Re: [RE-wrenches] Magnum System - Discharged Battery Bank

2014-12-17 Thread All Solar, Inc.
How about the possibility of the batteries being overcharged, thus a ruined
battery bank?
I believe magnum recommends a diversion load controller with a dump load and
using the frequency shift as a back up.

[RE-wrenches] LBX with Magnum?

2014-11-08 Thread All Solar, Inc.

Greetings,
I'm trying to set up a magnum inverter to reconnect after a low battery cut out
condition at a higher voltage than is presently set.
Basically like the old SW inverters LBX mode. Magnum tech-support thought using
the advanced remote control can work but I'm not seeing that adjustable setting
in any of the menus. I would call it low battery cut in.
There is no AC input to this inverter so we want the batteries to recharge with
the PV system until it gets to a higher voltage, say 55 V before the inverter
turns back on.
We also have a midnight charge controller on board but I'm trying to use the
inverter features first.

We did one and it seems to work fine. We AC coupled a pair of Sunny Islands
to a Fronius IG Plus 10.0-1 UNI. There might be a problem if you are using a
Radian with the Fronius.

At 04:44 PM 4/16/2014, you wrote:

Hello wrenches,

Has anyone had good success AC coupling with Fronius Inverters? Â If so,
what equipment did you use? Â Was this with an IG or an IG Plus?

I have had quite a few people lately with Fronius Inverters that would like
a backup solution and I'm not comfortable AC coupling these, but could
potentially be persuaded.

Thanks

Geocell is great stuff.
I installed tubular skylights for years, and that's what the manufacturer

Re: [RE-wrenches] Bergey Excel 1 wind generator issues

2014-02-19 Thread All Solar, Inc.
Ray,
Are you referring to Midnite's wind turbine control box, which is what comes
with the Bergey?
It does not include any diversion for slowing the turbine. I questioned why
they did not use the clipper, but did not really get an answer. We have
installed 2 of the Excel 1s in the last 6 months with no problems. I also
believe the clipper would take care of it, just have no experience with it yet.

Sounds like you have checked everything. How about the wiring coming from the
brush holder? Make sure none of them have been chaffed near the pivot. Of
course the brushes might show some arcing too if there is an intermittent
short. If you need an upper casting, complete with stator and armature,
contact me off list. Also what is the resistance phase to phase of the armature?

[RE-wrenches] GFCI generator outlet

2013-10-13 Thread All Solar, Inc.
Wrenches
I recently visited a site where their backup gen has GFCI outlets used for
input to the FX inverter.
They finally tried to charge the batteries, and it trips the GFCI.
As a test I replaced it with a standard outlet and it works fine.
I have never used a gen with GFCIs, In fact most are hard wired.
Is the outlet the problem or is there really a ground fault?
Is there a safety issue?
I'm pretty sure the neutral and ground are bonded at the mains panel.

Thanks

[RE-wrenches] Wind Turbine recommendations; 24v battery charging

2013-08-15 Thread All Solar, Inc.
Hi all!

Can I please get your recommendations for a turbine upgrade.

Currently there is a 1.5" tower we can utilize. There was a Lakota on site but
I have it on the bench and will not recommend fixing it or replacing it with
the like.

So, 3 phase wiring is in place.

P.S. I don't think the tower would support a Bergey XL.1 which would be my
choice given the Whisper's ordeal.

[RE-wrenches] Oil Heating / Solar Thermal

2013-06-07 Thread All Solar, Inc.
Thermal Wrenches,
Has anyone ever heated an oil tank with thermal collectors?
Specifically, I wonder if the oil itself can be pumped through the collectors (
drainback or otherwise )
This is for an asphalt batch plant.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Nuetral - Ground Bond. Was- Outback wave form

2013-06-07 Thread All Solar, Inc.
I found out that the appliance will work fine from an extension cord with a
portable generator.
The appliance will not even work however when the backup gen is running and
transfering through the inverters.
Outback T.S. suggested to check the Neutral to ground bond so that is the next
step. Also tried to set the Power Save levels the same (stacked pair)

Wrenches,

While the addition of a capacitor may resolve issues associated with
various
inverter/appliance/motor combinations, please make sure the
capacitor(s) get
switched OUT of the circuit (disconnected) when the load itself is
disconnected.

Failure to do so could under some circumstances cause the inverter
control-loop
circuitry to go unstable, leading to unpredictable inverter operation,
and possible
damage/failure in the power system. Disconnecting the capacitor with
the load
alleviate this possibility.

We experience issues like this from time to time. PF seems to be the
culprit. Have you measured it or looked at the waveform yet? How an inverter
deals with PF seems to vary broadly. For example, the Splendide XC2100
washer/dryer will not work on a Magnum Energy and a few other sine wave
inverters. However, it will run on a low cost GoPower or Samlex sine wave
inverter. Below is a scope trace of voltage/current of the Magnum inverter &
Splendide washer. Upper trace is voltage

By adding a 50uF run capacitor inline, it somewhat tames the current
phase and the sine wave so the Magnum can operate the washer.

[RE-wrenches] AC Coupling Situation

2013-03-18 Thread Jeremy Rodriguez- All Solar Inc.
Wrenches,
Here is my situation: GT string inverter - 3 strings of mods, 10KW DC. We need
to reduce the PV when the grid is down as to not overload the AC coupled
inverters.
Is there a good way to limit PV input like shunt off some power or short part
of the array? (part)
I was first thinking of dropping off 2 of the three strings, but that would not
leave enough input for the critical loads.
Has anyone done such a thing?

[RE-wrenches] Relay for excess PV/ AC coupling

2013-03-06 Thread All Solar, Inc.
Wrenches,
I have been searching here with little luck.
I am in need of a relay. Ideally, 120vac coil with 600vdc rated contacts. I
am trying to limit the input to a GT inverter an AC coupled sysetm. We need to
drop off two strings to the inverter when the grid is down, thus limiting the
output of the inverter.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Conductor Sizing for Supply Side Connection

2013-02-27 Thread All Solar, Inc.
There is an exception in NEC2011 regarding the point of connection. This may
not apply, but you could avoid the supply side. 4500W / 240V = 18.75 x 1.25 =
23.4A, well under the 120% rule. reference 705.12(D)(2)

  Wrenches,

On an upcoming job we have a Xantrex XW4548 interconnecting with a 200A
service, and I'd very much appreciate some advice if y'all are willing.

Since the inverter output OCPD is required to be 60A we are looking at a
supply side connection, and I have two questions:

  1. Before the point of interconnection the inverter output circuit will
first pass through the XW Power Distribution Panel and inverter bypass, which
is essentially a 60A breaker. The service disconnect for the supply side
connection will also be fused at 60A. Does the 120% rule apply to the
conductor between these two OCPDs? Or since this is a supply side connection
in accordance with 690.64(A), 690.64(B)(2) will not apply? [this AHJ is on the
2008 NEC]

  2. Can anyone recommend a reliable insulation piercing tap connector?
Or would you recommend something else entirely for a residential supply side
connection?

  Thanks in advance,

  Wrenches,
We have years of installing 36-cell (12V) and 72-cell (24V) modules for
battery-based customers. Most of our systems are 24V or 48V nominal. Over the
last few years, sources of conventionally-sized 72-cell modules have dried up -
as cells have increased in size, most modules and most newer factory production
lines have either gone to 60-cell (20V) modules, or 72 cells in 300+ watt
ranges. It seems that the formerly common 72 cell, 24V modules in the 150-190
watt range, which are well-suited to integrating into existing systems, are no
longer available.

60-cell modules in the common 220-250 watt range can't be added to an
existing system unless run through a dedicated MPPT charge controller that can
convert voltage, such as an FM, XW60, Classic or TriStar; the added cost of any
of these controllers cancels out the low prices of the modules.

Who continues to manufacture 72-cell modules? Which distributors carry them?
I am aware of three options - are there more?
  - Sunpower makes one module in the 245 watt range that can be used
negative ground, but it's very high efficiency (and with high Voc/Vmp as well)
and very pricey;
  - Sanyo/Panasonic has 225-240 watt modules, but also quite premium and
pricey;
  - Ameresco bought the rights to manufacture many former BP modules, and I
think they make some. But we had to replace lots of failed BP modules in that
size range, and are hesitant to use their technology, fearing that the problems
may persist in the continued line.

Thank you for any discussion and recommendations.

[RE-wrenches] Battery Trays and the NEC

2013-01-12 Thread Jeremy Rodriguez- All Solar Inc.
Hi
I have an inspector requesting info on Surrette 5000 series batteries. I have
told him they are dual container and that there is not a listed enclosure for
them. In fact I see no mention in the code book about requirement for a listed
enclosure, only that the tray must be able to resist acid.
Since they are dual container, will there ever be a chance of leakage?
Maybe someone has some documentation on this. Surrette Rep?

Thanks

[RE-wrenches] Trace Parts - colorado

2013-01-09 Thread Jeremy Rodriguez- All Solar Inc.
Hello
Does anyone know if the One Stop Cop shop in Colorado Springs still repairs
inverters? I just spoke with a client who may need an AC board for an SW.
Maybe best to just upgrade him to an OB! The SW will start the genny
automatically, but he must stop it manually. (AC board has the relays
correct?). He has an Onan genset, which sounds like it may be 3 Or 4 wire
start. Also thought of maybe a Solar Converters auto gen start module or
equivelant so he could still use the inverter, as is. Any recommendations would
be helpful.

Jeremy:

31.25 is the minimum allowable Ampacity (25 Amps continuous) so a 35 Amp
breaker would be the minimum size per Code.
The inverter may have a higher "pass through rating" to support the loads and
so is likely the reason a 60 Amp breaker is specified.
The pass through rating is typically based on the size of the isolation relay
and is usually higher than the inverter's continuous power rating.

Wrenches,
Since the XW6048 calls for a 60A breaker to feed the inverter input and we are
connecting back to the load side of a 200A panel is this correct.
6000÷240=25X1.25=31.25A. We cannot exceed a 30A breaker? Help me understand

Re: [RE-wrenches] Magnum MS 4448 AE issues

2012-12-23 Thread Jeremy Rodriguez- All Solar Inc.
We have installed 3 Systreams in off grid settings with the Whisper 500 DC dump
load (from SWWP) with good results. Used 2 Morningstar TS 60's, one set a
little lower, as a secondary diversion (per code) in case the other fails. I
have an SW Plus set up this way at our office, and the others use VFX
inverters. All with OB transformers and the Skystream AC coupled of course.
DC dumping with the Tristar is modulated and does not affect the AC at all.
My Skystream has been modified by SWWP to reduce the 5 min. delay to about 30
seconds, but they do not want to change the others. This is ok if you have PV
as well.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Magnum MS 4448 AE issues

Hi All,

I am trying to help my brother-in-law figure out if he can continue using
his Magnum MS 4448 AE in his now off-grid home in Nova Scotia which we
installed about 3 years ago as at the time a battery backup inverter. I
would preface the following with the information that he is a very
knowledgeable/hands on physicist (chair of the Physics department at
Dalhousie U. in Halifax, as well as an intrepid sailor having sailed all
over the world in 2 different sailboats he built himself). I mention this
to explain that he is very capable and understands the inner workings of
his equipment much better than most wrenches I know (and certainly me).

About a year ago he installed a SkyStream 3.7 to add to the roughly 3 kW
of solar on an FM80, and then a short time later disconnected himself from
the grid. He immediately started having problems with the Skystream
regularly disconnecting from his system and shutting down, then
reconnecting and cycling off again, were as there hadn't been a problem
while grid-tied. After much investigation and conversation with SW
WindPower tech support and some software patches from them, things
improved somewhat. But the regular disconnections continued.

Since then he has spent a great deal of time on the phone with Magnum's
tech support but they have not been able to answer his more technical
questions. The best they've offered is to have him send the inverter in,
but of course that is now not practical.

The basic problem seems to be the voltage regulation during loading and
unloading of the inverter (even with medium sized loads). He tried to get
an internal wiring diagram and/or service manual from Magnum with no luck.
He has not been able to get through to any engineers that would be able
to answer his more technical questions. He is trying to figure out if
there are any internal set points that he can adjust or components that
can use tweaking. He has looked at the wave form with a scope and would
like to see if there are changes that he can make to the electronics to
allow for better regulation.

Here is what he has written me:

"Here is my report on the Magnum MS4448AE observing the AC output with a
Fluke 189, measuring the max and min values in slow mode (not it's fast
mode which would look at spikes for short times):

I have checked several water heater elements running on 240 V (they are
between 2000 and 2500 Watts - immersion heaters). When switching any one
of them on, the voltage drops from around 240V to 197 V on average,
sometimes going as low as 170 V. These are serious drops, the lights dim
drastically and the radio may cut out for .5 s or so! Switching the
thermal heaters off again raise the output voltage to 271 V sometimes
reaching 282 V.

The battery bank during those test were at 53 V at the DC input side of
the inverter, measured at the inverter. The voltage drop for the DC was
around 1 V DC. The battery bank is a 800 AH (Rolls S530) with 2/0 copper
cables 5 - 6 ft inverter cables.

We had great wind yesterday and I had to switch to the hock up the
diversion load to 240 V so it would draw 2.5 kW. Needless to say it
stalled the windmill each time my outback kicked on the diversion load. I
had to leave the windmill off during the day. When I run the heating
element on 120 V (and therefore 625 W) it works beautiful if the wind
isn't too strong. Obviously the inverter handles 625 W quite well!"

He is also thinking about replacing the inverter with a newer split phase
inverter (an XW or a Radian). If anyone has an opinion about which might
work for him, I'd appreciate any feedback. I am not a fan of Xantrex,
although I know some on the list really like the XW. If anyone has any
ideas of either a fix or someone we can get through to at Magnum, that
would be a great help.

Thanks,
Howie

2012-10-07 Thread Jeremy Rodriguez- All Solar Inc.
Anyone know of a reliable 48vdc timer to control a well pump? Pump will be a
Grundfos SQ 240VAC.
The idea is to limit the run time to prevent over discharge of the battery
bank. The only charging source for now will be wind power, and the wind gen
requires AC voltage to connect. I'm concerned that the batteries may discharge,
inverter (VFX 3648) shut down, and we loose input from the turbine.
May be something else that works too. Right ??

Re: [RE-wrenches] Charge Rate (Hot Trojan Batteries)

2012-04-03 Thread All Solar, Inc.
With 5 strings installed, I figured the charge rate to be about 3.3% (of C20
rate) for 5 years or so. Actually since it was installed in 2002, and now on
its second set of batteries.
We added some PV and an MX60 a year ago, and now this. I think he had heavily
sulfated batteries which eventually led to shorted cells. ?

There are a lot of forums and circles where C/20 refers to the capacity
divided by 20, or 5% of the battery capacity. This may be the more informal
interpretation of the term, but you will find many examples where people
consider C/20 to be 5% of the capacity (wrong or right). For example, look at
the most frequently accessed deep cycle charging FAQ on the Internet:
http://www.windsun.com/Batteries/Battery_FAQ.htm

To be clear perhaps we should just use plain English and say “the recommended
charging rate is 10-15% of the capacity of the battery at the 20 hour discharge
rate.”

  Wrenches,
I attended John DeBoever's Friday afternoon presentation on battery
technology and care at the NABCEP Continuing Education conference this past
weekend. It quickly became clear to me that John seriously knows his batteries,
at all levels: chemistry, physics, RE use and care, etc. It was an
advanced-level presentation, and I learned a lot.

  The first thing John told us was that English is not his native language;
he's a Belgian raised in South Africa (and more that I didn't catch). He was
bursting with knowledge and good information, but occasionally we in his class
would back him up to better explain a point.

In short, I think he will be a real asset to the Wrenches list as a
manufacturer's representative. And occasionally there will be something
confusing, such as what just happened here. I too wondered about C20 versus
C/20. I appreciate that he quickly cleared up the confusion, and look forward
to learning quite a bit from his posts about battery issues.

There must be some confusion here about the charging rate. C/20 refers to
capacity divided by 20, so in the case of a 325aH battery (capacity @ the 20
hour discharge rate) we’re talking about charging at a 16.25 amp rate. I’m sure
John is not referring to a maximum rate of 10-15% of 16.25 amps, but 10-15% of
the 325aH capacity.

You could almost run a 22 v nominal system, if you used 2 v cells. Charge
controllers like the FM60 and the Classic have enough adjustment in the bulk/
float settings to make it work, and that would be closer to the 20 - 28 v dc
window you're looking for. (20 v would be comparable to 10.9 on a 12 v system
or complete discharge, while 28v would be 15.3 v on a 12v system, plenty of
room to EQ)
However there are a lot of comm systems that have been running off grid for
decades, so I really think you just need to take another look at the required
specs. Solar Converters in Canada make a voltage regulator that will stabilize
a battery voltage, as well as up and down DC to DC converters.
Also, I'm up in Denver, and don't mind driving (buy my gas) if you ever need
any help.

Subject: Re: [RE-wrenches] Kohler Generator Issues

Although we have specified and included Kohler RES models in all our
off-grid and battery based solar projects for over 15 years, we have seen
a real decline in the suitability of the Kohler line in the past few years
for use in solar/battery/generator applications. First they killed off
the 1800 RPM units under 15 kW. We had many older systems that would not
work when we replaced an aging 1800 RPM unit with their same kW size new
3600 RPM units, which made inverters go nuts with under-voltage and
over-current errors.

Then several years ago they got rid of the battery charging alternator or
whatever that re-charged the battery when the generator was running as a
way to reduce costs, so now the only way to keep the battery charged was
to plug in a full time float charger. This 24/7 electrical load is not a
good idea for smaller off-grid systems and requires another set of wires
out to the generator to supply this outlet. Finally, Kohler added a
diagnostic electronics panel that adds another 24/7 electrical load. We
"kill" this off during installation on any off-grid application as we
cannot justify this 24/7 standby load. There is a software switch to do
this, but its not easy to find in the instructions.

Funny thing was the other day I received a call from the main Kohler
factory about some marketing issues and I finally let loose with the above
rant. I really complained that so far they have done everything they
could NOT to serve this very large and growing off-grid market, and I
pointed out that most of their recent design "improvements" made their
generators LESS suitable for this market, not better. This guy was
absolutely dumb-struck, and it appears to me that they have made no effort
to understand this market. Their more recent efforts to void warranties
is just another reason to look for a different generator supplier.

Has anyone on this list had any contact from Kohler central office about
finding out what features this industry needs? The guy I talked with may
be just blowing smoke, but he promised to have a followup call in next few
weeks to learn more about what they can do. According to him, he thinks
they can add a software "switch" in the programming for little or no cost
like "on/grid - off/grid" that we could access during setup that would
adjust generator parameters and standby losses when used in an
inverter-battery application. In case he really does followup, are there
any other rants I could include from you guys that have been a problem for
you when using Kohler generators. I will assume we are limiting this to
their non-water cooled units under 15 kW.

While ranting on generators, the main reason we liked to use Kohler was
the easy 2-wire start/stop connections you can connect to the aux relay in
most inverters, while many other generator brands were not easy to remote
start from an inverter or required multi-step starting relays. Has this
changed, and are there now other brands of generators in the 8 to 15 kW
range that work well for backup of solar/battery charging applications and
the manufacturer does not have warranty issues when used in off-grid
applications?

Thanks,

Jeff Yago

Does anyone have any experience with using AFCI breakers
with modified waveform inverters? I've got a customer
building a new weekend home that thinks he wants a modified
waveform inverter, but I don't know if the required AFCI
circuit breakers will work. A few years ago Xantrex
published a list of GFCIs that would work with their
modified waveform inverters. I haven't seen any such
info about the AFCI breakers. Thanks.

Yes. We were told this after selling a 12K RES to a client last year. A few
months later we were advised to tell our client to never mention that it would
be used in a off-grid situation after he had purchased the unit. It sure put
us in a weird spot. Although I protested, explaining that the application was
made known to the distributer before purchase, he claimed there was nothing he
could do. I have since avoided Kohler for a variety of reasons, but this being
quite a big one. It has been a real bummer. I was never given a real reason

If you have 120/208 you have WYE. How much power do you have to put into
the grid? The question if you need back up power what is it for? if it
is simple plug loads or lighting you might serve the customer well with
single phase backup. If you need 3-phase back-up I find it hard to accept
that they need it in one box. The Xantrex is three seperate inverters on
one board that looks like 1 box. The three 120 volt units make 120/208
three phase. If you have 120/240 three phase you have Delta, high leg.
Other combinations of three phase are possible, but more rare.

I am old and I have never seen a problem of 3 phase imbalance if I stay
within 20% of the panel rating. In fact I have seen single phase loads
that will imbalance more than 20% not cause a problem. The problem of
imbalance is similar to what occurs with single phase and changed inverter
rules to requireing a ground reference on 240 volt inverters. This
problem is that the neutral will get pushed off center voltage wise, I
usually demonstrate this in my class. YOu can not cause significat
imbalance with three 120 volt inverters, but you could woty the old 208 no
neutral inverters.

Could you not just use one 120V inverter? I've
connected single 120 volt
inverters (albeit not outback but I don't see why
not) to a 120/208 wye
without problems. You have to make sure the wires are
sized correctly (solar

limits your backed up loads to 120V (w/out a
transformer).

I do not know what is going
on at Outback, but unless they reduced the product
offering, they have the
capability. I have such a system.

Use 3 of their 120 volt
single phase inverters connected 3-phase WYE (120/208)
3 phase. Each
inverter is only a single phase, and you connect each
inverter to the
neutral and one phase, you program one to be the
Master, and the others to
be slaves on phase B and Phase C. When you lose
the grid, the Master
inverter starts its sine wave and it generates the
usual 60 Hz square wave
on the Outback Bus and the following slave units delays
the start of their
sin waves by the appropriate 120 degrees to generate 3
phases. Each
inverter picks up and makes 60 hz 3 phase.

One thing, besure to get
a rotation meter and check that you are generating
3-phase the same rotation
as the grid. Else you will have big problems. (motors
will reverse and you

Does the utility mean by "match" that they don't want the inverter output
transformed in any way?
Could you not just use one 120V inverter? I've connected single 120 volt
inverters (albeit not outback but I don't see why not) to a 120/208 wye without
problems. You have to make sure the wires are sized correctly (solar pro had a
recent article on unbalanced 3 phase wire sizing). This of course limits your
backed up loads to 120V (w/out a transformer).

Yes you would. I don't believe there is a single inverter that meets the
utility's wishes.

I do not know what is going on at Outback, but unless they reduced the
product offering, they have the capability. I have such a system.

Use 3 of their 120 volt single phase inverters connected 3-phase WYE
(120/208) 3 phase. Each inverter is only a single phase, and you connect each
inverter to the neutral and one phase, you program one to be the Master, and
the others to be slaves on phase B and Phase C. When you lose the grid, the
Master inverter starts its sine wave and it generates the usual 60 Hz square
wave on the Outback Bus and the following slave units delays the start of their
sin waves by the appropriate 120 degrees to generate 3 phases. Each inverter
picks up and makes 60 hz 3 phase.

One thing, besure to get a rotation meter and check that you are generating
3-phase the same rotation as the grid. Else you will have big problems. (motors
will reverse and you may fry the OB transfer relay)

Next time you call outback ask a tech if you can slave the GVFX to make 3
phase,

Anyone know of a system for Battery Backup that can also be grid tied for 3

Our local Utilitly Co. wants system voltage to match service voltage.

Every once in a while, there's a posting that's worth saving. This one goes
in the "Organizing your business" folder. Thanks Matt. With this much wisdom
available for free, what could I get if I bought you lunch and a beer?

On Thu, Feb 11, 2010 at 1:11 PM, Matt Lafferty wrote:

Is it OK to be chicken sh#$ with salespeople who are full of bull sh#$ ?

I don't know if this qualifies as the "wisdom" you were asking for, Marco,
but here's my take on the topic:

I am in favor of being fair and supportive with employees. To a fault.
Outside salespeople are different animals and may need to be treated
differently than other employees. More often than not, in my experience,
outside salespeople with commission-based compensation are the biggest "Me
First" SOBs in the business... Regardless of whatever business or industry
it is. If they are a Pure Salesperson, they came from another industry where
they had the same attitudes and practices. They do whatever it takes to get
their commissions and they snake around in any manner possible to ensure
somebody else deals with all the headaches they cause. A commissioned
salesperson is a hired gun by nature. Quite often they have little to no
loyalty to the employer or the customer. If things get slow or they're not
making the $$$ they thought they would, or they simply get bored, they move
on. But not before they get everything they can from you. If you (the
employer) are paying for their cell phone, 3G wireless, car, laptop, etc.,
they will use all of them in their quest to find their next job. Seen it
happen more than once.

I can think of precious few individuals who are the exception. That being
said, I still believe in treating them fairly and honestly. After all, these
are the folks who get your company in the door with your customers. They
would tell you that you don't have a business if not for them. Depending on
your business model, this may be true to some extent. It may also be
completely untrue and, if it is, you need to adjust their attitude.

In answer to Marco's question about commission payments for expansion
projects, I believe several factors come into play... Some of which have
been mentioned by others and some have not.

For the edification of Mainlanders, I think it is important to understand
that Hawaii's current incentive structure favors expansion of PV systems
over multiple years. Year One plus Year Two systems equal a total project.
Asking the question of how best to deal with commissions in this environment
is fundamentally different from asking it in other regions. Keep that in the
back of your head.

For the purpose of general evaluation, regardless of the region, I would
first address the question by asking if this is an infrequent situation vs.
one which is common or expected to be common? In the case of the Aloha
state, I would check the "common" box. This creates the need for a company
policy on the matter vs. dealing with it on a case-by-case basis. In areas
where actual future expansion is rare, I'd say the salesperson's
compensation should be what it always is. If your company did the original
installation, I might even recommend an extra spiff. Times are tight. Going
back and mining your existing customer base is good business.

So Let's make a Company Policy. Since it appears that
commission-based-on-actual-project-profitability is not what we're doing, we
need to address three scenarios:

Scenario 1: Your company did not do the original install.
Scenario 2: Your company did the original install and this salesperson is
the orginal salesperson.
Scenario 3: Your company did the original install and this salesperson was
not the original salesperson.

Scenario 1 is easy. They deserve full pop. Pay them like it was a
stand-alone job at whatever kW you're selling. Doesn't matter if they were
the original salesperson or not. If they were the original salesperson, buy
'em a beer, too. Then tell them to get back out there and keep bringing in
their old boss' customers! (Note of caution: In Scenario 1, pay close
attention to the job costs and adjust your prices upward if needed. When
calculating job costs, be sure to include a number that covers warranty and
service reserves. Following others onto a jobsite has potential downsides!)

The other two scenarios require a look at the actual compensation structure
and what the salesperson actually does for their paycheck. If less than 50%
