set of wheels soon. Here's a couple of suggestions for you. High Option: If you don't come across a QB/S1 any time soon, I would recommend the 2012 Salsa Casseroll. I bought one last spring when I couldn't find a QB/S1. The Casseroll was NOS and was available at an independent bike shop that's about an hour from my house. Great bike, very similar geometry, feel and features as the QB/S1, canti brakes, chromoly frame, light touring geometry, semi-horizontal drop outs, lots of braze on mounting points for racks, fenders, three water bottles and frame peg. The Riv Little Big Bens fit, fillet brazed not lugged. I paid $700 for the frame, fork and custom front rack. I'm using it as my commuter and have it set up fixed. The QB that I bought this year came with custom wheels built up with Phil Wood hubs which are very nice. I replaced the QB rear wheel with the two speed fixed Bendix and mounted the Phil hub rear wheel on the Casseroll. I did have to change the end caps to match the Casseroll 130 OLD. The Casseroll had a limited production run and are kind of rare, so it might be just as hard to find as a QB/S1. http://salsacycles.com/bikes/archive/2012_casseroll Low Option: As you had mentioned another option would be to build up an old touring bike. I have an Azuki Elite frame/fork which I think is late '70's that I would be willing to sell for $50 plus shipping. It's 62cm chromoly lugged touring frame that was made in Japan. Semi-horizontal drop outs and eyelets for fenders, but none for racks nor water bottles. Requires center pull or side pull brakes, not canti. Rear OLD is 126mm. Red paint polished up nicely, but it does have some scratches. Azuki was make by Kawamura (Nishiki) for West Coast Cycle. I think building it up as a Frankin bike using the S1 fork and a Paul racer rear brake would be pretty cool. Let me know if you're interested, I can provide pictures. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nishiki_%28bicycle%29 Good luck, JohnS On Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 11:54:45 AM UTC-4, donavanm wrote: > > As the subject says, theres another stolen SimpleOne out there now. I hate to hear that. Hunt that person down like the rat they are. You know all this but leave flyers or e-mail pics to bike shops, pawn shops and keep an eye out on Craigslist, e-bay. I feel your pain...I hope you get it back. > >> -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
