[Repeater-Builder] Re: electricity theft

2010-08-22 Thread whensley11
I've sat back and observed this thread as I have over 32 years in the electric
utility industry. All electric utilities are concerned about electricity theft
from a revenue AND safety standpoint. Who is and isn't prosecuted is another
matter. It depends upon the local statutes. Some utilities and their respective
legal jurisdictions work more at this than others who may not see it as
important as other things in front of them. One of the most successful units I
saw worked with the local legal system, and had changes to the ordinances (to
be more specific, to deal with the severity of theft, and to deal with repeat
offenders). Then, to top it off, members of the 'current diversion group' were
deputized! Needless to say, there were a lot of prosecutions with a high
success rate.

OK... let's get back to repeaters!

Re: [Repeater-Builder] AC buzz on VHF

2010-04-26 Thread whensley11

Distribution voltages begin at 2,400 and go to 34,500 volts.  Transmission
voltages begin at ... depends upon the utility.  Could be 46,000, 69,000 or
115,000.

Anyway... it's not the voltage.  It's simply there is a device issue somewhere
on a power line.

Could be a bad connector.  A bad transformer.  A bad lightning arrester.  A bad
switch.  A bad insulator.

Bottom line, something is breaking down and creating this buzz.  Begin by
driving around the area and narrowing the area down.  Then with a small yagi
try to pin point things down to a few poles, or THE pole.  Some electric
companies have staff that can assist with RFI, and some do not.  Don't assume
they do.

If you have questions, drop me a line.

The Titans were all CB rigs. I suggest doing a Google search for the info.

Our group is about 2 rows away as well.  Thankfully the wind blew another
direction, and we did not smell the grill!  Speaking of the grill, on Friday...
did any of you notice the smoke-filled main arena??

Some how... with all the cooking in the area, the main arena looked like a
smoker's paradise!

[Repeater-Builder] sleeping arrangements - Dayton Hamvention

2009-05-17 Thread whensley11

I don't know what kind of input there is to the Hamvention committee(s), but I
for one would like to see a stronger voice for hams regarding the local hotels.

Picking up on your thread, Don, I did have a nice hotel, but the initial
reservation had my back up against the wall.  Everything worked out, and my
stay was good, but those kind of headaches should be noted.

The Hamvention should take a stronger stance on the part of those traveling
from out-of-town.  Treat us fairly, or lose our business.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] sleeping arrangements - Dayton Hamvention

2009-05-17 Thread whensley11

My experience with Dayton had to do with reservations.

Several of us get together at Dayton.  As nobody in the group had made any
reservations, I stepped forward back in February and reserved 4 rooms.  With
this particular chain I had always been able to cancel reservations before 6 PM
the same day.

I forgot one detail.  I did not look at the cancellation policy for this trip.
30 days!!

Here I was the day before the Hamvention holding 4 rooms (as the others found
rooms closer - 5 mi. vs. 10 mi.)!  Neither the chain NOR the hotel would help
me.  Online 2 hams took 2 of the rooms, and I had the third room.  Arriving at
the hotel, the staff told me they were overbooked, so cancelling the 4th room
cost me nothing!

Needless to say, I was on pins-and-needles.  It turns out that some of the
staff were jerks, and some were very accommodating!  Thank goodness for the
latter!

SO... did anybody else have a 30 day cancellation clause?

Next time, I will pay attention to the details!

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Taxes On Antennas Feedlines? What Next?

2009-04-30 Thread whensley11
This should not be surprising. It has been done for years with utilities. Go
out and look at a power pole. For an investor-owned utility, everything on that
pole is taxed - pole, insulators, hardware, crossarms, etc. If it's producing
revenue it's being taxed. They have simply confused cell phone installations
with others, but then a business system is doing the same thing - generating
revenue (directly or indirectly).

Amateur installations, however, should be exempt.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater Kerchunk

2009-03-16 Thread whensley11

My thoughts would be... let it be.  Do NOT let anybody know it may bother you.
If they know it bothers you, they will keep doing it.

As a long time ham I do kerchunk repeaters, especially my local one.  Why?

To check the status and cycle of the I.D.

If the repeater has been inactive for a while, when it first transmits it sends
its I.D.  Since I don't want to be 'washed out' by the I.D., I kerchunk the
repeater.  Once the I.D. has finished, or the I.D. has not been sent, I will
then put out my call to see if anybody's on the air.

On the road, traveling... I will kerchunk a repeater to see if I can reach it.

There's also the other side of the coin to this.  You think kerchunking is
bothersome?  How bothersome is it to be mobile, you bring up a repeater, and
you try to use it.  You try several times putting your call out there.  Several
miles later, several attempts later, you discover your audio wasn't getting
through.  The repeater's ears weren't as good as its mouth.

Give me kerchunking any day over that.

[Repeater-Builder] Info needed - 220 duplexers

2004-01-05 Thread whensley11
Would anybody out there have a set of Wacom's WP-625 duplexers?
I am especially looking for the model with the tuning stubs.

No - not to buy! I need some info - the length of the tuning stub(s)!

It seems a previous owner of my duplexers trimmed the stub! OUCH!

To make matters worse, when TXRX took over Wacom, they only have information
concerning the latest Wacom products. That is, 625's WITHOUT a tuning stub!
