Re: [RE-wrenches] Radian Generator Relay

2021-09-14 Thread Kent

William,

Years ago we tried using the relay in the FNDC with a system of sealed
Outback FX inverters.  After a few times call backs about the generator
being left running long after it should have stopped, I discovered that
the problem was indeed caused by the relay in the FNDC. That relay is a
latching type and Outback sends the signal for it to change state only
once; they don't check to see if it actually changed state (apparently
the hardware wasn't set up to allow that); and they don't send a second
signal to improve the chance of a successful operation. You know the
screen in the Mate where they keep a tally of communication errors, not
sure that is comm errors at unfortunate times are the cause or not, but
I suspect it is. Maybe the relay in this FNDC was sluggish because in
the garage temperatures could occasionally got lower than 0°C - the
lower limit of the FNDC. Whatever the cause, we decided that the FNDC
relay was not suitable for starting and stopping a generator. I ended up
re-purposing the FX's external vent fan to control the generator (and
fan) and never had any more trouble. The fan is rarely needed except
while charging batteries with the generator, and the inverter has the
ability to reduce its output if it is too hot.

Actually I’m using the 12V relay to activate a battery vent fan. For
generator starting, I’m using the dry contact relay for two-wire
start. I have the circuit protected by a 2amp fast acting fuse. Fuse
is good.

Hi Michael

It sound like you are using the 12 volt aux out on the radian to
activate a separate relay.

If so disconnect the relay then check and see if the 12 aux attempts
to go high (12v dc).

If it does it may be a relay issue.

The Radian does have an on board relay you could use that instead of a
discrete relay.

In AGS on the Mate3(s) just select Relay.

I hope this helps sir.

Wrenches,

I’ve got a Radian 8048/Mate 3S that no longer is activating the relay
responsible for generator starting. I’ve power cycled everything and
updated firmware. When I attempt to start the generator via the Mate
3S, the relay does not close.

Any suggestions before I look into replacing the relay/board?

Which board do I order and what is the best source?

Many thanks,

Michael

2021-09-14 Thread jay
HI Michael,

It was for 2 reasons. If both relays are bad then yes the board needs
replacing.

But also its easy to work in the radian to add a 12v relay cube to give you the
dry contact you need.

Vs going into the back of the FNDC. And I don’t know what anyone else has
heard but OB tech support told me years ago not to use the FNDC relay for AGS.
I had been using it for AGS and was having some intermittent issues. Changed it
to the inverter and didn’t have any more issues.

Here is the relay that you need to make it dry contact.
https://www.allelectronics.com/item/rly-351/12vdc-spdt-40a-automotive-relay/1.html
the wiring socket is on the same page.

I prefer using this method as this relay is really cheap and easy to replace
and very reliable.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Radian Generator Relay

2021-09-14 Thread Tuss, Lones
Hi Michael
This is where a direct conversation is good I tried to call but could not
connect.
I thought you were using the AGS program on the Mate3S.
If you are in the set up in the AGS you can point it at the
Radian relay
Or the
Radian 12 volt aux
If you want you can also point it to the port containing the FNDC
Of course you will have to wire it to the proper source

When your customer want to start the gen
Press the Gen button on the Mate3S
select ON
The FNDC rely will close and the gen should start
Select Off
The relay will open
Gen should stop
Select Auto
And the preset run conditions in the AGS will be valid.
I hope this helps.
Take Care

I think I see where you are going. If the 12V relay isn’t working also, then

I did look into using the FNDC relay, however it appears that it’s control is
through the FNDC menu. Things are so simple when all my client has to do to
control the generator is push the GEN button and choose a mode. Searching for
the FNDC menu adds a layer of complexity.
However,
What I’m seeing is that the board that the relay is on is part of a stack
boards that costs 2K. So, it sounds like my options are to check to see if the
12v relay functions and then use that to drive a relay, or use the FNDC relay,
or spend 2k for the board stack.

Any way you can just use the relay in the Flexnet or maybe there isn’t one
installed on that system?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Radian Generator Relay

2021-09-14 Thread Tuss, Lones
Hi Michael
It sound like you are using the 12 volt aux out on the radian to activate a
separate relay.
If so disconnect the relay then check and see if the 12 aux attempts to go high
(12v dc).
If it does it may be a relay issue.
The Radian does have an on board relay you could use that instead of a discrete
relay.
In AGS on the Mate3(s) just select Relay.
I hope this helps sir.

Wrenches,

I’ve got a Radian 8048/Mate 3S that no longer is activating the relay
responsible for generator starting. I’ve power cycled everything and updated
firmware. When I attempt to start the generator via the Mate 3S, the relay does
not close.

Any suggestions before I look into replacing the relay/board?

Which board do I order and what is the best source?

Many thanks,
Michael

Re: [RE-wrenches] Radian Generator Relay

2021-09-14 Thread Michael Morningstar
I did not check whether or not the 12v relay was functional.
I think I see where you are going. If the 12V relay isn’t working also, then
the issue is elsewhere? Is that correct?

I did look into using the FNDC relay, however it appears that it’s control is
through the FNDC menu. Things are so simple when all my client has to do to
control the generator is push the GEN button and choose a mode. Searching for
the FNDC menu adds a layer of complexity.
However,
What I’m seeing is that the board that the relay is on is part of a stack
boards that costs 2K. So, it sounds like my options are to check to see if the
12v relay functions and then use that to drive a relay, or use the FNDC relay,
or spend 2k for the board stack.

[RE-wrenches] Blue Ion and closed loop charging

This question is for installers of Blue Ion. Have any of you used
Schneider to close loop charge? I have a client who really wants to do
this. I am really happy with Discover AES but might need to do this.
Schneider says they support it but I want to know if this gets Soc and
battery data out to the Web portal Insight Cloud. See pix Thx!

[RE-wrenches] Radian Generator Relay

2021-09-14 Thread Michael Morningstar

Many thanks,
Michael
