Re: [Repeater-Builder] CTCSS decode/DTMF tone problem

2005-05-19 Thread Joe Montierth
See if it does the same thing with another radio that
has a built in decoder. Make sure the repeater isn't
muting tones, or muting PL on reception of DTMF. Make
sure the repeater PL input is directly on the
modulator, and not at a previous stage where it could
be getting clipped or limited in the presence of a
strong tone. Test to see if whistling will cause the
same problem as dtmf.

That's correct. They are 2 and 3 pieces that screw together with a bell type

Certain NHRC controllers will function as a simplex controller, but
you will need a control opertor to be FCC legal.

Radio Shack also made a simplex controller no frills controller in the
$60 range.

[Repeater-Builder] CTCSS decode/DTMF tone problem

2005-05-19 Thread Paul Holm

I'm working on adding Echolink to our 2M machine
(pl 146.2) here and am using a Kenwood TM-241 for a link radio.  This rig
does not have PL decode so we added an outboard Transcendient CDC-01
decoder board.  Using the RX out pin off of the mic connector for
discriminator tap.  PL decode works great except when DTMF tones are
sent through the repeater.  As soon as DTMF is sent, audio from the decoder
drops out.  This is not happening when testing on a simplex frequency, only
when sending DTMF tones through the repeater.  Any ideas about what's
happening?  Thanks.

The frequency response of a 2 way communications system is well within the
frequency response of one of the 8 KHz sample rate ChipCorders.  The only
decision would be to select the longest possible message time.
The ISD1416 gets you 16 seconds, the ISD2560 gets you 60 seconds.  Both of

The RadioShack HTX-212 and HTX-242 could also do split tones as well as
the Icom 706MKIIG.  My Vertex VX-10's as well has the capability to have
split PL tones if needed.

Right-so far the only ham rig I've seen that can do split tones is the
last of the Azden radios. I have a 6M version, and it can do it, since
it programs like a commercial rig, just from the front panel. In fact,
in other countries where type-acceptance isn't an issue, I'm pretty sure
they sold the exact same radio into commercial service.

RE: Re: [Repeater-Builder] Simplex repeater hardware

2005-05-19 Thread Buley, Kenneth L \(GE Consumer & Industrial\)
A simplex repeater controller connected to a radio set for split operation
(different TX and RX freqs) CAN eliminate the problem of hearing everything
twice, at the expense of being careful not to "double" on the input freq. and
having a delay between RX and TX. HTs or mobiles programmed reverse split of
"repeater" radio will operate somewhat like a regular repeater, without the
simultaneous RX/TX.

Bob ("Hi Fibo!") and I talk a-lot. We eyeball about once a month at a
club meeting in Fort Collins. He's about a 40-minute drive from my
place. I've seen the factory and the lab, and even helped with some
of the assembly of the 7K product. Our club uses them for local
repeaters. I have been impressed with the functionality and features
of S-COM. I am looking forward to the 7330 and its siblings in the
near future.

Meantime, I'm still exploring the possibilties. I think I bug Bob at
least once every other week to see if anybody's traded up...

True, but there are instances where a SR makes sense. Quick deployment for low
volume comms is one. Rescue ops, public service events, etc...

Training BEFOREHAND is always recommended so that the users can become
accustomed to its odd behavior. PL is also recommended to keep the SR from
repeating everything on the frequency and annoying co-channel users.

I am glad to see Ken on the group. I studied his products a long time
on the web. He's probably got the most bang for the buck, and I DO
have some experience with the soldering iron, but the disclaimers in
his manual scared me a bit. It is worth the additional $100 for peace
of mind by having the whole board built for you. One cold solder
joint can ruin a ham's day. If I could eek out another $100 for this
project...

Have fun at Dayton! Seems everybody's there. (Not a good time to try
and buy repeater controllers, unless you happen to be in Dayton!)
