Luckily the W4BOC club repeaters captured Jane Barbe before she passed.
She was also a guest at a club meeting. She introduced herself from the
back of the room on a wireless mic as I remember to a standing ovation.
I'll have to see if CDs are available with her voice to put together IDs.

For those who don't know her and those who remember her is a good sample.

No but I will with the next one I buy. I'm keeping the first one I
built separate because it is a model that has the keyboard CW support
AND the 5v regulator. I don't belive that firmware is available
anymore. I have and will use that feature. The connection kit is a
great interface board. The only other product that is built as
versatile (for another purpose) is the Signalink series of sound card
interfaces. You can tie those interfaces into almost any radio out
there by chopping off the end of an old CAT5 cable and wiring the bare
ends with your radio connector.

Be sure to enter the coordinates in degrees-minutes-secondsN,

between the numbers. You must have a comma separating the latitude

 34 35 21.84N, 120 30 15.37W

[Repeater-Builder] Want to add VHF cross band link for my portable UHF repeater

2007-05-30 Thread Ronny Julian
I have a portable UHF repeater being put together and I'd like to
include either a simplex or duplex VHF system to link in/out to existing
VHF repeaters or VHF simplex users. The UHF side would be the local
master repeater with the duplexer. I have that already. I have not
picked a controller yet. What would work well on this and also draw as
little current at 12vdc as possible? DTMF control would be fine.

The bag phones actually have a lot of useful parts in

readily made for 902MHz operation. Before I got

I notice most of the boats also have installed AMPS 3 watt phones on the

I wonder if they have a community repeater or trunking system on Dutch
Harbor and surrounding areas.

have been unable to figure out what the heck they're using.

The audio in this latest season sounds very digital... in previous
seasons there were shots of those 220 MHz ACSSB SEA radios on the
overheads of the ships above the Captain's heads, but haven't seen
 those this year.

The radios have keypads on the backlit mics, and a couple of shots
seem to show some sort of trunking or simulated trunking or
channelization that includes more than just the standard marine FM
channels, of course... but there's also been times when at least one
boat overheard a conversation that was ship to ship that the other
skipper wasn't expecting them to hear.

Whatever they're using now seems to have ship to ship and all
call type communications between the vessels in the particular co-op
that's fishing and filming the show, and then of course there's the
Coast Guard on another analog radio.

Anyone have any idea what/how these open ocean systems they're using
work. They're 200-300 miles off-shore, so I am assuming satellites
 may be involved.

Kinda neat, but it's driving me nuts trying to figure out what they
are. The camera guys regularly take shots of the GPS when voices
come out of the overhead with the voice-over guy saying, over the
radio, a call is heard... ... blah blah blah, the usual goofs for a
TV show... or just taking a picture of something that looks high-
tech, and the GPS looks like fancy and lit up... so they don't show
the radio that's actually what the skipper is talking on.

What do all these big fishing vessels use these days, anyway?
 Fascinating.

Record/sample a low volume level wav/sound file of the Peanuts
 Cartoon Teacher Wha'...wha sound.

After say... 30 to 60 seconds of repeater same user keydown the macro
would trigger the wav file to play the sound behind the lock to talk
persons audio. Playback would stop and reset upon clearing the
 repeater input.

Call it a time out timer warning message, which I believe is built
into the software of some controllers..?

Then you'd have to write a macro to disable it for some x-value amount
of time after it runs... to avoid abuse.

Think about it... you need a laugh anyway... it's Monday.

2006-05-27 Thread Ronny Julian
1190 total radios with Part 95 listing. Neat listing. I asked for this
info 4 times on the GMRS list before and no one could or would mention
this. Thanks!

Kevin King wrote:

The technical requirements for a transmitter useable for GMRS service ARE:

1. FCC part 95 type acceptance.
2. Transmitter frequency stability of .00025%

To check if the equipment you want to use meets the technical specifications
for use as a GMRS repeater transmitter. Use the FCC ID number on the
transmitter equipment and search at this link:

The information on how to setup the Rick and the radios can be found on the
repeater builder web site, possibly the batwings site, And most assuredly
someone on this list that has set one up will respond with helpful
information. I have not used a Rick but have built and serviced may GMRS
repeaters. I wanted to make the original poster had the proper information
regarding the equipment he wanted to use.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Portable Repeaters

2006-05-08 Thread Ronny Julian
Pick a clear pair and go for it. The FCC is the only authority than has
a word to say in the end. If you do interfere with someone just work it
out like the ladies and gentlemen we are supposed to be.

Paul Yonge wrote:

I've not been too successful in convincing the various Upstate New
York Amateur Radio Associations that simplex repeaters are the answer
for providing portable repeaters in critical incident response
situations. They are relying on the fixed repeaters to provide
adequate coverage but there are areas where it would be advantageous
to bring the repeater to the incident instead of trying to reach
fixed repeaters with hand-held units from some isolated locations.
There are, of course, coordination problems with portable duplex
repeaters and there is no apparent interest in agreeing on a wide-
split pair of odd frequencies to avoid the conventional-frequency pairs.

What experience has there been with the use of portable cross-band
repeaters to enable hand-held units using a 440 MHz simplex channel
to reach the portable repeater that will relay the message through to
a two-meter fixed repeater?

I still see no sign of a manual or building instructions. I hope they

Looked at your controller. Looks pretty good. However, did not see
any CW ID or audio processing, a must for a ham repeater. Adding
these is a simple thing. CW ID is mostly software. With small PIC
memory maybe not enough room.

Frankly, I didn't see any transmitter control at all. I would call it a
DTMF controller, not a repeater controller.

Looks like a nice little board though. Much better then the ones I've
seen in the past. And cheaper too!

[Repeater-Builder] WTT: BayTech RPC-4 serial remote power manager

2006-04-10 Thread Ronny Julian
Check here for details.

http://datacenterresources.com/details_power.asp?prodID=RPC4A-20NC

This would save someone a trip to the repeater site. I wonder if a
connected packet TNC and radio could be used to talk to it?

Trades considered are small footprint TNCs (KPC3 or PicoPacket size) or
small repeater controller with voice output.

This has a slightly bend rack mount tab but will still mount fine. I'll
include rack mount 33.6 modem if wanted.

Write off list please.

PSAs are free, but most stations run them at 2 AM, if they run them at
all. The ARRL has PSA's available for you to try to place in your local
media. It's worth a shot, even at 2 AM. www.arrl.org/pio.

The ARRL has a new campaign in the works that's still being developed, so I
can't say much about it yet. When it's released, it will take your help to
get it spread around in your area.

A good basic antenna, but low gain. I had a 220 Isopole on a building-top

essentially the guts of a bare-bones cellular phone in a metal box with
all
of the audio and control lines brought out to a connector. Such devices
are similar in concept to the data radios that are used in SCADA
systems,
and which incorporate a single-channel circuit board normally used in a
portable radio.

ENG journalists use a similar device to send taped interview audio back
to
the studio when it's impractical to elevate the link antenna from a
remote
truck. Distributors of broadcasting equipment carry several versions of
this link radio.

Finally, the vendors of automatic vehicle location systems use
off-the-shelf cellular link radios to periodically send and receive
location and assignment data. Although most of these radios carry
digital
data, the ones I have seen are also available in models that handle
two-way
voice.

[Repeater-Builder] Digi radios

2005-07-30 Thread Ronny Julian

I have 2 VHF GE custom MVP desk/mobile
radios. Whats the most I should pay for a set of 144.390 crystals to build
a digi/IGATE for APRS? Anyone have a couple of sets already made up they
would like to sell? The radios work fine now. Would adding a heat
sink/fan make them more stable or does it really make a difference?

Thanks!

 Hi Guys,

If you ever want crystals again, think about going off-shore, our crystal
company, Rakon, located in Auckland, New Zealand produces some of the best
crystals around. And they are not that expensive at all. Got a pair a
couple
of months ago, and cost $29 each (about US$18). They do ship worldwide.
They can be found at rakon.co.nz

Just an added comment, I have used USPS to ship nearly 90% of items I
purchase from the States. In all cases, I have received the parcels in
good
condition, and quick. I recently ordered a TS-480S, was mailed on a US
Wednesday (NZ Thursday), and was at my door on the Monday, 4-5 days
depending on how one looks at it.
I have used DHL, FedEx and one other company, and the hassles I had to get
the parcel, and the cost. NZ mail, which USPS sends it to, lets NZ customs
decide, all the others automatically put the extra customs tax on
regardless, even if there is an exception. Part of their policy. (Got a
 little off)

Regards, and thanks for reading my 5 cents worth. (2 cents is no longer
used
in NZ, and soon to be no 5 cents either.)

 Kevin, ZL1KFM.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: GE Phoenix Radios as Links

I found the connectors for the back of this radio with the pins installed.
What's the best way to crimp them? Is there a tool for this and where can I
get one?

A good friend programmed mine. 144.390 and 145.030 for packet/APRS. I need
to back off the power a bit but it works great! He disabled the TOT on
mine. Has not died yet.

 Some additional thoughts...

On second thought, I don't think it would be a good idea to disable the
timer, rather set it for 6 or 7 minutes to protect the radio. I don't know
of a hardware timer, but there may well be one; I didn't see it mentioned
in
the service manual, but I could have missed it. The service manual says
the
 timer defaults to one minute.

By the way, when you say you didn't program the CCT, did you leave the
field
blank, or did you put No in it?

I use one for packet radio, and all the signals I need are on the rear
connectors. Do you need a pinout?

If you don't program it, I believe it defaults to three minutes

I just checked my documentation and it says that Yes, No, or a single
digit time from 1 to 7 minutes may be entered. If Yes is entered, it
results in a Carrier Control Time of three minutes. I haven't tried it,
but
entering No may (should?) disable the timer; the documentation doesn't
 specifically mention it.

You need to get a license, $75 for 5 years. Also download part 95, regs

old CB rules.

Base stations are restricted to 20 ft above structure and 25 watts ERP, but
repeater can go as high as they like and run 50 watts out of the tx, not
ERP.

A repeater will require a duplexed receiver/transmitte, antenna and
normally a duplexer. I don't like doing much with a repeater unless it is
atleast 100 ft above ground and this is low, but can do something.

As to cost...how much you got, hi. From do it yourself $500-$1000. Want
all new ready to program and plug in and install $2500-$3000 not including
tower or building, radio equip only. Can spend more if you like.

Hi

taken from my post on another reflector

Apparantly the FCC in its vast wisdom, has determined that GMRS via
VOIP is ok as long as the internet medium is not PSTN. This allows
DSL, cable, satelite, T1 and most everything else except dialup to be
used. I have not verified this personally, but in another reflector,
the initiator of this client based issue claims to have received a
response from the FCC specifically addressing the question.

GMRS users/repeater owners, you think you have illegal
useage/interferrence now...just wait a spell.

Put up a cross band repeater using very low power to
the transmitter. If your receiver it on 2 meters you
could use a low power 440 transmitter, wven with a
beam to your house. Maybe even use some nonstandard
repeater frequencies, just be sure the transmitter is
in the repeater band.

You could use a tape recorder with a vox on it, or
there are some computer sound card programs that will
do that if you want to leave a computer at the site.

[Repeater-Builder] What have I got here? Micor mobile

2005-04-16 Thread Ronny Julian

VHF Hi band elements are in 156 range. Model # T53RTA1404BA

60W drawer only. I've never seen one like this though. It has a option
installed that looks to be a mobile extender. It fits onto the end of
the drawer and makes the entire thing just about 5 inches longer
overal. This has a small duplexer and two other channel elements. What
have I got here and what are the repeater modification possibilities?
(222?)

Thanks!

Re: [Repeater-Builder] What have I got here? Micor mobile

2005-04-16 Thread Ronny Julian

It's VHF but who knows Maybe it's one of those for high VHF.

I'm going to pursue making a 222 repeater out of it. After I tackle the
UHF conversion.

I'll take some pics of it on Sunday and upload them to the files section.

N9WYS wrote:

I also recall low band Micor's being equipped with an extended receive
option - worked so the county sheriff (on 39 MHz) could receive the State
Police (on 42 MHz)... That added an extra section to the drawer, just like
you described.

Sorry if the model number given wasn't for a low band radio - I'm not up to
speed on immediate decoding of mother M's model numbers off the top of my
head...

Not really any better (or easier) to convert to a Ham repeater.

 Dave,
After reading your hurtful remark on repeater builders
I told my boss. Guess what you are on the no service list.
You owe Cook Towers for a back invoice you have not paid
and they have called you on. It is over 16 days not paid. Bet you
 won't tell
 that to folks
on repeater builder. Your post I find very hurtful after I went
out of my way to help you! Even late passed 17:00 on one night
to help. I only get paid till 17:00 eastern as Cook closes at 17:00
eastern. As for your wrong pin that came from CAT not me. Once
again your on tape telling me that from CAT. Also it was not three
 weeks as
you stated. Your repeater is just that old.
I also have you saying that the Kenwood TKR-850 is working very
 well and how
much you like the auto. Once again we do not support any thing we
 do not
sell and hooking someone else's controller to a repeater is not of
 our concern
it is yours and yours alone.
We just helped you at no charge because you needed help.
Well if the Kenwood TKR-850 has any problems for the next 2 years
 call us
and we will 100% support it. Any thing you did not buy from us I
 wish you well

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Powering the Repeater With Marine Batteries

2005-01-22 Thread Ronny Julian

I think you are talking about Optima batteries. Yea I've got one in my
Minivan :) It's the main battery and has been working great for quite
awile. 3 year free replacement. I have the Red top battery but all the
young bucks say the yellow lasts longer. I didn't see much difference.
http://www.optimabatteries.com/publish/optima/americas0/en/config/home.html

I'm adding a second one thats going to live in the rear part of the van.
You can mount these upside down in the passenger seat if you so desire. No
venting issues (they say) Real nice thing if you have a GM (side post)
battery, It gives you that extra set of top posts to wire radios to in a
separate set of circuits. I'm running a 4 guage to the rear of the van and
using a expansion block to split it off to several fused circuits for other
radios. Also fused at the battery.

And also note that marine grade batteries wont last very long in standby
duty,a little better than a car battery but not much. Its worth the
extra money to buy gel cell type batteries designed for that type of
duty. They are also totally sealed which may be required if used in your
home or at a big tower site. Ever see a hydrogen explosion rip apart a
battery? Also, pay attention to the recommended float voltages of the
manufacturer, also a good idea to give them an equalizing charge monthly.
I have run battery backup here for 27 years! Fuse everything!

One of the best ways to manage the charging of your batteries is to use

Ibex http://www.ibexmfg.com carries two 3 mode chargers that are very
well suited for the job. If you look at their web page under the 12
volt chargers, the last one listed also has load shedding capability.
That means that not only does it charge the batteries, but you can power
the receiver, controller and exciter (but not the PA) through the load
shedding switch and when the battery voltage drops, it will shut
everything down; saving your batteries from total depletion.

Using a charger like this you will still need to isolate the output of
the AC power supply and the batteries. I personally prefer to do this
with hard relay contacts so that you don't have voltage drop through a
diode to contend with. Which ever way you choose, spend a little extra
to charge the batteries correctly and they will last a very long time
and be there when you need them.

noise, or would the batteries filter that. What would be a good
source to charge these batteries? The power supply that will be

One of the best ways to manage the charging of your batteries is to use
a multi-mode charger designed to properly charge and maintain them.

Last night my power supply took a dump! Good thing for backups.
Anyways, what I am wanting to do is put 3 marine batteries together
to run the power for the repeater with a charger to charge the
batteries. If I use a 12 Volt Car charger, do I risk the chance of
noise, or would the batteries filter that. What would be a good
source to charge these batteries? The power supply that will be
taking the place of the worthless Pyramid supply will be an Astron
52 Amp Rack Mount Supply. I have heard in the past that batteries
have been charged with these power supplies, but not sure if this if
true or not. Any ideas? Thanks.

Al, I have not seen 6X9s for awhile either. Heres some in wall types
that may fill the bill.

[Repeater-Builder] Non standard CTCSS tones in Amateur service

2004-12-21 Thread Ronny Julian

I know a repeater that required a tone not implemented in the standard
38 would not make a it too popular but is it legal? I was wondering if
a pair of these on a rcv link would discorage interference.

If you have the list handy could you
place a link to it or check to see if the Kenwood TK-349 is on
it?

Thanks!

  Hello All,
The question over the week end was about could you use a GE master two on
GMRS under part-95. The answer is not at this time.
I called the FCC and at this time NO GE, MA/COM or Ericson may be used on
GMRS under Part 95 GMRS. None have FCC certification at this time. They may or
may have had it in the past but none can be used at this time. I could not
find any model on my list that I had that was a few months old. So I called
this morning to get an answer. So if you are running any of the above on GMRS
you can't under part 95 GMRS. Sad but true.

Then how is it I see them and lots of
other GE, Midland etc stuff in use as GMRS stuff. I guess there is no self
policing of these frequencies like there is in Amateur. I bet if there was
that the 5 and 8 mile radios on sale at Wal-Mart (junk compared to a good
Kenwood 349E BTW) would be protested by legally licensed GMRS
operators. I saw how Wal-Mart and the manufactures get around this though
by including a mice type version of the GMRS application inside folded up in the
part you toss.

Has there ever been a "Pirate" GMRS
repeater shut down? GMRS is new to me and I'm wondering if it's just a
freeband whose only requirement is $80 to the FCC and then that is optional if
no one complains.

I notice there are only 2 GMRS repeaters
here in my area. No one seems to use them at
all.

  If you're
talking about the TK349's appearing on Ebay and Overstock.com, No they are not
type accepted (certified) for use in the US. Just look at the label and you
will see something like "certified for the UK". These radios can only be used

Yes! They have shut down a few un license
GMRS repeaters in the Phila.. PA area. They even got a contractor for no
license. They even got a group in the Camden NJ area for no license and it was
a non profit group running a fund-raiser with all HT's. So yes they are
working on it. They busted me for running a Master two on GMRS. It had been on
for a while and on a part 17 tower inspection on a matter not connected to me
they saw the unit while check all units in the tower. As for using outer
things I had two master two's and one Micor and I have replaced them all with
3 Kenwood TKR-850 repeaters. You can run any thing you would like BUT it can
be costly. The outer thing is they found a few 100 watt units (50 watts Max on
GMRS repeaters) and some mobiles used as repeaters and it is not a good thing.
They are nice about it. But! I found in my case it was better and cheaper to
replace the units then keep them on a pay a fine.
Good luck and enjoy GMRS I sure do.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] 1-day scanner sale - RS PRO-83 1/2 Price

200 channels, no trunking, $60... Not a value with all the Pro 94s and
BC-235s/245s on the market for the same or better price.

It's amazing how RS corporate seems to think much of their stuff is a
deal. EX: I got a Verbatim 256MB USB drive for $9.95.at Microcenter
this morning. RS had a Door Buster 128MB for double the price.

As a Radioshack dealer, I will agree that this is one of the nicest little

going on sale numerous times throughout the year. I can't tell you when,
but it will. Check with some of your dealer stores, not company owned, and
they may be willing to honor the $60.00 price if they have any left.

Subject: 1-day scanner sale - RS PRO-83 1/2 Price

Had to go to Radio Shack today for work, which turned out good for
me. Today (Nov. 26) ONLY the PRO-83 is $59.99, 1/2 off. This is a non-
trunking scanner. It covers the normal VHF and UHF scanner
frequencies (i.e. no mil air) and 800/900 MHz. It has ten banks of
memories, with 20 memories per bank.

What sets this scanner apart is the feature called Signal Stalker
Search. This functions in a manner similar to the Optoelectronics
Scout's ability to reaction tune a receiver by detecting nearby
transmissions. I use a Scout - Smart Line - Bearcat combination, and
the PRO-83 is comparable, better is some ways and worse in others
(one improvement is that everything is in one box).

If you had a Scout / Smartline / Bearcat you could be
within 50 feet of someone with a handheld and when
they squeezed the PTT you'd instantly have the TX
freq and PL. This can be useful in many situations.
The RS scanner - at $60 - is handy for just this feature.
In addition you get a 10m/low band / 6m / aircraft /
2m / highband / UHF / 800 / 900 mhz scanner that
you can load up with frequencies from your PC.

Get them while they are in stock !!!
