Re: [RE-wrenches] Murphy Gen Control Oopsies

2012-08-13 Thread Chris Mason
Silly question, but have you talked to the manufacturer?
http://www.fwmurphy.com/
I can't see how it would be an off-grid issue. The voltage on the solenoids
can only be 12V, so it's not an overvoltage issue.
If the controllers were faulty in the way you detail, that would be
happening with every genset, regardless of use.
Also, you should be able to track the operation to see if the pull-in coil
is remaining energized.
It could be that they are specifying lousy solenoids, can you spec a
different manufacturer?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase M210-84-208-S12 Inverters Available?

2012-08-13 Thread Dave Click

Enphase already positive-grounds the module:

http://enphase.com/support/installation-wiring/
Q: The Enphase Microinverter manual states that the device is positively
grounded. Don't most PV modules have negative grounds? Is this a problem
for Enphase?
A: Enphase made the decision to positively ground its microinverters to
minimize corrosion. Because Enphase Microinverters are positively
grounded, they are compatible with both positively and negatively
grounded modules.

Can Enphase inverters be positively grounded? I wasn't aware that they
could. Otherwise you have an equipment mismatch problem that can't be
overcome under the listing of the modules and the inverters.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Thermal storage water stabilizer

2012-08-13 Thread Will White
Nathan,

We've done a couple of systems with large unpressurized tanks (STSS). They
work well but there are a couple of things you need to pay attention to. We
use tap water to fill the tank which works fine but you have to make sure the
PH of the water is in the correct range. I can't remember what that is off
hand but the STSS manual has a whole section on correct PH and want to add (I
think it's baking soda) to correct the PH. The second tip is make sure all the
ports and the lid are properly sealed with calk. The STSS tanks come with the
calk, I'm not sure if other brands include it. If you don't seal all the
openings well when the tank heats up and produces condensation that water will
leak out the ports and create a mess and reduce the efficiency of the
insulation.

We used to make our own heat exchangers with K soft copper and trex to hold it
all together. That worked well on most systems but we had one where the copper
eroded where it was in contact with the trex. We think it was due to improper
PH of the water in the tank. I'd recommend buying the heat exchangers from the
manufacture.

Good luck,
Will

Thermal wrenches,

I have a series of upcoming projects involving large (up to 10,000 gallon)
water storage. They are closed (air-tight) but unpressurized (oversized
expansion capability) systems, basically just a mass of water. We move heat in
(solar, masonry heater) and out (DHW, space heating) exclusively via heat
exchangers, so once we seal up the lid there is no introduction of any new
material, including air, until bladder replacement or other maintenance,
hopefully a long time off.

Obviously de-ionized water would be the best choice for initial fill, but it is
not going to happen. My thought is that with no new source of oxygen, minerals,
etc., the small amounts that will be present on fill up can't pose a big
problem.

Anyone with experience here? Any ideas or leads for a stabilizer to add on
initial fill? What problems am I not seeing?

Many thanks,
-Nathan

I've wondered about this as well with our unpressurized drainback systems. My
HVAC supplier had told me that once you heat the water above 165 or so, that
you basically have distilled it. Not sure. I thought you would need to boil it.
Though we have had no issues with corrosion as we have had some tanks in the

Maybe use 24 or 22ga stainless than can be bent to form an angle? ask client to
cover material cost as that is "custom" work beyond typical scope of build.

We have used Seltrol 112 as an inhibitor in large unpressurized drainback
systems based on a recommendation from Holocene.

I have previously worked on large unpressurized systems from other
installers and not seen any issues with their tap water-only systems
(though I have seen multiple issues with tank corrosion due to incorrect
tank material specification).

Re: [RE-wrenches] Thermal storage water stabilizer

2012-08-13 Thread Jeff Yago
Distilled water is distilled water, not hot water. Distilled water comes
from water boiled into a gas, then the gas is distilled by passing through a
cooling coil or heat exchanger, and when this gas turns back to a liquid it
is distilled water.

Commercial water distilling systems use either glass or stainless steel
piping because pure distilled water is very "corrosive" to many piping
materials. If I leave several plastic gallons of distilled water around for
long periods they usually start to leak out. Not sure if that is eating a
hole in the plastic or cheap plastic, but you will not get distilled water
by just heating, it must turn to dry steam (gas) first.

I have put expanding foam inside the ends to prevent insects. As for the
finished look... never had the problem. We just do a clean cut with a sharp
blade and keep the length outside the module to a minimum.

2012-08-13 Thread Nick Soleil
HI Dave,

You are correct. The Enphase Microinverters bond the DC positive to ground.

This is not an issue. Most modules will operate normally with either; no
ground bond, the DC negative bonded, or the DC positive bonded.

SunPower modules are the exception, with a requirement for being positively
grounded.

We have used Seltrol 112 as an inhibitor in large unpressurized drainback
systems based on a recommendation from Holocene.

I have previously worked on large unpressurized systems from other installers
and not seen any issues with their tap water-only systems (though I have seen
multiple issues with tank corrosion due to incorrect tank material
specification).

Re: [RE-wrenches] Murphy Gen Control Oopsies

2012-08-13 Thread dan
Turns out to be a grounding issue.. the solenoid uses a common ground wire for suck in and run. It also shares a circuit with the starter solenoid. so when it sees no/ bad ground, the next best path is thru the starter solenoid.. which can energize the start circuit (sorta). They told us similar stories in E3. i.e. houses can do the same kinda thing when the ground / neutral gets disturbed..   been known to cause fires in an adjacent house with no power (No meter). Thanks Guys. dbDan BrownFoxfire Energy Corp.Renewable Energy Systems(802)-483-2564www.Foxfire-Energy.comNABCEP #092907-44

Anyone else having issues with Murphy Controls and Off Grid Systems? I have two installs w/ GPP Isuzu diesels on Mecca Alti Gen sets built by Mack Boring and Parts as primary power units. one is a 12K unit, the other a 20. both use Murphy controls, and both are toasting their fuel solenoid at random. the smaller one (Customer purchased/ we installed to back up an OB 7224 system). it's been in for a few years, but spits it's fuel solenoid twice a year like clock work (the first two times it took out the starter as well.. we think something caused the starter to suck in while running ). the second one (the 20K), has only been in since last fall and just spit the same solenoid for the first time. this one is backing up an OB14,400 system. Both use make or break (dry) contact for gen run, and both use OB AGS from the Master. Since Sandy left Mack Boring I can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone.. (other than they're very sorry, the gensets are out of warranty). I can almost see messing up one somehow.. but both? apparently the solenoids use two coils -- one to suck in, the other to hold. Sandy was thinking something was causing the suck in coil to overwork which made the thing over heat and  fail.  I have dozens of other off grid systems with generator back up of one flavor or other and have never seen this kind of problem with any of them. I'm stumped. Suggestions? Thanks dbDan BrownFoxfire Energy Corp.Renewable Energy Systems(802)-483-2564www.Foxfire-Energy.comNABCEP #092907-44 ___

Re: [RE-wrenches] Unirac SolarMount rail caps

2012-08-13 Thread Howie Michaelson
Haven't looked at how different the profiles are, but IronRidge's light rail
is fairly similar and they make black plastic end caps that you might be able
to make work...
