[RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq
There was some discussion on MTBR in regards to truss vs unicrown. Believe consensus was that there is slightly better breaking performance on the Truss due to less flex but that the unicrown is more than adequate. At least from my experience the adaptors "kick out" production racks too much so you end up with them sitting too high and the rack slanting up. For a custom rack that is not a problem though. Re: [RBW] Re: bar height
I feel like setting bar height in isolation is likely silly. I have 4 bicycles and each has a different bar height. The bike's geometry and purpose dictate bar height and bar shape to a degree. On my brevet bike I run drop bars below seat with a longish stem On my Cheviot I run them above saddle and the bars sweep back quite a bit On my mountain bike I run wide bars with a short stem above and below and at seat-level depending on situation. Of the 3 examples all feel optimal for each bike, but running bosco-mooses and the brevet bike and drops with a longish stem on the Cheviot would not make me happy or comfortable. tarp tent double rainbow is another great option. MUSA and very light for the size. I use their Contrails model for places I can't use my Hammock (mine is a Dutch, with a tadpole tarp). [RBW] Planet Bike ALX 50mm Rolled Lip?
Hi All, looking for a 50mm fender that offers the most clearance. Usually go with sks P50 for that, but just stumbled across the Planet Bike ALX version. Does anyone have experience with both? What were your thoughts? I know I can fit Honjo 50mm fenders but with 38mm tires clearance is too tight for my taste due to rolled edges and deep profile. PBs look shallower so might be the ticket. [RBW] Re: Trigger shifters on swept-back bars - Jones or others
Use triggers on Jones bars for both the dropper post and the 11 speed shifter (integrated via i-spec with the brake lever). Trigger on Choco- and Bosco-mooses too. They work great and there is enough real estate on the bars to make them not get in the way. On the Choco I ran the shifter right by the right side intersections of the "V" bar and the main bar. On the Bosco I run the shifter on the right side about 2/3 down right before the bar bends into the flat bar portion. Personally I like triggers over bar ends as they are in a less vulnerable position. Plus a lot of miles are on bumpy terrain where indexed shifting works better for me. Less trimming and more control since I can actually keep my hands on the bars while shifting. [RBW] Experience with Wolf elliptical chainring?
I use an absolute black oval ring on my Jones mtb. the theory behind it is that it smoothes out peaks and valleys of power to the drivetrain and thus resulting in more traction. Been running one since they first came out. I really wanted to dismiss the ring when I first got it but the hype feels true to me. Nothing really drastic but felt noticeable, especially in singlespeed mode. Never bothered with them on "road" bikes but will consider once current rings wear out. Re: [RBW] "We’ll have “classic” single speed frames again...."
This is silly. It is a single speed or a manual shifter bike. For single speed you need an EBB, sliders, or horizontatal drops. Adding a "dangler" to it is like saying "I am not shifting my derailer bike so it is a single speed". regarding vertical drops, yes better, but not as good as through axles once you enter disc territory. Better for caliper braked derailer bikes though, IF the frame is straight enough. [RBW] Re: Boyz on the Hoods: 4th Annual Escape from Super Bowl Weekend Campout
For fancier lighter tents check out tarptent.com. I have their contrail and it is a great tent. You will have seam seal it yourself and supply a tyvek ground sheet. Hammock camping is well worth looking into too. If permitted and suitable for the environment I prefer the hammock, but still use the tent quite a bit since trees are not everywhere and some campsites forbid them. In general though being above the dirt and wet is more pleasant than on the dirt and wet. Other drawbacks of the hammock are setup time takes longer to get it perfect. More bulk for similar warmth. A pain in the butt to share with someone. Learning curve. Research time wasted ;-). In the end, having both is nice. If I had to go with just one I would go with a tent, but sleep much better in a hammock. IN ADDITION AND ONLY SOMEWHAT RELATED: for those of you who own tarps - bring them. We had one rainy year and having tarps to string over the "communal area" immensely improved the experience. I will bring a 6'X8' and cord, but more is always better. See you all soon! [RBW] Re: Boyz on the Hoods: 4th Annual Escape from Super Bowl Weekend Campout
I will coming from Healdsburg north of SR. My two plans are as follows: 1. Dry plan: show up at around noon, ride Annadel until dusk or until my legs quit (whichever comes first), then head over for dinner and camping. This version will likely have me driving down with a bunch of local firewood and other camp favorites. Can easily pickup 4 more people in the north bay too so if anyone wants a ride down let me know. 2. Wet weather: Ride bike down from Healdsburg around 11am with a bunch of scenic detours but sparing the trails at Annadel to not cause undue damage. Happy to bike down with anyone that wants to join the fun or meet up en route. Both options will regroup at key points so no one gets lost or left behind. for the past year Inahve really come to prefer salsa cowchipper bars over noodles or compass rando bars. [RBW] Re: What is maximum stem height on Joe Appaloosa 51cm?
There should be some minimum insertion / max height marks on the stem. Usually some vertical lines. Insert stem until you can't see them to get to max height. Hope this helps. [RBW] Re: What're the best cantilever brakes out there?
Another nice set of Cantis were the recent iteration Campagnolo put out. I believe they were made for them by Tektro. They are the best cantis I have ever uses and I continue to have them on 2 bikes (have used Pauls, Shimano, Empella, Mafac in the past). I don't think they are in production anymore but you might get lucky used. Here the model I am referring to (not my listing or anyone I know): https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Campagnolo-CX-cantilever-brakes-black-good-condition/254200384346?hash=item3b2f860b5a:g:RVkAAOSw1LdctCdQ Best, Clayton Scott HBG, CA On Sunday, April 14, 2019 at 5:00:01 PM UTC-7, Erik Wright wrote: > > I'm thinking about getting canti posts brazed onto my sidepull Sam > Hillborne to fit a wider tire / make wide tire installation easier.
