[RBW] Watter bottle recommendations?
Hello all, I'm new here. As for my Riv cred, I commute on an early Road Standard. I have been using Blackburn water bottle cages on my bikes for the last few years because I like their classic look, and the fact that you can easily secure them to a bike without braze-ons. However, I have bent two of them through normal use, and now my water bottles tend to flop around and fall out. What would you recommend for a less-flimsy water bottle cage? I've been using the smaller size Kleen Kanteen bottle and some standard plastic bottles. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Watter bottle recommendations?
Those Arundel cages look pretty nice, but it looks like I'd have to use a bottle with the indentation - whereas the King Iris might allow me to use a taller cylindrical stainless steel bottle, like the bigger Kleen Kanteens. I think I'll check one of those out. Thanks, all! And wow, I could have titled this thread a little better, heh... I must have had 3-watt dynamo lights on the brain. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] WTB: Moustache bars
I'd like to try some mustache handlebars on my mountain bike. Drop me a line to let me know what you have and how much you'd like. I'll try to get back to you this weekend. [RBW] Raised the bars another inch yesterday. Wow!
My front brake cable was holding me back. When I swapped out the short, long-reach stem that came on my secondhand Road Standard for a tall, short-reach stem - I didn't change any cables. I realized after about a year on the bike that I had apparently wrapped my bars backward (the tape was starting to unravel), so I took the opportunity to re-do the front brake cable. I loosened the stem just to see if I had any more room - kept raising - kept raising - and bam! There was the line! I fixed up the brakes, re-wrapped in the proper direction, and tidied everything back up, and wow - the riding experience really changed! I had thought for a long time that this frame might be a little small for me - I have just a little bit more than a fistful of seatpost showing, and the standover is good- but I've been comfortable on taller frames. I just really didn't like the feeling of riding in the drops. But at the new height - I am comfortable in every position on the handlebars. I think that Grant Peterson fellow must be on to something... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] 609mm rims Schwalbe tires from Rivendell
I wanted to run wider tires on my Rivendell Road Standard, but 700c x 28 was the max with fenders and brake clearance. After a long conversation with Grant Peterson, he mentioned that Rivendell had some 609 rims made - just a bit smaller than the 700c (622) rims. I ordered a set of rims and tires and had my LBS build them up. What a difference a few millimeters makes! The tires (609x40 on the sidewall) measure right at 34mm wide, and they max out at 60 PSI. They provide so much more cushion for the city streets and gravel backroads, and they still feel plenty fast. It's a great tire size. Last week, after about 800 miles on this pair, I finally got my first flat. Upon inspection, I found six tiny thorns in the front tire. Not bad! I had considered a 650b conversion, but with the Road Standard's already low bottom bracket, this probably wasn't going to work out. Plus, that would mean the additional expense of new brake calipers. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: 609mm rims Schwalbe tires from Rivendell
Bruce - that's a great looking build! Good to know that 650b may indeed be an option if I want to go even wider. Which brakes did you use? Any issues with pedal strike? Matt Mike - the tires were available from Rivendell. They are a hearty commuter type tire. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] What should I do with my slightly-too-small bike?
My 59cm Rivendell Road Standard, I have finally decided, is too small for me. It has been a fabulous bike for me; but it is what it is — a road bike, when really, I've wanted a touring bike. Here are some photos, with the newest toward the bottom: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fundenphoto/sets/72157625044930434/ It is currently running Rivendell's 609mm rims, with the (approx. 34mm) Schwalbe tires. I put these on when I discovered the bike wouldn't clear anything wider than a 700x28 tire. I have my eyes on the Velo-Orange Campeur - which I'm thinking I may build up from a frame. Any proceeds from the Riv sale would be funneled toward the VO build. I see my Rivendell options as follows: - Sell the complete bike as it is built. (plus the original 700c wheels) - Cannibalize the parts for the Campeur project; sell the Riv frame. - Hang some or all of it up in the attic. What do you think? Of course, it would be nice to partially fund the next project... but perhaps it would be better to keep the Rivendell? What am I overlooking? http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5302/5704499906_eea2119c83_m.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] What should I do with my slightly-too-small bike?
To be more specific - the fit issue I don't like is the long top-tube. It's 60cm, and even with a short-reach, tall stem, I still feel too stretched out on the bike. Another anomaly with this bike is that I've never been able to locate a serial number. The only thing stamped on the BB shell is Everest - which is apparently just the brand of the BB shell. Thank you all for your comments! The trade option certainly has some appeal. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: What should I do with my slightly-too-small bike?
With everyone's input, I think I will put the Riv back in fighting trim - that is to say, 700c wheels again, no fenders - and keep it as a road bike for now. In the meantime, I'll still be dreaming about touring bikes with short top tubes, and I may pass on my 609 wheels or rims to the next person who'd like to experiment with them. [RBW] Re: Lashing saddlebags to saddles without loops
No sway is encouraging - I may try this! Should I worry about the longevity of the leather straps? How did you manage to keep the straps from sliding down the rails? On Oct 19, 10:43 pm, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote: I got a used Camper today (it's a later one with the drawstring skirt; the quality is not as good as the older ones I remember: thinner canvas, plastic scuff lining instead of leather; but it's still very nice) for the trike on which I run a Turbo and, hating even the VO bolt-on loops, let alone the diabolic Cyclo ones, I decided to try to strap it directly to the rails. It took a bit of twisting and a pair of pliers to pull the second strap tight enough to get the buckle into the second loop, but now the bag's dowel sits tight up against the saddle and, with the strap around the seatpost, there is no sway. Who'd'a' thought? Straps, of course, started with buckles inside and underneath dowel so that other end comes back in on top and cinches with pointy end downward. Would this work on a bicycle? The trike has a very, very short rear-center (the 27X1 1/8 tires overlap the bb shell) so that the stays are more vertical. But I don't see why not. Wisht I had a Hoss but the Camper will do for now. -- Patrick Moore Albuquerque, NM For professional resumes, contact Patrick Moore, ACRWhttp://resumespecialties.com/index.html -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Front Rack ideas
It has been suggested to me to stear clear of the Steco racks, so I will pass that on. Wouldn't want to crush a headtube. If you want the best rack for the heaviest of front loads on a non-cargo bike, you need the WorkCycles frame-fixed 'pickup' front rack. I have one, and it is fantastic. It is rated to 25kg. I have carried at least 60 pounds with it. The fact that it's frame-fixed means the load is much more balanced than a typical fork-fixed front rack. The rack, sans hardware, is also removable. http://www.workcycles.com/home-products/parts-accessories-books/pickup-frame-mounted-front-carrier I got mine from Adeline Adeline in NYC. It's not listed on their site, but you can call them. It was something like $130 shipped. Not the cheapest, but probably the sturdiest front cargo option short of a cycletruck or bakfiets. http://www.adelineadeline.com/ I would be hesitant to install it on something as lovely as a Sam. You may run into interference with the downtube cable bosses. On my Trek, they were not essential, and were removed. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fundenphoto/7578646820/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Trade: my two stems (incl. Nitto Pearl) for your short-ext. Technomic (or similar)?
I have a 9 cm Origin8/Kalloy and a 12 cm Nitto Pearl 11, each with 25.4mm clamp diameters. I'd trade them both for a tall stem with short reach. I'd love a Technomic Standard in the sub-10cm-extension range, but would also consider a Deluxe, Tallux, Dirt Drop, Periscopa, or similar. Not looking for beauties, but I'm doing a complete rebuild, and I think a Nitto something-or-other would be more appropriate than the Origin8. The bars are 25.4, so I could do either clamp diameter. Here are mine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fundenphoto/8513860255/ Also looking for a new set of bar-end shifter pods, or a set of Silvers in nice shape. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
