Uninstalling RH8

2003-03-29 Thread Josef Oduwo
Hello,

I have Win 2K, Professioal, Server and RH8 installed on the same machine
with GRUB as the bootloader. How do I uninstall RH8 and leave Win2K as the
boot loader?

Unbelievable *websight*
More than 330,000 security updates to date, "Major" service Paks every 2 weeks, sudden, unexplained reboots, thousands of $$$ for Windoze - the issue of Linux vs Windows doesn't even ariseon a more progressive note, could someone mention the major differences between ext2 and ext3?

Following the discussion over the last couple of days over the release
of RH 9 has been interesting. Question: Obviously most of us are
very fond of Redhat, at least up to 7.3 gathered by some of the heated

choice of a Linux distribution, what is your second and third choices?

 Just curious

2. Knoppix (drive install)
3. Debian
4. SuSE

I decided to dump Mandrake (don't ask) or it might have been number 2.

Number 2 listed there might become number 1. It doesn't have anything to
do with any directions RH is going (or perceived directions) as it might
be with some. I don't have any arguments with how they do things like
some of the so-called "purists" may. I've just been looking to move
along for a long while. Debian install gave me fits for a long time (it
didn't play well with some of my hardware). Knoppix installed fine and
is complete. After that Debian played nice, too.

I'm also considering Gentoo. But it can't make the list until I have the
patience to get it all installed. That's something I gave up trying to
do on my other machine once already. it takes a long time since it all
has to be built up from a bare-bones setup.

RH will probably still stay around since I'm most familiar with it and
I need familiarity to keep some server stuff working. It might lose out
on the desktop real soon, though. Like in a couple of weeks.

True, true, the address given was incorrect. And someone could have pointed him to the quite obvious trailer that is put on to every email this list gets that is as follows:

Works now!!! Monitor won't work with RH8...

2003-02-17 Thread Josef Oduwo
I was able to solve this problem this way.

Because I have a generic monitor, it was not probed during set-up.
Apparently I selected this (unprobed monitor) as the default instead of
specifying the exact monitor...

RH8 call tell that the grahpics card is Intel 845 but I had to further
specify the drivers (i810) for this.

Thanks for the help Edward, Jeff and Todd.

 Personal_Opinion
Any on-board video that is not supported by the main XFree86 servers
should be bypassed in favor of a supported video card. I often threw in a
decent Trident card ($30-50) into all SiS systems until XFree86 started
supporting SiS video directly, and saved myself a world of pain.
 /Personal_Opinion

Amen to that Todd! Please note I do not disagree with you.

However, it is a shame 845 is not supported properly. I have to admit I love
the boards. Stable as a rock.

But, yes, I've thrown an old TNT2 in my server to have no hassles with X.
Works fantastic.

I though the problem could be with my videocard (a 64MB Intel Integrated

ExtremeGraphics 845GL) so I downloaded the latest Linux driver from the

Intel website but I cannot run this.

Why not?

Well, I see wrong colors and either a garbled or no screen at all.

I have put the refresh setting as 60Hz which goes with the monitor specs. Do
you think I should do a re-install?

When you say flickering do you mean you may see the colors and such of
what would make a good display but the screen is not stable?

If so, then it sounds as if the refresh settings in your XF86Config file
is incorrect. What are the specs for your monitor and how does that
compare with what is in the file?

Is your video card even supported? Is the garbling only in X, or at your
console, too? If you have trouble at the console, it's either your video
card or your monitor/cabling.

If you have on-board video, have you tried using a PCI or AGP video card
instead?

Your monitor is not returning valid information when probed. No biggie, as

Complete novice: Monitor won't work with RH8

2003-02-11 Thread Josef Oduwo
Hello,
I have just done a new install of RH* for the very 1st time. However, when I try to "redhat-configure-Xfree86" to work with my monitor. I get the following message:
Couldn't start X Serverddcprobe returned bogus values
ID: OEC15dbName: noneetc etc
And if I try again I get a "DeprecationWarning" and gettaken back to the text prompt. Is this a problem with RH8 or my monitor ( I am running Win2K on another partition for a while and it has never given me any problems with the monitor.
What can I do?
