Re: [RBW] Always heard this about latex tubes

2016-05-24 Thread Ron Mc
one other place latex tubes will get you. If you have a tire cut that goes
through the casing, they will balloon out and pop. For this reason, it's
good to carry a butyl tube, which is not elastic enough to do this, and
will get you home.

ps - the weak beads is why I finally gave up on Strada Biancas. The beads
will stretch out before the tread wears out. I replaced them with Stampede
Pass 32mm last weekend, latex tubes, and really enjoyed their maiden ride.
I tried one before and didn't like it in comparison to Strada Biancas, but
I think it was using a butyl tube with it.

nothing "really, now" about it. Latex tubes were the first. They go
hand-in-hand with supple tires - they already come in the best fine-casing
tubulars (sew-ups).

they were also in every pneumatic tire made in the nineteen-naughties-40s,
and if you find one, it's very likely still usable today (the vulcanized
tire won't be).

This is only now and really to you. Counting tubulars, I've been riding
latex tubes forever. ok, it's really only about a dozen years they have
been offered as separate tubes from the high-grade supple tubulars they
always come in.
I tried butyl tubes, I can't do it. My latex tubes are calling me.
Butyl tubes are a chemistry set invention trying to duplicate the
properties of natural latex.
Natural latex is better - it's Much more elastic and it lasts longer.
As Steve pointed out, sometimes this extra-high elasticity can work against
you. If you have a tire with a weak bead, they can squeeze through to blow
out.
But it won't be the drama that Steve extapolated, It will be a pop, very
likely a small hole, and even casual deflation, and I've even patched and
re-used latex tubes after it's happened.
But most times, the extra elasticity is all in your favor.

You patch these with a piece of latex cut from an old tube and tubie
mastic, and the patch is permanent. Unlike butyl patches, latex patches
stretch.

Alas, still none apparently in 559 or 571 sizes, though -- the
triathlon/650C sites all agree that the only latex in 26" are in tubulars.

I wonder if the very light (70 gram) Michelin butyls are as/almost as good?

And there is this, which I may try:

Has anyone done this?

Even better would be tubeless, of course.

They also reward lower pressures - they actually become too bouncy at too

Patrick, the subtleness of your descriptions sometimes escapes me, but I'd
venture to say that the latex tubes on the Compass tires makes them feel a
lot smoother. Whether they actually roll faster, I can't tell with one
ride. I did feel faster because the ride was so smooth.

I was using the super thin Schwalbe tubes, but the latex tubes were very
perceptibly smoother with the same tires.

What would be the risk of trying to go with a wider tube in a narrower
tire, assuming you are able to mount it without pinching it against
the rim? Would it crease inside the tire and therefore tear?

The risk is that you get a fold of tube caught under the tire bead --
extremely likely with a tube that's too wide -- and as you inflate the
tube it wedges the tire right off the rim and you get an explosive
blowout that will cause you to crap your pants, make your ears ring and
will totally destroy the tube. If you're lucky, it'll happen before
you're done pumping. If you're not lucky you'll get out on the road and
have your blowout while you're riding. And that's closer to a
guarantee than a mere risk.

Note, it's also possible they're simply re-rating them and changing the
package to hit the 650b market. Could be the reason for the CRC closeout
price...

I saw these, but I'm concerned they'd be too big for 650b 42mm (1.6") wide
tires, as they state 1.9-2.2".

What would be the risk of trying to go with a wider tube in a narrower
tire, assuming you are able to mount it without pinching it against the
rim? Would it crease inside the tire and therefore tear?

Maybe I'll try it just to find out...

Re: [RBW] Always heard this about latex tubes

2016-05-02 Thread Ron Mc
Hi Rene,
Challenge makes a large cross/gravel size - best online price is Outside
Outfiters. I just received two in the mail from there today - I keep these
stocked.
Price is about the same as Schwalbe Ultralight. The difference is
vulcanized butyl v. super-elastic latex.
Wiggle for some reason can't sell them to the US - probably an agreement
with Challenge and whoever imports them to the US.
One thing I really like about them is patching. Keep an old tube, cut a
piece, glue it over the hole with tubie mastic - squeeze it with something
overnight (carry a spare new tube for roadside).
The patch is permanent and the even stretches, unlike hard patches for
butyl tubes.
Vittoria makes road sizes (28mm) and Wiggle has a good price on these.
They all have slick valve stems (and removable cores), and I put o-rings
over the stems thinking it helps with shock and vibration.

maybe ti does nothing, but I will keep doing it, because I like it (one
package of o-rings, which I bought for something else lasts forever).

Michelin also makeslatex tubes - never tried them.
I'll make the argument that latex rides better than tubeless, but notably
better than butyl.
All kind of arguments that it runs cooler and faster than butyl - no
question it feels different - it feels softer and faster.
Downside is you have to pump them - every day when you ride, and at least
once/week when you don't.
If you ever cut open one of your butyl tubes, water will pour out that has
collected from your pump. If you cut open a latex tube, it will be dry,
because water evaporates through them.
(I run latex in every bike except my daughter's upright with 42mm Soma SV -
I run Schwalbe Ultralight in those, so I don't have to pump them every
week).
I actually carry a mix of spares, butyl and latex. Latex can sometimes be
hard to avoid a pinch, because it is so crazy stretchy. Sometimes on the
side of the road I'll install butyl to get home.
Next time that tires comes off, though, latex is going back on.

Re: [RBW] Always heard this about latex tubes

2016-05-02 Thread René Sterental
Who makes latex tubes? And how do they compare to the Schwalbe ultralight
tubes?
