Friends:

I had a similar experience with Trojan vented L-16s about two years ago: all of
a sudden the product would not perform as it used to. A vendor let slip that
plate chemistry had been modified. I was later told that charge voltages needed
to be higher than ever recommended previously-voltages difficult to achieve
off-grid. This product degradation has been discussed here. Likewise it was
helpful to corroborate experiences. Thanks, everyone!

Same here! We use mostly SunExtender and have had the same issue. As far as I
know, they are the same battery with different labels. I have had some success
in being a LOT more aggressive with voltages & times and sometimes going above
FLA settings to get banks to recover and perform closer to spec. Makes me
nervous though, since more than 50% of a customer’s investment can just
vaporize with what one thought was appropriate charge settings. I suggest EQ as
the new norm for AGMs, especially in grid-tied-battery-backup cases and where
off-grid use does not give adequate absorb time.

The MidNite Chinook 200 is 100% isolated from ground and therefore would

It has no up tower electronics other than a rectifier. These are

Re: [RE-wrenches] Concorde Lifeline Battery failures

2018-01-19 Thread Chris Worcester
Hi fellow Wrenches,

I had to ask this question a few times about the difference between the
Lifeline GPL-L16T and SunXtender PVX4050HT batteries from Concorde with our
sales rep before I received a quasi-answer;

The lifeline batteries are for RV and MARINE applications

Constant cycling up down

KEEP in mind they are both 400 amp 6 volt batteries

The sunxtender will do the same cycle capability

The difference is (let’s say in the cake mix ) the paste in the plates as the
sunxtenser are on float charge all the time

They tend to hold up longer in solar applications

I really think you should stick with the sunxtender as you are in the solar
business

There was no price difference, just stocking differences at the time, so we
ordered the Lifelines for that last job.

We haven’t had any of the SunXtenders or the Lifelines fail yet, and our oldest
SunXtender out there is a 2002 battery, still going!

Re: [RE-wrenches] automatic transfer switch

2018-01-19 Thread jay
HI Dave and Chris,

Good points, however.

I’ve had radian board failures which shut it all down. You are correct if a
power module goes down then it will still continue working.

This project doesn’t need telecomm redundancy but close.
And if the inverter shuts down then the AGS won’t start.

So yea maybe a bit overkill but its a long long ways to go for a site visit.

And again,
50 amps max ( 30 really) and would be good to have built in mechanical bypass.
Nema 1

thanks,

jay

We are looking at Fronius Symo  24.0-3 480 for a 120KW rooftop project but I am
having problems identifying a 1,000V fused disco combiner for the six strings.
I'm looking for suggestions for suitable products.

[RE-wrenches] Concorde Lifeline Battery failures

2018-01-19 Thread Starlight Solar Power Systems
Drake,

We have at least a dozen systems that failed early from lost capacity over the
last 2 years with 2-4 year old battery banks. The AGM failures are all Lifeline
battery made by Concorde.

Lifeline and my distributor both told me I was “the only one” with failures. I
dropped Lifeline battery after being a dealer for 16 years and many hundreds of
systems installed. Historically we had seen 7-10 years average life from
battery banks that we installed. One regular customer is at 12 years and still
going. I have a sense of vindication now hearing from others about Concorde
capacity issues.

Thank you,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Schneider 600volt Charge Controller

2018-01-19 Thread Dave Angelini Offgrid Solar
Probably the first firmware change and they knew it was coming. Just a
guess. They have been bullet proof except the addition of Combox made them
susceptible to an issue that was fixed in the combox. Anyone with combox
should do the update as it really can make the system recover from issues
such as grid/generator glitches into xanbus.

Of the ten or so I've put in, only one failure so far, and Schneider was
QUICK to replace it with little question (leaving me with a faint
impression there was an issue they identified, but didn't want to fess up

I think so also for the same reason Chris! So I guess I don't understand
why you need the external transfer switch Jay?
Is not the internal radian transfer switch the less is more for offgrid?

Re: [RE-wrenches] 1,000V combiners

2018-01-19 Thread Sam Haraldson
Chris,

Although we've primarily used it only for fusing strings and not for
combining strings OnSite Energy has had success with the Midnite Solar
MNPV10 1000V. Our electricians liked the size and weight of the box and if
you're already familiar with Midnite combiners such as the PV6 it's very
straightforward. You state you're looking for a "fused disco combiner"
however so perhaps you need something more robust than the touch-safe
disconnect aspect? If so this product is obviously not for you, but I
thought I'd suggest it in case it's useful.

Take care,
Sam

Re: [RE-wrenches] 1,000V combiners

2018-01-19 Thread August Goers
Chris -

Two ideas: One, call Fronius to see what they recommend. We haven't used
this particular inverter, but we've used lots of the smaller Symos and
Pirmos and with some of them you can fit fuse holders right in the wire box
onto a din rail. Otherwise, I've had good results working with SolarBOS.

Hi Jay,

I've been using the ASCO Series 185 for years with the Radian, single or
dual. With some fine tuning I've gotten the transfer time down to around 1
second. The have a manual switch built inside of it. They also offer a
service rated (with CB) or not. Zero failures to date.

Re: [RE-wrenches] automatic transfer switch

2018-01-19 Thread Chris Mason
I think Radians are redundant anyway, if you parallel the output they will
keep going when one fails. Also, the 8KW are two x 4KW modules, both can
function independently. I know this because we lost one at home and kept
going until a replacement arrived.

[RE-wrenches] 1,000V combiners

2018-01-19 Thread Chris Mason
We are looking at Fronius Symo 24.0-3 480 for a 120KW rooftop project but
I am having problems identifying a 1,000V fused disco combiner for the six
strings. I'm looking for suggestions for suitable products.
