When properly maintained, a rubber mold can be used for hundreds of
castings. We've had no problem making tread parts for multiple tanks
with a single 8 tread mold.

Regarding set time: It doesn't take long to pour resin into 6-8 molds.
Once you've learned the process (spray, measure, dye, mix, pour, pop)
things go pretty smoothly.

I'm leaning toward molding and casting myself, but I like Franks offer
of "prototype parts for molds". At least I wouldn't need to make my own
molds and I could still play with a Thing-O-Matic.

Now we're talking. John White (KT builder) is ready to crank out dozens
of CAD designs for tank parts. Together, we can form the un-holy
trinity of mold making :-)

My wife's main interest in these trips is go go to new
malls for shopping. We already had the Gettysburg Outlet Mall and a
Chambersburg mall in the GPS for her entertainment. At a recent warship battle
in Statesboro, GA, she was talked into driving a convoy ship around as a
target. She did pretty good with it, but I realized that in 32 years of
marrainge, she had never driven any of my toys. If she was given a
top-of-the-line Tyng or Pittelli tank, she would still rather go to the mall.

Disc golf is like regular ball golf, but with Frisbee
type discs. The courses have 9-18 ~300 ft fairways with tees and "holes", or
baskets with chains. The idea is to shoot into the hole in as few shots as
possible. You can play with Frisbees, but disc golf discs are smaller and go
farther. Discs are cheap, and most courses are free. There are hundreds of
courses around the US and the world. We've played in many states, and were
happy to add PA to our list. See link:

I haven't modified mine at all in the electronics department, but I
want to. I have modified the outside by pulling the ugly bumpers off,
removed the under carriage piece, and removed the outer plastic on the
wheels that is hidden by the tires. To me the tires looked very
unnatural being fully inflated. With the plastic gone, they sag like
all the Hummers I've ever seen. Plus I thought it might give it more
traction. They say that Traxxas titan motors are a direct replacement
for the stock motors so that was what I was looking at along with the
older dual motor ESC. They go fairly cheap. As far as a radio goes,
the cheaper the better :)

Subject: [TANKS] track talk

It’s finally time for me to build the track set I’ve been planning for a long
time. This will replace Bad Kitty’s tracks and be for the upcoming T-72. The
plan is to mount plastic tread pads to the #50 attachment chain I have. All
told, I’ll probably need 250-300 pads in two different widths.

Up to now, I had planned to go the tried-and-true Smooth-On casting method.
I’ve never done any plastic casting, but I understand the process and I know I
can get help from others who have cast their tracks.

Ever since the RoboFest in Linthicum last April, however, I’ve been wondering
if I could produce these things on the Makerbot Thing-O-Matic I saw
demonstrated there. I don’t have any experience with 3d printers or their
products. The Thing-O-Matic uses ABS plastic and produce parts the required
size and thickness. Has anyone ever used one ? Would the parts be strong enough
for tank treads ? Again, they’ll be mounted to roller chain, so they wouldn’t
need to stand up to the stresses of a driven sprocket directly.

Any personal experiences to share ? Thoughts ?

  Thanks,

  Doug

Then pretend that he is Steve Tyng

He'll say: Are you battling?
We'll say: No man,
But you run a battle
When you're in town.

Later on, TRI-PACT will conspire,

have pushed on through and saved the long drive back for Sunday.

Good thing during the long drive back home was plenty of hours to think about
rocket launchers. I thought about the roadblocks to making a working rocket
launcher, broke it down into parts, and worked up multiple ideas to solve each
part. The result is some solid ideas that should work for what I have in
mind. I plan on jotting the ideas down and saving them this winter's building
season. :)

Get some pictures of any antics that happen on Saturday. Snowball Soccer

All (but mostly Frank),
I am officially applying for tank for designation for my new
Pz38(t). Except for minor adjustments like adding a magazine, it is ready for
battle.

New photos and a movie have been uploaded to my PhotoBucket page.
Here's the link:
http://s1089.photobucket.com/albums/i346/Bill_By/?firstLogin=1

Hardware details:
Hull, deck, turret: 3/4" PT pine, 3/8", 1/4" and 1/8" plywood
Motors: 18V DC Drills
Batteries: (3) 6V12A SLA
Motor Controllers (2) Axial AE-1
Tracks: Bicycle Chain, 3/16" rivets, 1/8" Plywood pads
Drive wheel: 4" diameter rubber friction

In almost every function and assembly of this tank, I know that
there are better ways to do it. It is a starting point, and it will get me
onto the battlefield.

Frank,
Please let me know it you need anything else from me.

Subject: [TANKS] MAG Industries : New Apprentice

Memo to all board members MAG Industries.

We have a new apprentice in the shop. Please note a few changes to shop
procedures.

A . Due to the esoteric and highly confidential build materials being used by
the apprentice the following safety guidelines must be adhered to without
exception.
1. Phase 1 - level 1 particle filtration device as shown in picture #1
must be worn at all times.
Also note all manual fresh air ventilators must be
in the full open position. No matter how hot.

Lab coats with proper ID badges must be worn. If
your badge is out of date please
report to security for proper badge reissuance
ceremony . Please note that the Security

department has relocated to it's new building.
Shotzy's Tavern.

Phase 2- This will be discussed when the apprentice makes it to the
next level.

B. Tooling will be upgraded in the shop over the contruction period. It is
highly suggested that any questionable tools

(you know, tools that you have that are cracked, worn out, getting read to
fail, etc.) currently in board members

possession be returned to the main complex in order that the apprentice
can test (ie. finish them off ) them

properly. Yes, the rule of you break it you replace it is still in place.
 See picture #2.

C. Because of the colossal size of the project a minimum of 2 personnel must
be in the facilty. The apprentice and
either a journeyman or a master must be present. Picture #3.
D. WARNING- DO NOT- REPEAT DO NOT discuss any historical data with the
apprentice as this will be a distraction that might cause loss of apprentice
dermal layer or an appendage. Either way our insurance has lapsed since the
Security team seems to have used the last premium payment for a badge reissuing
ceremony.

Please welcome John

(collect all fees prior to each session so we can build up the General, oops
general fund.)

Note: My Panzer II hull is on the other side of John's hull

I was running with my T84 (tier 3 US TD) when I started a game in
Earlinberg(?), the map with the town in the middle and the train depot
to the East side. I had to leave the computer to chase one my kids
while the game was counting down to start and caame back after a
minute or so had already expired in the game. So, as a late arrival to
my team, who was already losing 3-7, I set off and immediatly got hit
taking my life down to 10% or so. I had the 75mm howi as my gun and
promptly one shot killed the other guy. I then snuck up on another
enemy's rear end and one shot killed him. After I rounded a corner I
came face to face with anothe T84 and I got off a quick shot taking
him down to near death. Soon he fired back but some how missed from
only 30 meters or so away. After waiting the 15 seconds or so for the
reload I put a shot in to finnish him off. In the street I saw an SPG
runn for cover behind a building. I followed and shot and killed from
the rear. By this time my team was down to 3 and them to 6. I spoted a
German Bison in a bush at the end of the street and took it to 20%
with one shot, as I waited for the deadly return from the SPG, I saw
the shot fly barely over my head. One more shot put him out and I
pushed north to the capture zone. A PzII was camping in the open
trading shots with a M3 stuart from my team at short distance, so I
killed him with 2 shots to his flanks. Suddenly the M3 blew up as the
last enemy form thier team peaked round the corner and finished off
the Stuart. We were both the last on our teams at this point and I
scored a perfect shot as he tried anothe peek-a-boo shot from around a
building, but his shell went wide. Since my relod time was slower I
hid behind the husk of the dead PzII as this last Pz38t missed me and
instead hit my cover. I swung out and shot his drive sproket and
tracked him in just a shot that left a small portion for me to hit,
but no line of sight for him to get a shot off on me. I waited for the
reload and delivered the death shot to the sitting duck for the win.
That was 7 kills for a Top Gun award as well as Sniper for 12 perfect
shots. Not bad for a tier 3, eh?
In the enemy's defence it was a tier 1,2, and 3 battle with me near
the top of my team's list.
But, going on a 7 kill streak without getting 1 hit between kills is
impressive to myself.

insurance coverage that will cover anyone injured- spectators and combatants-
during battles. Park officials see this insurance as good liability coverage,
but I haven't seen any insurance mentioned for the tank battles.

We have good accessable areas for battles, but they are still within city
boundaries. Paintballs are considered weapons and it may be difficult to get
permission without insurance. Should I consult local insurance companies for

So when is one of our pic guru's going to develop a simple little board that
will drive a reversing relay and provide a PWM signal for an off board SSR?
Just a simple little single channel reversing speed control that the enduser
can scale to whatever amperage level is required by sizing the relays, wire,
and SSR.

That is correct... You still need to use some type of speed control...
However it does provide channel mixing allowing full skid turns. Very
cheap way of getting R/C control Think of it as a version of a 2.4ghz

Here's some static shots from yesterday's event. From left to right,
Cromwell, PzKwII AusfJ, Hetzer and Comet. Not pictured, Frank's Tiger and
Will's SU.

In picture 3 you'll notice Will using a Co2 canister to help cool down one
of Paul's motors. Seemed that when we thought they were set on high speed,
we were incorrect. Paul changed the setting for the second battle and I
noticed some smoke coming from the engine bay. Learned a few valuable
lessons yesterday.

1. Which is the low speed setting on the drill motors.
2. More than enough power on 24 volts at low speed.
3. Bright outer shell on the paintballs is a definite advantage. My order
had a green outer shell, not the orange I had ordered. Could not see a thing
going down range. In the following battles I laced some bright pink and
orange through the supply. Much like tracer rounds. Helped , but just not
what was needed.

4.I definitely like being mobile.

I'll be editing the 1.5 hours of video over the coming days.

All you tanker wannabees can't be living vicariously off us old timers anymore!
For myself, I just go to the battles nowadays to give Will a hard time as he's
continually fixing his tank, enjoy the brotherly camaraderie of the the middle

Hi all,

Just thought you might like a sneak peek at my master track segment, still
needs a little more tidying up then into a mould box to let me cast 230
identical wax copies, to be sent to the foundry for investment casting. The
light pink material is car body filler, a cheat to get some detail I couldn’t
be bothered to do in steel!

I’ve had to modify the design a bit, as a true 1/6 scale was a bit weak in
places, but it still has the scale look. The rectangular pocket on the top is
4mm deep to house a 5mm rubber pad to be bonded in place.

You might look into Dewalt 18v right angle cordless drills... The MAG guys say
they can be over-volted to 24v without too much worry... They are small and
poweful motors plus you can try smaller sized batteries to run them...
Small/light tanks may be the way to go (especially when you get old like me and
have trouble lifting a 120 lbs Brumm)
We should try and get together to show you what we’ve done and give you a
better idea of what it all entails... I live NorthWest and Aaron lives in the

You may find designing your tank a real challenge until you know the
sizes of the parts your going to use :- motors , batteries and the
like .
Remember you dont have to make it radio control if you dont wish to.
nothing wrong with a tank on a wire. very few people do this option
but it would save a whole load of problems .

Welcome Jacob Myself and Cobra are in the Las Vegas area also I have
T012, which M.A.G. (the Pittellis) built and Cobra (Aaron) has T076 which he
and a shop Gnome built.
MINE is battle ready and Cobra is close but he just sold it and has to build
another... (Dumb, I know)...

If you’re interested, let me know and we’ll try to get together... The good
thing about this type of battle hobby is it appeals to all ages (I’m 55, but my
wife would say different) You’ll find that the guys here like to have fun
but are some seriously great builders. Read as much of the site as you can and
you’ll get a feel for it... I’m not a good builder ( I am slowly rebuilding a
21st Century Humvee for a supply vehicle and have a Plastic Panzer’s roto
molded Grant/Lee waiting to go on the bench next) but I have had the pleasure
of doing a couple battles back East that you’ll see in archived battle
reports... The Brits have been very busy the past couple years and we may have
to worry about them invading...

would it be possible to make one rear wheel powered and the other with some
sort of friction drive?

what i am thinking is, have the motor power one wheel's axle directly, but
put a break between it and the other wheel axle. at the break put a disc on one
side (maybe wood) and a disc on the other side (wood with leather?). they would
make contact with one another, not forcefully, but maybe enough to give the
other wheel some power when going straight and when you make a turn, it'll
allow for slippage - sort of like a poor mans clutch?

Aaron,

Nice work on the turret but if it's not to late you should really
consider making the entire turret cover easily removable. It would
greatly ease the installation of your turret internals and any future
maintenance that will be required.

Check out my turret vids for an example.

the central knuckle is hard mounted to the hull (stationary), tho I
suppose one might acctualy gain more travel and overall track to
ground coverage if it did indeed pivot. the pvc pipes on top are
purely cosmetic to simulate the gas strut of the vvss. The spring is
soft enough to compress by hand, tho I don't yet know if it would be
sufficient to acctualy suspend the completed tank.

RE:Clarification
1) regarding the annexation of Massachusetts: I've lived in Florida
for 8 years now, but I still fondly recall another saying that was
frequently used in in my former state of residence that would start
near the end of basketball season:
"YANKEES SUCK!!"
2) regarding the spelling of color/colour, I would repectfully point
out that both spellings are wrong because of the improper use of the
letter "R". Anyone from the original 13 states should know we export
our "R"s to Canada where they are remanufactured into "A"s. And FYI: I
don't pak the caa in havad yad anymore.
3) Try a zebra cammo scheme, aka "disruptive" or "jazz". Not very
authentic but might work since we will all struggle with reltively
small moving targets at didstance and be using optical tracking (i.e.
mk 1 eyeball).

Okay. We need some clarification folks.

1. Unless I'm mistaken ,I believe that the residents of the fair state
of Massachusetts stopped spelling the word colors as colours,3 years
after Yorktowne.( I looked this up on Wikipedia-big smile)
2.So, Monsieur Patron. Are you preparing for the annexation of
Massachusetts to the UK?
3. Which color do you feel will give me an edge over the other thumb
sucking, er , I mean thumb using battlers?

A Ferret (or similar) turret isn't very big- it's really just a helmet
with good PR- and
I can't see how you'd get a paintball marker into a 1/6th one.

I suppose one might fit something like a water-cannon or airball gun
and specify that it could only damage infantry or softskin tagets, but
it's probably better to model a HMMWV with a TOW launcher or similar
that can take out those pesky tanks.

I have had the most amazing idea today. This is aimed at all nations
not just the UK.
I wish to start a new hobby , just like this hobby of Franks
( following most of Franks rules ) ,only the tanks aren’t rc , you
build your tank and sit in it ,driving it about the battlefield
yourself , this new hobby can still have SV`s and FA just like Franks
hobby.
I think this larger scale hobby will be of more interest to different
groups like 4wd off road clubs and such, clubs that are full of
mechanics and engineers. Taking away the rc element will make the
hobby less geeky and more `fun` . I hope nobody is too offended by my
comments here , I don’t wish to offend.
I have no wish to enforce any sort of rules like `it has to be to
scale` or it has to be modelled on a real and produced vehicle. I want
anyone to build any design or size of tank / asset they wish. Its just
got to be able to drive the occupant(s) over the battle field and fire
one paintball at a time.
With the obvious exception regarding the use of internal combustion
engines ,all other rc tank combat rules can apply for me.
These tanks could even be battled on standard paintball sites against
standard paintballers , if a number of small targets are positioned
around the tank that all have to be hit before the tank can be clamed
`out` the possibilities are vast.
I expect some new rules will have to be dreamed up to cover safety .
These vehicles can be driven onto low level trailers or even onto
pickup trucks and driven to battle fields when and where ever
possible.

So guys what does anybody think ? Im gonna start one anyway .

Rick,
Contact MAG Industries c/o Tri-Pact Foundry Inc. They have
successfully built and battled, Tiger I, Panzer IV, KV-1, Comet,
Navarone 16" Naval Gun, Pak 40 Anti-tank gun, and a 155mm howitzer. In
conjuction with Tyng Industries, built the Goer supply vehicle.
Current project is a commissioned (cash payment) vehicle for the
Alliance of Las Vegas. The Brummbar will include the most up to date
(guinea pig) systems to be used in our hobby.
So, pick a vehicle, decide what esoteric components you would like
to have,re: smoke generator, laser sight, remote video cam for
realistic fog of war battling, or low friction paint to reduce ball
breakage. MAG Industries will then price your special vehicle.
Production will commence upon receipt of the non-refundable 50%
deposit. For an extra fee the vehicle will be delivered to your
doorstep, along with a tech to walk you through the basic operations.
No warranties or guarantees are implied or given due to the fact that
MAG Industries just does not do dat.
Hope this helps. By the way, I am totally affiliated with the
above organization and would have a vested interest in any and all
financial transactions . LOL. Welcome to the group.
