I think the 700x49 fluted were a one time run. They're just about prefect

The fenders are SKS Chromoplastics. It took a bit of finagling, drilling,
hacksawing, and screw searching to get a workable line. I'm pretty sure
they're P45s.

Joe, do you mean 700x50 fenders? Their site indicates they sell 45's and
50's, no 49's. I am running the 45's on my Rom and it seems that's all that

That is weird, Luke. My 63 C-Rom fit Pasela 32s + VO 700x49 fenders nicely.
The brake bridge is a little low on these and becomes the tight spot (I

[RBW] Re: Canti-Rom

2015-04-15 Thread jpp
I have always liked Brifters. I often think my next bike I will switch
back to them. In my experience the breaking aspect of them is really
exaggerated. I used to work at a bike shop and actually saw very few
failures ever. Plus my previous commuter bike had 105 STI's and I never
had a problem with them, even after thousands of miles.

On my Ram, I converted my VO fenders to using a Berthoud strut; I was
catching my toe on the eye-bolt/strut/cup-washer assembly on the back of
the front fender: by switching to the Berthoud strut, which is flattened
across the back, and uses two smaller bolts off to the sides from the
center, it's really improved the situation... the times my toe does come
on contact, which is far less often now, it can slide down the fender
instead of catching. (Canti-Rom is fenderless... but, w/ 40's in there,
I'm not getting a fender in there, too...)

Weird, I have 32 Soma branded Panaracers on my Canti-Rom with Honjo fenders
and they fit fine (not spacious, but definitely sufficient). If you're
using the Velo-Orange struts, that could be more of an issue since the
bolts protrude pretty far into the interior. I'm using Berthoud struts,
which use much smaller bolts. Weird that no one has come up with a system
that puts the bolt head on the inside and the nut on the outside, but I
guess that would look a little ugly.

I tried to fender a 32 pasela under my hammered VO fenders on my 63cm

[RBW] Re: Canti-Rom

2015-04-10 Thread Dave Johnston
The Rom's and Rams are awesome they have a nice sport touring geometry so
they feel like a nice neutral road bike. It's hard to find a canti equiped
bike that can handle 35mm tires that doesn't feel like a hybrid or Touring
bike. I wish my Ram had come with canti's, I like the power and feel better
and there is more clearance for fenders.

I love my Ram, my first Riv, and have set it up for long road rides.
Then I got the Bomba, it's a load-bearer brute. But then I picked up my
canti-Rom... I left it simple, put MSO's on it, and it's become my
most-ridden bike now... my frequent ride on our local Greenbelt, the Bomba
is 'overkill' for it, and the fenders on the Ram aren't happy coming down
the gravel hill; but the canti-Rom is the perfect bike for that ride. Has
become my go-to bike.Enjoy that one... canti-Roms are awesome.

I'm really am happy with Campy Veloce Ergopower levers running shimErgo
10-8. You can get a pair for around $100 if you shop on-line. I really
like them off-road as it's much quicker to shift in techy terrain.

and I always liked the canti Roms... I prefer canti's to caliper brakes by
a far margin, but could never find one on my size.

[RBW] Re: Canti Rom Sizing

2010-08-06 Thread EricP
Am going to be a contrarian here. At 6' and 89 PBH normally I'd be on
a 61 or so frame. Except for the Bleriot, every single time I've
tried a Rivendell in that size it's felt like I've been on the rack.
Arms straight out with no bend to reach the hoods. Scoot forward on
saddle to get into drops. For those bikes, an 8, 7 or even 6 cm stem
would work best for me.

Yes, if I lost a lot more weight, would probably have more stomach
clearance and then could bend over easier and wouldn't need to
compromise setup.

Just pointing out that for some of us, top tube length is something to
take into consideration.

[RBW] Re: Canti Rom Sizing

2010-08-05 Thread Michael_S
I think that a 59cm is on the tall side of the range for someone 5'
9". As Seth said ,standover is usually secondary to the Top tube
measurement. Of course stem length and saddle setback can adjust for
minor ( 1-2cm) differences. I usually try to start with the top tube
measurement and a 100mm stem and pick a bike size that can work 10mm
either way. To me a bike with a 7 or 8 cm stem is a sign of a too big
bike. FWIW I am 5'11" and have a 85 PBM and usually end up on a 58 or
59 cm frame.

Well, I won't get to keep it for long. It's getting a headset pressed on today
and it is off to my brother's house for him.
...

hmmm..

If anyone out there has a romulus in a 59 or a 61 they are considering thinning
out they should let me know, I may want to be all matchy-matchy with my
brother. :) Or maybe I should wait to see what next year brings from riv.

Congrats on such a nice bike man! Those are pretty hard to find, I
understand. Plus, I'm guessing the cantis will let you run slightly
larger tires with fenders? I agree, the Romulus and Redwood are
among the nicest bikes Rivendell has put out there. It's a shame
they couldn't be continued for very long.

I had a canti-rom for awhile. It was a wonderful bicycle for long road
rides, and I liked the simple lugs, 1-color paint, etc.

Actually, the lugs on the Atlantis and other Japanese frames got much
more ornate toward the end. Perhaps GP thought that fancier lugs would
help justify the rapidly increasing prices during the last couple
years, or maybe the extra cost in the lugwork seemed tiny compared to
the extra cost from currency exchange. In any case, the simpler,
rounded lugs of ~2004/2005-ish were more of a middle point than an
ultimate end of the evolution of these frames.
