Re: [Repeater-Builder] very close frequencies seperation

2006-03-27 Thread Gareth Bennett

Ian, It sounds like you are building a back-back
link?

What type of equipment are you proposing to
utilise?
Is your linking site the only one with UHF equipment
present?
Is site #2 line of sight and at what particular distance? ...
Either way you wont need 25 Watts to link your repeaters, especially with yagis
at your link site as you probably will be able to do this on about 1 watt and
give you linking site receivers an easier time.

To recap,  What type of back to  back link gear
(Especially Rx) are you planning to use?

How busy is your proposed site?

Whats the path like between your link site and either
repeater?

This can easily be done.

Hi guys .I am trying to receive 473.575mhz from a 25 watt
repeater ,line of sight , 50kms away and and retransmitt it on
473.200 at 25 watt on another site.The transmitt antenna is a 6db
vertical ,9 meters above ground and the rx antenna is a 6 db uhf beam
1-2 meter above ground ,aimed at the 473.575 site  Is it possible
to notch out frequencies going into a receiver that are 275 or 375
khz off a uhf receive signal or is it going to be too close
to filter out the TX .

Thank You,

[Repeater-Builder] Fan cooling on PA

2006-03-27 Thread Daron J. Wilson
OK, this sounds like a simple question, but I can see advantages to both
solutions.

When adding a Fan on a PA heatsink, should I be moving new air in blowing it
onto the heatsink? Or is cooling more efficient when the fan pulls the
heat away from the heatsink?

Thanks in advance,

Daron N7HQR

somebody needs one).  The problem is that scanning long pages and
piecing them together in Paperport or some other program is very difficult and
tedious.  I started looking for a larger scanner to do tabloid

e-bay.   It will do 300 dpi and can also do 600 x 300 (I think).
It is slow (maybe 25 seconds or more, I have not timed it), but does a
good job.  It will interface with Paperport and other programs.  It
comes with a scan monitor that comes up when you select scan.  It is
simple to install.  I have used it to copy manuals.  Some of the
Motorola manuals with pages larger than tabloid are not always all one

pieces.  Sometimes the schematics just have to be scanned in two pieces

white because I have an HP5000 laser printer.  It is a 1200 dpi tabloid
printer with full duplexer and can print on both sides of the page.
I even used the Mustek to scan some x-rays and I opened the top and
put a small diffuse light about 2 feet above it.  The X-Rays came through
pretty good.  (I also have a Nu-Arc light table, but it is too heavy to
turn upside down and put it on the scanner.  There are three on
e-bay right now.  If somebody has another suggestion, I would be interested, but the
Mustek is fairly simple, just slow, but not as slow as scanning in two pieces

Why not just link the weather info to the site via a link from home
that way when it crashes you don't have to wait for the spring thaw
to fix it. Obviously the site weather is going to be pretty much the

well, you get the picture. It would be nice to have the weather for
the area where there are people.
I have been doing that for about three years now.

  Hi Robin,

I have the earlier RCA like the Super Carfone, Super Carfone 500,
Super Fleetfone 700 and 1000 and apparently some ML1000 & VeeTac.

Also in GE from the pre- Progress Line thru Mastr-pro, Exec, Exec
II and Mastr II, manuals in the EBI and LBI sections.

  In Motorola, I have from about 1946 through FMTR-80D & 140D,
 Twin-V, Motracs - 25-50, 67-88, 136-174 and 406-470, mostly ditto
with most of the Mocom anything, Micor 25 MHz up, Mitrek and
MSR2000, MSF5000 and some of the later stuff.

If I had the computer smarts you seem to have, the repeater-Builder
 web site would too.

[Repeater-Builder] OT..Kind of..Flat Bed Scanner Opinions Sought

2006-03-27 Thread Robin Midgett
Hi,
I have a significant collection of service manuals for various
commercial two-way radios which I'd like to scan into Adobe Acrobat
and make available via the Repeater Builder web site. The makes and
models include RCA 500, 700 & 1000 VHF & UHF, and G.E. models from
MASTR Exec through MASTRIII, Phoenix, MVS, and others.
I'd like recommendations on flat bed scanners suitable for scanning
these documents. I have two now that use the USB interface, but
they're slow, and they only accommodate 8-1/2" x 11" paper. A
relatively fast scanner with a larger surface (for those fold out
sheets) would be nice. I suspect someone on the list knows of such a
machine that they'd recommend.

P.S. Purely as a preemptive measure, please don't ping me for a list
of the manuals I have available just yet. I haven't gotten that far
into organizing them. Rest assured I'll be offering them to the ham
community later this year.

Flat bed scanner recommendations, anyone?

Thanks,
Robin Midgett K4IDC

Yes, Dave, power max input is 150 Watts. I am putting one up for sale

I have been told it is a good price for a good 4072. If you have a fax

[Repeater-Builder] very close frequencies seperation

2006-03-27 Thread Ian Wells

Hi guys .I am trying to receive 473.575mhz from a 25 watt repeater ,line of sight , 50kms away and and retransmitt it on 473.200 at 25 watt on another site. The transmitt antenna is a 6db vertical ,9 meters above ground and the rx antenna is a 6 db uhf beam 1-2 meter above ground ,aimed at the 473.575 site  Is it possible to notch out frequencies going into a receiver that are 275 or 375  khz off a uhf receive signal or is it going to be too close to filter out the TX .

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Dayton time line...

2006-03-27 Thread STeve Andre'
It never ceases to amaze me, how the "dayton is moving" rumor
mutates and spreads around.

The owner's of Hara have no intention of selling, nor the does
the Hamvention organization want to leave. I bumped into some
folks last Dayton (litterally) who were (are) hara folks. Hara is
doing at least OK; take a look at their wenb site: they have 8
events for April taking up 14 days. Thats not bad at all for such
a place.

The best way to make Dayton continue is to get new folks down
there. My wife and I have been averaging one person per year for
the last several years now, with two getting their licenses there.
We did some volunteer stuff last year, and I think it was obvious,
the commitment they had to improving the show. We plan on
doing that again this year.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Band pass cavity loop lengths

2006-03-27 Thread Harold Farrenkopf
The loop size of 8.5" down and then back up if used on VHF would
produce a very low insertion loss cavity with a very wide pass
response and if both of the loops were that dimension then the return
loss would be very good assuming the loops were adjusted to the same
coupling.

Such a large loop may have been needed for a special wide band
preselector that had multiple cavities using that size of loop. Or it
might have been Low Band loops in a VHF cavity by someone not knowing.

Loop size is dependant on the frequency and loaded Q desired in the
bandpass cavity and the type of coupling method.

In the standard Sinclair cavities, the pass and notch loops are
identical for the VHF band. The Q loops are one style for the 7"
diameter cans and the Reslok Cans are another.

Having special requirements for non-standard bandwidths or notch
depths would produce different loop sizes.

The old side mounted loops that were fixed mounted had many different
sizes depending on the frequency and insertion loss and hence there
were many different cable lengths to do the same thing at different
frequencies and loss settings.

[Repeater-Builder] Dayton Hamvention Reply back (as requested)

2006-03-27 Thread skipp025
Dayton Hamvention Reply back (as requested)

My friend Tom replied with the following information:

[paste]

Hi Skipp...
The pricing scheme for flea market spaces had been in place for
many, many years, and is intended to discourage the larger
vendors from hogging all the spaces, while keeping things less
expensive for the guy who just wants to sell a few things he's
had lying about in his shack. Interestingly enough, the average
vendor buys just over two spaces ( kinda like the average American
family has 2.4 kids!). Also, this means that the vendors who
buy a lot of spaces, and generally require a bit more attention
and effort from the committee, pick up their share of the costs.

The comment about the 2-way shops is pretty astute, and is also
true for the build-your-own computer parts places, who have a
tough time competing with a $400 pre-assembled PC.

There is also the e-bay factor, although that seems to work both
ways, as I have had several people tell me they buy things there
for the purpose of bringing them to Dayton to resell.

The right place to go for information is [EMAIL PROTECTED],
but if that isn't getting any response, send a message to chair@
hamvention.org (and a copy to [EMAIL PROTECTED], the asst. GC). That's the
big boss, and he doesn't like it when inquiries go unanswered. He
has the power to make heads roll.

Regards,
Tom

[end paste]

So there you have the reply...

cheers,
skipp

Has anyone received anything yet?

This will be my 17th year at Dayton. For at least the last 10 years
we've always had the same fleamarket spaces. Last year, we didn't get
our fleamarket tickets or entrance tickets. I called, faxed, emailed,
probably ten times, and it wasn't until the Monday before the event that
I got a call-back saying that they were having problems getting tickets
out in time, and that I'd have to pick them up at the fest on Thursday
when I got there.

This year, I didn't even receive the usual sign-up package which usually
came in December in previous years. I called, faxed, emailed, and never
heard back. Finally I gave up and downloaded the forms from their web
site, filled them out, and faxed them in. I still don't know whether or
not they received it or processed it.

Dayton is always a good time, even in the years with lousy weather, but
they need to make some improvements in the "customer service" side of
things...

We did that back in the sixties ... soap and water in the kitchen
sink - drying in the oven.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Weather station and repeater

2006-03-27 Thread Bob M.
Wow. Talk about "getting your feet wet".

The CAT200 (www.catauto.com) and other basic repeater
controllers can talk to the Peet Brothers weather
stations. I have three of the CAT200 controllers and
have had zero problems with them. You will need their
serial interface board, which has a microprocessor on
it designed to talk to the Peet weather stations. I've
only used the RS-232 portion of that interface board.
They make several different controllers and I don't
know how many others can talk to the weather station.

There are other companies who make controllers. The
more advanced ones have programming capabilities that
would let you talk to just about anything via a serial
port. I'm sure other people are doing this in similar
mountain-top locations. Give people some time to read
and respond to your post.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] AGT = IMTS ?

2006-03-27 Thread n . mckie

  Hi Eric,

Back in the old MTS (pre-IMTS) days ... (MTS = Mobile Telephone
Service / IMTS = Improved Mobile Telephone Service)

I was on mobile telephone in the late sixties / early seventies
on lo-band - the ZM channel.

My 'mobile telephone' consisted of a Motorola 80-D (30 watts
output) installed in the trunk of my car ... connected to
 the old mechanical Secode Decoder.

The Secode Decoder was anything but quiet in its operation. I
could easily count the mechanical steps as it decoded each number
dialed to it by the mobile operator. (Alternating 600 / 1500 Hz
tones) I think my number was ZM-76244 ... maybe not as Paul (then
K6CHR) was also on that channel and had a similar number.

A short carrier burst from my radio and the mobile operator
would come on the channel asking for the number I wanted to
 call.

The lo-band 80-D radio was (I think) 43+ Mc transmit and 35+ Mc
receive. I bought the used radio at the local junk store (Mann
Communications for those who remember Jim) for $50-60. The
mobile service was $7 per month.

BTW, for you who remember Jim Mann (Mann Communications) he was
WB6JAJ (or as we happily called him, Jack Ass Jim.)

For you guys who fondly remember those days, the mobile telephone
channels were as fun to listen to as you may wish:

I was listening one evening as I was driving across town ... some
guy called his wife about an extended meeting at the office ...
then shortly, called three separate lady friends setting up each
visit for 1 1/2 hours apart.

Those were the days . 35 some odd years ago.

BTW, the 80-D (complete model number: FMTR-80D) was all tube,
vibrator power supply for the receiver / dynamotor power supply
for the transmitter. Yes, I do have the manual for that radio
in case any of you ...
