Re: [RE-wrenches] Magnum System - Discharged Battery Bank
How about the possibility of the batteries being overcharged, thus a ruined battery bank? From there we will hopefully be able to run some more determinate tests. My question about the low-battery-cutout was more intended to explore whether others have ever experienced any similar issues with this protection feature. I am finding out that the feature is only relevant during inverting (not charging) mode and so would imply that the utility feed had been cut, which does not appear to be the case. - Our battery distributor has lent us a 12-circuit trickle charger - one set of alligator clips per battery. I am planning to re-visit the jobsite later today to put each battery on a trickle charge, which I am told will take 1-2 weeks for any lasting change to take effect. The distributor advised to reverse the leads on the batteries with negative voltage, hoping that they may be recoverable as reversed pole batteries thenceforth. -- Corey On Tue, Dec 16, 2014 at 8:27 PM, cshalan...@joule-energy.com wrote: Wrenches, I visited a customer today whose grid-tied battery backup system suffered some sort of catastrophic failure, and now I'm trying to play detective to figure out what happened and whose equipment/design is to blame. Technician who initially responded claims he measured 240v across the relay's terminals - relay manufacturer claims this is 100% impossible. We removed the relay from the circuit, and the Sunny Boy is again operational. - On arrival I found the Magnum display showing a Low Battery Charge message with the bank measuring ~4Vdc. The individual batteries were in various states of charge, ranging from high of 6.3v to low of -2.6v. These measurements were taken at rest, all battery cables disconnected, and yes three of the batts were registering a negative voltage. - Customer reports that he was not aware of any recent prolonged power outages. The three potential suspects would seem to be: - SS relay: The customer is convinced that this is the weak link in the system and somehow triggered this failure. I am not so convinced but would be interested to hear recommendations for properly testing its functionality. - Magnum equipment: Since there is low-battery-cutout protection, why would this feature not have activated and prevented the batteries from draining so low? - Batteries: I am not very familiar with modes of failure, but our distributor suggested that an internal short could be a possibility - what might have triggered this? Clearly I am fishing for potential leads here, so any suggestions are welcome. [RE-wrenches] LBX with Magnum?
Greetings, I'm trying to set up a magnum inverter to reconnect after a low battery cut out condition at a higher voltage than is presently set. Basically like the old SW inverters LBX mode. Magnum tech-support thought using the advanced remote control can work but I'm not seeing that adjustable setting in any of the menus. I would call it low battery cut in. There is no AC input to this inverter so we want the batteries to recharge with the PV system until it gets to a higher voltage, say 55 V before the inverter turns back on. We also have a midnight charge controller on board but I'm trying to use the inverter features first. Well, pond, spring box? How many gallons per day (GPD) do you need delivered, on average? GPD is a much more useful figure for sizing PV-direct pumps. Is that 600 ft of head measured from the standing water level to the top of the storage tank, as just elevation change and not distance? A 600 foot-deep well might actually have a standing water level at 300-400 ft. Even if the pump is set at 600 ft, it only takes energy to lift water from its standing level, so your head figure would be inaccurate if that is the case. If it's a well, what is the diameter of the well casing? What are the peak sun-hours at the site during the darkest time of year that the water is needed? There are lots of other questions to ask, but these should help a lot. It also moves the rectifier down to the ground, and offers a braking disconnect system to shut the turbine down completely if needed. The Classic by itself isn't really controlling the turbine speed, and counting on the XL,1 mechanical governing design by itself is definitely full hardy. Unfortunately, Bergey's new staff is not really up to full speed yet on what is needed to make their turbines work long term. At least they've abandoned the old XL.1 controller. Hopefully the turbine itself hasn't changed too much; I've seen them survive some very high speed winds and direct lightning strikes. Re: [RE-wrenches] advice on testing turbine on tower
I have had the same problem recently. Make sure you check phase to ground voltage not just phase to phase. I had a whisper 100 that had the exact symptom and I replaced the controller with one of the new Luminous RE units. The old controller actually checked out fine on a known good turbine! Waiting on an upper casting assy now. One of the windings is apparently shorted Jeremy All Solar Penrose CO Sent by Jeremy's iPhone. Sorry for typos and shorthand! It was shortly after a severe lightning storm so the assumption was that the controller got fried. The wind turbine would not spin, it was as if the brake was on - if you know the Whisper, the brake is electrical, basically a shorting of the three phases. When the turbine was disconnected from the controller it would spin up and produce voltage at the leads. So the controller was replaced with a Clipper and Classic and the same problem still exists. I have resisted pulling the turbine down as it is a complicated sidehill installation but it looks like it will have to be done. Before I do that I thought I'd throw this out into the Wrenches community to see if anyone could offer suggestions. My conclusion is that there is some kind of short in the electronics in the turbine that only shows up when it is under load, i.e. has a battery connection. Suggestions, ideas? If the turbine is fried I guess I'll be looking for another turbine that would work on the 80' tower installation already in place, I know SWWP has folded it's tent. Jeremy All Solar - Original Message - From: Allan Sindelar To: RE-wrenches Sent: Thursday, January 24, 2013 12:35 PM Subject: [RE-wrenches] 24V Module Query Wrenches, We have years of installing 36-cell (12V) and 72-cell (24V) modules for battery-based customers. Most of our systems are 24V or 48V nominal. Over the last few years, sources of conventionally-sized 72-cell modules have dried up - as cells have increased in size, most modules and most newer factory production lines have either gone to 60-cell (20V) modules, or 72 cells in 300+ watt ranges. It seems that the formerly common 72 cell, 24V modules in the 150-190 watt range, which are well-suited to integrating into existing systems, are no longer available. 60-cell modules in the common 220-250 watt range can't be added to an existing system unless run through a dedicated MPPT charge controller that can convert voltage, such as an FM, XW60, Classic or TriStar; the added cost of any of these controllers cancels out the low prices of the modules. Who continues to manufacture 72-cell modules? Which distributors carry them? I am aware of three options - are there more? - Sunpower makes one module in the 245 watt range that can be used negative ground, but it's very high efficiency (and with high Voc/Vmp as well) and very pricey; - Sanyo/Panasonic has 225-240 watt modules, but also quite premium and pricey; - Ameresco bought the rights to manufacture many former BP modules, and I think they make some. But we had to replace lots of failed BP modules in that size range, and are hesitant to use their technology, fearing that the problems may persist in the continued line. Hello Does anyone know if the One Stop Cop shop in Colorado Springs still repairs inverters? I just spoke with a client who may need an AC board for an SW. Maybe best to just upgrade him to an OB! The SW will start the genny automatically, but he must stop it manually. (AC board has the relays correct?). He has an Onan genset, which sounds like it may be 3 Or 4 wire start. Also thought of maybe a Solar Converters auto gen start module or equivelant so he could still use the inverter, as is. Any recommendations would be helpful. The inverter may have a higher pass through rating to support the loads and so is likely the reason a 60 Amp breaker is specified. The pass through rating is typically based on the size of the isolation relay and is usually higher than the inverter's continuous power rating. Re: [RE-wrenches] Magnum MS 4448 AE issues
We have installed 3 Systreams in off grid settings with the Whisper 500 DC dump load (from SWWP) with good results. Used 2 Morningstar TS 60's, one set a little lower, as a secondary diversion (per code) in case the other fails. I have an SW Plus set up this way at our office, and the others use VFX inverters. All with OB transformers and the Skystream AC coupled of course. DC dumping with the Tristar is modulated and does not affect the AC at all. My Skystream has been modified by SWWP to reduce the 5 min. delay to about 30 seconds, but they do not want to change the others. This is ok if you have PV as well. I would preface the following with the information that he is a very knowledgeable/hands on physicist (chair of the Physics department at Dalhousie U. in Halifax, as well as an intrepid sailor having sailed all over the world in 2 different sailboats he built himself). I mention this to explain that he is very capable and understands the inner workings of his equipment much better than most wrenches I know (and certainly me). About a year ago he installed a SkyStream 3.7 to add to the roughly 3 kW of solar on an FM80, and then a short time later disconnected himself from the grid. He immediately started having problems with the Skystream regularly disconnecting from his system and shutting down, then reconnecting and cycling off again, were as there hadn't been a problem while grid-tied. After much investigation and conversation with SW WindPower tech support and some software patches from them, things improved somewhat. But the regular disconnections continued. Since then he has spent a great deal of time on the phone with Magnum's tech support but they have not been able to answer his more technical questions. The best they've offered is to have him send the inverter in, but of course that is now not practical. The basic problem seems to be the voltage regulation during loading and unloading of the inverter (even with medium sized loads). He tried to get an internal wiring diagram and/or service manual from Magnum with no luck. He has not been able to get through to any engineers that would be able to answer his more technical questions. He is trying to figure out if there are any internal set points that he can adjust or components that can use tweaking. He has looked at the wave form with a scope and would like to see if there are changes that he can make to the electronics to allow for better regulation. Here is what he has written me: Here is my report on the Magnum MS4448AE observing the AC output with a Fluke 189, measuring the max and min values in slow mode (not it's fast mode which would look at spikes for short times): I have checked several water heater elements running on 240 V (they are between 2000 and 2500 Watts - immersion heaters). When switching any one of them on, the voltage drops from around 240V to 197 V on average, sometimes going as low as 170 V. These are serious drops, the lights dim drastically and the radio may cut out for .5 s or so! Switching the thermal heaters off again raise the output voltage to 271 V sometimes reaching 282 V. The battery bank during those test were at 53 V at the DC input side of the inverter, measured at the inverter. The voltage drop for the DC was around 1 V DC. The battery bank is a 800 AH (Rolls S530) with 2/0 copper cables 5 - 6 ft inverter cables. We had great wind yesterday and I had to switch to the hock up the diversion load to 240 V so it would draw 2.5 kW. Needless to say it stalled the windmill each time my outback kicked on the diversion load. I had to leave the windmill off during the day. When I run the heating element on 120 V (and therefore 625 W) it works beautiful if the wind isn't too strong. Obviously the inverter handles 625 W quite well! He is also thinking about replacing the inverter with a newer split phase inverter (an XW or a Radian). If anyone has an opinion about which might work for him, I'd appreciate any feedback. I am not a fan of Xantrex, although I know some on the list really like the XW. If anyone has any ideas of either a fix or someone we can get through to at Magnum, that would be a great help. Re: [RE-wrenches] Charge Rate (Hot Trojan Batteries)
and connection. Dedicated wiring is recommended ü Check temperature sensor. It shall be well positioned, typically in the middle of the battery bank at the warmest point. ü Check if air circulation between the battery units. ü Check if adequate air ventilation of the battery room. o Battery issues: ü C/20 charging rate is too high (see above) ü How old are the batteries? Ageing batteries will face micro-shorts that will decrease the battery turnaround efficiency over time that translates in higher temperature generation. Typically the battery temperature range is about 20oF above ambient temperature, and typical min and max limit are -4°F to 113°F. See here: http://www.trojanbatteryre.com/PDF/Signature_Trojan_ProductLineSheet.pdf 165°F is way too high and will damage the units ü Maybe you are facing one or more shorted units: check the voltage and it will quickly indicate if a unit is shorted. Shorted units will generate heat and will jeopardize the charging of other units. Remove shorted units and consult tech support your charger supplier if possible to reconfigure of your battery bank with fewer units, configured at a lower battery bank voltage, using same voltage settings recommended by Trojan Battery Company. Typically 1 to 3 units less would be acceptable, depending the charger manufacturer settings. ü Maybe you are facing sulfated batteries, resulting from low charging, thus resulting in lower overall turnaround efficiency. This will heat some healthier units of the battery bank, accelerating corrosion damages. The max temperature acceptable being 113°F, please consult Trojan Tech Support: http://www.trojanbatteryre.com/Tech_Support/Tech_Support.html?tab=0#TabbedPanels1#top ü Please deal directly off-Wrenches list, with Trojan Tech Support for better fine tune resolution: http://www.trojanbatteryre.com/Tech_Support/Tech_Support.html?tab=0#TabbedPanels1#top I hope this help, John John F. Re: [RE-wrenches] Kohler Generator Issues
Jeff, check out Gillette Generators. Prime power warranty. and 'ok with inverter' Jeremy - Original Message - From: Jeff Yago jry...@netscape.com To: RE-wrenches re-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Sent: Monday, March 29, 2010 8:53 AM Subject: Re: [RE-wrenches] Kohler Generator Issues Although we have specified and included Kohler RES models in all our off-grid and battery based solar projects for over 15 years, we have seen a real decline in the suitability of the Kohler line in the past few years for use in solar/battery/generator applications. First they killed off the 1800 RPM units under 15 kW. We had many older systems that would not work when we replaced an aging 1800 RPM unit with their same kW size new 3600 RPM units, which made inverters go nuts with under-voltage and over-current errors. Then several years ago they got rid of the battery charging alternator or whatever that re-charged the battery when the generator was running as a way to reduce costs, so now the only way to keep the battery charged was to plug in a full time float charger. This 24/7 electrical load is not a good idea for smaller off-grid systems and requires another set of wires out to the generator to supply this outlet. Finally, Kohler added a diagnostic electronics panel that adds another 24/7 electrical load. We kill this off during installation on any off-grid application as we cannot justify this 24/7 standby load. There is a software switch to do this, but its not easy to find in the instructions. Funny thing was the other day I received a call from the main Kohler factory about some marketing issues and I finally let loose with the above rant. I really complained that so far they have done everything they could NOT to serve this very large and growing off-grid market, and I pointed out that most of their recent design improvements made their generators LESS suitable for this market, not better. This guy was absolutely dumb-struck, and it appears to me that they have made no effort to understand this market. Their more recent efforts to void warranties is just another reason to look for a different generator supplier. Has anyone on this list had any contact from Kohler central office about finding out what features this industry needs? The guy I talked with may be just blowing smoke, but he promised to have a followup call in next few weeks to learn more about what they can do. According to him, he thinks they can add a software switch in the programming for little or no cost like on/grid - off/grid that we could access during setup that would adjust generator parameters and standby losses when used in an inverter-battery application. In case he really does followup, are there any other rants I could include from you guys that have been a problem for you when using Kohler generators. I will assume we are limiting this to their non-water cooled units under 15 kW. While ranting on generators, the main reason we liked to use Kohler was the easy 2-wire start/stop connections you can connect to the aux relay in most inverters, while many other generator brands were not easy to remote start from an inverter or required multi-step starting relays. Has this changed, and are there now other brands of generators in the 8 to 15 kW range that work well for backup of solar/battery charging applications and the manufacturer does not have warranty issues when used in off-grid applications? How much power do you have to put into the grid? The question if you need back up power what is it for? if it is simple plug loads or lighting you might serve the customer well with single phase backup. If you need 3-phase back-up I find it hard to accept that they need it in one box. The Xantrex is three seperate inverters on one board that looks like 1 box. The three 120 volt units make 120/208 three phase. If you have 120/240 three phase you have Delta, high leg. Other combinations of three phase are possible, but more rare. I am old and I have never seen a problem of 3 phase imbalance if I stay within 20% of the panel rating. In fact I have seen single phase loads that will imbalance more than 20% not cause a problem. The problem of imbalance is similar to what occurs with single phase and changed inverter rules to requireing a ground reference on 240 volt inverters. This problem is that the neutral will get pushed off center voltage wise, I usually demonstrate this in my class. YOu can not cause significat imbalance with three 120 volt inverters, but you could woty the old 208 no neutral inverters. Darryl --- On Tue, 2/16/10, All Solar Inc. I don't know if this qualifies as the wisdom you were asking for, Marco, but here's my take on the topic: I am in favor of being fair and supportive with employees. To a fault. Outside salespeople are different animals and may need to be treated differently than other employees. More often than not, in my experience, outside salespeople with commission-based compensation are the biggest Me First SOBs in the business... Regardless of whatever business or industry it is. If they are a Pure Salesperson, they came from another industry where they had the same attitudes and practices. They do whatever it takes to get their commissions and they snake around in any manner possible to ensure somebody else deals with all the headaches they cause. A commissioned salesperson is a hired gun by nature. Quite often they have little to no loyalty to the employer or the customer. If things get slow or they're not making the $$$ they thought they would, or they simply get bored, they move on. But not before they get everything they can from you. If you (the employer) are paying for their cell phone, 3G wireless, car, laptop, etc., they will use all of them in their quest to find their next job. Seen it happen more than once. I can think of precious few individuals who are the exception. That being said, I still believe in treating them fairly and honestly. After all, these are the folks who get your company in the door with your customers. They would tell you that you don't have a business if not for them. Depending on your business model, this may be true to some extent. It may also be completely untrue and, if it is, you need to adjust their attitude. In answer to Marco's question about commission payments for expansion projects, I believe several factors come into play... Some of which have been mentioned by others and some have not. For the edification of Mainlanders, I think it is important to understand that Hawaii's current incentive structure favors expansion of PV systems over multiple years. Year One plus Year Two systems equal a total project. Asking the question of how best to deal with commissions in this environment is fundamentally different from asking it in other regions. Keep that in the back of your head. For the purpose of general evaluation, regardless of the region, I would first address the question by asking if this is an infrequent situation vs. one which is common or expected to be common? In the case of the Aloha state, I would check the common box. This creates the need for a company policy on the matter vs. dealing with it on a case-by-case basis. In areas where actual future expansion is rare, I'd say the salesperson's compensation should be what it always is. If your company did the original installation, I might even recommend an extra spiff. Times are tight. Going back and mining your existing customer base is good business. So Let's make a Company Policy. Since it appears that commission-based-on-actual-project-profitability is not what we're doing, we need to address three scenarios: Scenario 1: Your company did not do the original install. Scenario 2: Your company did the original install and this salesperson is the orginal salesperson. Scenario 3: Your company did the original install and this salesperson was not the original salesperson. Scenario 1 is easy. They deserve full pop.
