[Repeater-Builder] Programming Cable for TKR-850

2004-02-06 Thread jfrohoff
Can anyone tell me about the programming cable for the Kenwood TKR-
850. I just purchased the repeater but did not want to pay what
seemed like alot of $$ for a programming cable. I want to be able to
setup the radio when it arrives, so I am going to build up my own
programming cable.

There is only one small picture in a copy of a manual I have found on
the net that shows the data in/out connections to the radio mic jack.
Does any know if these are true RS232 or TTL signals required? Can I
just use a MAX232 circuit to convert from my DB9 Serial to the RJ
connector on the radio?

Thanks in advance for any info - Jim K7RNR

[Repeater-Builder] Why need a commercial community tone board ?

2004-02-06 Thread jfrohoff
>> Also add a commercial community tone board

Can anyone explain the need for a community tone board and DCS? I
understand that some radios allow us to use the digital coded
squelch, but why the community tone board? Best I can tell from
researching them on the net (and on repeater-buider site) is that
they are used when a repeater owner wants to track usage by different
groups of people, each assigned a different CTCSS code or DCS code
(?), sometimes used for billing purposes.

I am building up a first-time UHF reapeater/remote for local
emergency use but am now a bit confused as to whether I am best to
buy a simple CTCSS decoder or a whole "community panel"?

Equipment obtained thus far is a Kenwood UHF TKR-850 repeater radio
with Decible Products Duplexer. Thanks in advance for any comments.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Programming Cable for TKR-850

2004-02-07 Thread jfrohoff
I did some more digging and looking at the schematic. I found that
the TKR-850 has an on-board RS232 transceiver (IC620) that only works
with the back-panel serial connections. The front-panel mic connector
serial connections are TTL and must be connected through a level
converter. I will look first for a TK-880 cable and build my own
using a MAX233 transceiver if I can't find one. Here's a link to an
example of builiding a MAX233-based interface that I'll try :
http://www.mods.dk/mods.php3?radio=kenwood&model=th-
f7&selectid=2508#2508

Thanks for the help.

[Repeater-Builder] TKR-850 - Where to get CTCSS enable signal?

2004-04-14 Thread jfrohoff
In the course of connecting my new TKR-850 to my Arcom RC210
controller I found out that the repeater's "Squelch Control" ouput is
not actually a CTCSS squelch signal, it is a COS signal only. In
other words, the "SC" pin goes from 5v to 0v whenever ANY signal is
on the receiver channel, whether or not it has the right CTCSS with
it. The CTCSS is enabled for the channel in the programming (173.8),
but it only cuts off the audio. The CTCSS enable is not reflected on
the repeater's SC pin. When I change to the wrong CTCSS code on my
handheld, the receiver speaker is quiet, and no audio gets to the
controller, but the "busy" light on the front lights and the SC pin
goes to 0v.

I cannot see any other output pin for CTCSS enable ... so my option
appears to be either to use an external CTCSS decoder or to find a
signal in the receiver that does reflect the true CTCSS enable state.

Anyone deal with this issue on a TKR-850?

Thanks! Jim K7RNR

I missed it the first couple of passes through, but I dug back into
the manual again and found a table that showed I can assign something
called "TOR" to an auxillary output pin. TOR can be high or low
enabled when a valid COS and CTCSS are available. The TKR-850 is now
working great with the Arcom RC210. Fun stuff. Thanks for all the
suggestions. Jim K7RNR
