Re: [Repeater-Builder] Frequency Listing Sites

2010-04-23 Thread Dennis Wade
Radio Reference is an excellent resource, and you can find all the below and
more there.

Generally the UHF frequencies (certainly in the Sacramento area) are for the
Capital Division which protects state property, as well as state officials.
Other areas in California that have significant state properties will
probably have a Capital Division presence (as in SF for example). These are
the successors to the old State Police folks that merged into CHP in the
mid-80's.

The extender frequencies (as others have said I think) are only really
useful when you're within a mile or two of where an officer is out of the
car.

You may also find a couple of frequencies in the 70 mhz range that are used
to interconnect remote receiver sites with their respective dispatch
centers. North Sacramento is an example.

But for traveling there is no getting around the low band VHF dispatch/car
channels. The extenders might be useful, but your looking at listening
primarily to the VHF-LO range.

 Have fun!

[Repeater-Builder] Cable prep and crimp on connectors

2009-12-02 Thread Dennis Wade
Good Afternoon,

I've been following the previous threads and doing a lot of
research on the issue of crimp on coax connectors vs. solder. Based
on that research and several very useful threads on this list I
purchased a Paladin Crimp All tool with a couple of dies for RG-8/213
and type and RG-58/59 type cables. I bought some connectors from the
same industrial jobber here locally to practice my installation
technique. The results haven't been too bad...they look fine, are
solidly on the cable, ohm out fine, etc (solder center pins). I used
a sharp utility knife for prepping the cable. (Yes, I did verify that
the hex dimensions of the dies match the connector manufacturer's
specifications.)

I really didn't like the knife approach..it worked, but was
pretty tedious for me. So, the question is...

For those who use something other than a utility knife, what
is the coax prep tool of choice? Do you do a 2-level tool or 3?

Is there such a think as one tool for both RG 8 and RG
58/59/RG-6 type cables? I'd rather not have one tool per cable size
if I can help it.

   Thanks for your input!

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Closed Repeaters

2009-07-26 Thread Dennis Zabawa
The point has been made that a closed repeater (actually any repeater) is
private property and others have no right to utilize it. I would agree to that
premise except for the fact that the repeater utilizes PUBLIC spectrum.

The analogy would be: I have a large tent that I like to set up on my property.
If I take that same tent and permanently set it up in a public park and, I
keep others from entering my tent, I am using PUBLIC property for my own,
exclusive use. Would that set well with most of you?

I have a closed repeater that has PUBLIC spectrum coordinated for it. That has
the effect of allocating that PUBLIC asset for my exclusive use.

Why should a repeater be different than the tent?

Not cheap, but not the several hundred dollars either as quoted by

I've had the same questions as I am also considering a crimp only

Tnx Eric - that may be good advice. I did find manuals ...not at $58,
but still plenty expensive ... and I'd still need a crystal ($25-30). I
want to replace a 6M beacon so RX not an issue ... but will need to mod
for CW. This mod (in my limited experience) usually means getting into
things and keying in front of the driver - also not very optimal. I
might just build something myself - not tough if crystal controlled at
50Mhz, CW and 10-15w output max.

The Maxar is a low-end, economy radio that may be difficult to convert to

performance to be disappointing- even after doing all of the capacitor
changes. I must assume that the low-band models may be equally problematic.
If you buy your crystals from a reputable house like ICM, they will come
with an appropriate compensation capacitor to provide rough temperature
compensation- but it still drifts far more than a good channel element
 would.

You really should have the service manual on-hand before trying to modify
the radio out of band. The good news is that manual 6881033E75 is still
available from Motorola Parts. The bad news is that it costs about $58. My
advice is to pass on the Maxar and find a low-band MaxTrac. I bought a
2-channel MaxTrac (D51MJA93A5AK) two years ago, and paid $35 for it- one of
the best deals I've ever made! Other than programming it to 6m and tweaking
the VCOs, it works perfectly without any modification. That may be the
exception to the rule, but it just happened to work for me.

Main Operating system is WinXP Pro. Small partition that's FAT16. I can
 move
files in and out of the FAT16 partition from WinXP. When I need to run the
ancient stuff, pop in the FreeDOS live CD, boot up, CD to the FAT16
partition (it doesn't even see the NTFS partition) and away I go. It's
worked out well for me, but of course, it won't work for everyone. My
experiments have been limited to old Motorola RSS.
Before this I went to huge lengths to try and get real DOS to boot off a
small partition, etc. Something always didn't work. Serial drivers, drive
geometries, etc. Emulators... same story. Once I hit this combination, it
did everything I needed it to, so I've been stable here since last winter.

[Repeater-Builder] Moto battery charger light question

2008-11-02 Thread Dennis Wade
On the rapid gang charger, NTN 4668A for the HT600, MT1000 and others,
what does it mean when one of the slots shows a steady yellow/red
light together (after the start sequence) when inserting a battery to
charge.

The same battery in all 5 other slots shows the expected
yellow/red/green sequence followed by the steady red for charging.

Thanks in advance for the info...I couldn't find a user manual on the web.

  Hello All,

I have come into a few Midland UHF power amplifiers. On the PA's, it's
labeled as a model number 71-5400B, 120 watts out, and freq range of
450-470. Does anyone know the drive requirements for this PA? I've
looked through the RB web site as well as Midlands web site and have
  found nothing.

When I Google the amp the only info that comes up is a few Ebay auctions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for the advice. However, I have had no success with
using XP (or finding a DOS startup option..are you sure you're not
confusing XP with WIn98SE?). Maybe you have a dual boot setup?

Remember I need to use Moto RSS for the MT-1000 and Spectra. The only
machine I have had luck with is a P1 processor at 166 mhz running
WIn98SE. I've tried faster laptops and desktops...P2s and P3's with
both XP and WIn98 with no luck at all. (Win98 is always started in
DOS mode, never a DOS window).

Thank you again for all the replies...I appreciate it.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Part 97 question reference to Repeater control

2007-11-08 Thread Dennis Zabawa
OK, here is where it really gets fuzzy for me:

§97.213 Telecommand of an amateur station.
...
(b) Provisions are incorporated to limit transmission by the station
to a period of no more than 3 minutes in the event of malfunction in
the control link.

Does that mean that the link must be active at all times? Otherwise,
what would provide an indication to the repeater that the 3 minute
time interval should start? The link going away? OR does it
magically divine that it is no longer under the control of a control
operator?

If the link truly has to be active to be in control then, a dialup
connection would not seem to fit the requirements nor would an RF link
that is not transmitting at all times. The only thing that seems to
fit the bill would be a pair of wires, telco or otherwise that
directly connect to the repeater at ALL times!

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Power-Pole connectors NOT for power

2007-03-25 Thread Dennis Zabawa
Reasons not to solder PowerPoles:

1) It is very hard to control the wicking of solder into a stranded
wire. Allowing this to happen can create a failure point in
applications where vibration is present. And there can be a
surprising amount of vibration in a rack mounted piece of electronic gear.

2)Heating up a metal object that is intended to function as a spring
loaded contact changes the metal and makes is softer. This is not
conducive to reliability.

3) A properly crimped powerpole more reliable than a soldered powrpole.

4) Aircraft connectors are not soldered. Be thankful of that the next
time you are in a airliner at 30,000'.

Dennis KG4RUL

This comes from my experience in aircraft wiring harness assembly. I
was trained and certified so I do know what I am talking about.

[Repeater-Builder] GLB Synthesizer - The next step?

2006-02-22 Thread Dennis Wade
I found this thread quite interesting...I didn't know the GLB existed
till now. It sounds like a fun thing to tinker with. Have to keep my
eyes open.

But I've had this concept in my brain for a while, and I wonder what
you all might think. Bear in mind its a concept.

Seems that the next logical step (albeit the need for one, except for
guys like me who have alot ot Motrac lying around, is debatable), is
to use a DDS chip controlled by a PIC to generate the necessary
signals to enable frequency agility for the MOTRAC in my case. Maybe
even the dual output DDS...to provide both xmit and rcvr injection?
The PIC could provide memories, offset, etc. Maybe even control PL
frequency and associate it with a memory channel.

Yeah, probably over thought...but might breathe new life into those
rigs, especially in a base application.

So...does anyone have a manual I can have a copy of for a GLB to get
an idea of the frequency scheme. It occurs to me that to get 5kc
increments on the output of the multiplier chain, the steps at 8 mc
for example need to be alot smaller...do I have that concept right?

 Comments?

[Repeater-Builder] Quintron Paging Transmitter - manuals needed

2006-02-12 Thread Dennis Wade
Hello everyone,

I've been given a compete Quintron paging transmitter
currently on 43 mhz. The 6 foot rack includes a synthesized exciter,
control, metering and (heavy) power supply. Although I find serial
numbers on all the individual modules and the entire rack, I can't
seem to find a model number for the whole system. Web searches
suggest, but not with certainty. that it is a QT-350. Others
suggestions are a QT-7080. (Anyone know how to determine for sure?).

This is the RF deck that uses a single 4-400 and I am told is
rated at about 300-350 watts CCS in class C.

I need whatever manuals (for the exciter, PLL and PS in
particular) can find for this unit to begin designing a conversion.
Any info is appreciated. Reasonable copy costs are gladly paid.

   Thanks!

  Dennis

[Repeater-Builder] Squeeling Problem Resolved!! (I hope)

2006-01-19 Thread Dennis Carpenter
Ok guys I think I resolved the squeeling problem. I Got to the site
this morning while guys were using the rptr and the problem was
existing. When tuning the PA awhile back I noticed if you went to far
one way it would oscillate (feedback, whatever) or go spurrious. Where
I thought was the proper setting was just on the edge of this. I
retuned the PA and all cleared up. Even cleaned up Rec'd audio just a
bit.
This has been happening more in the early mornings. May be the frost,
dampness on the antenna created a slight impedence mismatch. Using a
metal antenna, Hustler G6. If it comes Back I'll let you guys know.
Thanks to all fer you input. This group is the GREATEST!

[Repeater-Builder] Squeel'n Problem!!

2006-01-18 Thread Dennis Carpenter
I have a Mastr II VHF mobile conversion w/Link rlc1+ controller,
preamp at the duplexer and ts64 decoder board. All has worked well
fer a few years now. Recently there has been a steady tone (squeel)
around 1000hz heard on the repeater. It as all problems comes and
goes. It at first could be heard only when a carrier was being
rec'd. When the rec'd signal dropped so did the tone. Nothing heard
on tx hangtime.
This morning though it remained on after the rec'd signal dropped,
all the way until the R
rptr TX dropped. It would happen this morning about 50% of the time.
This was first time we've heard it in a few days.
Any ideas what to look fer first?? Thought the trouble was the
rec'vr but after this morning not to sure.

As always thanks in advance,

2006-01-18 Thread Dennis Carpenter
Kevin ; I have a spkr on the rptr and it was working fine couple days
back when I was at the site. There was no squeeling at the time either.
I'll get back up there and put another speaker on it. This was my first
thought but it checked out at the time. Could be a intermittent
connection somewhere in spkr connections.

Tnx,
Dennis ki5fw

[Repeater-Builder] GE Mastr PRO deskmate power supply question.

2005-04-20 Thread Dennis Adams

Greetings,

I have a GE Mastr Pro Deskmate with the 4EP38A10 Power Supply. The
question I have... are the barrier strips at the top the same pinouts
for the TX/RX strips as the 4EP38A12 power supply? I have the 4EP38A12
Schematic.

I am wanting to hookup a controller and wanted to make sure I have the
COS, audio, PTT, etc correct for wiring.

Better yet if someone has a schematic for this unit that would also
detail the barrier strip designations, please contatct me. I will pay
for a schematic of this power supply.

Thanks,

I will have to see what I can find on that resistor for the mic hi

TX Audio is a bit tricky, there is a diode switch in
the tx audio path that needs a resistor to + positive
voltage to turn it on (bias). The answer is just a
resistor from the 10 or 12 volt supply to the proper
mic-hi terminal connection... it's been more than 5 min

to tell you the exact resistor value connection I used.

If you don't make the mentioned resistor/bias connection,
the tx line in audio will sound distorted.

A small fan moving light air over the power supply

[Repeater-Builder] Re: intermod/interference??

2005-04-08 Thread Dennis Carpenter

Kevin:
As long as the 97/R is linked to 24/R and there is no activity on
the 70/R every thing is fine. Once someone transmits thru the 70/R
is when the problem occurs. The 97/R has to be recv'n a signal from
the 24/R and of course be transmitting for the problem to happen.
If there is traffic on the 70/R without any traffic on the 97/R or
rec'vn a signal from the 24/R thru the remote base there is no
problem.
The 97/has to be linked to the 24/R and recv'n a signal from it for
the intermod to occur. You can disconnect from the 24/R and all goes
away. Seems to me it is coming in thru the remote base recv'r.
Maybe some mix of the 146.970 TX'r and 146.700 TX'r with the remote
listening on 147.24 is the problem. I've looked at the intermod
calculator and there looks like there could be a problem. I'm just
not very familiar at how this all happens.

Hope this claifies some things,
Agn tnx to all,

Dennis ki5fw

I disagree, because he says it happens only when things are linked.

I would think it has something to do with the link transmitter
intermoding the repeater receiver, or the repeater transmitter
intermoding the link receiver. He doesn't elaborate enough on
when it
happens, like after the linked repeater drops, or just when, but I
don't
believe it's a problem with the repeaters.

Dennis, Your statement of When the link is up and someone uses
the
146.700/R it creates terrible interference and you can actually
understand what is being said on the 70/R. The 70/R will not be
heard
or cause a problem until the 97/R is accessed while linked to the
147.24/R. is too vague and seems incorrect. If the two
repeaters are
linked, you should be able to understand what is being said on
either
machine, so I'm wondering what you are actually experiencing?

At any rate, a notch cavity on the remote base tuned to the
repeater
transmit frequency, placed in the remote base line will help or
eliminate intermod of the remote base. A notch cavity tuned for
the
remote base transmitter frequency, placed in the repeater receiver
line
will help or eliminate intermod of the repeater receiver.

I don't have the time to run the numbers, so maybe you could run
them
 again Eric?

Eric;
Tnx fer reply. U R correct there is no circulator on either the
146.700/R or 146.970/R. I have a bandpass cavity. Which rptr does it
need to go on??? The 97/R has a Bp/Br wacom 641 duplexer. The 70/R
runs dual antennas w/o any filtering on the TX.
Jeff (w5ppb) owns the 147.240/R and is planning a freq change soon.
This rptr is one we like to link to during WX conditions allowing us
on the east side of MS to communicate with Jackson WX Service abt 90

Thanks Neil.

I will get those model numbers later tonight. I am not sure what
frequency exactly but there are strips in there but I am sure they
are probably VHF 2 meters but don't quote me on that.

As you can tell I am not too familiar with this GE model I am more
familiar with the mastr II's but have a vast knowledge of electronics

Thanks for your help thus far and I will get those model numbers ASAP!

I don't know. I have a TKR -820 manual but don't know how similar they are

Thanks for the offer

Any idea if the TKR-820 manual would help you
out with the 720? I have the TKR-820 manual and
could snap a few pictures of the setup section.
