RE: An idea I've been tossing around....

2000-07-12 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

Hi!

Although I only know the basic usage of RPM, there is one feature which I
would like on any package manager. That is, to -in a more or less
automatical way- install the available packages require for the package been
installed to work properly.

For instance, I have an old version of SuSE and I wanted to upgrade XFree on
it from RH 6.2 RPMs. I got dependency problems, so I tried to install the
other packages, and each of them gave me further dependency problems.

Just an idea, anyway.

RE: Linux Machine

2000-07-12 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

Take a look at www.compgeeks.com . They used to have very good deals on
refurbished PCs.

What you require depends on what you want to do. I got a couple of boxed to
play with: an AMD 5x86 with 8MB and a 541MB HDD running 6.0 on text mode
(Emacs and Octave -and DoomII =) -) and a 486/66 with 24MB that runs X (no
gnome or kde).

The guys at compgeeks had some PPro dual boards that you may want to try
under Linux, or some cheap vectras that you may use to assemble your own
cluster at home :))).

RE: New Distribution [LONG]

2000-07-04 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

I consider RedHat to be the most flexible and easy to use and update of the
Linux distributions I have tried.

What I agree is about the poor support service. I really think it is not up
to the quality of the software RedHat offers. And, as 800 numbers are only
available from within the US (not sure about Canada), when I have required
technical support, I either have to wait a couple of days for e-mail answers
or pay an international toll (and you are lucky if you don't get an
answering machine that keeps you waiting for 20 minutes...).

Another example of poor customer support is that I bought my 6.2 Deluxe
directly from RedHat (I made the online order before the product was
released), and my installation CD came damaged. I have been asking for a
replacement for weeks, but I am still waiting...

In summary, at least from my own experience, RedHat offers a prime quality
product with a second class customer support.

RE: new to linux

2000-07-04 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

Hi!

I guess I can be of some help on this one, as far as I am not a computer
scientist, but an engineer that uses Linux for normal client work.

Ok. Graphical vs text mode works the same on Windows world than on
Linux/Unix world. Why most people uses the command prompt for doing things,
is just because it is pretty much faster and flexible than using graphic
tools. Yes, you need to learn some commands, and learn how to look for help
in your system shell, but that's the price to pay for speed and flexibility.

Think about formatting a diskette on Windows. You have two choices:

1. Open "My Computer" icon. Wait. Right click over the diskette icon. Wait.
Select "format" from the menu. Wait. Check the *few* options you have
available on the graphic frontend. Wait. Close all the windows.

2. On a DOS shell, type "format a:". Wait. All done =) (and you have access
to all format options from DOS).

Just same principles appy to Linux. But you have an advantage: you can use
KDE instead of GNOME, or use other window manager such as ice, 9wm, twm,
fvwm, or thousand other options available.

Now, about the guys who write on this list, well, they are mostly guys who
live from either developing or system administration, and when you have a
server with thousand users is when the speed and flexibility we are talking
about really matters.

Anyway, learning the shell prompt is not so difficult, and, if you decide
for it, the reward is amazingly better that what you imagine.

Well, this is a hardware issue. Plate capacities in Watts mean the highest
consumption it can take. In case of the computer power supply, you are more
than probably not using all hardware at the same time, so, you wont be using
the plate capacity. If you require all hardware at same time (all disks,
CD-ROMS, CDRW, Optical disks, etc.), then you require the power supply to be
able to give you the 300W or more you need. But, as this is not normal, you
wont be using all the Watts your power supply can give.

On the other hand, load on the monitor is more or less constant, so it is
more than probably designed with a full capacity power supply, this means,
it must be consumming the plate capacity all time.

It may eventually get "fried" anyway. Protections have a reaction time, and
depends on how long the peak current lasts, that is how your protection
system will work. You can even get a peak current of over 5 volts in
your system, but for so a small amount of time, that it wont hurt anything.
On the other hand, the protections you have on your system are for
overcurrent, not for overvoltage...

You are just decreasing the posibilities, but it wont be 100% secure.

Better read small printing. Anyway, an insurance for computer stuff is very
cheap (at least where I am =) ), and it can cover anything from burn-outs
due to power failures up to burn-outs due to liquid spills on the
equipment...

> something from APC at least, but has anyone ever tried to collect any

Well, pretty easy to prove if you have a power line grapher, but that is not
an item all of us keep at home. It is mostly used in big industries. Three
main outer reasons may produce a computer system burn-out: 1) an incorrect
wiring of your home electrical system (poor grounding), 2) a lightning, 3)
an electrical supply power failure (company issue, not very common).

Make backups, and take a general insurance if you are in doubt (it can cover
other houseware, too).

> > Hm, I'm still wondering how/if any machine with a spinning

Of course, you will not get 0dB, but almost noiseless can be obtained. It is
just a matter of design. Nowadays, cases and systems are designed for space
efficiency, rather than sound acceptance. Make a test: change your disks and
power supply from one case to another, completely different shape, and you
will notice (or better measure, if you have a sound metering device)the
change in the noise produced.

On the other hand, noise is not limited only to the box, but it is an
environmental issue (I used to work with this kind of analysis for machine
shops some years ago). So it is not how much noise is produced by the
computer itself, but how sound waves behave bouncing around in the room
where the box is located. I have seen situations where you eliminate noise
drastically just putting an object in a corner of a room, as well as I have
seen dot matrix printers working silently on a room, but producing noise 200
ft away (noise amplification phenomena). In other words, noise is a
complicated science by itself.

A very simple thing you may try out is to place your computers, specially
tower cases, over a thin styrofoam base. This will usually free stresses
produced on the case due to vibrations and surface imperfections (the case
is usually located on a floor not perfecly leveled).

"It all depends". My ISA SCSI cards do not boot. I mean, they require some
other media to boot (as a floppy or IDE drive) and load the modules. On the

SCSI. I can not assure this is always true, just observations from my boxes.

RE: RH on a 386?

2000-05-20 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

Hello, Morse!

I am setting a nice box for myself in a very limited system. It is an AMD
586 (no more than a 5x 486) with 8 MB of RAM, a VGA card, an IDE 541 MB HDD,
and a 48x IDE CD-ROM, and a US Robotics 14400 bps internal modem. Actually,
everything came out from the deepest parts of my closet... (Just need a
monitor. I guess an old monocrome one will do, if I can get one
somewhere...). If I add a zip drive with the /home/my_account in a 100 MB
zip, that would be great!

I am going to set it up with Emacs as main working environment. It will do
great for running Octave, C/C++ programming, email, www, and Latex text
processing, everythinin text mode. As this is going to be a stand alone
machine, this system will do nicely.

I suggest you to install RH 5.2 (custom) unselect all extra packages, and
select individually what you need. Then remove services & packages you don't
need, recompile the kernel (if you know how to, else, it is a nice
experience to learn! =) ), and eliminate other unneeded stuff (for instance,
more than two virtual consoles in my system is a waist of resources).

And, if you are really worried about security in such a system, make the
adecuate upgrade work.

There are a couple of mini-HOWTOs you would like to read: Small Memory,
Savin Space and Upgrade.

BTW, you can even run X in a 486/66 16 MB. Just choose an small window
manager, and configure it nicely (ICEwm or twm will do fine). You may
install xfm and some other glitches. But, personally, I would stay using
emacs instead! =).

Hi, Jim!

As far as I remember, smallest 5.x install was 53 MB. Processor is not a
problem, and I run an X system with a 486/66 and 24 MB, so I would say with
existing RAM it is possible. If I were your friend, I would either buy a
bigger hdd (a friend could have a bigger drive) or an IDE zip drive (a 100
MB unit costs about $60). You can also try using the box as a NFS diskless
terminal, or using it as a router (there is a linux version for this purpose
that runs on a single diskette). You may like to take a look at sunsite for
the mini-distros.

Try doing a warm boot after this "yes". Other option would be to use a
rescue disk on rescue mode and try running fdisk (Linux) that way. Other
thing I would try is to check the BIOS for a HDD FORMAT option, and see if I
can do something from there. Check for your hdd manual for a hardware clean
method (re setting a jumper and boot or something similar). What about
mounting the disk on another box that has Linux up and running and try a
repartition from there? Try also an fsck on your drives. Maybe it can fix
some problems on them. There is actually a checking option that does
read/write tests that will destroy all information on the hdd. A nice way to
clean the drive.

Hope any of this helps.

RE: X windows problem in red-hat 5.2

2000-04-27 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

The information you are giving is not enough to help.
You require to know the SiS model number of your video card. Actually, the
XFree86 that comes with RH 5.2 will not support many SiS cards (there are
some versions of RH after 5.2: 6.0, 6.1 and 6.2, which is the "current").

After looking at the model of your video card, take a look at
www.redhat.com/hardware for the compatibility list. Look for intel hardware,
XFree86 video cards, and look there for yours. If it is not listed there,
you probably wont be able to use XFree (no X Windows). You may still use
other graphic environments, but they are commercial (You'll have to buy
them).

In case your card is listed, you have to configure your card. Run
Xconfigurator as root for that.

RE: swap

2000-04-27 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

I've never done this, but should be something as:

1.) Run fdisk, be careful to modify only your swap.
2.) Remove swap.
3.) Recreate swap the size you want.
4.) Use the remaining space for a new partition.
5.) Move there the data you want.

RE: Parallel Connection

1. Please turn HTML off when sending messages to Linux lists.
2. Look at your /usr/doc directory.
3. If you have RH 6.2, there is a CD with all the documentation.
3. www.linux.org is a good place to search for them, too.

Hi!

I've run 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, and 6.2 on my 486/66 box. I don't know what
were the memory restrictions for 4.2, but, do you have enough ram?

Other thing you may try is to boot from a Win98 start-up floppy with CD-ROM
support and run the autoboot batch file in dosutils in your CD and see what
happens.

I have had problems with the install disks (actually, I am having such a
problem with my new 6.2 disk...).

RE: FTP access FLAME

2000-03-09 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

Hi Charles!

Well, "Manuel" is my name and "Charles" is yours, and I feel pretty much
better knowing I am writting to "Charles". But my point is, what can you
expect from someone that calls himself "Jack the Ripper" and signs "JtR"?

I am not refusing the idea about long signatures, as I consider them
interesting and totally understandable, but, if someone wants to sign half a
page long because it makes him happy, that is not hurting me -or anyone
else- in anyway (I can read messages up to the signature and erase the whole
message before reading the rest of it)(well, yeah, someone may get hurt in
his liver, but I just don't want it to be me =) ). Getting even ten lines of
text signature on 100 messages should not really affect your downloading
time. HTML? well, that is another story.

Friends, we are doing a world wide fight here, and all this stuff about open
source and Linux is just the modern expression of FREEDOM itself. We can´t
be so blind of not seeing what is really going on: we live in an information
society, and this is the way wars are supposed to be in our times. We can
not win if we do not give an EXAMPLE of respecting everyone's freedom
OURSELVES.

If you want to start your own crusade against long signatures, well, it's up
to you. You are free to do that, too. But I believe we should all learn to
be tolerant.

Respectfully yours,

-Manuel. ( <=== my name =) )

Well, I guess it is just a matter of taste. For instance, I believe that
someone who is not able to sign with his name is insecure of himself and is
not supporting his ideas. But, as far as:

reboot your PC, and at LILO prompt type:

LILO: linux single

then, system will start, and at the prompt write:

passwd

and be sure to type your password correctly. After that, you may reboot your
system normally.

[OT] Some help with LATEX.

2000-03-08 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

I am writting some docs in Spanish using LATEX, but I don´t know how to
change the defaults from English to Spanish. For instance, LATEX
automatically writes "Chapter" and I need to change this for "Capítulo".
Another example is when I create the table of contents: I get "Table of
Contents" as heading and I need to change it to the Spanish equivalent
"Tabla de contenidos".

Is there any way of doing this? Does any body knows about a LATEX mailing
list???

TIA,

RE: Help me

2000-02-11 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

Hi Indra!

Ok.

First, make your Windows partition with fdisk. Install Windows on this
partition.

Second, run the RH installation software, and use DiskDruid to settle your
Linux partition.

You will need, at least 3 partitions (ok, could be more or could be less,
but three is recommended minimum to begin playing). One is /boot, about 10
MB should be enough. Another is swap, (you do not set a mount point. You
mark the partition type as swap, and system set it up). Make your swap
partition same size as your core (RAM) memory. If you have 128 MB, you may
preffer to make 2 swap partitions, 64 MB each. The rest of the disk may be
used as root partition, which mount point is /. Use the "grow to full disk"
option on DiskDruid.

Now you should be ready to continue!!!

Good luck, have fun, and don't hesitate to ask anything else you may need.
BTW, there is a "redhat-install" list, where guys are more tolerant to
installation and newbies questions.

Regards,

-Manuel.

Hi,

  I have a problem with redhat 6.1 instalation. I have a HD 4.3GB.
I want to use 3 GB for Windows and 1.3GB for Linux. What must I do
in the partition instalation? What I need to type in mount command?
When I choose OK in partition instalation there is a message appear:

No Root Partition

You must assign a root (/) partition to a linux native partition
(ext2) for the install to proses.

What must I do? Can you guide me for this partition?

Title: Disk Druid

Robert: using DiskDruid after you finished your
installation will ruin your partitions, and erase your information. If you want
to keep your actual information, you should look for a repartitioning tool such
as PartitionMagic or FIPS.

RE: Quick disk partitioning question

2000-02-04 Thread Manuel Antonio Camacho Quesada

Hi!

Nop. Ok. You partitioned your HD when installing the operating systems. Once
you have written the partition table (once you finished fdisk or diskdruid
on installation), the partitions remain the same size you specified. In
other words, partition sizes are not dynamic.

Want to play with BEOS, well, I can think about three solutions.

1. Install a new hard disk and install BEOS on it.
2. Repartition your hard drive and leave some space for BEOS, which means
you will loose all the information you have on your hard disk and reinstall
everything (I really mean *everything*). On the other hand, you may want to
uninstall only one OS (uninstalling Winblow$ is definitely an option - or
should I say THE option?? =) ) and use the space occupied for it's
partitions to install BEOS.
3. Look up for some tool such as fips or partition magic to resize your
partitions and make some room for BEOS. You should better make BACK UPS of
your files, because, although you are not supposed to have any problem with
this tools, you may eventually loose your data. THERE IS ALWAYS DATA RISK ON
RESIZING PARTITIONS.

Can you unspecify it in Linuxconf or something? I'm thinking I'd like to
play around with Beos a bit, but Linux and Windows seem to have consolidated
my hd. I did check the grow to fill option for my home partition, that's
why. Thanks in advance.

Being sincere, I haven´t noticed that. I usually mark my swap partitions as
grow to full disk, and space is distributed on same quantities, as I make
usually same size swap parts.

It means that any space left after all your partitions are made will be
assigned to the partition (or partitions) marked as "grow to full disk".

My colleage at work is trying to set up a linux server. RH6 boots the pc
installation goes smoothly until dd. Firstly adding a filesystem to the
drive (max limits of space) says it cannot do since there is no space. The
way around this is to use "delete" then after this the type of filesystem
appears listed in diskdriud window (the very one it could not create).
Anyway so having created the filesystems click on ok to create them move on
etc. dd crashes with a signal 11 error.

Whats going on?

PS the disks are less than 3.5gb in size and were still formated in msdos
format. There are some bad sectors according to dos one of the disks.
