i was riding my 54 Rambouillet 700c downhill recently. there was a rattle from the front fender it got worse suddenly i got my hands on the bars and the front fender mounting hardware came loose and rolled between the tire and the fender this tore the fender off and threw it in front of the bike Questions the fenders were vo metal not hammered not round whatever the third option was they never fit especially well and were noisy is this the nature of fenders? when i replace the fender is there some option others have liked better? or should i order another pair of vos and just replace the front? jack browns for tires thanks for the expertise bo bellingham -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. RE: [RBW] best fenders for Rambouillet? WTB question
Properly fitted alloy fenders should be very solid -- no reason for them to be making noise. And I have metal fenders on a number of my bikes. But having said that, if I were installing fenders on a new bike now, I'd give very serious consideration to any fender that has something like the quick release that comes on the SKS fenders that Riv sells. The piece is here: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/fe83.htm One version of the fenders Riv sells with the safety clip are here: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/fe2.htm These are the cream colored ones, which (if they would fit on your Rambouillet) would look really good, IMO. I'm sure you could make your own version of the Secu-Clip, but they're only $4 (or included in the package if you buy the SKS fenders), and it's a real safety feature. (Also makes it easier to install and remove fenders.) And lastly, I think that if you hear a new noise from your bike, you should inspect it immediately (or at least as soon as you can, given surrounding conditions). New noise is often a warning of a new problem (maybe easily fixable, but worth investigating). -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of bo richardson Sent: Thursday, July 24, 2014 1:05 PM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] best fenders for Rambouillet? VO Zeppelin? Does VO supply the leather washers? That's what most people I hear with Honjos say quiets down the rattling. Thanks to Portland Design Works, you no longer have to choose between metal fenders and some kind of secu-clip: https://www.ridepdw.com/goods/spare-parts/fmf-safety-tabs For fender hardware generally, Nylock nuts are your best friend, especially in hard-to-reach places. Locktite is probably your second-best friend, because sometimes you can't use a Nylock. Re: [RBW] best fenders for Rambouillet? WTB question
VO's do come with leather washers, though they're not great ones. Leather washers should be installed at a point where the fender itself touches frame (chainstay/seatstay mounts, under fork crown). I think what cuts down on noise the most is that they're properly installed and secured. Having a front rack mount for the front definitely helps secure the front. The perceived noise I believe comes from gravel/very-tiny-rocks that may bounce around. Rock on metal is louder than rock on plastic. Re: [RBW] best fenders for Rambouillet? WTB question
I had very solid and noise free fenders with the Berthoud stainless steels and Honjo hammered aluminums that I used on one commuter. I remember banging the trailing edge of the front Berthoud on a high curb when I carelessly forgot to lift the wheel as I dropped off. BAM! I got off fearing I'd ruined the fender and my ride, to find that the only damage was that the fender bowed out a bit under the down tube. A couple of firm shoves put it back in order. Caveat: As Jan points out, metal fenders will break if attached under stress. My rear Honjo cracked after ~2 years of commuting under the brake bridge where I'd forced the bend. I've not had this problem with plastic fenders (which I always force shape). Plastics: I've used PB and SKS 60s off road with no rattles or failure; none on road with these brands and narrower models, a fortiori.
