2004-08-27 Thread Davies, Doug A FOR:EX
Thanks to all for the replies on using Yagi's as repeater antennas. All
reports seemed favorable so I think I'm going to give one a try. I have a
5-element one all ready to go.

[Repeater-Builder] Low-pass audio filter for repeater transmitters

2004-08-27 Thread no6b
A while back there was a thread here regarding a LPF that someone designed
as a post-limiter modulation filter. I believe Kevin bought the boards &
parts & sold all of them & intended to offer more after making improvements
to the original design. For some reason I can't find the thread in the
archives; I must be using the wrong words to search for it.

I have a need for such a board in a rather short time frame. Does anybody
have any of these that they'd like to part with or have the design so I can
build one? Or Kevin perhaps you have the updated design ready?

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Looking for amplifier suggestions

2004-08-27 Thread Neil McKie

I suppose if you are real happy with the thought of a 130 watt
 output repeater, so be it.

I used to use a 110 watt output mobile on the 2 meter band. I
now use a 25 watt mobile.

At one time, my two meter repeater had a PA deck problem. We
changed the operation from the 40 watt output to just the exciter
= 0.4 watts out. None of the users complained as they didn't have
 a clue.

Have you ever tried operating your repeater at minimum power?

FCC Part 97.313(a) An amateur station must use the minimum
transmitter power necessary to carry out desired communications.

Why do you folks have to ask questions like that. Some users DO have
radios over 100 watts. Some repeater owners DO have voting receive!!
Please just answer the guys question. I know that MOST repeaters ARE
over 50 watts and some even have pre amps on them. A preamp of just 3

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Yagi's For Repeaters?

2004-08-27 Thread mch

There are some repeaters that use yagis - mostly in terrain such as you
describe. I don't know about the stacking, but stacked or not, the yagi
will 'aim' your signal where you need it. After all, there is little use
'pounding' your signal omni into the sides of the mountain. You may as
well get the extra gain down the valley. Maybe by stacked, they meant
one pointing down the valley and another pointing up? There are few
pitfalls. The only one I can think of is decreased range to the sides
(again, into the mountains) and back (which is why you may want another
pointed in that direction).

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Yagi's For Repeaters?

2004-08-27 Thread skipp025
Done all the time.

I would avoid the stacking yagi option unless you buy
a pre canned package with instructions from a known
antenna company with a track record of good engineering.

It's hard to properly stack and phase yagi's when done
from individual parts. Spacing and cable harness problems
will cause you much grief.

The best option for your VHF Signal, might simply be
a decent quality 5 or 7 element beam. You'll be surprised
how wide the usable beam width is.

Yup-it'll work. A group here tried it back in the 70's. They had two
4-element cushcrafts pointed E/W along Lake Erie. It was solid 10W
mobile coverage for 50-60 mi along the lake (or more), but less then 10
mi to the south was gone. Unusable.
I would say take your existing omni, and with a power splitter, split a
4-element pointed the way you want and see if it does what you want
without sacrificing too much locally. Play with separation a little,
too. Phasing will likely be an issue.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Looking for amplifier suggestions

2004-08-27 Thread russ
We have replaced all of our amps with Crescent Amps (14) on the Metro-Comm
repeater system and they all have given us zero problems. (bad power
supplies)
Very happy with them and the dealer in NJ we got them from. Great service
after the sale. They even called us to see how we where making out. But a
word to the wise if they offer you a power supply to go with the amp run a
way! They sent us duracom power supplies at 1st. They made enough noise on
the two meter repeater in put to course the receiver to open up. They did
replace all of the power supplies with Astron at no charge.
Good luck,
Russ, W3CH

Re: [Repeater-Builder] New UHF repeater antenna suggestions

2004-08-27 Thread russ

There are still vendors who stock the below cut in the Ham bands. 440 to
450 MHz you should buy one already in the Ham bands.
Why spend your money on a new DB products in the wrong band to start
with?

Would i want to go with the 408-A (406-420) or the 408-B (450-470)? Do
you know if either of these antennas are tunable by the end user? The website
is not clear about that. The repeater is going to be 441.850/446.850.

  Thanks again for your input!

will give you decent gain without the extra length and cost of
theDB-420. It has 4-bays (8 elements). It will give you good
close-in coverage with HT's that the higher gainantennas can't give. If
most of your potential users are 10-15 miles away,the DB-420 (8-bays, 16
elements) is not the best choice.ChuckWB2EDV-

Re: [Repeater-Builder] New UHF repeater antenna suggestions

2004-08-27 Thread russ
Hey Bob,
DBc is gain over a cruchcraft. just subtract the gain listed on a Ringo
ranger, Diamond or comet by 6.1 to get dbd. I know all about dbi just
subtract 2.7 or 2.9 to get dbd and so on. True gain is all ways in dbd, Its
most of the time a joke dbc. But buying a DB products is no joke they will
give him years of good service and work very well!
Very best of 73,

[Repeater-Builder] Motorola Service monitor

2004-08-27 Thread JJ

I am looking for manuals for a Motorola Service
monitor comparable to the S1327a/b - s1200
series.
I have a friend who has one that the frequency
synthesizer pll does not lock
and we would like to get it operational again to read deviation on our FM
radio's.

I can send a photo but I am sure we are not
allowed to post photos to the list
Could I post it to the photo's or files section so
that I can find out a bit
more on the unit and hopefully a source of documentation for it ?

Thanks in advance,
Jon
