I'd guess it's because you're crontab script doesn't know about the the
the no-passphrase key you generated and the shell you use to test it,
does.

You might need to use shosts to accomplish this task. Just a guess on my
part. If I'm wrong, somebody should pipe up.

My 2c on this.

If you have a bad phone line (like here in rural Australia), try a modem
like the Maestro Woomera. It has special circuitry to match the phone line
impedance levels and adjusts as such on the fly. It also not only re-trains
down for slower speeds when the line gets bad, but also re-trains up when
the line clears. I've NEVER had a disconnect due to a bad line with it.

I'm sure they're probably not available overseas, and they are pricey
(nearly 3 times the price at $300 AUS), but with a 10 year warranty, and the
money I'm saving on re-connecting it's well worth it for me.

Regards,
Ed.

USR 5610 PCI works great for me. Using it with hylafax and works perfect.
Driver is in the kernel so no problems with hardware recognition.

wan routes

2002-08-03 Thread Andrew Judge

I have a WAN and a Linux server has only a default gateway which is not
pointing to a WAN router (just internet firewall that isn't aware of
internal routes). I can not ping the Linux machine from the WAN. If I set
the Linux machine to use the local router as the default gateway (or add
routes to the Linux route table), it works. Is there a easier way to get
this to work without having to change the default gateway. Really not a
problem, but just curious why it does this. I have other machines in the
LAN that can be pinged (also without the router as the gateway).

The simplest way to do this is to buy a Linksys 4-port router like the
BEFSR41 (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=23&prid=20).
Connect this to your DSL modem and then connect your Linux/XP system and
your W98 system to it. Now everybody sees everybody and they all have
Internet access. As an added bonus, you've got a decent firewall
protecting you from the bad guys.

the Linux/XP system has an Ethernet card already to connect to your DSL
modem (assuming it's external) but you'll need to add an Ethernet card
to your W98 system. These can run you from $5-20. The BEFSR41 runs for
$69 at MWAVE.COM and Linksys has a $10 mail-in rebate going on right
now. Mwave has 100Mbps Linksys NICs for $17.50 and they've got a $10
mail-in rebate too.

This has always been the case with the updates dirs. It typically means
that there have been multiple updates since the release. I have done
several things to work around this while keeping my install tree updated
so that all new network installs will automatically have the newest
versions.

There have been several scripts posted to the list that automate the
process of moving the latest ones to a dir. I have ended up creating an
installtion tree that is really hardlinks to the correct package, either
the original or the latest one from the updates dir. FWIW rpm pukes on
symlinked packages.

This senario leaves all packages intact for trouble shooting /
downgrading and saves a bootload of harddrive space.

You're suicidal unless you're on a private network. Your server *will*
be used for things you did not intend for it be used for.

That said, man ftpaccess. Carefully read the wu-ftpd howtos at

Same thing when you simplify to "ssh -v [EMAIL PROTECTED] echo hi" ?

Can you please send a diff over cron's and your shell's output on this
(simplified) command?

Let me try one quick shot: Under cron your environment is different to
what you have in your shell. In particular the PATH variable can be
different. So, just in case you have multiple versions of ssh installed
on your system, and cron's rsync called the other one than your's did,
this could be an explanation. Check "locate ssh".

It seems then that the bug is still in official versions of the linux kernel.

The netfilter team have provided a kernel patch but it has not been accepted
in the official kernel. There is also a workaround. Info on both can be found
at the netfilter homepage.

Just found the following at:

a clean fix is being worked on, there is a sufficient workaround:

Hei

Perhaps you should say what medium you wish to back to if you want
a precise answer.

Generally tar is a popular tool for back-ups. There are others of
course. As always stfw and you should find lots of stuff. I found
an old article in the linux gazette which you might be interested
in:

  http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue47/pollman.html

The february 1996 edition of the linux gazette has a several
articles on backing up. Find it at:

  http://www.borg-cube.com/lj1996/notables/feb/

or go to the linux journal website:

  www.linuxjournal.com

and seek it out there.

Take a look at your httpd.conf file - it should contain something like
User nobody OR
User httpd OR
User apache

Because Apache binds to port that is lower than 1024 (privileged port), it
has to start as root. It then drops its privileges and runs as the user
listed in the config file.

Moreover, you don't need to start it by hand - use the startup scripts
available in /etc/rc.d/init.d (and /rc3.d \ /rc5.d) to kick it into gear as
the system loads up. Default redhat install of Apache is started with the
/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd script, which is called (depending on runlevel) by
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/Sxxhttpd where xx is a number.

Well I placed a bit on a Creative Labs v.90 external serial. Its
hardware driven. Does anyone else have this type of modem? If so what kind
of problems did you have with it running under Red Hat? Do you need a
special driver? Just a few questions. Thanks for the input guys.

On 6.2 it probably would be a little more work. However the 7.x releases
have ext3 support built as a module. They also include the tools to
create the needed initrd.img so that the ext3 module is available at boot
time.
The original poster asked if ext3 support was available in the Red Hat 7.1
kernels. For the 7.1 release, modular ext3 support is available in the
stock kernels and easily enabled.

I'm using a Multitech MT5600BA serial external modem. I don't know
if they are a current model or not, but this thing works great. I'm using
it on what appears to be a difficult phone line. My previous 56k modem,
a Diamond external, had lots of trouble at V90 connecting to and
staying connected to my ISP, but this modem works like a charm.

It looks like a tank, built into a steel box (no aluminum or plastic
housings for THIS device!), has real blinky lights AND a LCD front panel
display with a set of buttons you can use from there to program/configure
the thing using the display's menu system.

I got it last summer on EBAY (new) for forty bucks, though its list
price is apparently more like 379 or thereabouts.

Just took a look at ebay and see there's someone selling ONE of these
same modems there now, current bid is $29.99. In case you're interested,

If you can narrow the search down to a small number of known-suitable
modems, you may wish to take a look at ebay, i was amazed at the low
prices modems were going for there last summer when I bought this one.

My preference, FWIW, is for an external serial modem whenever there
is no crunch for serial ports. This way you can work on it, reset it,
remove it, replace it, without having to shut down/open up the box.

I've heard that there are USB modems that work well with Linux's USB
implementation (2.4.x kernel) but have no detailed knowledge or direct
experience.

Good luck!

Apache login as root

2002-08-03 Thread lrnobs

As a newbie, working in my basement disconnected from the world I have
logged in as root each time I start Apache.

The linux administrators guide I have been reading talks about daemons
running as root as a potential security hole and potentially distructive.

What do most web sites do? Do I create a user "Apache" and only let that
user have security rights to directories that it uses for its own programs
and content? Is there a how to somewhere for this?

Thanks,

Internal hardware modems I have used with linux:

isa:aopen itu/2. Works great and it's cheap, $40 or so. I'm using
it now.

pci:USR (3com) 5610 (retail) or 2976 & 2977 (oem) modems all work
fine. The 5610 comes with some extra software, and one of the
oem models doesn't come with voice but I can't remember which
one. The 5610 probably goes for about twice the price of the
aopen, and the oem models about $20 less. A good alternative if
you don't have isa slots on your motherboard.

As Mike notes above, any external serial modem ought to work fine. Of
the three kinds I'd buy the cheapest solution that will work with your
computer.

compiling Orbit for gnome-2.0

2002-08-03 Thread Mugurel Tudor

I want to instal gnome-2.0 from sources (I only got the sources, and a
dial-up conexion, so don't tell me about the rpm's) and I am stuck at
compiling Orbit2-2.4.0 . My compiler is gcc-3.0.2, with the CFLAGS
-O3 -march=athlon -funroll-loops -fomit-frame-pointer -fforce-mem
-fforce-addr -finline-functions
Runing
./configure --prefix=/opt/gnome-2.0/
--includedir=/opt/gnome-2.0/include/glib-2.0 , I have the following
error:
(---cut-here)
checking for popt.h... yes
checking whether byte ordering is bigendian... no
checking alignment of CORBA_octet... 0
configure: error: Failed to find alignment. Check config.log for details
Well, what should I do ? Did I forget to instal some package or what ?
/opt/gnome/2.0/lib is in the /etc/ld/so/conf/, ldconfig run after every
package's compilation, /opt/gnome-2.0/bin is in the path, so what's the
problem ? I have allready instaled the following packages:
pkgconfig-0.12
glib-2.0.4
gtk+-2.0.5
gtk-engines-1.9.0
libxml2-2.4.22
libxslt-1.0.18
libIDL-0.8.0
and now I am stuck at Orbit. What should I do ?

I've seen something similar once, but it was a hardware problem. The Linux
box had a faulty NIC. When it was up and running, it would spew garbage
packets all over the network (and I think netatalk exasperated it for some
reason). Brought everything on it's segment to its knees.

Without more information about your setup, though, this is a tough call.

updates wrong

2002-08-03 Thread Martín Marqués

I don't know where to report this, so I'll do it here, 'cause I know there are
some RH techs.

I'm doing nightly updates of the RH 7.2, 7.3 updates, and I found the the 7.3
updates contains to different versions of glibc* and nscd*. This shouldn't be
like this. If I download all the updates and do a rpm -Fhv I get an error
just because there are to different versions of these rpms.

This is the output of a ls glibc*

Re: Hardware Modem needed

2002-08-03 Thread Dantin

Thanks. Any particular brand works better? Just wondering I purchased a 7 CD
set from E-Bay and I'm going to Duel Boot with Windows 98 SE. I'm trying to
learn coding in C but cannot afford the visual C stuff. Rather go with gcc
gpl. Thanks.

*Almost* any serial modem will work. You could try a USR faxmodem.

Let me rephrase...any external, serial (not necessarily USB) modem should
work.

Sure, one can compile ext2 into the kernel and then load ext3 as a
module. But what about the journaling the root fs?

You'd have to configure an initial ramdisk to load the ext3.o before
the kernel gets to mount the root fs.

I guess on RH6.2 this won't be as trivial as making a kernel with ext3
built in.
