Hi Jay,

We use a Makita BFL300F "nut runner". They are expensive and hard to find,
but a great tool for torquing down top clamps. It is nice and long for
reaching over modules. We got ours from EF Bailey.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks but yikes, if I got it right its around $700.

I think I'd have to install a lot of modules to make that pay for itself.

Hi Ryan

There are some very experienced solar professionals in Colombia that also
do wind and hydro (assessments, designs, installations and service). You
can get assistance from them that is up to date and knowledgeable about
local conditions. Several work the entire country and I can make few
introductions if you contact me off line at st...@self.org

[RE-wrenches] Standing Seam Clamp for 1" wide seam?

2012-08-08 Thread James Reismiller
Hi Folks,

Does anyone know of an S-5 or similar non-penetrating metal roofing clamp
that will attach to a 1” wide standing seam? We normally use S-5-S, but
these only accommodate ½” wide seams.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Standing Seam Clamp for 1" wide seam?

2012-08-08 Thread toddcory
i don't know if this will work for you, but i had a job a few years back with wider than standard seams. i contacted the mfgr and they said it was ok to crush the seam under the proposed s5 location with channel locks.

granted, these seams were just over the 1/2" width and tapered/opened wider as the seam went top to bottom, so most of the crushing happened towards the pan. as i torqued them i had to apply pressure from the top to prevent them from moving up to the narrower part (top) of the seam. in the end, it all worked fine.

2012-08-08 Thread Brian Teitelbaum
Hi James,

The SnapNrack Wide Seam Clamp will work with seams up to 0.82" wide. Will that
work?

The SnapNrack folks say that a 1" seam will fit into the clamp, but the cam
won't tighten down properly. I don't know if this drawing will make it through
here, but here goes:

Re: [RE-wrenches] Metal Shingles

2012-08-08 Thread Solarguy
Corey

We installed a 3.6 kW array on a very similar roof in 2006. The roof was new
at that time and the roofer required us to hire his crew to put holes into
the approx. 24x36 inch stamped steel panels. We used lags but no flashing.

http://ntrei.com/images/Slide15.pdf is a close up of the painted & sand
coated steel panels.

Our penetrations never leaked but earlier this year the roof began to leak
in a number of places. Turns out the roofers did not follow the installation
instructions properly. The customer now has traditional standing seam panels
but has not managed to get a dime out of the roofer in reparation. The brand
was Decra.

Good luck

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Metal Shingles

I did a site survey today for a customer who has metal shingle roofing. The
shingles are made from a thin-gauge metal and are stamped to look like cedar
shakes. The homeowner was unsure about the manufacturer - they appear
similar to Future Roof or EDCO ArrowLine.

I am wondering about:

1) attachment solutions - flashed products (QuickMount PV) do not seem to be
an option.

2) installation methods - the shingles dent easily and permanently under
pressure, so we will want to contact the roof as minimally as possible.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Metal Shingles (Corey Shalanski)

2012-08-08 Thread Jeffrey Spies
Corey,

Quick Mount PV flashed mounts do indeed work with the various stone coated
metal panels made by companies like Decra or Metro. The mount we use for
these roof sytems would be our QBase with standoff post and the flashing(s)
would be the same ones used in our Universal Tile Mount. The length of the
post may vary based on the roofing panel and the batten structure under the
panel.

We recently documented the installation procedure for a Decra panel used on
a single batten roof system. Marshall Green is our trainer that is most
familiar with the installation process and I would be happy to connect you
with him to discuss the proper installation. The process will vary
depending on which model of stone coated metal panel your customer is using.
There are many configurations of batten or battenless systems that might be
used and also the contour of the stone coated metal panel will influence the
installation procedure.

The process has many similarities to tile installation, but might
necessitate finding additional stone coated metal panels that match the ones
currently used on the roof. It is also likely that you would need a hand
brake ($200-300 tool) to bend a 90 degree lip on the upper side of the
flashing to get the desired waterproofing configuration.

Feel free to email me at j...@quickmountpv.com or call me at 480-650-9345
for additional information.
