[RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-12-14 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Thanks for the update, Edwin!

FYI, I didn't install the metal sleeves I bought. I did spin a valve nut
all the way down before installing the tube. It hasn't been that long, but
no problem so far!

[RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-12-14 Thread Edwin W
Update:
Had another one of these valve base flats. Different rim (CR18), 38mm
Vittoria Randonneur tires.
Tube: Kenda.
Replaced it with one of the Riv-sold Rubenas that looks like it has
reinforcement at the base. And I slipped an extra piece of tube over the
stem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-27 Thread Edwin W
Dareck,

I've been waiting to hear of someone putting the nut on the INSIDE of the rim.
Makes sense to me, but I wasn't sure.
On closer examination, I can tell my valve hole is a bit wider than the usual
so there is more wiggle room. I redid the rim tape and cleaned everything up.
Might try the nut on the inside so the valve stem base does not get into the
hole.

Sorry to come in late on this. Velocity replaced my rear rim.

The first time I saw it seemed to be an electrolysis issue which is how I
descibed it to them. They no longer use that particular material on newer
rims. The original set were Aeroheads made in Australia. They have
replaced quite a few evidently. They were quite nice about it. They even
offered to re-lace the wheel for me, but I was in a hurry at the time.

Interesting theory about tube valves though. ;)

Same here. My LBS used to stock Continentals, which worked great; I
typically ran them for 3K-5K miles. Ever since they dropped the Contis and
replaced them with Kenda/Q-Tubes, the stupid things blow all the time. I've
been going out to RBWHQ for Contis for the last year, but I just noticed
that the Rubenas are back in stock and so the Contis are gone. I haven't
quite mustered the consumer will to spring for Schwalbes, but that's the
logical next step. I'd been thinking of getting a pair or two of Challenge
Strada Biancas from Wiggle, so that's a good opportunity to load up on Euro
tubes for cheap.

I'm not sure who the OEM is for Bontrager or Novara (REI house label)
tubes, but I assume they're also Kendas. Eccch.

Rim tape seems fine. No burrs on valve stem hole. I put an extra layer

Running out of options here! Any suggestion? If not, is this possibly a

Re: [RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-21 Thread cyclotourist
Yes, could be bad luck. But kinda' weird only one wheel giving me this
problem, even intermittently. I'll try these sleeves and see how it work
out. Have to drill out the hole a little to get them to fit. What could go
wrong?

And yes Q-tubes are usually Kenda, but I think I've seen a few other mfgs
as well. They all have removable valve stem which is kinda' nice.

Re: [RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-21 Thread David Banzer
The product you linked to is for using presta tubes in rims that are
drilled for Schrader valves.
Definitely seems like the braking force on the front wheel factors into
this. Or you just have bad luck with tubes.
The Q-tubes, I believe, are just repackaged versions of Kenda or similar
maker. I don't believe they're anything special. I've used them myself and
had no problems though.

[RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-18 Thread Bill Lindsay
I suspect Kurt is on the right track. You've got six bikes all running
700x35-43 tubes. Use this front wheel with the narrowest, highest pressure
tire that you run, and see if it still eats tubes.

I just scrolled back to your OP, and see that we're talking about 3 tubes
in 2 years. So, it'll take at least a year before you are even halfway
confident that you fixed it. haha, I won't hold my breath.

Bill Lindsay

P.S. Velocity will only blog about you if you ship them your wheel with a
note that says "it failed, replace it"

2015-09-18 Thread Kurt Manley
I have had a similar problem with stems getting torn. It was after I
switched to wider tires and the valve stem would consistently tear from the
tube. Usually when descending a hill where braking forces were high. Like
you it was always the same rim. I stopped using it as I figured the tires
wire too wide and causing the issue. On mine the rim tape eventually
started to slip as well. Never switched back to skinnier tires to see if
the problem went away just changed the rim for a wider one.

Re: [RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

Did changing to higher end tubes work out? You and David both hint at the
tube being the culprit so could be. I'll try getting a nicer one (of course
just put in a Riv order yesterday...) and give it a try. But even if that's
a fix, shouldn't a rim not cause a problem like that?

Re: [RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-18 Thread Edwin W
I've had the same problem with a VO rim. I don't have many flats, and in the
last five years and 10,000 or more miles over half have been valve stem on that
rim. Do try Schwalbe or other higher quality tubes. It might not be a defective
tube, but a rim that needs a higher "octane" tube, so to speak.

Blasted rim!

Re: [RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-18 Thread cyclotourist
Interesting thought. They are Q-tubes. 700X35-43mm.
But, the exact same tubes I have on six bikes, including the rear wheel on
this one w/ same Synergy rims. This is the only rim out of 12 that is doing
this???

What tubes were you using? It sounds more like defective tubes than a
defective rim.
