Re: [RE-wrenches] Sunny Island AC-Coupled system integration with Fortress E-Vault

2023-10-25 Thread Roland Shackelford via RE-wrenches
Hey Michael,

Sorry to hear about your problems.

We have gone through several SMA SI issues that can be very difficult to
narrow down but found most of the time the issues are founded on miss
understanding the affects that different set points have on the over all
system operation.

In your system, I assume but want to confirm that the Sunny boys are set to
off grid mode? And they have hardwired communications with Sunny Islands
with the proper piggy back cards installed?

We have two SMA SI offgrid system that we replaced lead acid batteries with
LFP and are successfully operating both in open loop communications. Both
are working well with minimal variation in SOC between SMA and batteries,
both do have separate DC charging sources and therefore have external
shunts enabled for monitoring the external charging sources (not sure if
this plays a factor). Both are properly regulating the AC coupled PV, but
took some adjustments to the SI charging parameters boost, full charge,
float and equalize, to get it working well, as well as we found VRLA
default battery SOC algorithm works better with LFP replacements.

Also one point of note is on any new battery programing the system attempts
to do a full charge and automatically sets battery SOC to 50%, how ever if
everything is programmed correctly it should just raise the battery to its
full voltage and hold it there, and it will then slowly auto correct the
SOC.

What did you set the max charge current for the batteries at?

Have the batteries discharged over a night and does this still happen when
the batteries are at a discharged state?

If you want to talk through details, you can reach me on my cell, just be
mindful of hawaii time.

Aloha,

[RE-wrenches] Metal Truss Roofs

2023-10-25 Thread James Rudolph via RE-wrenches
Aloha Wrenches,

I have a good for the group. Does anyone know a lag/fastener other than
EJOT that could be used to install PV to a home with metal trusses? To
complicate things the roof is tile and the decking is 1/2" ply.
We do have access to the attic, but in only half the house because of the
cathedral ceilings. I am thinking of reducing the array size and doing
through bolts that would have to be fastened from inside the attic.
Please let me know if anyone has an idea or solution here.

Good times.

Mahalo in advance.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Outback Radian Generator Charging

2023-10-25 Thread William Miller via RE-wrenches
Amos:

At the risk of stating the obvious: The batteries have to be ready to
accept maximum charge. They need to be in good condition and fully
discharged. Max charge amps will occur only briefly then the charge rate
will start to taper. Your charging settings need to be correct including
temperature compensation. Any other charge inputs need to be disabled
during testing, such as solar, wind or hydro.

Check for THD on the generator output. If the waveform deviates much from
sinusoidal the inherent power will be reduced. Radians have been known to
instigate high THD rates on generator feeds during charging, especially in
Generator input mode. Trying the Support mode is good advice.

(We had this case

a while back. Recently a random person called to relate he had similar
problems and found our case study. He installed a capacitor (20mFd?) on
the generator leads and the THD decreased significantly. I have not tried
this.)

Hello wrenches,

We just installed an GS8048a Radian build with Mate 3SL controller (no
Optics). We are having some with charging from the generator, as the
generator charging seems to be limited to about 4500Watts +/- (20amps AC)
when charging through the Radian. It is a Kohler 8.5RES generator and we
have the AC input limit set to 30amps and the Gen input set to 30amps. The
house load is only about 200Watts when we are charging. The system is at
2200ft of elevation, but I don’t know if that makes enough of a difference.

The Gen output voltage seems pretty good and holds around 234V-236V while
charging.

Any thoughts as to why it may be limiting would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Amos

Re: [RE-wrenches] Off Grid, Cloudy Days, Solar Tilt Question

2023-10-25 Thread Eric Smiley via RE-wrenches
It is difficult to quantify but this was pointed out to me years ago by a
long-time off-grid installer, who also lives off grid on Vancouver Island
where weeks of solid cloud isn't unusual. We never tilt to latitude + 10 to
15 for off-grid, as many textbooks recommend.
Latitude works quite well. When I've tried modelling it, January is the
only month that seems to outperform when tilted at less than latitude,
which is often our cloudiest month. We also have a lot of conifers here so
tilting to 60 degrees often means the modules are facing the trees anyway.
Fortunately we don't get much snow so a shallow tilt is OK.

Hi All!We
don't do a lot of pure off-grid systems and I recently ran across
something I wanted to run by folks with more experience in this area:
Optimal array tilt for our very cloudy PNW winters!

My
understanding has always been that latitude plus 10-15 degrees was
the best tilt to address our winter energy shortage. However a paper
I recently read (1), makes a compelling case for a much shallower
tilt in situations where the cloud cover is so heavy that "diffuse"
solar radiation is all that makes it through. They indicate that
under those conditions a horizontal array will produce significantly
more energy than even a two-axis tracker!

Given
that the challenge in our off-grid setups always seems to be making

Re: [RE-wrenches] Outback Radian Generator Charging

2023-10-25 Thread integrityenergy101 via RE-wrenches
Charger Limit is also set to 30 amps. We tried raising the total AC input limit
to max and that may have helped increase the chargeby 200-300watts up to 4.8kw
but thats it. By my math we should be able to see about 6KW+/- of charging
power. We are using Generator input mode I  believe.  We will try switching to
Support mode and see if that helps.  By the way batteries are 8- Simpliphi 3.8.

[RE-wrenches] Off Grid, Cloudy Days, Solar Tilt Question

2023-10-25 Thread Kirk Bailey via RE-wrenches
 Dave,

The paper reference was at the bottom of my original post (1), but a
quick summary of what they recommended was exactly what you mentioned -
Have two axis trackers "go horizontal" during heavy overcast instead of
continuing to track the sun to improve production!

I'm familiar with the general tradeoffs for off-grid in terms of array
oversizing, generator usage, and load shedding: We have had past customers
that have made it work for them, and others that couldn't and ultimately
decided to get a grid connection!

Cheers,

Kirk Bailey
k...@abundantsolar.com

Kirk,

Can you reference your paper on this? So many variables and each location
will be different. Most dual axis
trackers can always be left flat or any angle so that does not make sense
to me.

You have to design for winter offgrid if the location is worth it. Or, alot
of hours on a genset.

Super large arrays in your area will help give you more days/hours before
you need the iron genoa.
You have to decide if it is worth the money. The home has to have the
ability to shed some loads also.

Re: [RE-wrenches] XW Drop in replacement inverter

2023-10-25 Thread Kevin Pegg via RE-wrenches
Dave,

My work is focused on remote, off-grid clients. With the XW6048, and XW+6048 it
worked well. Gen 1 on AC1, Gen 2 on AC2. Set the AGS start settings a bit lower
for second gen. Then if any issues with Gen1, Gen 2 would catch it and less
urgent service calls to remote wherever to sort out. Whole lot simpler and cost
savings for client as compared to external transfer switches and paired gensets.

With XWPro, AC1 is no longer available for generator as far as I can tell. I
spent a lot of time with tech support on my first XWPro using same configs.
They didn’t seem to realize this initially as well. Gen 1/AC1 would kick into
passthrough mode but refused to engage charger consistently. Took a lot of
time, but finally was informed that AC1 no longer supports generators.

I wish there was a way to load XW+ firmware onto XWPro, or such to make the
XWPro off-grid friendly and rid of parameters related to grid tie.

Not getting this Kevin, AC2 has always been the generator input as it allows
wider frequency and voltage settings for drifting gensets.

AC1 will no longer accept generator input, it's grid-only now. So if you have a

changes with the XWPro. Makes dual-generator configs a lot more complex now.

We have a client that had us construct a solar trailer for them back in

if the Schneider rep (or you savvy off grid guys) on here could tell me if the

Re: [RE-wrenches] Off Grid, Cloudy Days, Solar Tilt Question

2023-10-25 Thread Bradley Bassett via RE-wrenches
I used to have both an array at a 60° tilt and one at 14° tilt. In the
winter the high tilt array did better on sunny days, and on cloudy days the
shallow array did better. They were different modules and different sized
arrays, so without more analysis than I did, it would be hard to tell which
is better through the winter, but it looked like they were similar in
overall output. However, once March rolled around the steeper array started
to do much better (more sun), and by summer the shallow array did much
better. I'm at 47° N and I think if I had a choice of any tilt, but without
adjustability, I'd probably set it at latitude or therabouts. If you're
west of the mountains you're probably going to need another source of power
anyway. I say that, but judging from the modelling I did of the output of
my micro-inverter system it might just be possible to get through the
winter with an array 500% overisized. And that with only 2 or 3 days of
battery autonomy. This was surprising to me. Do keep in mind that an array
with snow on it has 0 output.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Sol-Ark phantom loads

Just spent yesterday debugging a Sol-Ark 15 kW inverter phantom load
weirdness.

With Work Mode set at Limited Power To Home it seemed to get a bit schizo,
pulling around 6kW in from the grid on leg L1 and around 13 kW on the other
L2 leg, with 7kW of PV added. No house loads were involved. The monitoring
called this a 13 kW load.

I measured something like 50 amps on L2 and neutral; 120 Volts on L1 and 125
Volts on L2 at the house. My Fluke clamp-on amp meter does not say which way
AC current is flowing. The utility meter showed it as power coming in.

At the main meter panel about 150 ft away from the house the voltages were
better balanced; probably due to proximity to the utility transformer. Those
leg voltages were balanced when the inverter was shut down.

Oddly, this phantom loading decreased with decreasing PV production later in
the day.

Working with Sol-Ark tech support we (of course) downloaded new firmware,
then changed Work Mode to Limited Power To Load. After a couple of resets
this had the effect of allowing the inverter to cover just the loads in the
battery-backed subpanel; not those at the house main panel where the CT
sensors are located. The phantom 13kW load has not recurred.

Has anyone seen an inverter try to mix import and export on different legs
by creating phantom loads?

the most irritating changes with the XWPro. Makes dual-generator

Looking at creating an insulated closet & using terrarium heaters controlled

Has anyone else done something similar?

Has anyone done this & it did not work?

2200' EL should not influence the generator, seems the first 4500-5000' are
covered like sealevel. How old is gen?

Have you been into the settings menu as well as the Wizard?

I have found settings in one and not the other that definitely effect the
overall parameters.

A call to OB might shortcut your Q.

Hello wrenches,

We just installed an GS8048a Radian build with Mate 3SL controller (no Optics).
We are having some with charging from the generator, as the generator charging
seems to be limited to about 4500Watts +/- (20amps AC) when charging through
the Radian. It is a Kohler 8.5RES generator and we have the AC input limit set
to 30amps and the Gen input set to 30amps. The house load is only about
200Watts when we are charging. The system is at 2200ft of elevation, but I
don’t know if that makes enough of a difference.
The Gen output voltage seems pretty good and holds around 234V-236V while
charging.

Any thoughts as to why it may be limiting would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Aren’t AC 1 and AC 2 technically interchangeable? You can set AC priority,

Re: [RE-wrenches] XW Drop in replacement inverter

2023-10-25 Thread Dave Angelini Offgrid Solar via RE-wrenches

Not getting this Kevin, AC2 has always been the generator input as it
allows wider frequency and voltage settings for drifting gensets.

Wrenches,

We have a client that had us construct a solar trailer for them back in
2014-2015 timeframe. The Current XW6048-120/240-60 is cooked and I'm
wondering if the Schneider rep (or you savvy off grid guys) on here
could tell me if the newer XW Pro 6.8kW 120/240 is an exact drop in
replacement for a system including the the old power distribution panel
accessories.

Thanks!

Physically it is all the same. Software is way more complex. As Dave mentioned,
you have to follow the commissioning process.

genset you will need to move that to AC2. This is one of the most irritating
changes with the XWPro. Makes dual-generator configs a lot more complex now.
