[Repeater-Builder] Success!

2006-03-21 Thread Dave VanHorn

I just got one of the newer Daniels MT-3 synthesized receivers over
onto the 440 band.

FWIW, here's what you have to do:

When you open the receiver, you'll see the preselector, which will need
to be retuned. Do the obvious thing there, the best you can with the
equipment you have. DONT pump a lot of RF through this one, it's also
the mixer!

The receiver uses an IF of 21.4 or 45.0 MHz, and can be set up for 12.5
kHz or 25kHz. You'll see this in a pair of information jumpers on the
bottom of the PCB, under the synthesizer (Huge can, can't miss it)

1: Figure out the magic number to program into the switches:

The radio is natively a 16 channel radio. If you have more than one
channel in it, that will be done by jumpers on the backplane, but the
first channel is set by four switches, labeled MSB - - LSB
You can't mess with the channel settings in EEPROM, but you CAN set the
first channel to anything you like.

The formula is F = "Base" + (IF * Switches) IF is either 12.5k or 25k
Figuring out what base is can be a little tedious if you don't know
what the receiver was set up for, but you can unscrew the cable out of
the synth and run that to a counter or receiver and work out the proper
settings.. For mine, 446.0 ends up at 1488 programmed to the switches.

Once you have the switch number, undo the retaining screws, and unplug
the synth from the board. Remove the cover, and reinstall on the board.
Power up, and tune the small adjusting screw with a jeweler's
screwdriver, till you see 3.5V on TP4 in the synth, then power down and
reassemble the can, and put the synth back on the board.

At this point you can do final adjustments on the preselector, and set
the squelch. To set the squelch: R115 does hysteresys, and R88 does
squelch level. Turn both way CCW, and start advancing R88 as you would
a normal squelch control, then adjust R115 to prevent any jumping in
and out.

So there it is for posterity.

[Repeater-Builder] crackle in a repeater tower

2006-03-21 Thread Ian Wells

Hi guys .Is there a way that you can locate loose bolts or fittings in a tower by having a transmitter txing on the tower and checking the tower with a spectrum anayzler with a beam for interference on other frequencies .I have a tower that crackles through VHF repeaters that are operating on the site and sometimes it affects uhf repeaters on site as well but i still havent found where it is coming from .It has to be something loose as it is worst on windy days any sugestions would be great

Re: [Repeater-Builder] MTR 2000

2006-03-21 Thread mch
The UHF models that cover 470 MHz are 450-512 MHz and will not go into
the ham bands at all. T-band coverage in my area is a must. Same with
the 29.7-42, and 35-50 MHz models for 10M and 6M respectively.

As for your statements that:

"In this respect, the low-band CDM and HT radios are not Ham friendly.
However, I have a Motorola MaxTrac low-band mobile that covers 50-54 MHz
very well."

This seems to pretty well echo my original comment of "It seems ALL of
the newer Motorola units are not ham friendly."

Yes, I have Maxtracs on 10/6/2/440, but I would like to upgrade someday.

Duane,

If you're still stumped, e-mail me your codeplug. I'll load it into a

Nothing is connected to the accy jack, other than a momentary switch to
connect pins 3 (PTT) and 5 (Gnd) together for testing. The radio is
transmitting into a dummy load via a double shielded jumper, and the
supply voltage is well regulated.

I will read the radio tomorrow and make note of the firmware version.
Will also locate a hand mic or make a test plug to key the radio via the
mic jack.

Thanks for the suggestions.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] MTR 2000

2006-03-21 Thread Eric Lemmon
Joe,

Don't be too hard on Motorola. The Professional Series VHF-K handhelds
(HT750, HT1250, HT1550) operate 136-174 MHz out of the box, and the UHF-R
handhelds operate 403-470 MHz out of the box. These operate over the
complete 2m and 70cm bands, respectively, as well as the commercial bands,
without any tuning or hacking required. The Professional Series mobiles
(CDM750, CDM1250, CDM1550) duplicate the same coverage as the handhelds.

I would like to be able to use a CDM mobile radio on 6m, but that is not
possible. The low-band "D" split CDM radio will cover 42-50 MHz very well,
but it cannot be programmed one Hz above 50.000 MHz. The interaction
between the CPS software, the loaded firmware, and the masked CPU prevents
hacking the radio out of band. In this respect, the low-band CDM and HT
radios are not Ham friendly. However, I have a Motorola MaxTrac low-band
mobile that covers 50-54 MHz very well.

My VHF and UHF conventional base stations are a CDM1550-LS and a
CDM1550-LS+, respectively, and they have given me reliable service. The
ability to mute quietly (without a squelch crash) while receiving a signal
from a non-Motorola system is one of the premium features of the
Professional Series. [It's called "non-standard reverse burst"]

Obligatory disclaimer: I'm not a Motorola dealer, and I don't have any
financial interest in the company.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Motorola CDM750 Mobile Tx Hang Time

2006-03-21 Thread Eric Lemmon
Duane,

I have a fleet of CDM750 radios in service, and have never seen this
symptom. I assume that when you say "...RICK out of the picture..." you
mean that you have tried keying the radio into a dummy load with the
RMN4025B hand microphone and on a known-good power supply, with nothing
hooked to the rear accessory connector. If the radio still hangs, then
there is a possibility that a post-PTT signaling mode has been inadvertently
enabled.

These problems sometimes occur in modular repeaters, if double-shielded
cables are not used, when the signal leakage keeps the repeater keyed. A
poorly-regulated power supply is another suspect. Of course, there may be
something wrong with the radio itself. I checked the SRN library, and found
no mention of either the problem or of a mod. What firmware version is in
the radio? You can see this on the "Radio Information" page only when you
read the radio, not from an archive file.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Vertex VXR-5000

2006-03-21 Thread Eric Lemmon
Mike,

CSC (Control Signal Corporation) is very much in business. You can purchase
an instruction manual from CSC, along with the PROM. The CWID-51B Automatic
Station Identifier is a reliable and flexible unit, and the only down side
of it is the requirement for a custom-programmed PROM. I doubt that CSC
would have interface information for a VXR-5000 repeater, since the external
interface connector is straightforward, and the manual covers all of the
pinouts.

Dunno anything about the MSF5000 repeater; I'm an MTR2000 fan.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] cable tv hardline loss question

2006-03-21 Thread Kevin Custer

Right...

Also keep in mind that 75 ohm cable has a lesser amount of loss for the
same size cable as 50 ohm.
And, for receive only systems, matching isn't quite as important.
And, matching transformers are easily built, for other terminal
impedances.
And, cabling lengths can be substituted for the stubs, for impedance
matching.
And, 75 ohm cable can be obtained, many times, for nothing.
And, if jacketed, works in duplex service as well as any other coax.

 Hi group,

Have two repeater problems to figure out, I am trying to
add an CWID 51B (CSC) to a Vertex VXR-5000 440 repeater,
looking for apllication notes for it. Sent an email to CSC
no luck yet, also need to change ID to my Call sign, IC still
 available, anyone know??

Have a MSF-5000 GMRS repeater that been in my attic unplugged
for a couple of years, would like to get back on the air
again, plugged it in, only TEST lights come, won't key up
 with a handheld near by,

 Any ideas out there

[Repeater-Builder] Motorola CDM750 Mobile Tx Hang Time

2006-03-21 Thread Duane Hall
I'm working on a CDR500 repeater, setup for unidirectional repeat. I'm
trying to use it in a voted repeater system, but have ran into a problem.
The CDM mobile on the transmit side has nearly 1 second of hang time. Even
with the RICK out of the picture, the transmitter is slow to drop. Is there
a parameter in the radio programming that I'm missing? I messed with
debounce and anything else I could find in the software with no luck. Is
this the nature of the beast, or is there a hardware mod I need to do to the
radio?

Thanks in advance!

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Switching PL on and of on a TS-32

2006-03-21 Thread skipp025
Off the decafe Doug, :-)

I looked at the circuit for methods to mute the ctcss
encoder output using a portion of low pass filter
section U3A.

[paste]
> Use a small (low cost - high preformance) fet like
> the 2N7000 or the same VN10KM (also VN10LP) (same fet,
> just a different part number) with a low on-resistance

> like the junction of U3A parts R35-C21

You could control the fet with the output status of
the decoder, but using a cos/cor input would allow you
to also control the encoder in carrier squelch repeater
operation. More inovative types could set up a cos and/or
ctcss decode control.

Grounding the input to the U3A filter at the junction of
parts R26-R27 & C20 will also work if you can be sure
the fet or optional transistor takes the output to very
near ground (to prevent ctcss leakage through U3A).

> Ground one of the mentioned locations when cos or
> encoder detected output changes and the encoder output
> should halt.

For the new to using small fet people, you should provide
two resistors, a capacitor and a diode to the fet gate
lead. A series 2.7k min value 1/4 watt resistor to input
to the fet gate, call it "gate solder junction A". At
the gate junction A position, solder a 470K resistor from
the gate junction to ground, which is also where the fet
source lead is soldered.

Parallel both a 1N914/1N4148 diode and a 220pf disc capacitor
with the 470k 1/4 watt resistor, the banded end of the diode
(cathode) pointing up/connecting to the gate junction A.

The resistors isolate and protect the fet, the diode prevents
excess fet gate reverse voltage (mistakes) and the 220pf cap
will help keep stray rf off the gate. The fet drain lead
is soldered to your choice of locations mentioned above in
the ts-32 board. My first choice might be the junction of
U3A parts R35-C21.

Small signal switching transistors also work ok, but you need
to ensure they switch on and off 100%.

cheers,
skipp

The TS-32 does not have reverse burst. You're thinking of the TS-64,
which does what you describe.

2006-03-21 Thread Bob M.
I thought I saw a PTT Input line on the TS32. When
this is grounded, PL is generated and the PTT Output
line goes low. When the PTT Input line is released,
the reverse burst is sent and PTT Output is released.
The unit will not generate PL until the PTT Input line
is grounded again.

Won't this control the PL encode on/off?

2006-03-21 Thread Doug Bade
The PTT input of the ts-32 controls encode If it is connected to
your rx mute gate it would track carrier input The factory
recommendation Coy referred to as I recall was for gating tx tone off
rx tone, which was connecting OUT 1 or 2 ( whichever is the correct
polarity) to the ptt input of the board. This allows encode to track
decode, and does so very well but if you are in carrier sq
mode, would not ever encode.. Connecting ts-32 ptt input to
station rx mute or an inverter ( or something on the squelch gate for
other vendors besides GE) if needed solves the problem.

You could use the speaker output, but it would be level sensitive
based on the volume control position. I have a nice vox cor/cos
circuit here I can scan and send you, but you need to send me an
email direct so I can see your full email reply address. Yahoo
removes the domain part of email addresses as read on the web for
anti spam protection.

Unless there is some place better that I don't see in
the ts-32 circuit... the encode mute method I mentioned
(as shown below) is a "right way".

Simple...
Find one 220 or 440 radio with both encode and decode
ctcss and wire it as a remote base radio into one of the
repeaters. Put it on a dummy load (termination) as enough
tx and rx signal will probably be available at the site
regardless of what you might think. You can even turn
the tx power down on the radio and still get a full quiet
signal into the other repeater.

cheers,
skipp

2006-03-21 Thread Jay Urish
Why not just a real repeater in the LMRS spectrum? Thats what we are
doing here in Flower Mound.. Http://www.fmcert.info

Its easy. 600bucks for the coordination and nobody has to worry about
callsigns. On top of that, if the two Denton County jamming idiots
decide to play with it, the Dallas field office is a lot more likely to
hamstring them.

[Repeater-Builder] Stumped.. Need help with problem.

2006-03-21 Thread Anthony L .Ferguson
Greetings!

I'm stumped with something and hopefully with the aid of others I'll
be able to get this projected completed. This project belongs to
another who is very interested in repeaters and helping the community
in case of an emergency.
The owner has taken C.E.R.T. training and wishes to add to the
already existing communciation system in place by my self and others
who are Amateur Radio Operators and who own amateur repeaters.

The project is a message store and forward system for a Motorola
Maxar 80 UHF transciever. The controller that was purchased is an
NHRC 3+ with a simplex controller mode option , which is the main
reason for the purchase.

The transciever has already been recrystaled for usage in the GMRS
Band. The owner has paid for the GMRS license.

With all the History behind me. Here we go.

The transciever has been modified so connection could be done to a
patch panel or controller.
1) Green -PTT
2) Grey - Ground
3) Orange -Delayed PTT
4) Brown - Mic Audio
5) Red - Discriminator Audio
6) Yellow - PL disable
7) Blue - Reciever PL detect Line
8) Shield - Grnd Radio Chassis

This is the information given by NHRC for the NHRC3+ controller.

1&2 the same +13.8 volts
3) CAS + carrier activated squelch
4) Fan control ( not used )
5) PTT active Low
6) Ground
7) Tx audio to Txmitter
8) Ground / Tx Audio Return
9) Rx Audio (From reciever)
10) Ground / Rx audio Return

Basically I'm trying to get the radio wired up to the controller so
the simplex repeater option can be used for the non Amateurs in the
area in case of an emergency ..

I have some of these figured out .. but need help figuring what goes
where ?? I'm asking, Please assist Thanks in advanced.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] FW: [rc210] Power sensor

2006-03-21 Thread Jeff DePolo

Don't have any of the Motorola power sensors, but I have a surplus of
Telewave and Decibel for various bands if anyone is interested. N male to N
female, with RCA jacks for forward and reflected. I know the Decibels have
adjusable pots for the forward/reflected output sample voltage, I forget if
the Telewaves do.

http://www.telewave.com/pdf/TWDS-3010.pdf (this only shows 118-512 MHz, but
I have the lowband ones too)

Sorry... Mike WA6ILQ has already asked for it. Keep your eyes on
eBay... they show up every once in a while. Wish I had more of them to

Could I interest anyone in a 1/4kW 6m PA of the GE variety? It will
be pick-up only in Stafford, VA. I may also have a 1/4 kW UHF /\/\oto
variety PA leaving if someone has something of interest to trade I am

[Repeater-Builder] CATV Cable rating

2006-03-21 Thread tony dinkel
Thanks for the link. I do not know what it is but I need a ballpark figure
to design around. Its already installed but I have no idea what it is, I
have not seen it yet. Its for a receiver link between two parts of a
multicoupler between two buildings. The run is around 500 feet. I am
figuring the resistives plus mismatch will put it about 10 dB deep.

Thanks,
td
wb6mie

You are probably asking for P3 CATV 500 cable. It is about 1.5 dB at
450 MHz.

Go here
http://www.trilogycoax.com/pdf/catv/spec_sheets/mc2/MC2_500.pdf to
check out Trilogy 1/2" cable, which is air dielectric and has less
loss than foam.

This cable will work just fine for a RX application.

CommScope .500 (1/2 inch) P3 cable is rated at 1.56 dB per 100 feet at
68 degrees F.

75 to 50 ohm transitions can be made by following this article:

Hi Skipp,
I just want to take from the speaker output of the RX radio, and
feed it to the COR cicuit so that I could activate the PTT on the
transmit radio, could you help me with the circuit?

I prefer to use Motorola GP300

Thanks

Why not put a 440 link radio at the 220 site. Terminate the 440 radio with a
dummy load rated to handle the power your radio can produce (plus some
headroom). You probably could use an ht, if it can take the duty cycle. As
close as they are it shouldn't be a problem. If the 440 machine is
"tailless" machine the this seems the logical approach.

Good Luck
