[RBW] Re: Was a 55cm double top tube Hillborne ever made?
The main difference between my (old) 56cm double TT and my (new) 55 cm single TT Sams are that I used to be able to grasp the lower TT to lift the bike without worrying about the frame pump, which I used to place between the TT's! Actually, my original was first generation and had a "made to a price" quality to the brazing and the paint. When Riv raised the price, my guess is that they had Waterford try harder. My new one is as aesthetically as nice as my Atlantis, IMHO. A second top tube provides an added canine safety feature if: You have dismounted and are using the bike to block a charging dog. The extra TT makes it that much harder for the dog to leap through your frame and latch onto your leg , especially if you have two waterbottle cages and a frame pump on the bike! [RBW] Re: Was a 55cm double top tube Hillborne ever made?
I re-checked the one on the blug and it is sidepull. I will continue my blissful contentment with my orange, canti-sam. Despite the fact that there is no functional need for 2tt on a 56, I've always liked the unique aesthetic of the 2tt Rivs. But, it's good to be content with what one has. However... those tire clearances on the Joe Appaloosa could lure the most content riders! John -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I did NOT need to know about that web special! I love my orange, canti Hillborne but always desired the double tt model. Can't believe they have one on web specials. thats how i justified my sam. i knew that 56 was moving to 55 and that neither would likely have dbl top tubes again, so when one popped up, i couldnt stop myself. canti-sams are special too though. i passed on a 56 double top tube canti sam before buying current sam, and it still stings. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I agree that they might look cool but no reason to have a 2nd top tube IMO. Re: [RBW] Re: Was a 55cm double top tube Hillborne ever made?
I had one of the earlier Sam Hills, with cantis. I forget if it was a 55 or a 56, but it had only 1 tt, and I am pretty sure this model antedated the 2-top-tube fad. Amirite? Mine had a 59 cm tt, which was pretty darned long for a 55, though the slacker (??71??) st angle took care of part of this length. Patrick Moore, who sees absolutely no reason except "style" why a 55 to 60 cm all rounder-type frame needs 2 tts. [RBW] Re: Was a 55cm double top tube Hillborne ever made?
per drew's point, it is probably a 56 and the seller got confused when he looked up the current listings. i believe the 56cm has a slightly longer top-tube measurement (59 vs 57) if i'm reading the specs correctly. the current 58 is closer to the old 56. Re: [RBW] Re: Was a 55cm double top tube Hillborne ever made?
That's correct. One little detail: when they were single-color orange and some came with cantis and some came with sidepulls in 2010, the 2TT started to appear on the 60's but not yet the 56's. I remember because when I bought mine at the end of that year, my thinking was, "ooh, I can still get a 1TT 60 even though the 2TT is on the grow." Sometime after that, a new batch came along where both the 56's and 60's were 2TT, and that's when it became clear that Riv was serious about these 2TT's!. (And of course, 64's were always 2TT.) The Web Special one right now is sweet, because it's orange but with cream headtube. That's a bit rare. (But Manny has one!) At $1150, I'm surprised that hasn't sold yet. Deal! -Jim W.
