Re: [RE-wrenches] Racking on residential rooftops

2024-10-04 Thread AE Solar via RE-wrenches
We also never had luck with a laser, although early on that is something we
definitely tried. We use a string line. We keep drops of 2x4 that are cut
to the length of our most common panel sizes, and fasten them on to the
rails with mid clips. That way we can easily reference where the top and
bottom of the row will end up.

The installers can choose to run their stringline on the top of the 2x4 or
on the bottom (depending on the logistics of that particular row). Its good
to double check the string line in reference to the ridge, shingle line or
drip line in various places before installing.

Then they set the second panel in the row and work their way down. Once the
row is complete the 2x4s and string line are dropped, the rails are cut to
length (we run them wild originally, and cut them flush at the end) and the
first and last panel are installed

One of our installers worked for a much larger company at some point, and
he said they didn’t use a string at all. Their method was to “keep someone
on the ground who just looked at the row and told them if it seemed like it
was going straight”. Seems like a disaster waiting to happen to me …but
that company has a lot of installs in the area and they look fine.

[RE-wrenches] IRA Domestic Content Bonus Credit

2024-05-03 Thread AE Solar via RE-wrenches
Wrenches,
I'm wondering if any of you have thoughts/experience with the additional
10% ITC that the Inflation Reduction Act allocates for "domestic content".
I'm doing some googling but not really sure what equipment (racking,
panels, inverters, BOM, etc) we would need to install in order to qualify
for this, and what the parameters are to qualify something as 'domestic
content'. If anyone has rough thoughts or information sources to share I'm
all ears...

We were able to access that a few years ago for a brewery project and were
granted the money. I used a grant writer who works with solar companies
specifically on accessing that funding. Their intake online walked you
through what you may or may not be eligible for. They were great to work
with and I felt the price was worth it. I could dig up their contact info
if that’s of interest.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SMA String inverters

2024-01-08 Thread AE Solar via RE-wrenches
We haven’t used the -41s for just over a year, because they aren’t UL1741SB
compliant (which became required here in NY last January). Additionally,
the last time we did use the -41s we discovered (upon receiving the units)
that they weren’t WiFi compatible anymore (due to some parts shortages) and
that the inverters had to be hardwired in order to access monitoring. The
new inverter line that shows up on the SMA website is UL1741SB compliant,
but the last time I checked with my distributor (a few weeks ago) they
still weren’t able to get access to them.

[RE-wrenches] Enphase Gateway causing lamp to flicker

2023-12-11 Thread AE Solar via RE-wrenches
Wrenches
We have a project where the homeowner has some of those bedside lamps where
you touch them to turn them on/off/dim (rather than having a switch). It
seems like when the Enphase Gateway is powered up it causes the lights to
freak out. Once we flip the breaker to the Gateway off the lamp operates as
normalZ Interestingly, with another load (homeowner was using a
dehumidifier) plugged into the circuit it seems to stabilize the lights. We
isolated the problem to the Gateway specifically (ie having PV breakers
on/off doesn’t make a difference). It’s a supply side connection. The house
is small but we tried the lamp in multiple parts of the house and it
happens everywhere. Enphase doesn’t have any ideas. Anyone have this
happen to them?

I think we might just need to buy them some new lamps, but I’m also
interested to understand what is happening. These are just some cheap
lamps, but wondering if other household loads that are more sensitive might
be affected as well?

[RE-wrenches] SMA Tech Support

2023-07-24 Thread AE Solar via RE-wrenches
Hey all,
After the typical 1 hour wait to get up to Level 2 for SMA tech support,
the tech mentioned there might be some option where you get registered (or
possibly pay) to bypass Level 1? Or somehow get more streamlined service?
He didn't know how or where to access that service. Has anyone heard of
this and/or utilized it? Forever frustrated with their wait times. Thanks
for any feedback.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Bonding Metal Roofs Part II

2023-06-14 Thread AE Solar via RE-wrenches
Dave,
Interested to hear how you all are complying with NYSERDA on bonding in the
3' perimeter outside of the array. Their QA team just points me towards the
Illsco SGB-4 lugs, but sometimes there is no graceful way for us to install
them. If we can't get easy access under a ridge cap to hide/protect the
lugs, then the only other solution seems to be Michael's idea of running
lugs/bare copper on the seams outside of the array perimeter (which
sometimes includes whole other adjacent roof sections). Aside from being
aesthetically unpleasant, I'm also skeptical that ice and snow won't grab
onto the copper and tear the lugs off eventually...

[RE-wrenches] Bonding Metal Roofs Part II

2023-06-05 Thread AE Solar via RE-wrenches
Hey all,
I had started a thread about bonding to metal roofs in 2018 but can't
figure out how to respond via the archive. I know some things have changed
since then, so I'm circling back and starting a new thread.

In NY one of our inspection agencies (NYSERDA) requires bonding of metal
roof panels below the array, as well as within a 3' perimeter of the array.
S-5! in combination with Ironridge is now listed to bond the roof under the
array (so long as you hit every pan with an attachment) but this doesn't
solve the problem of trying to bond within the 3' perimeter. For installs
where we are only 18" from the ridge, this means we are required to bond
the adjacent roof as well.

Whenever possible we install Illsco SGB-4 lugs under the ridge cap. But
more and more we're finding roofs where the ridge cap feels inaccessible,
tricky, or where we simply don't want to get into roof warranty issues
associated with opening up a prior contractor's work.

Wondering if anyone else is coming up against this and what some possible
creative solutions might be. I don't want to walk away from potential
projects but...

As always, thanks for any thoughts
Adam

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solar Roof Jack

2022-05-12 Thread AE Solar via RE-wrenches
We just used a few of these recently. Seemed easy enough and plan on using
more on an upcoming project. We had easy access to the vent in the attic
which probably helped. Only complaint was that I was worried about the vent
cap (provided) blowing off and eventually having debris get in there and
get stuck in the horizontal run on the roof. I’m not a plumber though…so
maybe I’m over thinking it. We put a screw into the cap just in case

Re: [RE-wrenches] Monitoring on Remote Sites

2022-03-16 Thread AE Solar
Hey all,

Thanks for all the good info and sorry for the slow reply. I meant to
mention in the first post that line of sight is an issue. It’s probably a
quarter mile (maybe less) through forested terrain to the nearest building
on the property that has WiFi. There is also a decent elevation change (the
array is uphill from the building…maybe 40’ of difference in elevation?)

To answer Sam’s questions, we could put AC at each inverter if that needed
to happen. Maybe since line of sight is an issue, Glenn’s suggestion of
looking into a Yagi antenna is best place to start?

[RE-wrenches] Monitoring on Remote Sites

2022-03-14 Thread AE Solar
Wrenchers,
We have a project on a large property, where the install site has no
internet (there is internet much further away on the property, and on a
different service) and cell reception is pretty bad. We attempted to use
SMA Cell Modem Kits (sunny boy inverters), but couldn't get a good enough
signal for them to work. The client was fine with having just a production
meter with no internet based monitoring. Now there is the possibility of
expanding the system quite a bit (also with Sunny Boy's), and I'd prefer to
figure out a way to monitor everything from offsite. Has anyone had
any success using a third party antenna with the SMA Cell Modem Kits? Or
have thoughts on other methods for setting up monitoring where we could, at
a minimum, see the combined output of all the inverters? Thanks for any
thoughts.

[RE-wrenches] Pitch Pockets

Anyone have a favorite pitch pocket they use for flat roofs? We have a
larger residential system with an EPDM flat roof (decking, 2" of rigid
insulation, then EPDM). We are trying to keep the array as low to the roof
as possible. We've used Chemlink E-Curbs to seal around stand-off's in the
past, but figured I'd reach out and see if there are any other
products folks like?
Thanks.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Strange noises from the roof

2021-10-20 Thread AE Solar
Jason,

We had a similar situation with a SnapNRack UR-40 system. Homeowner said
everyone once and a while they would hear a sound like "an acorn hitting
the roof". It was pretty sporadic, but at least a few times a day. Install
happened in late fall when there can be decent temperature changes
throughout the day. Also, it was a cathedral ceiling below the install, so
it's possible the sound was amplified by that (rather than being dampened
by an attic).

All racking was installed as per SNR's specifications with gaps in the rail
splices for expansion etc. Short edge of the panels were spaced so that
they didn't touch each other. Talked with SNR and they didn't have any
ideas. The install happened directly after some other work was completed on
that roof section (cellulose insulation was blown in, new shingles, some
new decking in places, drywall, etc) so couldn't be sure in the end if it
was related to us or somehow related to any of the other work that had
happened (although they didn't notice it until the panels went up). The
engineer said maybe there was just some settling in the house due to all
the work. Doesn't sound like it was nearly as extreme as your situation
though, and we never figured out exactly what it was.

[RE-wrenches] Buchanan Crimps in Outdoor Boxes

2021-08-16 Thread AE Solar
Wrenchers,
Some point back we transitioned from polaris lugs to buchanan crimps/caps
(doping our wires in noalox) for our jbox splices. I know there have been a
few conversations on here about this. Seems like a much more robust
connection than anything we have used prior. But now we have an inspector
who isn't in support of using them for outdoor/damp locations. To be fair
(although it seems like a far superior connection) Ideal doesn't have
documentation to support outdoor use. I know a lot of folks on here have
had solid/long lasting results though. In any event, we may have to
transition away from buchanan crimps and wondering what you all recommend
as your second (or first) choice? Or if anyone has experience with
supporting this application when dealing with inspectors? Do we go back to
polaris lugs? I know there was a conversation a while back about failures
with those...
Thanks for any thoughts.

[RE-wrenches] Bad Diodes in QCells?

2020-11-05 Thread AE Solar
Wrenchers,
Wondering if anyone has had any experience with bad diodes in QCell panels.
Two of our projects this summer had panels that were putting out half of
their rated voltage. At first it seemed like it was a defect from the
factory, and it was caught upon commissioning the system, but I'm now
seeing that another panel has gone bad about two months after install. I've
spoken with a few distributors and they said they haven't heard anything
about this being a pattern. I'm in the RMA process with QCell, and don't
feel like I'm getting complete transparency from them. So far we have 8
defective panels out of 300. It was in two different projects that were
months apart. I'm not sure if they were from the same shipment or not. All
of them were Q.PEAK DUO 400 watt panels. Interested to know if anyone else
is having similar experiences? Thanks for any thoughts.

[RE-wrenches] TS4R-F Feedback

2020-07-18 Thread AE Solar
Wrenchers,
Does anyone have feedback on using TS4R-F for rapid shutdown? It was a
tough run for us with RMA's on the SMA Rapid Shutdown boxes. We never
messed around with Tigo but have followed threads here, and recently had an
SMA tech tell me "he wouldn't wish it on his worst enemy". Probably going
to give the TS4R-F a shot with some SMA installs but interested to hear any
feedback on product reliability. Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: [RE-wrenches] protecting wire below 8'

Kirk,
Not sure if this helps but
690.31(A) “where PV source and output circuits operating at max system
voltages greater than 30v are installed in readily accessible locations,
circuit conductors shall be guarded or installed in a raceway”

It doesn’t mention 8’ but mentions “readily accessible”. We have AHJs that
interpret that as 8’ unless a 6’ fence is installed around the array. I
don’t have a reference for those measurements though...just feedback we
have gotten from inspectors

Re: [RE-wrenches] Bi-facial modules

2019-08-13 Thread AE Solar
We did a small project with Prism two years ago. In the end (3) of our (30)
panels shattered over the course of the first year. Learning curve all
around. Be very careful, the edges are super fragile and a mild impact can
cause the whole panel to shatter (their engineers said that once an
installers wedding ring shattered a panel when he grabbed it!?). Not sure
if that is the case with all bifacials or just theirs. Prism replaced at
least 2 (maybe all 3?) panels for us, but was a pain to extract them from
the array. But, as Andrew mentioned, Tyler and everyone there was super
patient and helpful through it all.

The custom racking that Prism recommended looked sleek but ultimately I
think it caused us a lot of problems and I probably wouldn’t use it again.

The Enphase CTs are directional. There is an arrow on them. I believe it’s
supposed to point towards the load side for both consumption and production
but not positive off the top of my head.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase IQ series inverters

2018-03-30 Thread AE Solar
one thing that's cool with the new IQ system is that you have the option to
not only monitor your production, but also your consumption. in order to do
this you will need to run a CT to the lineside of your MSP, so even if you
use a dedicated load center for Enphase equip, be prepared to run wire to
the MSP if you want to use the consumption feature. also worth noting that
while their isn't a neutral coming from the inverters, you will need a
neutral in the load center for the envoy...

[RE-wrenches] Prism Solar Panels Failing

2018-01-22 Thread AE Solar
Hey Wrenchers,
We just did our first install with Prism Solar bi-facial panels (Bi-48
286's). So far two panels have shattered already. Both were from mild
impacts (the battery of a drill hitting the panel with not much force
behind it). The system is only about 6 weeks old. I'm in contact with Prism
and waiting to hear their response but am wondering if anyone else has
worked with these panels or heard of any problems like this?

Wrenches,
Is anyone aware of any existing or future efforts that solar techs can tap
into in order to lend a hand either here or over in PR? I had been pursuing

raining (although I think it was actually an arc fault message). It was
unrelated to an RSB (didn't exist yet). There is a thread about it here

Re: [RE-wrenches] Disposal of large scale PV installation?

2017-06-21 Thread AE Solar
I'm just following up on this thread late. We are located not too far from
the array that was coming down and ended up putting in a bid to do the
demolition/removal of the panels. The contract was won by someone else, so
I'm not sure where those specific panels will end up, but it was definitely
an interesting project to research. In all the folks I talked with I only
heard of one other large scale system (5 MW maybe?) that came down
prematurely (due to hail damage). I assume that decommissioning these large
scale systems is something that is going to become more and more prevalent
though. Moving forward I think we will be trying to add the deconstruction
of large scale arrays into our scope of work.

[RE-wrenches] Racking for solar canopy

2017-05-28 Thread AE Solar
Wrenches,
We are doing some small solar canopies (bifacial panels on wooden purgola
type substructures) and looking for racking ideas. The solution offered to
us right now is by a company called structural solar, and is nice because
it is sleek, offers a place to hide all the wires, and creates a rain tight
canopy...but it's pricey. Does anyone have other recommendations
for racking solutions they have used in similar scenarios?
Thanks
Adam

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solarworld 285 watt end frames

2017-05-24 Thread AE Solar
With Solarworld/SnapNRack we run wires in the rail and use clips on the
long edge of the frame when needed. SnapNRack has a clip that fits in the
upper rail groove to hold wires down into it. The snap n rack part you are
referencing (I think they call it 'box frame adapter') is good if you want
to attach squirrel netting to the short edge of the panels, but it's bulky
and expensive. I don't think it will do much for attaching wire clips.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SMA Rapid Shutdown issues

2017-02-21 Thread AE Solar
I know that when I talked to SMA about our first install with the RSD boxes
they suggested an order of operations for making all the final connections
that might not be mentioned in the install manual. It wAs supposed to help
prevent some problem they had been having with the boxes (although I'm
unclear what the specifics of the problem was). They mentioned that they
were having people disconnect all the MC connections to the box and re
connect to reset the box if an issue occurred. We never ended up having any
issues so didn't need to go
Through that procedure. Don't know if they mentioned that as an option for
you on your trouble shooting?

OK thanks August. 2014 NEC 705.12(D) (5) is the answer I was looking for. I
wasn't aware that I didn't need the retention clip. Sorry for the
confusion. Thanks everyone.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Retaining Clips

2016-11-30 Thread AE Solar
I'm also just now realizing that if I were to rate my wire from the
tap/main panel to my 70A disconnect I would want #6awg wire and the QO
breakers only go to #8.

Drake if I went from the tap right into the lugs, it would leave those lugs
hot and exposed. Is that my only option though?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Retaining Clips

2016-11-30 Thread AE Solar
Sorry I should have elaborated more from the beginning.

I am using the panel as a service disconnect for a lineside connection
(can’t use a fused/bladed disco because of space constraints). Originally I
bought a QO 70A panel, but soon realized that the Square D retention clip
(PK2MB) is only compatible with their larger panels. So I bought a larger
panel (100A 8 Circuit) and then received some feedback that having the open
spaces (even if labeled that “Do Not Add Loads”) could raise a flag with an
inspector. So then I was back on the hunt for a dedicated 2 Pole 60A or 70A
panel with a compatible retention clip for a 30A breaker. Eaton’s retention
options only start in the 60A range (the smaller breakers don’t have the
hole in them to put the bolt through). Square D said they don’t have an
option for their 70A panel. There aren’t any good Siemans distributors near
me but I wasn’t finding an option via google for them either.

I talked with another Wrencher on the phone and received this feedback
which I’m just going to cut and paste to include it in this thread:

“The NEC doesn’t require a hold down clamp for the circuit breaker unless
it can be backfed from a multi-mode or stand-alone inverter (690.10(E)).

The language implies that a hold-down is therefore not required elsewhere.
Most modern breakers (def. QO’s) are not marked “line” and “load” so no
problem there (also in same code section).

Even when it was a requirement for all PV outputs, John Wiles had argued
that taking off the panel cover, which required a tool, served as the
hold-down, and this was generally accepted.”

So taken that advice I’m back to using the QO 70A panel but without a
retention clip (or calling the lid the "retention clip").

For what its worth I have passed inspections prior using the retaining clip
from a generator interlock kit (QOCGK2C) on a QO 100A panel, but felt like
there must be a better option out there

[RE-wrenches] Retaining Clips

2016-11-29 Thread AE Solar
Wrenchers,

I’m trying to find a 60A 2 Pole Breaker Box that has a compatible retaining
clip. The QO retaining clip (PK2MBCP) seems to only be compatible with
their 4-8 circuit load centers. What are my options? Thanks!

Thanks

Thanks Allan,
I agree the PVC is better for corrosion, but if I sweep up with PVC I will
be running DC in PVC inside the house for however many inches it takes to
convert to EMT...which is a part I'm not sure about.

[RE-wrenches] Conduit in a slab

2016-10-29 Thread AE Solar
Wrenches,
I have a project where the DC run is going through the wall system of the
house, down through the slab, out the building underground and into another
building. My preference would be to run PVC in the slab and then stub out
of it with a metal 90.
I'm unclear if that is allowed. Is conduit in the slab considered to be
inside the house and therefore should be metal? Thanks for any thoughts.

[RE-wrenches] Bifacial Panels

2016-10-21 Thread AE Solar
Wrenchers,

A customer is interested in a bifacial panel for a solar canopy at the
entrance of their business. They had looked into Lumos and Supreme. Some
time ago I had looked into Prism. Right now I'm considering Sunpreme only
because they have panels up to 370 Watts. Honestly though, I've never
worked with any of these. Anyone have any feedback? Any obvious pros and
cons (anything from ease of install, to aesthetics, to durability)? Thanks
for any thoughts.

Re: [RE-wrenches] closets and working space

2016-06-02 Thread AE Solar
Ha thanks. I figured there was something about that situation that wasn't
right. The main panel is already located there. Maybe I will just add a
partition into the closet (it's probably 8' wide) so that half can be
designated 'coat closet' and the other half designated 'utility closet'?

Hey Wrenches,
We'd like to put a combo panel in a coat closet (its shallow and wide)
right next to the existing panel. With the doors open (they are pocket
doors) it is fine with working space requirements. I know the AHJ will have

[RE-wrenches] Winter Battery Maintenance

2016-04-30 Thread AE Solar
Hey Wrenchers,

A friend wants a very small battery set up at hunting cabin (like under
1kW). It will only be used in the warmer months. I'm wondering what you all
recommend for the batteries over the winter. I assume the ideal situation
would be that they would be disconnected and brought somewhere warm for the
winter (the cabin will be subject to below freezing temps)??

So long as they go into the colder months with a full charge is it alright
to leave them hooked up? I don't think the friend will be savvy enough to
disconnect/connect them every year and I don't feel like having to go out
there every season for them.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: [RE-wrenches] AFCI trip on metal roof

We had that issue once. It was after a night of heavy rainfall and the
error only read for the first few early hours of the day. SMA told us it
was a poor connection in an MC4 connector that most likely got some
dampness in it...

[RE-wrenches] MIGB's

2016-02-16 Thread AE Solar
Wrenchers,
What are you all using as strain reliefs on the ends of conduit runs that
run between arrays on roof mounts? We have arrays on two roof sections with
a piece of rigid conduit connecting the two, and galvanized MIGB's (ground
bushings maybe some people call them?) on each end of the pipe. It was just
cited on an inspection that this was improper use of equipment because the
galv MIGB's are not rated for outdoor use? Anyone have anything to back up
the use of this method or have a preferred method for strain relief and
bonding for this application? Thanks for any thoughts.

[RE-wrenches] Masdar Panels

Hey Wrenchers,
I have a business owner who bought (on a whim?) 2,000 Masdar MPV-S panels a
few years back and they have been sitting in the shipping container ever
since. Now he wants them installed. From what I've read so far the company
went under last year and they only had a 5 year limited-warranty even when
the company still existed. Anyone ever install these or have any knowledge
of how well they held up? Thanks

Re: [RE-wrenches] Snow Guards

2015-09-09 Thread AE Solar
As an aside, I often notice arrays that fill a roof (gutter to ridge) that
are often located in places I would assume it would not be good for snow to
shed (i.e. a walkway or driveway). I'm wondering if this is something that
is communicated with customers? Do those of you in snowy areas sacrifice
size of an array to compensate for this or just come to an understanding
with a customer that this is a hazard they (or their cars) could face.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Snow Guards

2015-09-09 Thread AE Solar
Bill,

It's a comp roof @ 30 degrees. The array could be as close as 20" to the
bottom edge of the roof. Two rows of panels in portrait on two different
roof sections. It's a 7.2kW system. We are in NY and snow seems to be
completely variable these last few years but looks like the average has
been about 60" traditionally.

The snowguards were an afterthought, and I'm not sure if I can switch the
panels to run in landscape...which would be preferable if snow is going to
shed slower.

I'm looking into snow guards for an array that would shed snow right into a

I haven't had to use any sort of snow guard so far, but I guess I should be

[RE-wrenches] UL 508 Listing

2015-05-21 Thread AE Solar
 Wrenchers,

I am interested in using a 6 Pole DC disconnect for a project with TL
inverters. It’s made by a company called DC SunVolt. The data sheet says
“Suitable as PV disconnect switch in accordance with Article 690 of NFPA
(NEC) UL 508, including the requirements for PV applications. UL 508i by
UL”.

IT IS NOT UL 1741 listed though.

My understanding is that this is OK , because it’s not a combiner…it’s just
a switch (6 conductors in and 6 conductors out). A colleague expressed
concern that an inspector might give me a warm time about it. I’ve reached
out repeatedly to the inspector and not heard back.

Anyone have thoughts?

Thanks

Hey Wrenches,
We are installing some inverters in a basement where the height we hang
them at is limited by some windows. I'm trying to find a code reference
that says how far off the ground the DC/AC disco on the inverter needs to
be but am not finding one. Could be that they are in the 3' range. Not
ideal but might be our best option. Anyone know where I could look up

[RE-wrenches] Wire protection for ground mount

Hey Wrenchers,

Does anyone have suggestions for netting/protecting wires behind a ground
mount (for keeping hands out of there...not animals). I have seen quite a
few home-made'ish looking options on systems around here (screwing hardware
cloth onto the back of frames/racking, etc) but am looking for a more
professional optionideally something that is as clean looking as
possible. For what its worth the panels will be (4) high in landscape.
Thanks for any thoughts.
