[RE-wrenches] Cummins 13-kW to Schneider AGS

2023-11-13 Thread Matthew Sherald via RE-wrenches
Hello Friends,

I’m stuck trying to wire a 13-kW Cummins LP gen to a Schneider AGS. If someone
has a quick explanation or diagram that they would be willing to share I would
be most grateful.

Many Thanks!

Re: [RE-wrenches] LG chem RESU battery replacements

2022-06-22 Thread Matthew Sherald via RE-wrenches
I have a customer who was told by LG that a replacement is available for her,
but the return shipping box for the defective unit is not. LG said they’d ship
the new unit if the installer (me) agreed to store the defective unit in the
intervening weeks until the return boxes were ready. LGs estimate on box
availability was five weeks at earliest - that was about four weeks ago.

Re: [RE-wrenches] 3000 watt quiet inverter

2022-03-05 Thread Matthew Sherald
Jay,

VFXR might be too loud. I have customers who object to the noise that theirs
makes even though it is mounted to a basement wall and well removed from their
living area. The fans do seem to run frequently.
I’ve installed the Victron model in vans and have not had a complaint.

Good luck!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase sizing

2020-10-03 Thread Matthew Sherald
Jay,

I was grappling with this same question just yesterday.

My inclination is to avoid overpowering the inverter so as to reduce heat and
hopefully prolong the operating life of the electronics.
That said, I was hedging toward using the IQ7A for some 335W LGs when I double
checked the input specs and realized that the vmp on the LG module falls below
the input voltage range. So, for my application I need the IQ7PLUS since it
accommodates the module’s vmp.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Offgrid Generators?

2020-03-04 Thread Matthew Sherald
I’ve enjoyed following this thread. Just today a customer with a Generac wrote
to update me on a long anticipated control board replacement that ended with
the discovery of a shot bearing and the need for more work/downtime.

I have another customer (whom I inherited) who has had a stationary Winco brand
generator for ten years or more. His experience with the Winco has been a good
one and I see that the company has some 8 and 12k units offered for prime
power.
I’d welcome any opinions on the reliability/suitability of the Winco brand for
off-grid homeowners. My initial impression has been positive, but my experience
with them is limited.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Schneider Phone Support

2019-01-09 Thread Matthew Sherald
Wrenches,

I also had need of tech support from Schneider and was nonplussed when my
trusty phone number failed to connect to their service desk. I filled out their
installer form and received a reply email with a number and an un-advertised
extension. The number gets you the same dead end menu choices but if you dial
the secret extension you may be placed in contact with a real live tech person.
Anyway, I also posted my issue via the web form and got a delayed response.
Good tech support makes a difference when I decide between brands. Schneider
used to have very good support. I hope they don’t downsize or otherwise
diminish its effectiveness. The new phone/email routine sure left me a bit
vexed.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Splices in service panel

2016-09-08 Thread Matthew Sherald
I got zapped on a neutral in a generac transfer switch that I thought was
de-energized. Someone prior had moved hots from the transfer switch to the
main panel, but not the neutrals. I was disassembling connections in the
transfer switch as part of a move to a battery-backup system and I could
not believe it when I got popped. The experience drove home the importance
of terminating the phase and neutral in the same enclosure.

I used one of these at a grid-tie job where the customer was simultaneously
having a Generac unit installed. The Generac installer turned me on to the
device and it seemed to do the trick. It was a similar situation where the
PV and GT inverter were at an outbuilding far removed from the main panel
at the house.
