It was a simple question, yes, but born out of laziness primarily. Every
single one of us posts questions out of _ignorance_, so you're excused on
that count. But had you only done a simple search by Google, the Red Hat
list archives, or MARC (http://marc.theaimsgroup.com) you would have found
out in seconds that which you were asking (and which has been beaten to
death with a rock twice over recently). In addition, you would not have
taken up anyone else's time, which is a courtesy valued by those others
asking _real_ questions.

Ignorance is welcome. Laziness is rude. Kindly consider everyone else's

Please don't top post.

This is a REALLY busy list, and the norm here is to at least try to find
a solution. especially to a question that has been discussed and
rediscussed already. It is a sort of "Teach a man to fish sort of
deal" I thought that the reply was entirely appropriate.

I understand that the redhat archives are actually searchable now but
have not been in the past. If you have trouble I usually use the
archives at :

As a debian and Redhat users I have 2 main comments.

Debian seems so much faster, even on slower hardware. Do other people
thing that Redhat seems to be less optimized? I am just a linux newbie
myself but the speed is very noticable.

Apt. Apt-get just works so well. Automagically resolving dependencies
and installing etc, that RPM just too difficult.

If debian was more learner friendly on installs and support hardware
easier, I think I would switch.

As well, I think this on topic as it has to be the users driving the
development. Isn't open source about learning and building upon work of
others? IF we want something in Redhat from other software, where else
would we discuss it?

What kind of FUD is that? Motorola is a publicly held company with over
2 billion shares outstanding. MS and MOT hav edoen a few deals in the
wireless arena but I have never heard that MS held a substantial
interest in MOT let alone a controlling share. According to Morningstar
>25% of the shares are owned by funds but I could not find anything
about additional ownership and Dont feel like digging through the SEC
filings to see if any one company owns a huge chunk.

Additionally, I feel like MS owning/controlling the company that makes
the cpu that apple computers are based on would have made the news.

Please keep blanket FUD statements like this to yourself.

Personally I wouldn't mind listening to comparisons
between Red Hat and Debian and don't think it's that
off-topic since this is a general discussion red hat
list.

I remember when the FUD about Red Hat occured that
time, and remember that it was mentioned that
Motorola, owning a sizeable share of Red Hat, won
itself a seat on Red Hat's board. And who owns
Motorola? you guessed it, Microsoft...

You can't, at least not in the taroon beta. bind is in a separate
channel. For example, on my RHEL WS beta, I tried to install
ldap-server and it wasn't there. It's there on the RHEL AS beta channel.

You're wrong :-)

It most definitely does *NOT* have a $179/year price tag.

It's not missing all of the server applications, even if it's identical
to RHEL WS. Here's the list of server apps that I took from the taroon beta:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ewilts]$ grep server up2date.showall.ws
mysql-server-3.23.58-1.i386
openssh-server-3.6.1p2-18.i386

rsh-server-0.17-17.i386
rusers-server-0.17-31.1.i386
telnet-server-0.17-26.i386
vnc-server-4.0-0.beta4.1.1.i386

httpd, sendmail, and postfix are also included. For a small office, WS
is pretty good - no FTP server or named, but other than that you're
pretty close to everything you could want. You've got ssh, sql, and web
servers, and you could use zoneedit or something like that for your dns.
If you want an ftp or dns server, you can add that easily enough.

> I'm not saying the WS version is a bad prodcut...it just isn't the

I'm suspecting that we'll like the new product more than the old RHL
product, but of course we'll both have to wait and see what the pricing
is like and what the rest of the details are.

I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong but the workstation version is NOT
equal to the old Redhat Linux. It sounds like the WS version is missing
all of the server functionality that was in RHL. It also costs $179USD
which seems high compared to the boxed version of other distros like SuSE.

I'm not saying the WS version is a bad prodcut...it just isn't the same as
the old RHL.

You think in the long run Fedora will actually get off
the ground like Red Hat Linux did?

I'm very sceptic about Red Hat's move and although can
understand why Red Hat would do such a thing, don't
agree with it as it directly affects me and my use of
Linux.

Maybe for the long term it'll be time to move to Suse?

Correct. They are dropping the "end user/consumer" version for the
Fedora Project. The only RH "products" will be the RHEL line.

> This would seem rather dumb on RH's part, since I doubt they have enough
> sales to support the company RH has grown into people wise just by

I agree that RH needs a product priced for the SOHO and small business
markets. This is something IMO they currently do not have in their RHEL
line of products.

Only time will tell if this turns into a disaster. I'm going to miss the
boxed sets. I have bought a boxed set for every RH release since 5.2.
Hopefully RH will bring them back in the future in some way. Plus now
the only way I can support RH (unless I have a future need to an RHEL
product) is to buy a subscription to RHN. I prefer to do manual updates
and don't use RHN. So I guess I end up buying something that I will
probably never put to use. :-P I guess I will consider it the price for
a "Fedora boxed set".

My big concern is how stable the Fedora Project is going to be with the
frequent release schedule.

I have not installed any of the Fedora test releases, but I will
download and install the final release. This first release is
essentially what would have been RH 10. As for releases after this one,
my current attitude about the changes is to "wait and see".

of Red Hat Linux essentially no longer exists. It has been replaced by
"Fedora Linux Project". The first release of "Fedora Core" is scheduled
to be released November 3rd.
