Verify that you have the correct voltages as Kevin suggested. The Micor uses a tripler amplifier and if it has a low output it will not key the PA. To verify that it.  Look on the front of the Micor shelf disconnect the left RF cable coming from Pa (output of the Tripler).  Connect a wattmeter with a dummy load to the BNC connector of the Tripler (not the PA cable). You should see 1-2 watts when you key the transmitter from the station control. If not check the voltage going to the tripler should be 12volts.  You can check the exciter by removing the tripler and plugging a wattmeter in its place (1st band pass filter). Verify that you have RF there. This will be in the VHF range about a 1/2 watt or so. Do not rely on the fact that you can hear the exciter on your handheld. If you have RF at the exciter and nothing at the output of the Tripler and you haven't changed the original FREQ then you guess it the Tripler has gone south.  You must be very careful with these Triplers to insu
re you all ways have a load on the output i.e.: PA or dummy load. The Tripler can be repaired see the Repeater-Builders Web site. You can check the output of the Tripler stages by connecting a wattmeter or using RF probe on your voltmeter to check the different stages of the tripler. I've repair a couple of the Micor Triplers and they come back up and work fine.
Good luck

Thanks Mike. Correct me if I'm wrong, when I engage the transmit
switch on the station control card, shouldn't the meter readings
change?

I have another micor here at the office (UHF community repeater) and
I inserted the test set into the exciter. This was yesterday when I
did this, but I think that readings on all 5 test set settings were
0 until I engaged the transmit switch on the station control
card...then got the correct readings throughout the test settings.
See, these two aren't behaving the same (course this repeater has
its own problem...no audio on repeat...local audio but no repeat
audio). Like I mentioned in an earlier reply to a fine fellow, it
seems as if the exciter is excited all the time regardless if I
attempt to key it up with my handheld or use the station control
switch because there are no changes in meter readings (manual
says "key the transmitter with the XMTR ON pushbutton on the
portable test set" which I did.

I also checked the PA with my handheld and it powers just fine by
the way.

Heres the story

GM300 8 channel models . 16 pin accessory connector pin 8 is COR with
the mic off hook and pin 8 becomes COR/PL with mic on hook.

GM300 16 channel models (or greater). The 16 pin accessory connector is
programmable in RSS and you can use pins 4,8,12 (maybe more) to do
things like COR and PL detect INDEPENDENT of the microphone hook switch..

We have a UHF Micor with the unified chassis in operation here. Our
exciter is on all the time too. It will modulate any audio sent to
it just like the repeater is actually on the air, as long as you are

read somewhere that this is normal, true?

I mention this so that you won't be led down the wrong track if this

[Repeater-Builder] Re: DPL levels

2004-01-18 Thread skipp025
Yes...

I have found most sub tone and dpl decoders
will decode well below 100Hz source tx
deviations. I've found it much very practical
to set the encoder deviation to ~500 Hz.

The overall un-modulated (voice audio)
deviation might appear higher if you add
the dpl or sub tone onto a carrier with
some synth or phase noise already on board.

Did you place a meter in line from the

tune for min reflected power with the
duplexer properly terminated into a 50
ohm load?

If you use the above method, any practical
cable length should work pretty well. If
you don't there will be a modest amount
of reflected power which results in heat.

Typically DPL/DCG is set for 500-750 hz deviation. Most commercial radios,
if they are setup for decode, will notch the passband of the DPL/DCG. If the
DPL deviation is set too high, then there may be of the DPL passing through.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: looking for ..

2004-01-18 Thread Eric Meth
If this is just for a Paging Transmitter why not use a regular radio
with a DC Remote Control adapter?
Unless you want to build a UHF repeater and use it as the paging
transmitter as well.
Then your post should indicate you are looking for a repeater with
the capability of 2 wire remote control.

Bob
You are correct when you key the station control card you should see change on you meter.  However it sounds like your exciter is being keyed all the time. What cards do you have in this chassis? If you have a time out timer pull it. Also if this was a repeater pull the Squelch gate card. Continue on with what I told you earlier checking the tripler and rf stages.
Good luck

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Motorola R100 for Ham Bands?

2004-01-18 Thread Gary
Yes, it can.
Will need a hacked version of software to change band split down
to Ham band. (See batlabs for hack instructions)
Will possibly need to re-tune receiver/exciter if moved very far
in frequency.
Do not use RIB to program. The R100 takes it's own computer to
radio interface cable. (See Batlabs for schematic)

Looks complete to me, Dave. Frame, driver, final board, filter board,
power cables, and all. Looks like a base station model, too, as it has a
T/R relay.

With respect to what Mike is looking for, the power control circuit is
on the driver board, so I guess you're looking for one that's missing
only the final PA board and filter board?

I say it looks dead because all the components are removed that you

That's what I found on my 6 meter repeater. Exciter oscillator runs all the

Re: [Repeater-Builder] hp plug ins

2004-01-18 Thread f1nfy

Hello Ian,
you need to have 8755 plug-in model to tune
cavities.It's a scalar network analyzer.But in add,you have to have a sweeper
(8620 or old 8690 with plug-in depending frequency used) ,three detectors
11664 with a dual directional coupler and a modulator 11665.
By the way,it's a system could be useable for
return loss and forward loss but it's limited by dynamic range(about 60 dB) and
frequency precision (+ or - some hundreds of KHz).I think,but it's very
expensive, that you need to have a scalar network measurement system like that
plus a spectrum analyzer for better dynamic range with a synthetyzed
generator or a tranceiver for frequency precision.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Replacing MASTR II Exciter

2004-01-18 Thread mch
You may be thinking of the wire needed if you use an EC ICOM in a base
station, as the compensation line is not in the base station as it is in
mobiles. I think I said that correctly. I've replaced PM exciters with
PLL exciters, and it was a plug-n-play matter. (plug, tune, set levels,
and play actually)

If this is a repeater (where there is no antenna relay) there is
a simple way to fix this... unground the F1 TX channel element
pin and connect it to the antenna relay control lead. This way
when the TX is keyed the channel element is turned on.

International Crystal
Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Note that the Micor uses channel elements - modular crystal
oscillators - not stand-alone crystals.
If this repeater is going on a hill in a non-temperature-controlled
environment you will want to send them the elements and get
them temperature compensated

While the page was oriented to GE's oscillators, the last three
paragraphs are very relevant:

Mike, good idea. Its definitely annoying to have the oscillator

things that was near the bottom of the priority list to take care of
sometime, but that trick should be easy and quick to do... Thanks

The 8558B spectrum analyzer plug in would be an excellent choice.
You can use it to measure over the air signal levels, check
transmitter purity, look for interference, etc.

You would also need the 8444A opt 059 tracking generator [external]
to create a complete stimulus-response system for aligning filters,
duplexers, etc. The system will have a dynamic range in excess of 90
dB. and cover from 0.5 to 1500 MHz.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: #$%#$F@#$ Micor

2004-01-18 Thread mch
However, not doing the mod does make the stability solid as a rock (no
pun intended). If the channel element has to start up when the repeater
is keyed, it has to stabilize. You may never notice the difference
except on a monitor or heterodyne with another repeater, but it is
there. If your spacing is tight (15 kHz or less), it could be a factor
with your neighbors. I've seen many commercial units (in the commercial
bands) go pretty far off frequency - albeit only a spike.

I actually modified my Scraptronics (AKA Hamtronics) to do just the
opposite. The drift on UHF was so bad, I modded it to leave the exciter
on and switched the TX stages a step or two 'down the road'. I could
hear it at the site, but that's all.

If your repeater TXs CTCSS or CDCSS, you never hear it anyway.

Personally, I would never do the mod if I didn't live at
the site (which, of course, I know some people do), and then,
only if it was CSQ TX (which I would 'mod' to CTCSS first!).

[Repeater-Builder] Please help with building a kenwood repeater

2004-01-18 Thread Mike

I am looking into building a repeater out of 2 kenwood mobiles. Do both mobiles have to be the same? Can they be different models? How would I connect them to a controller without a data cable coming out the back of the radio? Is it possible to use the mic jacks? Which controller should I use for a very very small budget? I would like a CW id on the repeater. A possible phone patch later, but not right now.

I am totally new to repeater so please make it simple. I am hoping for something like a plug in and its on the air type thing, with exception for programming the controller and radios.

Thank you in advance for you help, Mike

True, However, I also came up with a solution to keying the Channel

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Please help with building a kenwood repeater

2004-01-18 Thread Glenn Little WB4UIV
Mike

You will need to be able to get to the PTT line in the transmitter
(available at the mike plug), Discriminator and squelch from the receiver.
These are usually available only from the inside. Keep in mind that the
transmitter only has sufficient heatsink for 5-10% transmit time. This is a
maximum of six minutes of key down with 54 minutes of cool down each hour.
You can push this a little, but reliability starts taking a nose dive. You
can add fans to the transmitter and might be able to get rid of enough heat.

Most any of the controllers should work. Make sure that the receiver has a
helical front end or that you budget for additional filtering in the duplexer.

Wish you luck in your venture.

  Hello Ian,
you need to have 8755 plug-in model to tune
  cavities.It's a scalar network analyzer.But in add,you have to have a sweeper
(8620 or old 8690 with plug-in depending frequency used) ,three detectors
11664 with a dual directional coupler and a modulator 11665.
By the way,it's a system could be useable for
return loss and forward loss but it's limited by dynamic range(about 60 dB)
  and frequency precision (+ or - some hundreds of KHz).I think,but it's
very expensive, that you need to have a scalar network measurement system like
that plus a spectrum analyzer for better dynamic range with a synthetyzed
generator or a tranceiver for frequency precision.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Motorola R100 for Ham Bands?

2004-01-18 Thread Brian Poellnitz
Hi Bob,

The R100 can be easily retuned to 70cm. Trick is, you must modify the RSS
program in a hex editor to allow programming of frequencies below 450 MHz. The
how-to for that is found at http://www.batlabs.com/r100.html. After modifying
the RSS, program your frequencies and re-align per the manual and you should be
ready to go.

Good luck es 73's
