Re: Gzip not compiled for large file size?

2002-05-18 Thread Tom Pollerman

   I got this from:
http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hpux/Gnu/tar.1.13.25/

The README for Gnu tar there reads in part:

GNU tar uses the gzip and bzip2 programs to read and write compressed
archives. If you don't have these programs already, you need to
install them. Their sources can be found at:

ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gzip/
http://sourceware.cygnus.com/bzip2/

If you see the following symptoms:

$ tar -xzf file.tar.gz
gzip: stdin: decompression OK, trailing garbage ignored
tar: Child returned status 2

then you have encountered a gzip incompatibility that should be fixed
in gzip test version 1.3, which as of this writing is available at
. You can work around the
incompatibility by using a shell command like
`gzip -d

Re: Direct Rendering

2002-05-18 Thread Statux

If you're in runlevel 5 (X login), then you'll have to edit everything and
then reboot or something.. well.. not really but the easiest solution is
to be in runlevel 3 (if you're not in runlevel 3, do "init 3" as root.
hopefully that should work). It's easier this way because you'll have to
keep testing things until it's right. "startx" is the command to get X
running from a VT.

I have a GeForce2 GTS. I'll send you my config file off the list (if
possible). You'll need to edit it to match your system though. DON'T just
plop mine in place over your's. Use it as a guide.

Well, the short answer is yes. The long answer requires that you fill in

Re: Direct Rendering

you have to edit the XF86Config file a bit. You'll want to check with your
card's maker for drivers, etc, and related instructions on how to edit the
config. nVidia, for instance, has a Linux driver and a nice page on how to
get everything working.

Big question here is: Do you have a 3D accelerator card?

If you don't have one, then direct rendering is pointless because it won't
work. If you do, what make and model? :)

Not necessary,

Add to /etc/sysconfig/network:
HOSTNAME=phoenix.miller.com

and of course ensure your /etc/hosts file also uses these names correctly

[OT] latex icelandic and pdf

2002-05-18 Thread Hidong Kim

Hi,

I'm trying to make a document with Icelandic characters in LaTeX. I put
"usepackage{t1enc}" in the header of my document. I can make the
Icelandic characters now, but the output looks really bad on the
screen. I generally convert my LaTeX files to PDF with pdflatex. Since
putting "usepackage{t1enc}" in the header of my LaTeX documents, the
output of pdflatex looks all blocky in a PDF viewer, like Acrobat (on
both Linux and Windows). But they do print out looking good. In
contrast, the dvi outputs look fine both on the screen and in print.
How can I make PDF files look good on the screen with the
"usepackage{t1enc}" option? Thanks,

why not use ssh which is installed on the server by default? it will handle everything
that ftp, rlogin and telnet will handle, and there is nothing tricky to be setup.
rh comes built in with a client, and their is putty for windows and mac.

I would not touch rlogin or telnet with a 10 foot pole. Use ssh/scp
instead. That would allow you to be more secure, and you probably
wouldn't need ftp either.

Again, I would use ssh rather than a VPN and rsync over ssh rather than
rdist.

Possible, but Red Hat does not support FreeS/WAN or any VPN's at the
moment, although CIPE is at least in the distribution.

NAT seems to have stopped functioning on RH-7.2 What do I check?

2002-05-18 Thread Johnny Smith

Good afternoon,

Network address translation seems [NAT]
seems to have stopped functioning on my RH-7.2
firewall box.. I have Bastille-Firewall installed.

I has been functioning for months without problems
but now the hosts on my lan cannot see the firewall
box [cannot ping it] or see past the firewall.

The firewall box can dial out to the ner ok but cannot

ping the hosts on the lan.

Is it possible the nic on the firewall box ahas gone
bad?

The routing tables all appear normal.

And /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward is set to '1'.

I'm not sure what else to check.

I'd appreciate some advice on where to start first.

Thanks in advance.

Need help!!

2002-05-18 Thread Johansson Henrik (Svensk Börsinformation)

I managed to set the root account shell to /bin/false
and now I can't get superuser privileges of any kind!!

Tried "su -s /bin/bash" but /bin/false is not in
/etc/shells so it rejected that.

Desperate for help!!

Setting Domain Name in Redhat

2002-05-18 Thread CM Miller

I'm not sure what is the proper way to set a domain
name for the computers on my network.

I have two machines, named phoenix and thurston.

When I do hostname for both, I get the following:

phoenix.miller
thurston.miller

So under /etc/sysconfig and then vi network do I want
to add?

DOMAINNAME = phoenix.miller.com

Would this be correct?

I'm not a KDE user, but /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc seems to contain the settings

Yes, unless you just want to route traffic for the office subnet over the
office dialup and let all other traffic go to the Internet over eth1. Then
it would be

  route add -net xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy ppp0

>These are the results of ifconfig and route commands after being dialing up

[snip]

You definitely need to add a route for the packets you want to send
through the dialup link. Using a default route is probably simplest, you
just have to reset it after the PPP link is dropped.

Re: NAT seems to have stopped functioning on RH-7.2 What do I check?

2002-05-18 Thread Frederic Herman

I'm assuming that the NIC lights appear OK. Otherwise it's either the
NIC or what it's connected to. You might try a power cycle on the box
(not just a reboot.) I have had problems with a network card that would
occasionally lock up and require a power down and up.

NAT seems to have stopped functioning on RH-7.2 What do I check?

2002-05-18 Thread Johnny Smith

Good afternoon,

Network address translation[NAT]
seems to have stopped functioning on my RH-7.2
firewall box.. I have Bastille-Firewall installed.

I has been functioning for months without problems
but now the hosts on my lan cannot see the firewall
box [cannot ping it] or see past the firewall.

The firewall box can dial out to the ner ok but
cannot ping the hosts on the lan.

RE: RedHat Scripts

2002-05-18 Thread Hugh E Cruickshank

Hi Ted:

I just went through some of this and there are a couple of things
to watch out for. See the "init/rc scripts" thread in the maillist
archives for details:

https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/private/redhat-list/2002-April/137519.htm
l

Basically you will need to:

1. Write a script to start/stop your process. This script will
need a minimum of two comment lines ("chkconfig:" and
"description:") to supply info to chkconfig. It will need
to handle a parameter with a minimum of 2 values (start and
stop). It will also need to create/delete a marker file in
   /var/lock/subsys/.

2. Copy the script to /etc/init.d/.

3. Use the "chkconfig --add name" command to populate the
   /etc/rc*.d/ directories.

For example, say we have a script (xxxsrv) that contains:

  :
  # chkconfig: 235 99 01
  # description:Sample XXX server
  #
  CMD=`basename $0`
  PRG=`echo "${CMD}" | sed -e 's/[KS][0-9][0-9]//'`

  case $1 in
  start)
  /usr/bin/XXXstart
  touch /var/lock/subsys/${PRG}
  ;;
  stop)
  /usr/bin/XXXstop
  rm /var/lock/subsys/${PRG}  ;;
  *)
  echo "Usage: ${PRG} {start|stop}"
  ;;
  esac

The "235" in the "chkconfig:" comment will tell chkconfig to
install the script into rc2.d, rc3.d and rc5.d. The "99" and
"01" will tell chkconfig the "level number" to use in the S
and K filenames. So after coping our xxxsrv script to
/etc/init.d and then running "chkconfig --add xxxsrv" we will
have the the following links to the /etc/init.d/xxxsrv script:

/etc/rc0.d/K01xxxsrv
/etc/rc1.d/K01xxxsrv
/etc/rc2.d/S99xxxsrv
/etc/rc3.d/S99xxxsrv
/etc/rc4.d/K01xxxsrv
/etc/rc5.d/S99xxxsrv
/etc/rc6.d/K01xxxsrv

Not that I have not tested the script above but it is a hack
of my working script so I would not anticipate a problem with
it.

That should get you started but check out the references that I
was given in the archived messages for more info.

HTH

Regards, Hugh

RedHat Scripts

2002-05-18 Thread Ted Gervais

I have an application I want to run in my RedHat 7.3 system and its called
from /usr/sbin directory. To get it to run at boottime, I stuck a link to
it from /etc/rc.d/rc3.d. It works but I know this is not the right way to
do things. It seems to me that I should be writing a script to bring that
application up, rather than just calling it from where it sleeps. Of
course I sometimes also call some of these applications from the
/etc/rc.d/rc.local. Rather than through proper scripts etc..

I want to do it the right way, at least for once. Is there a step by step
process I can follow to get at least one of these applications starting up
right and closing down properly? I don't want to learn the process *
indepth *, but enough to get ONE working and even if it was down for me, it
would be a great example to follow for the future.

Any thoughts guys?

In fact I have. I use evolution for work e-mail and mutt for everything
else. But the thread appeared to be about server side groupware so I
tried to provide some information on those options. Although evolution
has a commercial connector to MS Exchange server, it looked like the
person wanted to migrate away from MS Exchange.

The SuSE e-mail server III includes a complete groupware package from a
company called Bynari. It appears to be full featured, but it uses a
web interface for everything. Also, while the underlying OS (Linux) and
MTA (Postfix) are open source, the groupware package is not.

Best Regards,
Keith

A possibly easier way to achieve the above (for the "daring"):

Just log into a text console (possibly from single user mode, or do
"telinit 3" to shut down the gnome login screen), and then:

rpm -e `rpm -qa | grep ximian`

(The "backticks" around the "inner" half of the command cause its
output to be used as the command line of the outer half). If it
complains about dependencies etc. you might have to use --nodeps or
maybe even --force with the -e.

So long,

Re: Tape errors

2002-05-18 Thread Mike Burger

Try 'mt -f /dev/ht0 erase' before the tar, and see what happens.

My understanding is the Caldera's "Volution" is designed to do this.
