Hi all,

Changing the Gen Input mode to Support did the trick! Thanks for the advice!

[RE-wrenches] Outback Radian Generator Charging

2023-10-25 Thread Amos Post via RE-wrenches
Hello wrenches,

We just installed an GS8048a Radian build with Mate 3SL controller (no Optics).
We are having some with charging from the generator, as the generator charging
seems to be limited to about 4500Watts +/- (20amps AC) when charging through
the Radian. It is a Kohler 8.5RES generator and we have the AC input limit set
to 30amps and the Gen input set to 30amps. The house load is only about
200Watts when we are charging. The system is at 2200ft of elevation, but I
don’t know if that makes enough of a difference.
The Gen output voltage seems pretty good and holds around 234V-236V while
charging.

Any thoughts as to why it may be limiting would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Amos

Re: [RE-wrenches] Sol-Ark/Fortress charging issue

2022-11-18 Thread Amos Post via RE-wrenches
Howie,

Just to add, I have noticed this type of behavior with a Solark system with AGM
batteries. It was very clear that the Solark was limiting the charge to the
batteries (about 35-40AmpsDC) when the generator was running, but not clear as
to why. This happened after a recent firmware update (maybe 2 months ago) on a
Solark 12K Outdoor. The Solark tech looks things over, Enabled the “Activate
Battery” setting (I do not know what this does), and he may have changed
something else but I don’t think so. Anyways after that it started charging at
a higher rate again and I believe has been good since.

We also have had some ongoing trouble with the Generator turning on and turning
off when it’s supposed to…and wishing their was more customization with the Gen
settings, as I know others have mentioned before.

Best,
Amos

[RE-wrenches] Old Solar Modules

2022-09-12 Thread Amos Post via RE-wrenches
Hi all,

I have a few old modules I am trying to date best I can. One is an Photowatt
(Arco?) 55Watt silver frame yellow backsheet, one is a Solarex 53Watt silver
frame grey back sheet, and one Arco 50Watt black frame black back sheet.
Looking for help with dates and if anyone knows of good websites for looking up
specs and/or dates on these older modules?

Thanks,
Amos

Re: [RE-wrenches] Has anyone ever had one of his customers get a note from SolarEdge like this one?

2022-08-19 Thread Amos Post via RE-wrenches
I know everybody is experiencing supply chain problems and it’s over my head as
to what’s going on…

I have also recently had poor support from Solaredge. Support was good
several years back when the company was young, but it’s been getting worse and
worse the last couple of years.

We have an 11.4KW where the customer is now on his 4th inverter in 4 years. We
are still waiting for a replacement after 6 weeks.

We also recently had a SE6k stop producing. SE did a firmware update on day
one, and that didn’t help. Day #2 we did a “load test”, by turning off all of
the house AC loads and leaving just the inverter on (per SE recommendation),
still no dice. Day #3 I called in and they are going to send a replacement but
no concrete timeframe.

This is very frustrating for customers and us as installers when our customers
have to wait this long for a replacement, especially during prime producing
days of summer. Somehow they are able to maintain a good stock price and some
inventory at local distributors(but not in their warranty department).
Solaredge’s customer support needs to step up a notch (or two) if they are
going to make it through this.

The long wait times and level 1 techs are also not so good.

I will second with 4-5 per year. The Kohlers are what we use currently also in
the 8-14KW range for off-grid (mostly the 14KW size).

Re: [RE-wrenches] PAE series surge capacity/ power factor ?

2022-01-10 Thread Amos Post
I also have a new (7 month old) PAE system with 2-4448 Inverters (stacked) that
we are having some strange issues with. The most troublesome issue is the new
Rheem wall-hung LP instant water heater/boiler is throwing an Error Code 12
which is supposedly a “Flame Failure”. It’s a brand new installation with new
tanks and lines and the gas guys have doubled checked everything. We are now
wondering if it might be related to the power supply. The other indications
that it could be related are flickering lights, a 12V battery charger (AC plug
in type) that won’t work off inverter power (but will when plugged into the
genny, and I’m seeing a little bit of wondering in the Hz on my simple Exeltech
volt meter.

Magnum recommended a run capacitor on the boiler circuit. I installed that on
Friday and still had the error code come up 4 times over the weekend.

Any thoughts?

Best,
Amos

Thanks Larry,

This would be a 240V to 120V step down configuration correct? So the sub panel
would be 120V only?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Load imbalance issues with SolArk?

2021-02-03 Thread Amos Post
We have had this issue with a recent installation. It’s a new off-grid house
build, and so not many loads to speak of yet, except mainly power tools. The
Solark 12K will not start any of: portable air compressor, table saw, and
sometimes struggles with a miter saw, which are each 16amps or less at 120V,
but I have measured close to 50amps start up for the air compressor and table
saw. The air compressor and table saw are 1.5HP each. What helps is if the
motors are warmed up, or putting another load on the other leg to balance the
inverter’s output.

Was thinking we would install a couple of dedicated 120V outlets for
“high-current” 120V loads with a PSX-240, stepping down the inverter's 240 to
120. My understanding is this will solve the issue for starting these loads,
but not sure if we might run into issues with inbalance down the road... Would
be curious to know if there’s another way to balance all of the house loads
using the PSX-240?..

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase intermittent breaker trippjng

2020-06-03 Thread Amos Post
I was just at a site last week where the Enphase branch circuit breaker,
outside utility disconnect breaker, and feed breaker in the main panel all
tripped simultaneously, and it happened about 1 hour before I showed up onsite.
The customer said it had happened 1 other time last fall but that time it was
just the 1 branch circuit in the Enphase combiner panel. Interestingly the
customer mentioned that he had just washed off the panels, also about 1 hour
before I got there. I went on the roof and found that the installing
contractor had not put on the Enphase termination caps. 1 string was
wire-nutted with regular wire nuts and sitting on the roof, and the roof was
damp right there. This was a fairly flat roof. The other micro trunk cable was
just cut with no protection at all, tied to the rail…

[RE-wrenches] Fwd: Well Pump Sizing

2019-04-25 Thread Amos Post
I have an off-grid customer who is having problems with his 10 year+ old
1/2hp well pump. It is running and running at 900watts constant and hardly
building pressure and even caused the 250amp breaker on his single VFX3524
inverter to trip. He is running the pump at 240V off a x240 transformer
and thinking he might need to replace the pump and might want to go with a
larger 3/4hp pump for better performance and more future capacity. Does
anyone have experience running 3/4hp pumps on this setup? The pump is
approx. 200’ down in the well.
