Re: [RBW] Re: What is the Rivish upgrade from Synergy rims?

2013-05-23 Thread William
Tires do fit more snugly on the 650B version of the A23 than on my Velocity
Synergies in 650b. That is a very very good thing, in my opinion. The
only significant shortcoming of Velocity Synergies in my opinion is that
it's very difficult to get tires to run straight on them. The A23 is a
tubeless ready rim, and as such had a very shallow well at the bead seat.
The consequence is two-fold. First, if you don't modify your tire
mounting techniques, you might need to use a tirelever to mount your tires.
Second, you'll never have to try and work the tire bead into balance
around the rim.

Disclaimers/qualifiers: I've read that there was an oversized batch of
Velocity Synergies in 650B, and I've never had one of those. I've also
read that there was a batch of Synergies that cracked at the spoke holes
and I've never had one of those.

So, among 650B rims

The things I prefer about the Synergies: I like the O/C idea, I like the
parallel side walls and the height of the side walls. I like the price and
the weight.
The things I prefer about the A23: A little lighter than the Synergy.
Inexpensive like the Synergy. Tires run straighter. I wish it had
eyelets. I wish it had taller and parallel side walls
The things I prefer about the Pacenti: Wicked light. Eyelets. Parallel
tall sidewalls. Tires run straight. But, they are expensive and you can
see them deform around the spoke holes when the wheel is properly
tensioned. Will it hold up under normal use? We'll see.

Toshi, my experience is about the same as yours: it depends on both the
rim, and which tire you're mounting.

My 700c Dyads have, overall, been the easiest to mount tires on, no
difficulties encountered, regardless of tire; some tires are easier than
others (Pasela vs Ruffys, vs CX tires), but none have been hard.

My 650b Synergys, depends on the tire: Conti Tour Rides were not fun to fit
on 'em, but Pacenti NeoMotos were very easy (almost too easy, actually).

Hetres on my 650b A23 are the worst I've encountered for mounting; I like
how straight the A23's are, were really easy to build, and it seems to be a
light yet stout rim. I love the Hetres, the way they ride. But mounting
Hetres on the A23's took awhile, and levers, and effort; I hope the tires
stretch out such that they would be easy to remount if I get a flat,
because I wouldn't want to remount it sitting on the shoulder of a highway.

I've not tried 700c A23's yet, since I've got the Dyads, but may one day.
And I wish there were 650b Dyads around still (especially if in 36h).

I will say, though, I do suspect that it's the 650b's that have a little
more variability in actual rim diameter and tire sizes versus 700c's:
700c's have been the bread-n-butter for so long for all of the
manufacturers, that I think they're just more consistent, whereas the 650b
market is newer, smaller, and still has a larger range in sizes happening
for tires and rims. Maybe not, but, that's my impression.

Re: [RBW] Re: What is the Rivish upgrade from Synergy rims?

2013-05-21 Thread Michael Hechmer
If I were up-grading, I would begin with tires. Choose lighter more
supple. That rules out cheaper but not necessarily more flat resistant.
Next I would look at hubs, unless I had a really substandard rim. If you
listen to experienced wheel builders they all rate Mavic and Velocity rims
highly. e.g from Peter Whites web site, Velocity and Mavic make the best
rims I've found. Until recently I have ridden exclusively on 700c wheels
and primarily on Mavic rims. Never had a bad one. I dented a Velocity rim
on a curb, that wasn't the rims fault. For years I rode Campy NR hubs and
found them durable and very easy to service. Ultegra hubs do seem to hold
up better than the 105s, but for the money I have found the White Ind Hubs
to be super. I use them on both my Ram Bilenkey tandem. I have a lot of
bikes to maintain, mine, my wives, my daughters son-in-laws and have
really come to appreciate low maintenance parts. That said, I have never
been willing to spring for a PW hub; it just feels like overkill. But I do
like PW BBs.

Michael

I just bought a fabulous Saluki with a basic wheel set. At some point I
will probably upgrade the hubs. Rims, well maybe.

I had to get a replacement Synergy OCR rim from Velocity because the
original rim cracked around several of the eyelets. I've also found that
the Synergy rims in 650b are not very consistent in their diameter.
Different Synergy rims that I've purchased at different times have varied
in outer diameter by more than half a millimetre, and this difference
causes quite a difference in the difficulty of getting tyres to mount
without wobble. On some Synergy rims I have no problem getting a tyre to
mount true, and on other rims it's a real battle to get the same tyre to
mount without substantial wobble.

Made in the USA, too!

I also have A23s. And one remaining Aerohead.

(more than one 650B bike...)

2013-05-17 Thread Peter Morgano
I know cracking around the eyelets is/was? an issue but it cant be that
every set of synergy rims are cracking around the eyelets. Was it only an
issue with the Non-symmetrical rear setup? Mine have carried my generously
large body for a while with no issues, granted I only do about 1k miles a
year but it is on NYC streets so they aren't babied.

[RBW] Re: What is the Rivish upgrade from Synergy rims?

2013-05-17 Thread Michael

Here are the answers to the questions you all had.

A: My rims are fine now. I don't want to upgrade yet, but will whenever
they need it. That's why I wanted to know. Maybe by then there will be
something new on the market anyway.

A: I don't want the Atlases because I use 40mm wide tires and any wider and
they won't fit under my Longboards.
I am under the impression that the same tire on a wider rim will be wider
when inflated.

We should get empiric confirmation of the actual width of a Hetre
mounted on an Atlas rim.

My experience has shown that a wider rim with the same tire results in the
same, if not slightly lower profile(height) tire. It definitely does not
get taller !

No real horses in this race, but
1) Atlas is a stout rim
2) Pacenti (PL23 i presume???) is a weight-weenie rim
3) Synergy, what's the problem again???
4) A23: the great unknown, to me.

Red Hetres on Atlas rim: Front 40.5mm / Rear 41.6mm. Difference is likely due
to having a higher pressure on the rear tire.

Forgot to add that front Atlas rim is 32 holes and rear is 36. Should be
irrelevant, but just in case. External rim width is the same for both: 25.5mm
