Re: [RE-wrenches] low head/low cost solar pump
Mac, you need to be more specific about your needs and budget. Is a Shurflo 9300 too expensive at $800+? It can be set up to run on a single 12V module at about 1/2 gpm, all day; at 1/2-speed it'll go for about 3 years before needing parts replaced. Is the smallest Sunrotor too expensive? What's the application? Could a Dankoff Slowpump be hung in a dug well? One of those will last for years or decades if the filters are kept clean, and can run on as little as 25 watts of PV. Water pumping is the most application-specific use of solar that I know. The answer is always "It depends". And you haven't given us enough information to help you. Richard was one of the early pioneers who brought Renewable Energy awareness and installations into the public mind I would call him my friend, one of my early mentors and a constant source of inspiration and guidance whenever I had some design questions that I needed feedback with. He knew how to play and be resourceful and innovative. He was a natural teacher and we co-taught together many Solar Design and Installation courses for Solar Energy International. Richard has left behind a rich legacy of installs and many talented installers and designers who gained their beginnings in this field under Richards mentoring. He will be much missed by those who knew him, worked with him and got their start under his guidance. Re: [RE-wrenches] low head/low cost solar pump
Mac, That helps. My best suggestion would be a Dankoff Solar Slowpump. The SunCentric solar centrifugal would be ideal if the volume of water desired was greater. Mount the pump close to and above the highest pond surface level, and use the optional 30" filter and foot valve package. Pick a model and module size to match his desired GPD. You can add an LCB but it's not necessary, given the current low cost of just oversizing the module. Specs on the Slowpump are at http://dankoff-pumps.com/dp/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/slowpump1129.pdf, or via http://dankoff-pumps.com/dp/?page_id=6. This pump is for summer use only, as it's not freeze-tolerant. Simple, long-lasting, reliable, rebuildable, domestic, proven. Re: [RE-wrenches] low head/low cost solar pump
Mac, The cheapest pump to do this job is the LVM Amazon, which is made in England, will pump 3 or 4 GPM at 10 feet of head and costs around $70. They are made to run on a 12 volt battery and cannot handle more than 14 volts, so a small battery and controller are required. You can use a low cost regulator and a relay powered by the module to only run the pump when the sun is shining. If you use a Surflo 2088, use the 24 volt version with a nominal 12 volt 36 cell module array direct. This way the pump never sees too high of a voltage. It will operate at 17 to 18 volts, pump slightly less then spec says at 24 volt, but since it is positive displacement it will pump fine at the low voltage. Re: [RE-wrenches] low head/low cost solar pump
Dave and Mac, The 2088 would certainly work as well if the desired flow is low enough. They are rated 2.8 gpm at open discharge, but that goes down quickly to under 2 gpm at pressure. Your app is close to open discharge, but running 12V array direct would likely reduce output to (17/26 X 2.8 =) about 1.8 gpm max. Is that enough? Certainly cheaper; while designed for intermittent duty as a pressurizing pump, it would certainly last longer at lower voltage and speed. I have never tried running one all day, to know how long it would last. It's somewhat rebuildable (order a "diaphragm/drive kit" and a "valve kit" for the owner if you go this route; replacement motors aren't available). Cheap enough, too, to be considered disposable; just not my preferred route to advise a customer. Re: [RE-wrenches] low head/low cost solar pump
Jay, I wouldn't. Years ago Windy offered a line of Rule bilge pump kits with modules for array-direct fountain and landscaping apps. He called it the SunDeLight, in Windy's typically cute naming fashion. We sold a few. He gave up after a few years. The pumps are mostly plastic and designed for intermittent duty (it's a bilge pump, not a sinking ship pump). In the continuous operation of array-direct use, too many of them wore out before the two-year warranty was up. [RE-wrenches] Adding acid to a battery
A client purchased a set of batteries (not from me) and purchased BOS from me. The batteries are a double walled type and it appears that one must have fallen over during shipment or was improperly filled at the factory and some of the electrolyte leaked into the space between inner and outer wall. The only solution was to remove the inner battery cells and dump the acid from the case. A small amount (about a quart) of acid was replaced (1.26 s.g. automotive battery acid) and then topped up with distilled water. The battery performs fine but one cell appears to have a lower overall s.g. than the rest (1.45 vs. 1.65) . This has shown up over time. Question: has anyone added acid to a battery to raise the s.g. Is this an acceptable option or totally off the wall. These batteries still appear to have full capacity and to replace the single problem battery will be very expensive. Re: [RE-wrenches] Adding acid to a battery
Hi Ron, In this case you may need to but ONLY if you are sure the battery has been equalized to bring up the low cell. If the SG is rising during equalization, keep going. From your statement over time, it may just be that this cell has been neglected. The method would be to add electrolyte instead of water when the level gets low. With the battery fully charged (important), add a small amount and mix well with a bulb type battery filler. Test the SG. Repeat until you are getting the result. Equalize and test again. Re: [RE-wrenches] Community says farewell to solar pioneer Gottlieb - Brattleboro Reformer
Hi Dear Friends, I will always remember Richard with such warmth and laughter. He and I had many a laugh together - a true fellow playful spirit - an elf of sorts and one of the original solar elders - a true pioneer and groundbreaker. I am sad I won't see him again in this life on one of my trips back East. Richard devoted many hours and many years to going out of his way to help others - He was instrumental in NESEA (Northeast Solar Energy Association) and SEBANE - (Solar Energy Business Association of New England) where he served on the Board for many years. He brought such cheer and good energy to those organization - and touched deeply everyone he worked with. Richard and I worked on a few projects together - and I always looked forward to being with him. He was a true Brother. Richard was truly a great human being - he gave so much love and good humor - while also serving the solar field tirelessly. Hats off and a deep bow to you Richard Gottlieb! Re: [RE-wrenches] Slowpump
On 2/24/2012 5:18 PM, jay peltz wrote: Hi Allan, Do I misunderstand you below that you are saying you don't need a LCB with a slow pump? Thanks, jay Jay, The answer turns out to be "definitely maybe". The Slowpump spec sheet says: "A linear current booster (controller) is required to start and run in low light." The manual says: "When working against a constant head (vertical lift) Solar Slowpump requires nearly constant current, regardless of the voltage/speed. When low light conditions are present, the PV array cannot supply full current. The voltage will drop to nearly zero, and the pump will stall (like a truck trying to start in 4th gear). The remedy is either to add a PUMP CONTROLLER, also called LINEAR CURRENT BOOSTER (LCB) to your system. This device will match the power source to the load by transforming the voltage down while increasing the current delivered to the motor (like an automatic transmission). If you are not using a controller in your non-battery system, contact your dealer. It will greatly improve low-light performance." See the last sentence. So, unsure about this, I called Windy. Here's what he said: "IF the motor is being used near its capacity, AND the pump stalls due to an unrelated obstacle (not just low-light stalling), AND the fuse is NOT sized just above the normal amp draw of the motor (say a 7A fuse on a 5A draw on a motor capable of pulling 20A) THEN the motor windings could overheat before the thermal switch could trip, and destroy the motor. So it's unlikely but possible, and probably a good idea. And it certainly lengthens the pumping day. Re: [RE-wrenches] Adding acid to a battery
Ron, It is reasonable to refill with acid for the purpose of replacing acid lost in a spill. In fact that's what should be done. The manufacturer will probably be able to tell you how much is necessary. If water has already been used, the specific gravity will be low and it'll be necessary to equalize the battery until there is enough room for the replacement acid. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be done in one step. Since there was acid between the inner and outer case originally, I'd inspect carefully to make sure it is not filled with acid again.
