Re: [RE-wrenches] Outback Optics weird behavior

2017-06-27 Thread Ron Young
Looks good on mine William, firmware is 3.15.1 but probably out of date. The
Gateway is Offline and so it’s probably not valid indication anyway. I’ve given
up on OpticsRE. I’ve spent so much time updating firmware and trying to debug
issues that it makes no sense to spend any more time on it.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Off Grid Refrigeration

2017-06-27 Thread Dana
I use & recommend an Energy Star Refers & do the math: A 512 Kwhr per year
REF / 365 = 1402 Kwhr/ day x 1.25 = 1753 Kwhrs/ day

However, todays refrigerators are only rated at a 10-year working life. Our
last one crashed at 8 years. $2000/8 = $250/ year for cool food. Pretty bad
track record for cold whatever.

Hello Wrenches,

What is your preferred refrigerator for off grid installations? We are
looking for a medium sized, commercially available unit that won't break the
bank. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Watch out for glow bars on propane ranges! Your local Lowes or Home Depot
will not know what you are talking about, and I've had them mess up and
deliver the wrong model a couple times. There are only a few brands that

2017-06-27 Thread Chris Mason
I've done a lot of 12V refrigeration work for boats, these systems are
small, efficient, cheap and basically unbreakable. they come in 24V so if
you can use the sizes, you can put something together very easily. the
Danfoss hermetically sealed compressors are bullet proof and very very
efficient. Let me know if you need more info.

[RE-wrenches] Outback Optics weird behavior

2017-06-27 Thread William Miller
Friends:

I have noticed something strange in Outback Optics. On my systems, the
setup has lost information about the model number of all inverters.
Outback tech support has been stripped of many access privileges so they
can’t help me trouble shoot this.

I am asking if anyone of you with Optics systems if you can check to see if
your inverters have a model number set in the device registration screen.
This is accessed by clicking device map and then clicking on any inverter
icon.

Your feedback will be most helpful, and if you have this problem, you will
want to know.

I have attached a screen shot of the pop-up showing the problem. Scroll to
the bottom of this message for the link.

Thanks in advance,

William Miller

Hi Drake

Probably the biggest development in off grid solar refrigeration is the
growing use of battery free solar direct drive (SDD) fridges and freezers.
These are now in widespread use by the global immunization community for
vaccine refrigeration and some ice pack freezing. It is believed there are
over 10,000 already deployed with many more planned in the next few years.

There are 7 manufacturers around the globe that have earned WHO
"pre-qualification" after passing stringent testing focused on conserving
vaccine. Some also offer SDD for other uses. To see who they are go the
WHO website and see their catalog with approved fridges and freezers at
http://apps.who.int/immunization_standards/vaccine_quality/pqs_catalogue/

Best wishes

Re: [RE-wrenches] Rodent bird guard question

2017-06-27 Thread Benn Kilburn
Tom,
I commented on a few different products on a thread with a similar subject line
as this one, none of which would impede airflow significantly, IMO.
However they will require maintenance similar to cleaning out your
gutters/eavestroughs as wind-blown debris gets trapped along the upper rows.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Off Grid Refrigeration

2017-06-27 Thread Starlight Solar Power Systems
Hey Drake,

Because of the very low cost of producing power by PV solar, I always recommend
a standard, high efficiency refrigerator. It doesn’t makes sense to by
speciality refrigerators that cost 2-4 times times the price of ‘off the shelf”
brands. Many brands have models that use about 1 kWh per day. That means you
can make the power it takes to operate it for under $500.

Look here at kWh/Year:
