[Repeater-Builder] Possible interference ??

2004-01-03 Thread RSGilmore

Wondering if anybody's had experience with this gizmo:

well-meaning brother-in-law gifted me with a "Wireless Weather Station
with 433 mhz outdoor sensor" (official Weather Channel product !) -- of
course, the radar went up immediately !!

I've restrained myself from tearing into the packaging (and rendering it
un-returnable), pending opinions / horror-stories from others...

What say, guys ??

You should see it on a spectrum monitor. Its all over the 430-470 mhz band
every 10 seconds. Wipes out all of my 440 and 460 monitors. Mine in an

I too recieved one for Christmasand did the same. Contacted the manufacturer
about the exact frequency and other concerns. Supposedly xmits on 433.93Mhz.
Never seen it on Spectrum analyser so can't speak to that. Had another ham
friend with one running and he reported no interference on close frequency
receptions so I opened and installed mine. So far hasn't been a problem of
course I not running anything directly on 433.93mhz either.

My 2 cents.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Possible interference ??

2004-01-03 Thread Mike Morris
A little over two years ago I was given an large LCD "Atomic Clock"
(has a built-in 60khz WWVH receiver) that had a remote outside
temperature sensor on 433.9mhz and gave Ed Haire W1RFI at the
League a heads up email. He's the RFI interference guru there and
had never heard of such an item so I borrowed a neighbor's digital
camera for a few hours and sent him a few digital pictures.

What I have looks a lot like this but is all brushed aluminum...
http://www.gormangiftgallery.com/digatclocwit1.html

My unit's temperature sensor is a small white square TX (about
3 by 3 inches and 1 inch thick) that uses a pair of AAA penlite
cells (that last about 2 months - mine now lives in a garden
tools closet powered by 3v wall wart... a piece of doweling cut
to length with 2 thumbtacks stuck in the ends for contacts
makes a nice battery replacement and is a reversible
modification... )

Europe has several channels around 433.9x for lo-rate pulsed
stuff like this. Mine chirps for about 1/5 of a second every few
minutes, and I hear 5 or 6 of them in the neighborhood.

This Christmas I saw a dozen differently packaged variants
everywhere from Brookstone (an expensive toy store) to
Costco (big box retail warehouse store) to the local Radio
Shack.

Stuff on 433 has been popular with the low-power/low-range data folks
(like these clocks/weather stations) for a number of years now. Pick
up a copy of any electronics mag (Circuit Cellar, Nuts & Volts, etc.)
and you'll see 10-20 advertisements for low-power data RF modules that
can be interfaced easily to any serial device or to a microcontroller.

Weather stations are probably the largest deployed base of users, with
robotics/machinery control and other data experimenters in second place.

There are modules for different bands, some shared with Hams, some not.
Another popular option is 900 MHz.

All are Part 15 devices but many of the experimenter's kits or the raw
modules themselves don't come with antennas attached -- and the people
building projects with them as hobbyists won't know the RF power limits
and ERP limits imposed on them by this and have surely used gain
antennas, etc... for some projects.

Does anyone have the service manual for the Kenwood 701A dual band mobile.
I just fixed one by changing the 440 front end fet with the 144 front end
fet (they are both the same)my buddy really just needed his UHF side
working. But I would like to replace the bad fet (now in the 2 meter side)
with a new one. The markings on it only say 3RS and nothing more.

Thanks in advance.

3RS is a good marking for a SMT device. This is a GaAs-N-FET made by
Matsushita Denshi Kogyo Co. It is in a SOT-143 package and is of type

that these were a common transistor and also used by Icom and Alinco. These
were a high failure Item.

Wish you luck and happy hunting.

Consider also that a dummy load accepts all manner of frequencies without
complaint, being non-resonant by design, while a tuned circuit (like an
antenna or duplexer cavity) will complain about harmonic content and
spurious output. Perhaps the transmitter wasn't producing clean output.

When looking for the connector for the AC/DC in on my TS-520, the gal
informs me they don't carry the Jones (I think) plug. However, she
tells me she can sell me one of those "adapter thingys." I was making a
DC cable, so of course, she points out the inverters.

No Thanks.

Yeah, that smell of the new catalog! Came in a brown wrapper. Still have a
few of the old ones, can't seem to be able to throw them away.

I remember when we found out that Lafayette's cost code was "PHARMOCIST"
then we knew just how low to pay for an item. Rode my bike the 5 miles to
the store in Livonia Michigan three times in one day after the right parts.

We only have one parts store in the entire Detroit area that I know of,
The Electronic Connection in Westland. Their prices are at least three
times what I can buy them for on the internet. They won't be long. Mostly
sell CB's and radar detectors to truckers. There are Newark and RS
Electronics outlets but they cater to the automotive companies. Newark
stocks very little here due to warehouse taxing. RS is expensive too.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Possible interference ??

2004-01-03 Thread f1nfy
Here in Europe, there are so many use of this kind of transmitter.I have a
friend who own a repeater on TX 433,175 MHz in a urban area,he didn't have
any complaint from surroundings(Perhaps, nobody knows origin of
trouble!).Many times that's our system (own station or repeater) who shut
off radio link between RX and TX.Manufacturer of radio modules use AM
modulation with wide band filters. It's cheaper than FM narrow
bandwidth.Center of this free use band is 433,920 MHz but you could find
system from 433,020 to 434,780 MHz.Usually, troubles from this use to amateur
are coming from wireless headphones. It works in wide band FM like broadcast
radios.
Because of this frequency band is full of users and with so many trouble in
EMC,new frequencys allowed are from 863 to 868 MHz.

Happy new year to all repeater builders and 73.

There used to be a land mobile radio surplus (2-way radio) place
in the greater Los Angeles area back in the late sixties ?? called
 Mann Communications and Electronics.

One fine day, the owner Jim Mann, and I were discussing the prices
he sold stuff. Then he asked me how did I sort out the prices
 stuff should be?

I replied "I take your price and divide by two!"

He didn't speak to me for a couple of weeks.

Well, that was how I did figure the price ... just because he
 didn't like it ...

Was known as C & Art Roberts Electronics ... I think.

Somewhere around here, I think I have a C&A Electronics business

After looking for about 23 seconds, I found the 'Delete' file

Sure do remember Lafayette radio in Jamaica, New York, I was 15 and just got

you could buy three resisters and they seemed happy to sell them. Then the
CB/imported electonics craze started and it seemed to go downhill from

Those of you out there who are fortunate enough to be able to get
the current Electronic Engineering Master (Catalog) every year,
don't toss out your older copies. Seems the 2004 issue is now
listing most if not all of the manufacturers by their URL's.

I looked at some of the URL's - and a few of them don't have a
land-line telephone number listed anywhere on the site. That's
where I have found the older EEM issues are quite handy.

  As you might expect, I have the 1997, 2001, 2002 & 2003 EEM's

[Repeater-Builder] LMR-195 as interconnect cables for repeater

I've been looking at LMR-195 to use as a substitute to RG-142/U for
interconnect cables in the repeater system. It's less lossier than
it's RG-142 counterpart. Anyone have any experience on this cable at
all? I'm also looking at RG-400. What do you think? Thanks.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Off topic questions

2004-01-03 Thread Neil McKie

You are quite correct ... was C&A Electronics ...

Don't remember when / where I bought my Red Book or the Yellow Book
for that matter either. When those books first arrived on the scene,
I already had 'collected' a few of the original factory manuals. As
you may guess, I still have those manuals too. As far as I know, I
never had an FMTRU-5V manual ... the Red/Yellow Books were handy for
 that too.

Speaking of the 5V ... the one I had, I modified ... ever so
slightly ... by changing my added power connectors, the radio could
be used on either 12 volts (factory was ONLY 6 volts) or 110 VAC /
 external power supply.

Might you need that modification diagram for one of your iders?

Remember when there was a GE version of the Red / Yellow Books? I
have a set of those too.

Adam, the connectors for the power cords on my

The P/N SHOULD be S-312-CCT.  That P/N is

If I recall the 12 pin plug on my old 520 was the same plug as on some of
the Reel to reel tape machines at the radio station where I worked. The
machines were MCI, Otari or Ampex, with my best guess being the Otari for the
remote control connections.
Since so many radio stations no longer use the reel to reels, you might find
some of the plugs in the local radio station's junk boxes. Can't hurt to ask.
I'll check my junk boxes at work Monday.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] LMR-195 as interconnect cables for repeater

2004-01-03 Thread Virden Clark Beckman
It requires the crimping tool which now most everyone has, and be
careful folding tight corners as when the aluminum foil tears open you
are left with plain old coax. For this reason I use only double shielded
cabling on my repeater projects, when something slips out of place and
strains that cable I can re-use it but on the lmr stuff you have to get
chewing gum or kitchen foil to wrap around it till you can replace it.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Antenna vs 50 Ohm load

I have a spectrum analyzer available which showed clean transmitter output
into the 50 Ohm load. Never looked at the output spectrum when the
transmitter is connected.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] To tune into a dummy load or the antenna...

2004-01-03 Thread Adi Linden
I am jut playing with this and find the differences between dummy load and
antenna rather dramatic. Interesting is that the radio matters, too.

[Repeater-Builder] SWR between radio and duplexer

2004-01-03 Thread Adi Linden
Is the SWR between radio and duplexer supposed to be perfect? Seems like I
cannot achieve low loss through the cans and low SWR at the transmitter
output all at the same time. SWR between duplexer and antenna is perfect
at all times, though.
