You are correct, the PTT button on the large board keys the TX. It
will not allow any RX audio to pass, this is the normal.
The question is, is the recevier receving? Have you hooked a speaker
to the two pins on the upper right of the large board? Did you hear
anything there? The pot there is for the Spkr volume.

The 'PL Disable' switch does not disable the PL on the REPEAT, so if
you do not have the correct PL the TX will not come up, even with
the 'PL Disable' switch ON.

Jacques,

Did you change the frequency into the ham band?  If so, the VCO may need to
be changed to allow the new frequency to operate.  Also, you probably need
to re-tune the duplexer if it came with one.  Both of the R-100's I have
came with mobile-type duplexers attached to the cover.

What frequency was originally in it and what frequency did you program into
it?

2006-04-12 Thread Eric Lemmon
Don,

The Basic Service Manual and all Detailed Service Manuals are still in print
and available from Motorola Parts at 800-422-4210. The Basic manual applies
to all four bands of MSF5000 stations (VHF, UHF, 800, and 900), while the
Detailed (Depot) manuals are unique to each band. Each manual comes in a
nice ring binder with tabs. Here's the whole list:

Basic Instruction Manual 6881092E05, about $41
VHF Depot Manual 6881092E75, about $68
UHF Depot Manual 6881092E80, ditto
800 MHz Depot Manual 6881092E85, ditto
900 MHz Depot Manual 6881092E90, ditto

If you have the micor putting out proper power then you don't have the
problem.
The Micor, in stock multichannel base station configuration, grounds the
low side
of the appropriate channel element to select it.  Many mods tell you
to ground the
frequency one element, which has the transmit channel element running
full time,
which in a simplex base station blocks the receiver (RF-wise), or in a
repeater
results in a low-level signal full time.  Some people don't like
that, especially those
with high-altitude sites where the low level signal can travel a decent
distance.
It's really annoying when you are at the repeater site doing servicing
and your
HT never shuts up.
So a common solution was to key the element on and off with a switching

transistor added to the backplane (see the Joel Huntley WA1ZYX mod) or to

use the antenna relay transistor on the station card (Scott's
note).
Some folks say that letting the element run full time results in a more

stable signal.  I say that if you have a good quality crystal in a
good
channel element powered by a clean 9.6v regulator that you already
have a stable signal.
If not, then something isn't doing it's job!

I believe they were still available new from Motorola

10+ years old, whatever they have is all that's left,
and when that's gone, they aren't making any more.

I notiice considerable discussion re:the DB224 antenna recently. Guess I
was wrong, but I thought they had gone out of business. Can someone give me
info on who/how to contact the best source for purchasing one of their
antennas?

Thanks

2006-04-12 Thread Paul Finch
I was working at Bell Communications in Fort Worth, Texas when they were
announced. Bob bought one around 1980 (I think) and we used it in the
install shop, seems they were pretty tough and the install Monkeys did not
have the slugs to drop. I still prefer a 43, like I said before I think I
have 5 or is it 7, getting old and can't remember..

As Neil once said, "you can not measure the standing birds on an
antenna without a B1rd 43." B1rd is pronounced B one R D!

The B1rd is still one of the most important tools today.

I don't think Telewave was even around back then (40+ years ago).

  Me too ...

I started using a Bird 43 long before I ever heard of Telewave
 - about 42-43 years ago.

[Repeater-Builder] Maxon pm150

2006-04-12 Thread Ian Wells
Following on previous posting I did get a chance to test my site with a
spectrum Analyzer and on transmitt my two maxons are giving off a lot of
harmonics which I feel is causing desense on my repeaters .One repeater is
running a 6LD450S and the other is a 6mc450s
Is it better to try a 6 inch bandpass cavity inline between the TX pa and
the duplexers or change the duplexers to band pass/band reject

Thank You,

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Weird Kerchuking Problem

2006-04-12 Thread Bob M.
I had a similar problem on my 900 MHz repeater. The
site is about 1/4 mile from a much busier site that
has a lot of paging, cellphone, and other stuff on it.
All it takes is two systems to be off frequency by a
hundred Hz or so, and when they cause intermod, the
receiver sees that frequency difference as PL, and
tickles the squelch. The repeater was being keyed up
dozens of times per day.

My solution was to use DPL on the repeater input. The
repeater is now completely quiet unless it's being
used or sending out its beacon every 30 minutes.

Not much you can do if you need to maintain a PL tone.
Intermod will happen. The frequency tolerance for
commercial equipment is going to be a few hundred Hz,
so differences in the PL tone range are highly
possible.

Good luck with your new technical committee duties.

Decibel was purchased by Andrew, now under their "Base station Antenna"
business:

http://www.andrew.com/products/antennas/bsa/

Versus hacking up a new antenna to get it tuned, my personal suggestion to
look at the Telewave exposed dipoles.

http://www.telewave.com/pricelist/antdipole1.html

Very broadbanded - work incredibly well on our bands. I use them on 4
different ones of the NI4CE tall profile sites. On our www.ni4ce.org page
you'll see a photo of a 4 bay VHF (ANT150D6-9) and 8 bay UHF (ANT450D7-12)
Telewave pair 1035ft up a broadcast tower. These antennas replaced 5 year
old DB models that had weathered a few too many tropical events. So far the
groups' been very pleased with the results of the antennas.

As Neil once said, "you can not measure the standing birds on an
antenna without a B1rd 43." B1rd is pronounced B one R D!

The B1rd is still one of the most important tools today.

I don't think Telewave was even around back then (40+ years ago).
