[RE-wrenches] Metal Truss Roofs

2023-10-25 Thread James Rudolph via RE-wrenches
Aloha Wrenches,

I have a good for the group. Does anyone know a lag/fastener other than
EJOT that could be used to install PV to a home with metal trusses? To
complicate things the roof is tile and the decking is 1/2" ply.
We do have access to the attic, but in only half the house because of the
cathedral ceilings. I am thinking of reducing the array size and doing
through bolts that would have to be fastened from inside the attic.
Please let me know if anyone has an idea or solution here.

Good times.

Mahalo in advance.

[RE-wrenches] Maui wildfires fundraising

2023-08-16 Thread James Rudolph via RE-wrenches
Aloha Kakou Wrenches,
Please see this link and info below.
These guys are installing microgrids to help get basic services back online
and even internet/facetime with Starlink. If you can help in any way it
would be greatly appreciated.
My apologies if this is off-topic, but if you spent any time on the islands
you know how special this place and its people are.

Here is some info on this organization:

Footprint Project’s mission is to help build back greener after climate
disasters by mobilizing cleaner energy for communities in crisis. We are a
501(c)(3) non-profit disaster service organization that develops and
deploys solar generator networks to empower community resilience. We work
across the disaster management cycle to expand frontline access to cleaner
technologies and reduce fossil fuel use in the field. Since 2018, we’ve
mobilized solar microgrids to 20+ disaster response and recovery missions,
providing emergency power access to 25,000+ US citizens.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase ACM to rail mount plate

2023-02-23 Thread James Rudolph via RE-wrenches
Hey Mac,
If you have rails beneath the module wouldn't it be easier to mount an
inverter there with a bolt that fastens to rail?
William's solution looks great, but I thought to ask because this would be
cheaper and easier to wire.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Wires between arrays

2022-03-22 Thread James Rudolph
Maybe the inspector just didn't like the look of it for some reason?
Sometimes it's just easiest to ask the inspector what he would like to see.

If he didnt give the code reference it may be one of these items below:

* 2020 NEC*
Article 110.12 Workmanship ( the catch all of many issues for some
inspectors)
Article 300.2(B) Conductor & ground needs to be in the same raceway ( this
might be the one).
Article 352.12(C) Subject to physical damage (not likely?)
Article 352.28 Trimming and removing all rough edges ( maybe?)
Article 352.46 Bushings installed where conduit enters
box/enclosure-provided to protect conductors ( maybe?)

Please let us know how this one ends up.

Happy Trails & Good Luck.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SER wire inside a house

2021-11-08 Thread James Rudolph
Hi Jay,
It looks like it is approved in Article 338.10 (B)(4) if you comply with
all the requirements 334 part II ( Romex/NM/NMC).
I have only used it when connecting a exterior meter feeding an interior
sub panel. When I was trained, I was also told that SER cable needs to
terminate immediately after entering a dwelling ( usually in a panelboard).
If it is buried in a finished wall it looks like you are ok. This is how
most sub panels are connected in residential houses as well.

I hope this helps.

[RE-wrenches] Off Grid Food Truck

2021-08-19 Thread James Rudolph
Aloha Wrences,
I am trying to help some folks out here power up their 400w refrigerator
that is in their stationary food truck on the North Shore of Oahu.
I have a couple systems in mind ,but I am having a difficult time trying to
find someone to ship a kit out here. The suppliers on this island have not
been able to help with a small system that my client needs.
Does anyone have any experience shipping small off grid kits outside the 48
states , or have a contact/supplier that I can speak to?

Mahalo in advance.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Rapid Shutdown on Parking Garage

2020-08-28 Thread James Rudolph
Sounds like everything is a building in the 2020 code..

Here is the 2020 NEC Article 100 Definition:

   - *Building.* A structure that stands alone or that is separated from
   adjoining structures by firewalls.

The 2020 NEC Handbook has this note after the definition:

   - A building is generally considered to be a roofed or walled structure
that is intended for supporting or sheltering any use or occupancy.
However, a separate structure such as a pole, or billboard sign.or water
tower may also be considered to be a building. Definitions of the terms
fire walls and fire doors are the responsibilities of the building codes.
Generically, a fire wall may be defined as a wall that separates buildings
or subdivides a building to prevent the spread of fire and that has a fire
   resistance rating and structural stability.

[RE-wrenches] Buy American Act- compliant modules

2019-08-27 Thread James Rudolph
Aloha Wrenches,

Are any you able to get “Buy American Act” compliant modules, or know where
I can get them

I know there are a couple of different versions of the Buy America type
provisions. I believe they need to be 51% American components and
assembled here to be compliant with the “Buy American Act”.

Maybe Panasonic??

I am looking for 325kW of modules.

[RE-wrenches] 2014/2017 NEC Code Adoption

2019-04-02 Thread James Rudolph
Aloha Wrenches,
I am in the process of familiarizing myself with the upcoming code
adoptions here. Big Island has just adopted 2014 and Kauai (KIUC) just went
to the 2017 NEC.
Below is what I have gathered so far on the changes that would apply moving
forward.

   - 2014
  - My understanding is that most string inverters should take care of
  ground fault/arc fault compliance.
  - Need a disconnect within 10’ of rooftop array (exterior wiring).
 - Microinverters/optimizers automatically take care of this
 - For PV systems without backup, (i.e. Mauna Loa) can also just
install a string inverter within the boundary (no additional
cost other
than inverters in a bad location) which acts as the disconnect if the
inverter shuts down (i.e. turning the breaker off)
- For PV systems with backup, may need remote shutoff apart
from interconnection breaker
 - Otherwise a disconnecting combiner is needed
  - Labeling requirement changes
   - 2017
  - Changes the 10’ rule to 1’ on the disconnect
  - Also requires control of conductors in the array (optimizers or
  possibly string level disconnects)
  - Better/cheaper products are likely on the way, but I haven’t seen
  them yet

Have I missed some things?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Ibew is working to exclude C-46 contractor’s from installing Batteries.

2018-03-26 Thread James Rudolph
Aloha All,
Does anybody know the requirements for the C-46? I would assume if you
could qualify for that ( C-46) you could also qualify for a C-10 (C-13
Hawaii).
The full license gives one the ability to do anything, and this seems like
the way to go for versatility. "If you can't beat'em...join them."

*C-10 - Electrical Contractor*

An electrical contractor places, installs, erects or connects any
electrical wires, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduits,
solar photovoltaic cells or any part thereof, which generate, transmit,
transform or utilize electrical energy in any form or for any purpose.

What is needed to qualify:

Applicants are required to have 4 years’ experience to qualify to take the
exam. Experience must be at the journeyman, foreman or supervisor,
contractor, or as an owner-builder.

All applicants must have a working capital of at least $2,500. In addition,
all applicants must also file a bond with the Registrar in the amount of
$10,000.

*C-46 - Solar Contractor*

A solar contractor installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs thermal and
photovoltaic solar energy systems. A licensee classified in this section
shall not undertake or perform building or construction trades, crafts, or
skills, except when required to install a thermal or photovoltaic solar
energy system.

[RE-wrenches] AFCI Faults, SMA Inverters, Solectria RSB's, & RF Signals

2018-01-24 Thread James Rudolph
Aloha Wrenches,

I have a issue I would like to throw at the group.

We have a SMA 24000TL-US with a Solectria Rapid Shut Down Combiner.
The inverter keeps faulting the AFCI. We megged the strings, and checked all
connections on all components. So we are confident that the issue is not
related, or connected to all of that. We also swapped out the RSB.

I really can't disclose where the building is located because its military,
and most of their IT infrastructure happens to be in this building as well.

I know from research, and tech support that this happens sometimes with RF
signals,metal roofs,and communications antennas,etc.

SMA is suggesting we could re-run the stings so that we mitigate the
possibility that the strings are picking up this noise and triggering the
AFCI, or get clearance to disable that feature on the inverter.

Due to safety issues I'm sure the last option is not on the table.

We can also place any given sting on the combiner and it will work fine
with no faults up to four stings. Once we place more than four strings on
the combiner the inverter will fault.

Since we are still on the 2008 NEC in Hawaii this is our first run in with
the Rapid Shut Downs too. Maybe somehow this is tied into the issue?

Anyone have thoughts, or experience with this type of issue?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Does a Neutral Count as a CCC

2016-04-24 Thread James Rudolph
Straight from Mike Holt:

*Neutral Conductor*

The neutral conductor of a 3-wire single-phase 120/240V system, or 4-wire
3-phase 120/208V or 277/408V wye-connected system isn’t considered a
current-carrying conductor.

The neutral conductor of a 3-wire circuit from a 4-wire 3-phase 120/208V or
277V/480V wye-connected system is considered a current-carrying conductor.

When a 3-wire circuit is supplied from a 4-wire 3-[phase wye-connected
system, the neutral conductor carries approximately the same current as the
ungrounded conductors.

The neutral conductor of a 4-wire 3-phase circuit is considered a
current-carrying conductor where the major portion of the neutral load
consists of nonlinear loads. This is because harmonic currents will be
present in the neutral conductor, even if the loads on each of the 3 phases
are balanced.

Nonlinear loads supplied by 4-wire 3-phase 120/208V or 277/480V
wye-connected systems can produce unwanted and potentially hazardous
triplen harmonic currents (3rd, 9th, 15th, etc.) that can add on the
neutral conductor. To prevent fire or equipment damage from excessive
harmonic neutral current, the designer should consider increasing the size
of the neutral conductor or installing a separate neutral for each phase.
 see 210.4(A) FPN, 220.61 FPN 2, and 450.3 FPN 2.

Grounding (earthing) and bonding conductors aren’t considered current
carrying.

For individual dwelling units or one-family, two-family, and multifamily
dwellings, Table 310.15(B)(6) can be used to size 3-wire single-phase
120/240V service or feeder conductors (including neutral conductors) that
serve as the main power feeder. Feeder conductors are not required to have
an ampacity rating greater than the service conductors [215.2(A)(3)].

Warning: Table 310.15(B)(6) doesn’t apply to 3-wire single-phase 120/208V
systems, because the grounded neutral conductor in these systems carries
neutral current even when the load on the phases is balanced
[310.15(B)(4)(6)]. For more information on this topic, see 220.61(C)(1).

*Grounded Neutral Conductor Sizing.* Table 310.15(B)(6) can be used to size
the grounded neutral conductor of a 3-wire single-phase 120/240V service or
feeder that serves as the main power feeder, based on the feeder calculated
load in accordance with 220.61.

Because the grounded neutral service conductor is required to serve as the
effective ground-fault current path, it must be sized so that it can safely
carry the maximum fault current likely to be imposed on it [110.10 and
250.4(A)(5)]. This is accomplished by sizing the grounded neutral conductor
in accordance with Table 250.66, based on the total area of the largest
ungrounded conductor [250.24(C)(1)].

aloha and happy trails...

[RE-wrenches] Haticon Mid and Ends

2015-10-05 Thread James Rudolph
Aloha Wrenches,
Does anybody know where I can get Haticon mid and end clips? The lead time
with my distributors here is not feasible with my schedule.

I believe we need 40mm and 31 mm ends.

These are for old installs where the customer is re-roofing and we need to
remove and re-install the arrays. (Canadian Solar and SolarWorld modules)

We use GeoCell 4500 (Black) daily for years with no problems here in

up better in the UV light, and my field experience seems to validate this.

Re: [RE-wrenches] 1000V PV In Hawaii

2014-05-07 Thread James Rudolph
I believe the first pubic commercial system just went in at Turtle Bay
Resort. REC designed and built the system) I have heard that they had alot
of problems finding equipment here rated for 1000v and ending up somehow
putting in 600v equipment that was flagged by the AHJ at final inspection.
Jeff Delany was the project manager.

[RE-wrenches] Nano cleaning and sealing products.

2014-04-21 Thread James Rudolph
Aloha Wrenches,
Now that one in ten houses have a solar system here in Oahu there are a lot
of companies selling products and services like this one below.

http://www.cenano.net/solar-photovoltaic/

Here are a few of their claims:

*Cenano Pacific* exclusive nanotechnology line proudly introduces the #1
solar panel sealant and protectant in the world! Proven to seal and
protect your solar panels plus increase their efficiency. It's 100% safe
and will not affect your panels warranty. The sealant repels fat, dirt,
oil and water on all solid, non-absorbent surfaces such as glass, metal,
plastic, chrome, ceramics, and stainless steel.

Is there anybody out that can share some stories or insights on products
like this?

Do they even work? When exposed to the sun for years will they turn from
clear to opaque..etc.

Will this product or others like this void manufactures warranty's?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Power One Microinverters

2013-05-31 Thread James Rudolph
Aloha,
We have installed one system so far and it seems to be working and
performing well.
The one thing I have learned is that Aurora micros only have a NEMA 4
rating while all Enphase micros have the NEMA 6. This could be a big
problem down the road perhaps. Also the wireless data monitoring was a
little tricky to set up and get going and, is only good for 30 devices.
Our customer had limited roof space so this was the best option for him at
the time.

Here in Hawaii we have a few problems with HOA's ( I mean who doesn't) in
regards with this and some other issues. What we are exploring is trying to
install some sort of living growing hedge in between the homes. Another
option is to use mono panels in areas like this in the future.

[RE-wrenches] Line side taps in Hawai'i

2012-05-17 Thread James Rudolph
Aloha Wrenches,

I have recently started working in Hawaii on the island of Oahu and have
run into some interesting problems with the AHJ's. The biggest issue is
nobody is allowing line side taps on the island, so most of are larger
systems are requiring service upgrades, this also requires replacing the
feeder of course and plenty of trenching which adds so much time and cost
to the whole process.. Now I know Bill Brooks was on island recently and
and this seems to have done no good. I was wondering if anybody can shed
some light on this issue and the reasons why they would not allow this code
compliant option. This is allowed on commercial systems here just not
residential to be clear.

And If your out there Bill, do you have any suggestions on how to approach
this matter with the local inspectors???

[RE-wrenches] best way to connect 12v fans directly to panels with a higher voltage?

2012-01-20 Thread James Rudolph
Dearest Wrenchies,

So here is the situation, we have a customer with a passively heated kiln
for drying lumber. Basically it is a greenhouse. There is no supplemental
heat, or power at the site where it is. When it begins to be heated
moisture will be driven from the lumber, which needs to be exhausted by
fans. We need PV because there is no power there, and because we want to be
completely solar. Rather than set up a charger controller and batteries,
along with humidity controls for the fans, I thought it would be simplest
to get some panels and wire them directly to the fans. That way, when the
sun is shining and the kiln is being heated, the fans will be on to exhaust
the moisture, and when the sun is not they are off. With that said the
customer has alredy bought the 4,12v/18a fans from grainger and has some
ASW 240w 37V panels. I was wondering( since my work is always grid-tie
applications) what would be the best code compliant way to hook up all this
together.
Many thanks in advance for the help.

Re: [RE-wrenches] GEC and EGC Advice

2011-12-06 Thread James Rudolph
Allen,

As far as best practices go, I would route all those conductors and GEC/ECG
in the same raceway." To maintain the shortest electrical time constant in
each circuit, the ECG should be routed as closely as possible to the
circuit conductors. This routing facilitates the operation on over-current
devices"(2011 Nec Handbook). And as far as safety goes I would never rely
on the continuity of the conduit to be my EGC. What if it seperatres some
how due to thremal expansion or some other unforeseen calamity? I do think
SolarPro just ran a great grounding article recently too in regards to the
2011 code changes.
There is also a provision in 690 to combine the EGC&GEC into one conductor
(690.47(c)(3).

I hope this helps,

[RE-wrenches] S5! looking clamps-

2011-11-15 Thread James Rudolph
Greetings Wrenchies,

Has anyone seen these mounting clamps ( see attachment)? I did contact
S-5! and they were puzzled. I am trying to get the wind load and
engineering data for this particular clamp. I pulled this off a very poorly
installed system on a standing seem metal roof, and have been hired to
correct all issues.

Re: [RE-wrenches] cable spacing in trenches

2011-11-04 Thread James Rudolph
Separation is an issue the NEC does not address clearly .However, please
make sure you allow adequate room to repair the conduit if damaged, and 12'
seems to be the magic number. I lso had no luck looking in 490.

NEC 300.4(C)(2)(e) also seems a bit relevant where it allows for conductors
of different voltage ratings in manholes "if the conductors of each system
are permanently and effectively separated from the conductors of the other
systems...", but again this may be referring to separate trenches with
different system voltage ratings entering the same manhole for tapping,
allowing access for maintenance or other uses.

[RE-wrenches] Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC)-

2011-10-31 Thread James Rudolph
Dearest Wrenches,

I was wondering what the "official" postion was with EGCs being ran where
they came in contact with racking. Is it standard practice to use a bare or
a insulated ECG? I do recall having some AHJs in Marin, CA mandating the
use of an insulated ground wire, due to the fact that it came into contact
with dissimilar metals (anodized AL rail and galvanized B-line strut) on
the roof. One approach was to use weeb grounding clips at each module to
limit the need and length of the EGC etc. I was just hoping to hear how
everybody was dealing with this issue.

Thanks in advance,

[RE-wrenches] interrupting current calculations used to determine the interrupting of the AC equipment.

2011-10-03 Thread James Rudolph
Dearest Wenches,

I received an e-mail from PE reviewing one of our projects to build, and
this is what they wrote-

No interrupting current calculations were included. It is suggested the
utility company be consulted for available at the service entrance and these
values be used to determine the interrupting of the AC equipment.

Does any one out there have experience dealing with this issue, or have the
ability to shed some light on this subject.

Many thanks in advance,

I agree with Ray. The best ground clamp I have found for the money ($1600)

Re: [RE-wrenches] ground

2011-09-30 Thread James Rudolph
Todd,

Article 250.52(a)(3) from the 2008 Code states this

(3) Concrete-Encased Electrode. An electrode encased
by at least 50 mm (2 in.) of concrete, located horizontally
near the bottom or vertically, and within that portion of a
concrete foundation or footing that is in direct contact with
the earth, consisting of at least 6.0 m (20 ft) of one or more
bare or zinc galvanized or other electrically conductive
coated steel reinforcing bars or rods of not less than 13 mm
(1⁄2 in.) in diameter, or consisting of at least 6.0 m (20 ft) of
bare copper conductor not smaller than 4 AWG. Reinforcing
bars shall be permitted to be bonded together by the
usual steel tie wires or other effective means. Where multiple
concrete-encased electrodes are present at a building
or structure, it shall be permissible to bond only one into
the grounding electrode system.

It would be wise to consult the local AHJ if this is permisssble with the
rebar. You want to make sure that you have the best grounding system
possible with the chance of a lighting strike.

Good Luck!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Oatey and Standoff vs QuickmountPV Labor

Jamie,

My crew and I have installed the quickmounts almost twice as fast as the
Oateys consistently for a good year or two. My main concern with Oateys is
that rubber boot, it seems to be the Achille's heel of the whole system. How
long does it take before that gasket is shot? This has been the main reason
we switched, not to mention the huge savings in install times.

Hawaii. As of Jan 2010 SolarWorld had no disclaimer on their modules.
