You could check freshmeat.net for that. In a pinch, you could unload
your messages to an IMAP server (somewhere), then pull them down again
in a new program (Evolution has been very good for me...so has Netscape,
for that matter).

Looks like there is a bot/bnc connected to Undernet IRC network through your box.

*** Resolved 205.252.46.98 to babble-on.systems.cais.net
and
*** Resolved McLean.VA.us.undernet.org to 205.252.46.98

I suggest you unplug your server from network Immediately, then Replace the server
with another server If it's an important operational server. Remember to patch the
replaced server with all the patches available from RedHat errata website for your
distribution and services that you run. Bytheway Default ftp in RH7.2 is indeed a
vulnerable version and it's update is available on RedHat 7.2 errata website. If you
backup anything from the compromised server then remember not to backup system files
because they are most probably trojanned.

After you're done with your backup server, Consider doing a forensic analysis on your
hacked system or take help from some Security Expert, Inorder to findout what rootkits
are installed, what were the patterns and all, How did you most probably got hacked?
and If it was running a bot/psyBNC from your server then you can findout his/her's
bot's nick or his/her's own nick and ident, It will help you a lot in finding out who
probably hacked you. It's all not necessary, If you dont want to, you can just format
and re-install it as well. But If you're curious then take that step.

Standard procedure in such unfortunate situations:

-Unplug/disconnect from Network.
-Back up any personal data. Do _not_ back up any system files like
configuration files.
-Find installation disks, re-install while reformatting all partitions
as you go.
-Restore personal backups.
-Disable all outside/public services.
-Apply all errata updates from Red Hat or mirror.
-Re-examine local policies, i.e. 'should I run services that have a
really bad track record for exploits, and if so, how can I make this
harder for the next time'
-Re-connect to network, and run up2date at least once a day.

The reason being someone else seems to have root access on your
machine, and may have multiple backdoors that are well concealed, and
you many never find them all.

Check to see if the mc file has procmail declared in it somewhere, also
double check the paths at the top of the mc file.

Shutting down ppp link

I would like to allow any user to shut down my ppp0 connecting.
Currently I have a ppp-off script (standard one with the 7.3 distribution)
and it kills the process, but it won't kill the ppp process unless the
owner executes the ppp-off script. I have tried setting 'chmod +s
ppp-off' and that doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Migrating Outlook Express messages

2002-06-01 Thread Ricardo J. Méndez Castro

Hi again,

After getting my scanner recognized, the main thing that's stopping me from
turning Linux into my main platform is the huge amount of e-mail that I have on
Outlook Express folders.   Can anyone recommend an e-mail client
(K-Mail, Evolution, whatever) that has a good working migration program for
Outlook Express 6?

Promise FastTrack 100 Lite & Red Hat 7.3

2002-06-01 Thread Ricardo J. Méndez Castro

Hi,

I'm using Red Hat 7.2 and want to install Red Hat 7.3. However, I'm using a
Gygabyte GA-7ZXR Motherboard with a Promise Fasttrack 100 Lite Raid controller,
which isn't being recognized by the Red Hat 7.3 installer.  From what I
understood, Promise controllers were supported natively on kernel from version
2.4.17 on, and unfortunately I can't use theddrivers on Promise's site because
they statically link to Kernel 2.4.7.

Any pointers?  Does anyone have a similar setup?

(Of course, a valid question might also be, is the upgrade hassle worth
it?)

Thanks in advance,

/etc/sendmail.cf

Does that file exist?

That was it. I knew I was missing something simple. The
/etc/sendmail.cf file was zero length. As soon as I moved the
/etc/mail/sendmail.cf file up one level all was well.

Sendmail Oddity

2002-06-01 Thread Brian Hanks

I just recently built a new 7.3 box and have just about everything
running as I like with the exception of sendmail. The original install
had no /etc/mail/sendmail.cf file, but sendmail was successfully
starting at boot. I made some minor modifications to the sendmail.mc
file and used m4 to generate a sendmail.cf file. Now, is spitting out a
"Starting sendmail: 554 5.0.0 No local mailer defined
554 5.0.0 QueueDirectory (Q) option must be set" error. The odd part is
that putting it back to the original state doesn't help. It still won't
start. I keep getting the same error no matter what combo I try. I've
looked at everything that I can think of (actually twice) and I am
getting no where. I am no sendmail expert, but I don't remember ever
seeing this issue before.

Any ideas about what I might be missing?

Thanks,

one of the local folks here in the triangle has a web page,
www.dulug.duke.edu/~mark, lots of docbook/xml links.

and, specifically for red hat, there's people.redhat.com/twaugh.

RE: Multiple Printers On 1 Box And Sharing

2002-06-01 Thread Jim Hale

Thanks Cokey - I appreciate yours, Anthony's and Ray's comments on this
- this is EXACTLEY what I was looking for - stuff to look out for BEFORE
I go to the trouble of doing it. I'm not a Linux Technical Guru and if I
would have run into any of this while doing the installation, I wouldn't
have known WHAT to ask.

Thanks again, I'll give this a shot sometime this weekend. :)

Yup, got 3 on one (RH 6.2 with 2.4.18) at the moment with no
modification.
I believe I read that that was the limit without changing something in
the
kernel code, but I haven't confirmed it.

If you're using an ISA card with manual settings, you shouldn't have
much
of a problem. Just chuck it in and the system should detect all the
ports.
You will need to be sure you have enough IRQ's/io ports and that are
they
set correctly. If it's ISA PNP, I'm not sure, but it's probably handled
like the PCI below.

If you're using a PCI card, my experience is that it's a bit of a
different
ball game. Since all the add on PCI parallel port boards that I've seen
are PNP, You must determine the IRQ and/or io port on the card that you
wish
to attach to a given lp port using information from the boards manuf.
and
/proc/pci. By this I mean that it may not be obvious which io port on
the card
is to be used as for a parallel port. My dual port PCI parallel card
shows
up like this in the /proc/pci:

  Bus 0, device 5, function 0:
Communication controller: PCI device 9710:9815 (rev 1).
  IRQ 20.
  Master Capable. Latency=64.
  I/O at 0xfc70 [0xfc77].
  I/O at 0xfc78 [0xfc7f].
  I/O at 0xfc88 [0xfc8f].
  I/O at 0xfc90 [0xfc97].
  I/O at 0xfc98 [0xfc9f].
  I/O at 0xfcb0 [0xfcbf].

You must have the manuf. specs to know. Also, not all PCI
parallel/serial cards are supported, although thanks to Tim Waugh of RH,
many (most?) are. Note also
that moving a PCI board usually/always (??) changes the io ports.

In either case you must set the IRQ/io ports in your /etc/modules.conf.
Mine looks like so:

-

#
# Current Parallel setup! Be Careful; Very Careful!!
#
# Note: Anytime the PCI parallel card is moved to a different
# PCI slot, the io ports change. Check the /proc/pci
# file for the new ones
#
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378,0xfc70,0xfc88 irq=7,none,none

-

I had a box setup like this once. It worked fine after I got the BIOS to
detect the second parallel port. All the printer config tools work
normally.

Can you not just go ahead and try these things, then ask when you have real
problems ? Please.

The reason I say this is in the content of a polite e-mail a week or more
back I sent privately to you.

Haven't tried this myself, since I use a simple printer server but
there certainly shouldn't be any problem as long as you can interface
to both printers from the pc.
Using Cups and its webinterface it is easy to add muliple printers.

Multiple Printers On 1 Box And Sharing

2002-06-01 Thread Jim Hale

I have an old P233MMX sitting in my garage that I'm thinking about
setting up as a Printer server. Kind of like a 'fat' HP JetDirect - so I
can move these printers anywhere I have a network connection since the
printers are sitting on a roll-around cart.

Question is, can I have 2 printer ports in the machine (one for my laser
and one for my Color Inkjet) and be able to share them to Linux and
Windows (Win2k Pro and XP) machines? I know I can do it with one but I
haven't seen anything about 2. I'd like to get Red Hat installed and
configured, remove the monitor, keyboard and mouse and then just access
the box thru SSH and VNC.

Has anyone tried this?

Thanks!
