 ppln Every thing seems to be on AltME now, whith very little echo

 My take is that RT wanted the community involved, but in an
 experimental way. They also needed a good, controlled, communication
 mechanism, which AltME is. I don't think their intent was to exclude
 anyone who wanted to be involved, but it wouldn't work, as a first
 time experiment, to have hundreds of people involved either.

 ppln Isn't it possible, even for someone like me that do not have to
 ppln skills to participate actively to the project, to be a little
 ppln more aware of what is going on?

 Everyone can help, especially with testing. RT may not be pushing hard
 for lots of public input yet because some things are still in flux and
 you know how people can be when the thing they want doesn't get on the
 list, or is pulled from the release. :)

 ppln Is it possible to visit your AltME world as a guest?

 Yes.

[REBOL] Data retrieval

2004-01-30 Thread Gisle Dankel

Hi fellow rebols,

I'm writing a script to collect data from various web pages and send the results in an
email.
Most web pages are ok but a few cause some problems.

Here's an example:

www.tradesports.com

This page allows you to place bets on various topics.
I want to extract this kind of information, but the links trigger javascript functions
so there appears to be no direct URLs to the resulting pages.
I figure I need to open an HTTP port and post whatever the javascript function sends
myself.

Here's an example of a javascript function call in a link:

a href=# onClick=javascript:trade(88190);return false;Trade This Now!/a

And here's the trade function:

function trade(conID)
{

 document.POSTGSX.request_operation.value = trade;
 document.POSTGSX.request_type.value = action;
 document.POSTGSX.selConID.value = conID;
 document.POSTGSX.location.value = TradeCentre;
 document.POSTGSX.submit();
}

I don't know much about javascript and HTTP post.
From what I can gather I need to send the same information to the server as the
submit() function above, but I have absolutely no idea of what information is sent or
how to send it. Also, how do I receive the result? Can I open an http port to achieve
this?

Any help greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Gisle

[REBOL] Re: This is dumb (don't do it!)

2004-01-30 Thread SunandaDH

Hi Hallvard,

 OK, the reason I did this, is I wonder if I can have a CGI script close the
 connection to user and then continue processing some data afterwards. So
that
 the web user wouldn't have to wait ages for the browser to tell him the
page
 has finished loading when actually it is.

  The following CGI script didn't do the trick. Anyone got an idea?

I tried to find a foolproof way of doing this for something we needed or
REBOL.org. I failed.

Part of the problem is that you can't control when the server sends the data.
If you only have a small amount of data (not enough to fill whatever is a
block transmitted across the Internet) that probably won't be until your CGI
quits.

I tried various cunning schemes, like explicitly setting a Content-length
header and then sending more data than that (to force a block transmit). They
didn't work.

In the end, in our case, as we only need to run some non-user background
stuff occasionally, I added some rudimentary code to check that the request is not
from a human being. So we only run the background task if the referrer is a
bot. I don't mind keeping them waiting a couple of seconds once in a while.
And the background task is self-limiting -- it'll stop after a couple of
seconds, whether it's finished or not.

The site is hit by bots hundreds of times a day -- so the background task
never has to wait long to resume.

This kludge works because the background processing we need to do is not
related to the current message -- it's the equivalent of an occasional recycle to
keep things current.

Of course, we have to check that the background task isn't already running
(if we get two bots that trigger it in the same second or so).

If you find a better solution, please let me know!

Sunanda.

POSTGSX is the name of a form on the web page. request_operation etc. are the

to post something like this to the server:

request_operation=trade
request_type=action
selConID=conID ; remark: replace this with whatever value the variable represents
(i.e. whatever number is passed to the javascript function, e.g. 88190)

Hi,

To know what a browser is saying to a server I wrote a
'remote echo proxy' several years back and am slowly improving it.

to try the current version, set your browsers http proxy to

It is not really ready for prime time but often gets the job done.
now that I have started playing with 'view I am tempted
to make a 'local echo proxy' people could run on their own machines which
would be an awful lot easier to make robust.
