RE: Red Hat Linux 7.3 Freeze Up

Hi

I had the same problem with an "old" P200mmx
I thought that some options of the out-of-the-box kernel were not
appropriate (considering my old hardware) so I compiled a new one with
carefully choosen options. since that, kde has never frozen anymore

Excellent idea. I tested this out through various accounts, and signing /
encrypting methods, and it works welll. I can still use the "p" feature
in Mutt for advanced PGP/MIME formatting too... Your method covers all
bases..

How to change the res on a notebook?

2002-07-22 Thread SkYE
Hello all,

I use a notebook that has a res of 1400x1050, and a monitor that has a
res of 1280x1024.

I can't figure out how to have different res on different monitors, so I
want to change my notebook display to 1280x1024.

When I use Xconfigurator, if I do not have 1400x1050 as a mode X will
hang (even if I select the monitor as only 1280x1024. Having 1280x1024
as an additional mode also doesn't work, it actually makes the display
bigger (like a 1600x1400 virtual desktop).

Can anyone help me?

Thanks =)

No problem. I think I'm going to write this up and post it on my web site.
I realize that most people use GUI mailers, but being able to do things
like this might help a few people decide to try mutt.

Is a server admin application sufficient?

2002-07-22 Thread Dan Sabo

Hi,

I was wondering if server administrator software would do the following?
Also if the below is all I need to do on a web server, would a server
administrator software package be sufficient or do I really need to know
Linux and Apache prior to setting up a server for multiple web/e-commerce
sites? I already know well my e-commerce software, just starting out on
Apache and Linux.

Set up e-mail accounts for each domain name on a server

FTP accounts for individual users/domains

Set up web sites with IP Ailasing ( multiple domains which point to server
IP)

Set up web sites with domain names having their own IP addresses

Set up bandwidth limits for each domain and entire server

Monitor server and individual web site/domain bandwidth

Create cgi-bin for each domain name/web site

Configure server for cgi scripts including perl and php for individual sites

Create RSA Keys for Thawte Certificates and be able to install and maintain
certificates?

Monitor disk space for each site

pdksh comes with the standard Red Hat distro, although it may not be
installed by default. If you want the original Korn shell, then you'll
need to download the source and compile it for yourself.

I use a cable modem for my internet service. It's relatively problem free.
Your mileage may vary, depending on your cable provider's configuration
and protocol selection. But, if they use standard DHCP, all you really
need to do is enable DHCP on the Ethernet interface connected to your
cable modem.

Otherwise, you will need to know what protocols they're using for
authentication and address assignment, and do some reading up on TCP/IP
configuration on The Linmux Documentation Project.

See the character map (cmap) commands in my ~/.vimrc-mail config file.
":cs" is clearsign, ":es" is encrypt/sign, and ":ee" is just encrypt. I
had to use two characters for encrypt to avoid any random "e" character
triggering an expansion to the encrypt command.

My ~/.muttrc is set to include both the name and email address of the
sender when I reply to a message. That makes it easy for me to copy/paste
the sender's email address to the end of the encrypt command as the
recipient. That works as long as I'm replying.

If I'm composing, I just have to type in the sender's email address, or
copy it from the To line when I start the message. Sometimes I just
save/quit vim (ZZ), then run spell check (i), then re-edit the file (e) to
sign and/or encrypt it. I only go through that for a few messages a week.
Mostly I just proofread before signing.

More questions than answers, unfortunately.
Why 2.4.7-10? You don't mention what release you are running, but for Red
Hat 7.1/7.2 , the current kernel is at kernel-2.4.9-34.

Why are you recompiling? Iptables support is built into the stock kernel.
Just turn of ipchains, if it is running, remove the modules, if loaded,
and you should be able to load the iptables modules.

As for the errors, what did you begin with for a .config file? You can use
the ones in /usr/src/linux-2.4/configs/ as a start. They are the ones
used by Red Hat to build the stock kernels. Just choose the one for your
arch, and copy it to /usr/src/linux-2.4/.config.

Setup an SMB printer on the linux box using printconf:

  printconf-gui
or
  printconf-tui

The following perl script is quick, dirty, and untested. but it should be
enough to give some ideas. Just use the procmail filter to pipe the
message into this script:

#!/usr/bin/perl
#
# Detach a PDF document from an email message and print it.
#

$pid = $$;
$scriptname = `basename $0`;
chomp $scriptname;
$temppdf = "/tmp/$scriptname_$pid.pdf";
$tempps  = "/tmp/$scriptname_$pid.ps";
$printer = 'lp';

unlink($tempps);

Help with internet access

2002-07-22 Thread Seth Brooks
I'm running Red Hat Linux 7.3 Personal.  I recently talked with tech agents with my local internet provider.  They do no offer support Linux, but one agent told me that customers do run Linux with the internet provider's cable internet service, but without the tech support.  Another agent told me that in order to run Linux with the cable internet service I would have to configure an IP address automatically.  How do I do this?  If I get the cable internet service, why won't I be able to just hook up the cable modem, install it, and use the internet?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

RE: multiple occurrences of a single service

2002-07-22 Thread Rob Emanuele

You can cut down the memory usage for some of the services. I
mentioned how to do it with Apache. In the startup script for
nfs, /etc/init.d/nfs, the number it starts is 8. You can change
them all. The rest of them you need to check the docs.

Think about what you're using. How many users? What kind of
constant load? How is it performing now? If you have say more
than 10-15 users, put some more memory in there. Its cheap and
it can't hurt. The processor can probably handle a small for web
and file sharing.

My guess is that you're not in charge of network security at either
location, so you're not going to have a great deal of success. You need to
do port forwarding at the NAT device on one or both ends to make this
work. In other words, someone needs to poke holes in the system security
to give you a connection.

On the other hand, if you are the trusting sort, you might want to check
out GoToMyPC; I don't know if they have a Linux client, but you may find
some joy there. Their service (and a few others) basically have the client
connect to a central server and maintain a connection so that you can
tunnel back through using a secondary client. Personally, I wouldn't trust
my data to a man-in-the-middle scenario like that even if they did have a
Linux client, but your mileage may vary.

Re: Can Multiple drives appear as one network drive?

That's a sufficiently vague question that the answer almost has to be yes,
but there an infinite number of ways to do it (depending on exactly what
you mean).

If you want multiple hard disk drives to appear as a single block device
(which you can then create a filesystem on and access over a network if you
so desire) without using RAID then you could try the Logical Volume Manager
which you can read about at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO.html

If you want to use block devices (e.g. hard disks) from other machines as
physical extents for LVM array you can do so with the Network Block Device
driver (documented as part of the Linux kernel documentation), but this is
probably not a good idea for a production machine (a network outage of any
kind would tend to result in massive data corruption).

If you're interested in making multiple directories appear as one "drive"
from the point of view of a remote machine then you don't need to mess
around with RAID or LVM at all, the easiest thing to do is simply to create
an empty directory to export (with NFS or Samba or ftpd or whatever) and
populate it mountpoints and/or links to the stuff you want. Lets say, for
example, that you wanted to have a directory that Windows users could map
as a drive letter which would let them read the public FTP directory and
the temp directory on the same machine that you're running Samba on, and
also the public FTP directory on another machine down the hall. You can
create the directory with something like:

mkdir -p /var/samba/sharedfiles

then do a "cd /var/samba/sharedfiles" and start adding content.
First of all you want your temp dir (/tmp) and your public FTP dir
(/var/ftp/pub) to appear. The easiest way to do this is to put in symbolic
links to the directories themselves like this:

ln -s /var/ftp/pub public_ftp
ln -s /tmp temp

(see also
http://www.tldp.org/LDP/gs/node5.html#SECTION00511 and the
man page for the "link" command)

For the machine down the hall you need something a little more complex. One
approach would be to export it's /var/ftp/pub directory with NFS, and then
mount the NFS export on your main machine dir using something like:
mkdir /var/samba/sharedfiles/otherbox_ftp
mount remotemachine:/var/ftp/pub /var/samba/sharedfiles/otherbox_ftp

Aside from the fact that it's a morally bad idea (and illegal, unless
you've posted due notice under the 1987 ECPA statute), you might want to
check out ttysnoop.

If you just want to know what commands honest users are running, turn on
process accounting (see accton, sa, ac, and similar), view thier
.bash_history, and so forth.

If you're trying to do remote support, and they're running in X, check out
the "-shared" argument to vncviewer.

Good luck.

Sure... Just mount them under one or one another. So for
instance, lets say you have drives A, B, C and D. Drives A,
B and C are local and drive D is remote (samba or NFS or whatever). Now
make some mount points (dirs) on drive A and mount B, C
and D on (under?) A. If you share drive A through Samba or NFS,
anyone mounting drive A will see all four drives as one (assuming
security is correct).

I've got a number of old machines at work all hooked together
like this with one Samba share off the base machine. The other machines
NFS mount all their DASD to the base machine. Looks
like one drive to any machine that connects.

Have to put in a plug for firestarter (firestarter.sourceforge.net) for
all the gnome users out there. It'll do either ipchains or iptables, it
has a nice configuration wizard, it comes with a neato gnome status doc
applet thingie that shows the hits in real time. Naturally you can
study and/or edit the rules it creates to your heart's content. I was
going to build one from scratch, but firestarter worked so well I never

As a side note, see the detach/attach and multiple window functionality

It is possible. I would setup my iptables rules to catch the different
types of traffic you want to graph and then write some scripts which
will get the appropiate data from the output of iptables -L -n (or
/proc if you know where to look) and write in MRTG compliant format.
Maybe there is some easier way.

The ideal scenario would be a ucd-snmp/net-snmp extension to
manage/monitor iptables. Then just poll the firewall in the appropiate
MIB. Wishful thinking?

passes through the firewall for each client computer. Then be able to
see how much traffic is passed through the firewall for each IP/port
combination so I can see how much FTP traffic one computer is using vs.
their HTTP traffic. I've been searching around freshmeat and google but
I can't find the answer.

Is this even possible?

Thanks,
ajay

Re: A Check to see if RAID 1 is configured corretly?

2002-07-22 Thread Chris Watt

At 16:15 2002/07/19 -0400, you wrote:

>Does anyone know if there is a way to check my RAID config to see if the
>RAID 1 setup is set correctly?

Yes, just run "cat /proc/mdstat" and it will tell you what all your
software RAID (I assume that we're talking about software RAID here,
otherwise consult the manual for your RAID controller) devices are doing.
e.g. for a RAID-5 array on one of my systems I see:

$ cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid5]
read_ahead 1024 sectors
md0 : active raid5 sde1[1] sdd1[2] sdc1[0]
   132369600 blocks level 5, 4k chunk, algorithm 0 [3/3] [UUU]

unused devices:
$

I'm sure this is documented somewhere, but basically this is telling me
that three partitions are in use on three SCSI drives (the odd ordering is
a result of a few raidhotadd operations on this machine), and I believe
that the [UUU] indicates that they are all up to date (when one of the
discs failed a while back this box showed [U_U]). If the devices were not
in sync then the mdstat output would include an indication of how close to
being in sync they were and how much longer it expected to take (sorry, no
example of this).

> Also is there a way to view the
>contents/file names of both mirrored hard drives independently in a RAID 1
>config?

Yes, it's not even very hard. Last time I looked for RAID-1 (only) you
could mdstop the array (after un-mounting it) and then just mount the
component partitions (read only) using the underlying filesystem. e.g. if
your RAID device is /dev/md0 made up of /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 and it
contains an ext2 filesystem then you should be able to do:

# Make sure the array isn't mounted
umount /dev/md0

# Stop the MD device
mdstop /dev/md0

# Make a couple of mountpoints
cd /mnt
mkdir parta partb

# Mount the component devces
mount -t ext2 -oro /dev/sda1 parta
mount -t ext2 -oro /dev/sdb1 partb

# Recursively check for file differences
diff -NPrq

A more generic solution (it works with RAID levels 1, 4, and 5) would be to
generate checksums for all the files on your RAID array and then use
raidhotremove to remove one of your raid discs from the array and see if
the checksums still match. If they do then raidhotadd the disc you removed,
wait for the array to sync up again (you can check if it's in sync by
reading /proc/mdstat), raidhotremove the other drive and test the checksums
again. If the checksums all match up then your RAID device is not
corrupted. Of course if you remove and then add your only non-corrupted
copy your reconstruction would actually give you two copies of the corrupt
version rather than the "clean" version. Normally you should only see data
differences between the devices if you have a hardware problem which is
both serious (resulting in data corruption on the disc) and very subtle
(unless you're running old (pre UDMA) IDE interfaces which don't do error
checking). I have never actually seen this happen or even heard of a case,
so I can't really comment on how common it is or what you should do if it
happens to you except from the obvious suggestion that you should replace
the hardware involved post-haste.

Actually, in 7.3 the correct place to change the syslog options is
in the /etc/sysconfig/syslog file. If this file is present, the
SYSLOGD_OPTIONS will be ignored.

I have been attempting to installed Red Hat Professional 7.3 today and I am
receiving the following error message:

<0>Kernel Panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
In interrupt handler - not synching

At the top of the page what I assume is the current process is displayed:

Can anyone give me some direction as to what the problem may be here?

This machine is a 750mhz Celereon with 128mb ram, 52x CD, 30mb hard drive.
The motherboard is an Intel D815EEA and has the video and ethernet
connection on board.

Thanks for any help.

OT - Codeweavers Crossover - One mans findings

2002-07-22 Thread Alan Harding

This is not a problem report, but just a note on something positive I
have discovered. Please note I am not affiliated in anyway to
Codeweavers, this is just an unsolicted testimonial

I have seen in this list a lot of people asking questions about living
in offices in the Windows world, and the problems they have with the
Office formatted documents. So I would like to share something.

I was recently told by my company that I either had to find a way of
sending and viewing documents that were 'Standard' format or I would
have to blow away my laptop and install Windoze.

So I downloaded and installed Codeweavers Crossover for Windows. This is
an emulator (as far as I can see) for the MS Office environment and
unfortunatly costs money. However I figured the $60+ was worth it to
retain my Linux desktop.

The install was 7Mb long, and once installed I then had to use the
Office2000 cd to install the packages. The install was very painless,
and the setup routine for Office was quick and informative. Now I am
running MS Office 2000 Word and Excel on my laptop and I have to say
that they seem to be running quicker than on my colleagues similar (Dell
Latitude 400Mhz 128MbRam) machines. This is purely subjective, as I
havent yet done any performance checks.

So, for all those out there in a similar position, have a look at
Crossover, it works fine.

p.s A byproduct is that I got Internet Explorer installed which now
means my good lady can now play games on MSN.com which keeps her happy
to, well worth $60 ;)

pps, if only I can get the company to update to Exchange 2000 then I
will evaluate the Evolution plugin as well

Re: Question on 'if' in bash script

2002-07-22 Thread Ken Sorensen

A subshell is spawn by using a ` ( the [~] key ) surrounding the desired
command.
To the best of my knowledge an "if" conditional test in a bash shell ( if
 ] then fi ) cannot
drop into a subshell within the brackets [].
However, two ways I know how to solve your question.

1)
#!/bin/sh
...
$VARIABLE_NAME="`lsmod |grep $module`"
# Notice the "`", and the variable is surrounded by double quotes.
# If the subshell command generates several lines, it does goofy things
# to your terminal. Double quotes keep it contained.

if [ -n/-z "$VARIABLE_NAME" ] # Double quotes again
then
do_stuff...
fi

2)
#!/bin/sh
...
test -n/-z "`lsmod |grep $module`"  ||/&& {do_stuff...}
# Notice the "`" for the subshell command, and it is surrounded by double
quotes
# Pick either || or && to determine if the condition is met or not met and
then "do_stuff".

Finally, a subtle gotcha, a variable in single quotes will tell the shell to
ignore the contents within,
and double quotes will tell the shell to interpret within the quotes...
For more info, from a bash shell command line:

]# help test
]# help if
]# help [

Hope this helps,
Ken

Re: PHP

2002-07-22 Thread Reuben D. Budiardja

Well, try the following:
Make sure you have the module in the httpd.conf, using the following
line in the load module section:

LoadModule php4_modulelibexec/libphp4.so

Check the line like the folowing:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .inc .html

And then check if your file has one of the extension specified above.

error: depmod: *** Unresolved symbols

2002-07-22 Thread William Thies

I try to install two loadable modules in Redhat7.2
(kernel: 2.4.7-10smp)

After the installation, they works fine.
But each time when I run the command "depmod -a"
I will got below error information:
*
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.4.7-10smp/kernel/drivers/char/admxrc.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.4.7-10smp/kernel/drivers/char/cometmem.o
***

What's the reason? And how to solve it?

Another question.
In debian, there is a file /etc/modules/ where to put
the loadable modules, which will be loaded at boot
time.

but in redhat, there is no such a file.

How to do the same thing?

I write a script in /etc/rc.d/, it works, but I am
still wondering if there is a standard way to do that?

Thanks very much

It is ipchains. I followed your instructions and discovered upon
running ipchains -L that my system is set to accept smtp, http, ftp,
ssh, and telnet (although I have the telnet service disabled in
xinetd). There is no mention of IMAP or POP3 there... should there
be?

Your clue set me off to reading the ipchains HOWTO. Could I add a
local chain and put IMAP and POP3 there?

learning new stuff here... Many thanks for the help.

How to assign actions to keyboard buttons?

2002-07-22 Thread Petr Kubecka

Hi All,

I am trying to figure out how to assign actions to keyboard scancodes in
RH7.3. Is there a daemon that reads the keyboard and executes actions
(programs) based on the scan code pressed? I know how to do it in X-windows
but I want to be able to do it before launching them.

Real world scenario- some keyboards have additional keys liken play, skip,
stop, etc. and I want to assign them to cdplay or similar non GUI program so
that it can command the CD player.

Thanks!

7.3 boot error

2002-07-22 Thread Roger

Doing a 7.3 install on an Intel D850EMV2 mboard. 2 Gigs memory. at first
boot after install it displays the kernel info then gives
'error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory'

/ is using only 1023 cyl.

using grub, tried an install using lilo.
It's a new system that came with WinXP, booted fine (well, for
windows).
Tried removing the 2 Gig memory, went with the default 256M that came with
the system.

any ideas?

Personally I cannot comment upon the RedHat Firewall setup (but it seems
ok, Ive not seen anyone moan about it, unless they choice the wrong
settings).

I always use my own setup and chains.
The good thing about setting it up from scratch is you can trouble shoot
it easier rather than going point, click off we go, than panaking when
it goes wrong, as you don't know where the config files are etc. ;-)

I would recommend using the default rule of DROP for everything and then
allow connection to 127.0.0.1 (otherwise local services will bite the
dust), then setup you're rules one at a time and then test, then add
some more.

But *Remember* where you put the rules has a major effect, for example.

If you decide to block outgoing requests to port 53 (DNS), then decide
to allow web access after that rule, its gonna barf!, as we are blocking
the ports.

Another thing I do when testing new rules is to log each action
(regardless of what they do) using the -j LOG --log-prefix switch, ie:

I use predefined settings in my firewall (makes it easier to read)

/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i $EXTIF -p tcp --dport 445 \
-j LOG --log-prefix "SMB-DROP"

/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i $EXTIF -p tcp --dport 445 -j DROP

That logs and drops incomming SMB requests as 'SMB-DROP', so in
/var/log/messages I know that that rule has worked, this can be applied
for the accept as well.

Hope that helps

Mark

If you're a newbie, I recomend you start with lokkit (the RH firewall
administration GUI tool). Then learn a bit about firewalls and see if
you really need more capabilities.

If you already know about firewalling and iptables, I would recomend to
drop lokkit (which uses ipchains) and set up your firewall from scratch
using iptables.

I suppose you could say firewalls are a sort of god! ;-)

It really depends upon what you wan to use, eith GUI or command line
based.

I would recommend using iptables over ipchains,
Its IMHO got loads of advantages over iptables (some being):

1. Can use statefull inspection
2. Treats all chains as separate
3. Easy to setup

You have to tell syslog to accept remote connections.

edit the /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog file

change SYSLOGD_OPTIONS="-m 0" to SYSLOGD_OPTIONS="-r -m 0".

save it and do a "./syslog restart" (no quotes).

You'll need samba installed to print to a Windows printer, IIRC.
Once installed, try running printconf (or, if you're console-only like me,
use printconf-tui). That should make it pretty self explanatory on how to
add the printer.

Is it ipchains or iptables?

/sbin/lsmod | grep ip*

it should list one of the above

then run:

there are no firewall rules set there at all. At least there are no rules

Nigel, just type an ampersand at the end of the command line, i.e.:

foo &

This makes it a background process, and returns immediately to the
command line for additional command input. Might slow down your system,
if you have too many commands running in the background, or if one of
them represents a processor/memory intensive task.

Anthony,
Just thougth about how you would inline encrypting text, not just
signing. How do you handle this using VIM, if I might ask? Since I
have GPG in my .muttrc file now, it is automatically taken care of using
the newer PGP/MIME method, but I do not have a clue on doing this
inline within vim.

Thank you for the inline vim signing method, BTW..

init and services

2002-07-22 Thread Nigel Peck

I'm just getting to grips with RedHat and I have a couple of questions
(hope this is the correct list)

In the 7.3 reference guide the boot process is described, namely init
runlevels. It gives the example of runlevel 5, and shows that when going
to init 5, services including httpd, smb, named and nfs are sent a stop
command, which I'm assuming stops the daemon. I know I'm understanding
it wrongly somehow as I'm sure there's no way the web, samba, dns and
nfs servers get stopped when going to init 5 but I don't know what I'm
missing. Could someone please explain the difference between K* and S*
sym links in the rc.d directories?

My second question is, what is the recommended way to add a new
service? (I can't find it in the manuals)

Thanks
Nigel

ip alias dont work

2002-07-22 Thread Hernan Brun

I've just installed Redhat 7.3 and IP alias dont work
In the web I've noticed that the IP Alias is depricated with 2.4.x and is
being replaced by a firewall mechanism (source: IP Alias Mini Howto), no
other
information given.

However, when I tried a manual network configuration i.e.

/sbin/ifconfig eth1:0 192.168.0.2
/sbin/route add -host 192.168.0.2 dev eth1:0

it still works, so at least its still being compiled into the kernel by
redhat. However, the redhat scripts in init.d are no longer supporting the
use additional interface configuration files for aliasing like ifcfg-eth1:0
??

Can someone cast some light onto this please.

Hernan

Now that is a slick way of doing it. My GPG is totally handled within
my .muttrc file.. I like this idea of putting it in the .vimrc file. I

Weird High System Ussage: Command "w" shows a high usage but top doesn't show anything.

2002-07-22 Thread Jose Vicente Nunez Zuleta

Greetings,

I have a weird problem with a couple of Dual Redhat 7.2 machines; Both of them started
to show (not sure since when) a high usage number but the CPU or the IO looks to be
normal.

Here is the output of my w command and my /proc/loadavg:

[root@lnxdb0001 proc]# w
 11:11am up 8 days, 21:37, 1 user, load average: 4.00, 4.00, 3.95

[root@lnxdb0001 proc]# cat /proc/loadavg
4.00 4.00 3.95 1/62 4828

But the ps -ef or top doesn't show anything rare:

Re: Does not recognize memory installed

Hi,

I am sorry that I haven't been specific enough. You should be adding like
this:

something here.

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hda8
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="mem=128M"
read-only

..something here.

The above is just an example. You may not have every line there. You should
be adding to the section of the linux kernel you are using or
booting. I hope this will solve your problem.

Best,
David

Well, try the following:
Make sure you have the module in the httpd.conf, using the following
line in the load module section:

LoadModule php4_modulelibexec/libphp4.so

Check the line like the folowing:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .inc .html

And then check if your file has one of the extension specified above.

RE: Red Hat Linux 7.3 Freeze Up

2002-07-22 Thread Adam Ellis

Chris,

I had a similar problem on a fresh install (not an upgrade) of RH 7.3 on an
AMD Athlon 1Ghz machine. Tried reloading from scratch but ran into the same
problem. It was not immediate, but while using KDE3 it would eventually
freeze up. I could still get to a console to kill the process. It seemed
to start with kpanel ceasing to respond and would lock up shortly after
that. I ended up just switching to GNOME for my desktop and have not run
into the problem since.

My brother runs an AMD Duron 750 and has never run into any problems with RH
7.3/KDE3.

shutdown and smart ups

2002-07-22 Thread Gail L. Lange

Hello
I have a RedHat 7.3 linux machine connected to the serial port on the
smart ups using the powerchute software. For low power, I have it run a
script:

echo "running" >> myfile
ssh shut@system1
ssh shut@system2

The machine doing the monitoring (call it A) has the user powerchute which
is how the ups service is running under. Now there is a usershut on
the other computers (linux boxes) who thru sudo have the right to run the
shutdown command. The shutdown command is placed in shut's .bash_profile

Now when I run the script from machine A as powerchute as the user
(meaning I type in ./runmyscript ), the script works and shuts down the
other systems. However, when I run it on low power thru APC's smart ups, the
script does not. (I mean that I go into the smart ups configuration and say
on low power to run the command runmyscript). When I look at the
/var/log/secure file on system1, I see that machine A closed the connection.
I cannot see why this occurs. (I know my script is running since the first
command in the script, the echo, works.)

(ssh'ing was all set up as far as A accepting the server key from system1
and there is no need for a password.)

Thanks,
Gail

Just make sure you have the kernel source installed.

A quick Guide:
--

Its really pretty easy, just down load the src rpms, then:

rpm --rebuild NVIDIA_kernel-version.src.rpm
rpm -Uvh /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/NVIDIA_kernel-version.i386.rpm

same for the GLX drivers.

edit the following file: /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

and remove any referance to:

Load "glcore"
Load "dri"

and make sure you have

Load "glx"

(other wise no 3D acceleration)

in the modules section near the top.

where it mentions you're card, change the driver to read "nvidia"

also around the bottom remove any reference to DRI, as this clashes with
Nvidia's own drivers.

Also if depending upon what card driver toyu want to load add the
following option to the Monitor section:

Load "NvAGP" "1" # Nvidia Driver ( I use this one)

or

Load "NvagP" "3" # try internal kernel driver, then Nvidia (I think)

If it doesn't work check out the XFree86 log:

/var/log/XFree86.0.log( I think)

and also run (to get the status of you're card & drivers):

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0 # Find out what you're card is

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status # See what drivers it using

Hope that helps

Mark

use a recent mod_ssl version that fits (check ftp.redhat.com for it)
should be mod_ssl-2.8.7-4

PGP Batch Mode

2002-07-22 Thread Stephen Spalding

Hello all,

I realize that this is a little bit off topic, but I
thought I'd try anyway...

I've downloaded pgp 6.5.8 onto an AIX 4.3.3 box, and
I'm trying to get 'batchmode' to work. What I want is
to be able to encrypt/decrypt files without being
prompted for whether or not I want to use the current
encryption key or anything else.

Here's one command that I've used:

# pgp -es
